Trust In Magic #1

Within Her Magic

Rate this book
Merissa

My time in the shadows has come to an end. It’s time to stand up and fight.

After the brutal murder of her parents and being forced to leave her beloved sister behind, Merissa has been single-minded in her mission—learn to control her magic and become a more powerful witch in order to return to the wolves’ territory and free her sister.

Kayden

My wolf grows restless with his need to protect and claim her.

Four years ago, on the day of his brother’s wedding, Kayden met his fated mate and vowed to keep her safe and out of his father’s clutches. Now she is no longer the young, inexperienced witch he let go and tried to protect. She is a warrior, a force to be reckoned with, and he intends to claim her.

Within Her Magic is a dark paranormal fantasy and not for the pearl clutchers amongst you. Not suitable for under 18’s. Triggers include violence (lots of it), dubious and non consent, and death, which may require a whole box of tissues. You can also expect some steamy scenes.

I (along with most readers) know N. Dune for her steamy contemporary books, Beyond the Tide. This was completely different than her trilogy, and I LOVED every single moment of it.

The story was utterly compelling, a dark PNR set in a world that is so like our own and yet so different. I don't want to spoil too much about the plot, because it was just so SO good. Merissa is a witch who is trying to control her powers so she can seek revenge on the wolves. But it just so happens that nothing goes to plan. Merissa was an incredible fMC, and her growth throughout the book was absolutely perfect.

And can we talk about the spice?! SO HOT. Kayden and Merissa together were everything I needed from a hot paranormal couple, and Dune did not leave me wanting.

There are a couple scenes considered Dub/Non Con, so if that isn't your thing, please check the trigger warnings!

A whirlwind, PNR fun-ride!
I want this man deep down in my soul, and I need to have all of him.
There wasn't a single dull moment in this one, guys. The adventure started almost on the very first page and Merissa and Kayden were such a fun couple.

They don't get off to the best start. Caught up in their parents' machinations, neither trusts the other and enmity brews between them almost immediately.
"I can't tell you that I accept us being mates, and I can't pretend that I don't want to hate you for who you are, but . . ."
And I loved how Kayden figured out very early on that they were fated mates and does everything in his power to keep Merissa safe. 😍😍
"You are spectacular, my love."
And Merissa was a fabulous bad-ass, who was more than Kayden's equal. Such a turn on for me.😂😂
This mate bond is something I need to explore and the more time I spend in his arms, the more I know I don't want to leave him.
There were actually some pretty creepy supernatural parts in this one that need a TW:

An all-round great read! If you're into . . .
✔ dystopian PNR
✔ fated mates
✔ magic
✔ shifters
✔ witches
✔ fast-paced adventure
✔ plenty of heat 🔥🔥
. . . you've found your next read.

As a 'beginner' reader of PNR books, I'm always worried I won't be able to get into them.
This wasn't the case with N. Dunes' book. It CONSUMED me.
The way she wrote the book sucked me right into the story like I was a character in the book.
Well-written, brilliant descriptions, and I loved the connection of Kayden and Merissa.
The spice was off the charts too. I just loved the book as a whole. Simply Divine.
If you like Dark PNR romance, then this is for you.

Take ALLLLLLLLL the stars! Take them!
Within Her Magic in a nutshell:
😍Hero: Protective, strategic, leader-type, werewolf shifter who is loyal to his brother and committed to his mate even from afar.
🐺Hero/ the wolf: Yes, they are like two seperate personalities. I loved it. They often don't agree. I love that too. He's growly. Possessive. Protective. Ready to claim his mate.
💋Heroine: A badarse witch who is still vulnerable at times while being able to summon all kinds of kick-arse magic. Devoted to her sister. Loyal to her friends.
🤛The plot: It gives me quest vibes. There is travel through a dystopian bushy landscape. Epic battles. Relentless rescue missions. Meeting fun and interesting characters on the road. Heartache. Fallen friends. Unlikely companions.
This was so fricking Good!

This is the first book I've read by this author and WOW does it deliver.

PNR at its best. A lot of steam, some tears and a story line that had me hooked at the start and on the edge of my seat at the end.

Ris is one kick arse witch determined to free her sister and as the story unfolds her relationship with Kayden the hot Alpha, is well steamy to say the least.

Add in a pack of supernaturals, evil witches and a tyrant shifter king and you've got one hell of a story.

A five star read for me.

