4.5 stars!

The final book in The Queen & The Assassin trilogy, this is the conclusion to Tamar and Runo’s steamy forbidden romance, and it’s an exciting, intense and passionate read that completes their story perfectly.

Note - This book is not a standalone, so make sure you check out the earlier books before diving into this one.

It’s been six months since, under orders from his Empress, Runo snuck his way into the Kingdom of Redwood to assassinate Queen Tamar. It only took one encounter with the Iron Queen for his plans to change, and we have since watched them fall in lust (hot!), then in love, while Runo found a home in Redwood, and has become respected and well-liked, even though most members of the aristocracy still look down their noses at him.

But now, they are faced with their biggest hurdle yet – the Empress has demanded Runo’s return, where he will face a slow, tortuous death. And if he is not handed over within a month, it is the Kingdom of Redwood that will pay the price. Our two lovers are faced with an unimaginable situation, the Iron Queen having to choose between the wellbeing of her people, or the man she loves.

“What would you do to save me, Tamar?”
“Anything.”

Complicating the situation further, Tamar’s own advisors are plotting to marry her off to a ‘suitable’ man, not knowing about her relationship with Runo, which they have kept a secret for Runo’s protection, and to allow Tamar to uphold her reputation as the cold and heartless bitch she pretends to be.

It’s a tense situation, with pressure coming from all sides, and it will take all of their wit, intelligence and bravery to find a way out. And in the middle of it all, Runo and Tamar are standing strong and fighting for their happy ending.

“Be stubborn for me, be heartless, be every bit the Iron Queen you want to be, and I’ll still love you death.”

It’s exciting and intriguing, and though I had an idea where the story would go, there were still lots of twists and turns along the way, and I was so excited to see it all play out. Runo’s sarcasm and smartassery is fantastically entertaining as he continues to endear himself to the people, and his commitment to and passion for Tamar are ridiculously hot and beautifully swoony.

“You’re all mine and you will be as long as I live, and I want you to know it.”

And even with such a huge hero by her side, Tamar absolutely shines as the strong queen, but more importantly, as a woman in love who refuses to give up on her man. She’s been through so much, and watching her truly start to embrace who she is and what she wants, was gorgeous to see.

It’s a bit of an epic finish as their plotting and planning comes to a head, and I was reading with a thumping heart as it all unfolded. This book made me laugh so many times, and I think I even cheered out loud at one point. I loved watching them stand so bravely and fight for their HEA, and finished this book satisfied, with a huge grin on my face.

I would love to see more of these two characters, and hope that they’ll show up in future books set within the Five Kingdoms. I absolutely love this world that Marshall has created, and cannot wait for more.

4.5 stars!

***4.5/5 Stars***

With betrayal, friendship, jealousy, threats, and love, Gold was a fabulous conclusion to The Queen & the Assassin Series!   Watching those we love redeem themselves, and others get the happily ever after they deserve was so much fun!  This forbidden romance will make you feel everything, and leave you smiling long after you read that last page!
‘I owe you more than my survival, do you realise that? I owe you my truth and my history and every shred of my soul that could still be salvaged– so be stubborn for me, be heartless, be every bit the Iron Queen you want to be, and I’ll still love you to death. Understood?’

With characters you couldn’t help but love, this story was so entertaining.  Runo showed us time and again how wicked smart he was!  I loved how cocky he could be, and his smart mouth!  And I found myself clapping my hands with how bold and fierce Tamar was.  Yet Runo was to be given back to the Empress.  And Tamar had the weight of the world on her shoulders dealing with political plays and the other kingdoms.  So thank goodness for their steamy moments together.  It felt like they could finally breathe when it was just them.  Those scenes were everything.
‘You’re mine.’ Words he’d never even dared to think, and now they fell from his lips like the most self- evident of truths.

One thing I really loved about this final book was how friendships played such a large part.  While Tamar and Runo had each other, my heart was so happy that they found friendships with others around them.  I loved watching how those friends had their back, or helped them conquer their goals.  It was the best!  And the ending we were given was so fabulous.  It was not only a beautiful happily ever after, but we also got to see where Jaghar and Viviette were in their happily ever after too.  I can’t wait to read whatever Lisette Marshall writes next!