What a great book! I loved Merissa and Kayden. Okay I loved Kayden more. 😏 He is a wonderful mate and wolf. I love every part of his personality. I love how the mate bond is expressed and his feelings for Merissa and the way he cares for her.💕💕💕

My only thing is that I found the book very predictable. I knew who were the bad guys right away and what would probably happen.

Other than that, it's a great fighter's story, mixed with a perfect amount of steamy scenes 🔥🌶️ and love ❤️❤️. I also loved the ending.

I would definitely recommend this book 🥰

In three short words: I need more!
I want more. I crave more. I refuse to let go of these two characters, especially of Merissa!

I loved this book. I would have read it in one sitting if tiredness hadn't beat me down and forced me to take a short break to sleep a bit. Although that sleep was full of dreams of Merissa and Kayden and I loved every second of them. 😂

So, Within Her Magic is a dark, paranormal fantasy romance and usually not my genre, but I made an excuse because I already loved N Dune's Beyond The Tide Series, and let me tell you, I was not disappointed!
I have a thing for witches anyway, especially elementary witches. There's something so powerful about them, and in all honesty, I wish I was one, too. Only without the fights and dangers. 🤣

Anyhow... Let's talk plot.
The story plays in the future, around fifty years after the human kind managed to nearly destroy planet earth for good (shout-out to N Dune for that little critical lesson on us having to treat our planet better!). Humans have almost entirely disappeared and made room for supernaturals, such as witches, wolf shifters, vampires and fae, who are now fighting over their territories and who's the most powerful species.

The book starts off with a wedding. Merissa's family descends from mighty elementary witches, and to maximise their power, her big sister was promised to marry the son of wolf shifter tyrann Eion. Of course, Merissa isn't happy to see her sister in the hands of such a family, especially when she hates their entire species. Unfortunately, she finds herself to be the fated mate of one of them. Kayden, Eion's second son, half wolf shifter, half witch. Knowing of his father's evil plans concerning the witch family, he risks his own life to get Merissa away from the wedding before the slaughter begins...

Four years later, Kayden is out, always on the trace of his fated mate, protecting her from afar while she discovers and trains her true powers as a bad-ass warrior witch. She's on a mission to safe her sister from the clutches of Kayden's father and brother, he's on a mission to keep her safe while he's coming up with a plan to stop his father's tyranny and free their territory. Unfortunately, his father isn't the only threat out there...

This book is gripping as hell. I only let it out of my hand to meet up with a friend, and 98% of our conversation was me telling her about the book. 😂 Kayden and Merissa are characters who sneak into your heart and refuse to ever leave again. The book is full of battle scenes that made me wish it'll get turned into a movie one day. Honestly, I'd love to live their story again on the big screen...
I'm telling you, there's something about that fated mates charm... Ooph, that heat when those two collide, I was wishing Merissa would have cast a cold water spell over me at times. 🥵
And then, the entire midpoint... When N Dune says the book isn't for the pearl clutchers, take it seriously. Things were done to our beloved characters that not only had my heart wrenching with agony, it might also be a bit too much for those sensitive to sexual abusive. So I'm gonna put the warning right here. It contains a few scenes of that and they're not easy to read.

It can be said, this book made me feel many things. Love, heat, threat, and sadness. The epilogue honestly made me cry and I'm still not quite sure if I cried because of what happened or because the book was over. But I know one thing, I'll keep these characters with me for a while, and I want more!!!

I absolutely love this book. I would have read it in one sitting if my partner didn’t feel the need to spend some quality time with me on our vacation 🤣. I still managed to read it in two days tho 😂.

So, Within Her Magic is a dark supernatural fantasy romance novel and since I love this genre this book was absolutely to my taste.

So……let's talk about the plot.
The story takes place in the future, some fifty years after humanity has almost destroyed the Earth forever (well done N Dune for including an important lesson about how we need to treat our planet better!). Humanity has almost completely disappeared and been replaced by supernatural beings such as witches, lycanthropes, vampires and fae who compete for the territory and fight about who is the most powerful species.

The book begins with a wedding. Melissa's family is descended from powerful elementary witches, and to maximize their power, her sister was promised to marry the son of the werewolf tyrant Eion. Of course, Melissa wasn't happy to see her sister in the hands of such a family, especially when she hates their entire species. Unfortunately, she later finds out that she is the fated mate of one of them. Kayden, Eion’s second son, is half werewolf, half witch. When he learns of his father's evil plans against the witch family, he risks his life to take Melissa away from the wedding before the massacre begins...

Four years later, Kayden is always on the move to keep an eye on his partner and protect her from afar as she discovers and trains her true powers as a badass warrior witch. She has made it her mission to safe her sister from the clutches of Kayden’s father and brother, while he is on a mission to protect her while hatching a plan to stop his father's tyranny and liberate their territory. Unfortunately, his father isn't the only threat...

This book is gripping. Kayden and Merissa are characters that sneak into your heart and never want to leave. The book is full of fight scenes that make me want to make a film of it one day. Honestly, I'd love to see her story told again on the big screen...
I tell you, there's something alluring about fated mates...oh, the heat when those two collide, I wish Melissa could cast a cold water spell on me sometimes.

And then the whole middle part... when the author says that this book isn't for pearl clutchers, take it seriously. What was done to our beloved characters not only hurts my heart, but may also be a little too much for those sensitive to sexual abuse. So I'm going to add a warning here. It contains some scenes that are not easy to read.

This book let me feel a colorful array of emotions, including love, heat, threat and sadness. Honestly, the ending made me cry, and I'm still not sure if I cried because of what happened or because the book was over. But I know one thing: I'm going to keep these characters for a while and I want more!

In three words: I need more!
I want more. I long for more. I refuse to give up on these two characters, especially Melissa!

Man, this book is wild (in a good way) and this is my first time reading N. Dune's book. It's a pretty fun read! The TW page cracked me up, but seriously check TW if you have any :)

This story has a dystopian feel and it has shifters, witches, vampires, alpha mates, fae, and more. Plus, the SPICE IN THIS MAAM OMG. KAYDEN AND MERISSA. I LOVE IT. This book makes me laugh too!

Too Hot GIFs | Tenor

The main heroine Merissa is totally a badass who doesn't give AF but will do anything to save her sister. She is one feisty witch!

I Will Fuck You Up GIFs | Tenor

Kayden. Omg Kayden. He is an Alpha that is a cinnamon roll that can actually kill you. I love him. He's so delicious. He's dangerous. He is very protective of his mate, but, but even if things happen... You need to find out he is honest and ahhh ahh he is so precious.

It gave me Amelia Hutchin's vibes-ish and it's a stand-alone with a HEA. Honestly, if you read ZA they kind of have Tory and Darius vibes, which I super love. So if you want all of these, this is definitely the book for you.

I've read books by N Dune before and I had high expectations to begin with. Like the sea crashing over a wall during a storm, N Dune blew me away with this magical PNR, dark romance. There are bits of it that might be triggers to some, but if you read the words carefully, you understand why they're happening and you want justice to be served.

Rissa and Kayden are just unbelievably hot both together and apart. How they work together, their goals... I couldn't put it down and when I did, I hardly slept because my mind was focusing on the one aspect I'd stopped at. I couldn't see how on earth Kayden had fallen for it... and when it was revealed how, I was just as outraged as he was!

I'm pleased to learn that this might be the start of a series: if the other stories are as accomplished as this, we're in for a treat! It's truly magical and I promise you, you'll get lost in this world, come back out and wish to go straight back in. Because it's just. That. Damn. Good.

I have devoured AALLL of Dune's books. Devoured. You can't go wrong, so when I found out about Within Her Magic of course I had to check it out.
Rissa grows into badass heroine from a rare bloodline of witches and Kayden is her sexy, alpha yet caring mate... YES FATED MATES. And apparently rare fated mates at that. Their love for one another is still new despite Kayden knowing for a while how he should feel about her. It's not rushed or phony or overdone insta-love. The delicious push-pull of their relationship is just right.
This novel has an intriguing story line and is beautifully descriptive without going overboard. Plenty of action, SPICE (frigging HOT), and emotion that I am so here for!! I'm honestly still not over it and you'll know what I mean when you read it!
Dune's writing always has a way of drawing me in and flowing so well that I get lost in her work for hours. WHM is no different.

This is a story about magic, power, and fated mates. But it is also a story about survival, strength, loyalty, courage and love!!

Merissa’s sister is betrothed to a wolf. On her sisters wedding day, the wolfs brother Kayden senses danger and gets Merissa out of their castle.

Four years later, Merissa and her teacher, and best friend, Rogue are trying to find Lileth who is the sister of her wolf savior Kayden. Merissa thinks her sister is being held against her will by her husband so she intends to trade the wolfs sister for her own.