More threats from the Empress of Taavi. The Empress again pressures Tamar and Runo, this time with reductions in trade, harming citizens and nobility of the Redwoods kingdom, in an attempt to get Tamar to return Runo to the empire, to an almost certain death. Shrewd political maneuvering by the two of them resolves the problem with the Empress, as well as machinations by 2 members of the nobility to force Tamar into an unwanted marriage. As always, author writes intrigue combined with murder to write an exciting story.

A good ending.

I really did like the ending of this one. It was exciting and oddly satisfying considering I wasn’t sure how it was going to end. The series as a whole is just simply ok. Not great, but not horrible either. The writing is very strong, I just wasn’t particularly attached to any of the characters or the plot itself. Not something I would recommend, but I still enjoyed reading.

Thank you so much to the author Lisette Marshall for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

It's such a pleasure to comeback to this world and this characters.

This is the last book to The Queen and the Assassin trilogy, and all I can say is that this is such wonderful finale to the series.

I love the characters, they're to easy to cherish and spending time with.
It was a very pleasent time.

I think it's one of the first books that I spend so much time having fun and laughing. Never thought it would be so funny.

The plot was very intriguing, because I couldn't see how they were get over those challenges.

There were many steamy moments that were just fantastic. But there were also some parts that were really hard to read (e.g.: physical and mental abuse).

I love how much Tamar and Runo's relationship changed since the first book. I would love to see more of them in future books.

I feel like there's a lot stories that could be told from the other kingdoms and of course, the Empire.

The ending was absolutely beautiful, wholesome and heartwarming.

The Queen and The Assassin are once again at an impasse. Solving puzzles, acknowledging truths and tying up loose ends.

I didn't want this book to end. I tried savouring every page and now I can't believe it's over. The series is complete.

Gold is by far the best book in the series. It all comes togheter perfectly.

The characters have grown so much. They wear their emotions on their sleeves and I'm so happy for this. All those secrets and masks wearing off. Trusting each other.

Spice, smut, vivid sex scenes-call it what you will-I love it! The romance is not really the main plot but still important.

I miss them already but I'm sure we'll get glimpses of their lives in other triologies unfolding in The Five Kingdoms.

This series was just brilliant. Runo keeps being a show stealer and I was here for all of his antics!

There is a bit in this book where Tamar tells Runo how much she loves him and it made me realise that despite reading so much romance, I don’t remember a time where an FMC is so open about their love for the MC. It was refreshing. Their love, the plot, the side characters- it’s all refreshing.

I’m going to read Velvet now and learn a bit more about our favourite allies.

Runo is book husband material

I could not love this trilogy more. The banter, Runo’s humor and love is so satisfying and funny! You fear for them but at the same time you know all will be well because these two are an incredible team