A witch containing dark magic begins to take control of the wolf pack but she is not their only enemy. Something darker lurks and is ready to pounce.

Merissa is a force!! She is a natural leader and a caring friend. I also loved the secondary characters in this book. We need more books from this world!! NOW!!

it’s magic!

*Some spoilers*

I’m new to the Supernatural Romance world as I started mid 2021 with this genre. N. Dune’s book sits at the top of my favorites. Her characters are intricate. The story pulls you in nearly from page 1. Kayden is the son of a terrible and sick ruler. Merissa is promised to an even sicker ruler. On the day of her sister’s wedding, her world turns into chaos. She has to escape or die, leaving her poor sister behind. The journey these characters go on is crazy. My anxiety went through the roof. The story takes unexpected turns and you come to care about every single character, not just the H and h.

Kaydan is brave, caring, honorable.

Merissa is one badass witch!

Read this book. You won’t be disappointed.

HEA. Steamy scenes. Dark Romance. Supernatural Romance.

Wow! OK. I really actually loved this book.

TW: abuse, death, non con, dubious con non con.

I'm really enjoying the Fated mates trope right now and this is what I was looking for.

The character building was great and I really enjoyed Merissa, Kayden and the whole Crew!

I loved the cruel aspects brought into the story and the roles of Eion, her father, Clara and Caleb lots of unexpected twists, depravity, and crazy torturous non con scenarios.

The spice and details were 🌶 🌶 🌶 🌶 🔥
And it wasn't light and boring.

There was alot of smirking I caught myself doing and I think this is the first book I've read that brought a tear to my eyes. This book totally sucked me into it. I didn't want to put it down.

I really hope N dune has more paranormal books like this or even a book 2 to within her magic. One of my Favs so far.

I was never a big reader and recently fell back in love with books when I found my preferred genre. This hit every itch I needed scratched so to speak lol

Deff recommend if you are looking for a darker Fated mates witch/shifter plus other supernatural beings book.

This PNR is definitely different to what i am used to reading in PNR, and i say this in the most positive way possible. Although, i am still bitter about papa bear Rouge, i can honestly say i throughly enjoyed this book. The setting was my favorite thing about it, futuristic dystopian world that somehow felt middle age-y. The cast of characters was entertaining, relatable and definitely incited a lot of emotion from me. Merissa, a young powerful witch seeking vengance for her family's slaughter and what she thinks is her sisters captivity and Kayden, an alpha wolf honorable and loyal to those he love. Aside from being a PNR i woul say this book could also fall in the adventuring category. As i write this i realize i'm not doing the book justice but what i do hope i am getting across is that you won't regret picking up this book.

TW: dubious consent/non-con, murder, misogyny, dark magic

N Dune has written an incredible book and created an amazing world that I loved being a part of.
The story will grip you from the start and not let go.
Kayden and Merissa’s journey is long and filled with heartache along the way.
I fell in love with Kayden, he’s the hero every story needs. His love for Merissa shows at every point.
Rissa is a true warrior, a bad*ss FMC who fights like h*ll for what she wants.
The two of them have so much chemistry and this in evident in how steamy things become between them.
You’ll end up wanting to know everything about the characters in this book too and it’ll have you wanting more from this world.

It has been a hot minute since I have read a paranormal/magic story and N. Dune has just reminded me why I used to read them so much with the release of Within Her Magic. From the first couple of pages I was hooked. The story takes off from the very beginning and I loved that. Merissa and Kayden are a dynamic team when together and just as fierce of fighters when they are apart. All of the side characters in this book are just as loveable as Rissa and Kayden. I love how N. Dune wrote such an independent and strong minded heroine and a Hero that admires his love for exactly how she is.

This is the first N. Dune book I have read and I cannot wait to go back and read her other books. I know this book was suppose to be a standalone but I will not lie...I would love to see some stories of all the side characters we were introduced to in this story.

If you’re into dark paranormal romance, definitely give this one a go. I really enjoyed the world-building and the vibe of a futuristic Britain which still felt mediaeval at the same time. There’s definitely a lot of scope to develop this world and tell more stories in it beyond Merissa and Kayden’s. Merissa is strong and battle-hardened, Kayden is loyal and honourable, but it was Rogue who really won my heart. There’s plenty of spice, although for large chunks of the novel the plot drives the story forward. Make sure you check the trigger warnings before you delve into it, though.