Oh, wow, I did NOT expect to like this--no, LOVE this--as much as I did! I even teared up at one scene near the end of this, y'all, and I hardly ever tear up at books! I seriously LOVED this so much! Hands-down this is the best book of the series, which kept getting better and better, btw. The banter, the teasing, the interactions with pretty much every character in the book were spot-on, super-fun, or tense, or simply interesting!
Like, even the minor ones. I REALLY wanted (want?) Kaarina to stay at Redwood and discover what Runo liked so much about it! I think that would be so fascinating, although I'm guessing she returned home, since she wasn't mentioned at the wedding at the end and Runo was getting his 'I smell death' vibes around her, but maybe Lisette Marshall will surprise us with more of her (or her story!) later.
I also absolutely LOVED how everyone was trying to save Runo at this one part (look at me trying not to be spoilery haha); it was so freaking hilarious :-D And Terenti - I was impressed how he's pretty steady and sturdy as a character, and a pretty staunch ally (not that he isn't also flawed, but his decision at the end before he walked out really warmed my heart because it was what I was expecting of him, and he didn't disappoint). Amiran was never really a favorite of mine (haha I've always been expecting him to betray Tamar :-D), but in the denouement, I so totally wanted to cheer when he showed up, and his every action / word in that scene was perfect. And I mostly kinda sorta trust him now? lol
And when Tamar (somewhere in the middle of the book) finally decided to do what I'd been wanting her to do THE WHOLE BOOK, I like did a hop, skip, and a jump around the flat (alright, so I do this normally just because I get hyper - manic? - but when Viviette wrote Tamar that letter and Tamar is like LIGHTBULB [or 'candle' since they don't have electricity?], I was like YES (fist-pump). Whoo hoo!)
As you can tell, I can't recommend this entire series enough, really! Read it! It's escapist literature at its best - with emotion, a faint touch of darkness, a lot of tension, steaminess, banter (so much banter! And witty & fun, too!), fantastic characters that are so, so easy to love, and a truly wholesome (well, erm *cough* if you take out the lover activities on the throne haahahahaha) happy-end that left me grinning like crazy. So much recommended, y'all! Peace out!

What a fitting conclusion to the series! I love the dynamics between Tamar and Runo. Not the ideal way to meet the love of your life, heck, who would have thought that a trained assassin would completely fall under Tamar's spell and she in turn and not only totally botch the attempt, but become her fierce protector. The conversations are natural and real, their banter, at times, really funny and at times very intense. There were sex scenes, and yes, they were hot and steamy, written in a way that showed their intensity for one another, all consuming. When faced with an ultimatum by the Empress, it brings out both the worst and the best in Runo, whilst Tamar desperately seeks a solution, any solution. One might think this book, and indeed series, is about the relationship between Tamar and Runo, which it is, but it's primarily a story of political manoeuvring and court intrigue. The jocking for power, the scheming, manipulation and trying to avoid all out war with the Empire. I loved how stoic Tamar is when she is holding court, the perfect facade of the Iron Queen, and how how perfectly she hides her vulnerability. So terrific to see how much she has grown throughout the series, how comfortable she becomes in her own skin with all that she has faced. I was hoping for a HEA and the ending DID delight me! Loved this series, I do hope we've not seen the last of Runo and Tamar

I'm glad to finally finish this trilogy! I feel like it probably could have all been in one longer book, and cut out a lot of the excess. Once again, the story was drawn out and the climax of the story was rushed. In Gold, Tamar and Runo are fixated on the demands of the Empress, which is simply to return Runo to her. Obviously, that's not going to happen. So, they are rushing to find a solution. I saw the solution much earlier than they did, but it felt so overly simplistic and not really realistic either. Once they finally saw the solution, the entire novel focused only on satisfying that solution to the people of Redwood, and the Empress was barely brought up ever again. We never hear about that entire plot line again. It was really just brushed aside to satisfy the romance plot. I was glad that a HEA was finally found, and that all other storyline found their resolve, but I wished we would have found some kind of resolve with the matter of the Empress. What was her reaction to their solution? And then, once again, the graphic details of their sex life was a bit more than necessary. But, that's my preference, and this was marketed for that, so I went in knowing and won't detract any stars for that. Overall, it made a decent conclusion to the trilogy.

Gold
The Queen & the Assassin #3
Fantasy
Lisette Marshall
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the final book in this series and it was a really good conclusion. Things were tied up nicely and certain characters finally got what they deserved.

I like how throughout this series there are spicy scenes but they are not the sole focus and they don't overtake the actual plot.

The chemistry between Runo and Tamar is just as good in this one, they clearly care for each other and Runo is incredibly supportive.

The plot was interesting and I enjoyed the interactions with Viviette and Jaghar, they're personalities have made me curious about their own story. Pridon's character really annoyed me but that's because of how well he was written 😂.

The scheming continues and I felt bad for Tamar. She was abused for years by her husband and then had to control her kingdom with an iron fist. Now she finally has a chance to be happy and people in her own court are plotting behind her back, yet again.