I don’t read a lot of PNR books as I can find them difficult to get into. I had no issues falling into this world. I loved it. Has a dystopian world with supernatural beings that were easy to fall for. Definitely possesses several darker components that can be triggering for some but an overall sweet read. In my opinion at least. I definitely plan on keeping an eye out to see if any more books are written from this world.

This book was FANTASTIC.

A Witch and a shifter. An impending war. A bartered sister. A mad King.

I loved Rissa and Kayden, and the side characters peaked my interest enough that I need more in this world - do you hear me NATS?

This was my first PNR and, whew, it was spicy!! I’ve read a fair amount of YA fantasy, so it was nice to read a more adult POV. Dune created a wonderful world of witches, shifters, and (my favorite) vampires, to get immersed in. Lovely read!!

This book was the first book I read by this author. Her writing style was new to me, and I really enjoyed getting out of my reading comfort zone with it. Reading new styles of writing is something I am striving to do this year.
-
This book follows Merissa, a young witch, as she journeys to rescue her sister from a wolf pack she was married into. It also follows Kayden, a shifter wolf/ partial witch, who ever since finding his fated mate has been working to try and keep her safe. This dark paranormal fantasy book is a great read for those of you who can handle reading the type of story N. Dune conveys through her triggers.

I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend you read it if the tigger warnings are not triggering to you.

Good Story

******My review has spoilers!******
This is my first time reading anything by N Dune, and the story has a nice plot. I like the characters, with the exception of Caleb. His interaction in the plot was so small, that I didn't get a chance to "hate" him. Clara may be my favorite character in this story. She is so twisted that a huge chunk of the story would not be possible without her. Eion is a true villain, but Clara takes the cake. Without her interference, Melody wouldn't be pregnant. The cringe-worthy non-consensual scenes would not have happened. I don't know which was the worse- the Eion/Melody scene or either Clara/Kayd scenes. Dispersing the remaining black magic after Clara's death wouldn't have been an issue at the end of the book. And she had a great death scene! She is the villain I LOVE to hate!
There were some grammatical errors that the editor missed, and they tripped me for a moment, but I don't feel that they affect the story itself.
I will still recommend this book to others, because I really did like the story.

Not your typical girl saves the world story

Yes, the girl saves the world, but she knows just how powerful she is. Or does she?

This fated mates, enemies to lovers, battle against evil story moves along with the world building flowing through the plot and moving the story forward.

I'm not usually a fan of post apocalyptic books, but this turns a future England into a high fantasy world, blending modern conveniences with magic.

I look forward to watching Merissa grow in her power through the rest of the trilogy.

Fated Mates and a battle for all!

Why oh why did I not read this book before now?? This is such a fabulous fantasy read, my first from N. Dune and I can’t recommend it enough!

There’s (you guessed it:) magic, witches, wolves, vampires and fae, fated mates, a badass FMC, her protective shifter, power hungry baddies, a little heartache, intense passion and spice!!

When life changing events cause Marissa to run, she only has one goal: get her sister back! Kayden recognises her for who she truly is and is determined to protect her. So follows a story of intense desire, over throwing tyrants and a determination to do what’s right.

This is a really good story with great supporting characters and a fun bit of banter! If you enjoy a fantasy with romance and whole heap of action, then please give this a read!!

I've really enjoyed this from Dune, and it was great to see this author try a new genre. It was a very well put together plot and I'm impressed by their first foray into paranormal romance.

The combination of supernatural creatures, and the post apocalyptic style of setting worked really well together. I'm left wanting to know more about the different elements, especially the vampires and fae - please say there's some spin offs coming aha!

Characterisation was strong, and the dual POV worked very well. I think Kayden was a more likeable character for me, but I also loved Lils and Ana - maybe I'm just not much of a witch lover!

Great read, and one I'd recommend to those who enjoy the genre.

This was boring and hard to keep reading at times. I didn’t enjoy the authors writing style. It was very cut and dry.

Merissa doesn’t know anything about anything. She’s literally just believed everything her parents have told her. Her whole life has been committed to saving a sister who didn’t want to be saved.

Kayden was a softy. Liked him. He had sense and he actually really loved Merissa. I didn’t feel the connection between them as mates. This book wasn’t lovey dovey at all.

The action and the witchcraft was ok. The plot was ok. This was just ok.