I would like to explore the other Kingdoms, especially Maiva/The Empress because we're told how ruthless she is but I'd like some actual interactions with her.

Overall this series has been great. I love Lisette Marshalls's writing style and I'd definitely read more of her books.

Half a year ago Runo was sent to assassinate the Iron Queen Tamar, but once they met they he knew he couldn't hurt her. After finding a home in the Redwood Kingdom, Runo is content to stay by Tamar's side, even in secret. But Runo's empress has called him back, and if he doesn't go or isn't handed over, Redwood will face the penalty. Tamar is now torn over whether to put her people in harm' way or hand over the man she loves.

Lisette Marshall has been consistent in giving us fantastic stories that keep you on the edge of your seat. Tamar and Runo have a secret love that was kept this way for their protection, and now it's being used against them. The author wove us an incredible tale full of love, lust (and lots of it!) and an emotional story that will keep you guessing at what will happen next.

I loved this series and getting to see the couple progress and come together. They have been one of my favorite couples since the Princess and the Spy (an absolute must read series).

Runo got annoying in the previous book, in this one he's so much worse. He just struts around the whole time talking to everyone as if he's in charge, it's no wonder people want him dead. The way he bosses around Tamar is difficult to read as well, he's very pushy every time he wants to sleep with her, especially the scene in the music room, that one made me uncomfortable.
Tamar acts even more like an empty-headed teenager in this one too, she has panic attacks every 5 seconds when she thinks he's going to leave her. How did she even manage to survive on the throne all this time, especially in an abusive marriage. No idea where the 'Iron Queen" has gone, but the Tamar is this one is not it.

Her potentially going to war or ruining the economy over one arrogant, annoying man I can't understand

When this book arrived in my inbox I dropped everything else I was doing so I could read the conclusion to Runo and Tamar's story. It did not disappoint. It was a very enjoyable story.

This is the third and final book of this excellent series - The Queen & The Assassin.

Tamar didn't expect the Empire to take its revenge only on Redwood by insisting that Runo return to Raulinna before the month is over or they would apply sanctions on Redwood.

The Empress's personal enemies die; slowly and painfully. She has demanded that Runo is returned to her and promises that she will not harm him. Runo knows that is not true and he has no intention of returning to be tortured and killed by her. He has seen what she does to people who go against her wishes. After all, she has already tried to kill him.

Tamar and Runo come up with a plan to thwart the Empress.

This is a steamy fantasy romantic trilogy taking place in the world of the Five Kingdoms. It is a story of forbidden love.

I enjoyed this whole series and I loved the ending.

I recommend this book, but advise people to read Iron and Silver (the first two books) beforehand.

Such a great ending to this series!

Once again the Empress is trying to separate Tamar and Runo, this time by trying to send someone to fetch him with threats to Tamar and her rule. Not only that, but some, such as her brother in law, are trying to select someone for her to marry. However, Tamar is determined not only to protect Runo, but to keep him at her side.

I just adore Tamar and Runo. Such a cute couple, and their romance is just *chef's kiss*. I really love how their romance played out in this book, and I'm so proud of Tamar and how she stood up for herself, and defends Runo in this book. And Runo, well, he's Runo and I love and adore this man and he's just perfect for Tamar. The perfect balance to Tamar and her life.

I highly recommend this series, especially if you love steamy fantasy romances! Thank you Lisette for sending a free digital copy of the book to read.

Such a strong finish to this wonderful series. Like I mean it was so good. The world building of the whole series was great and the finish was just great. It was wonderful to finally see her being herself again, warmed my heart.
Okay so, I'm not going to say more not to spoil the book to much but since the trilogy is completed and you like to binge read as much as I do go ahead and grab your copies and enjoy this smoldering adventure. Just to be clear, there was spice but I wouldn't say too much it was just adequate to the plot in general.

I have received the eArc of this book and I'm leaving the review voluntarily. Peace out homies

Tamar is called the Iron Queen! But is a persona that she created to control her subjects.

Runo has led a life as an assassin created because of lies and deceit perpetuated by the country that "saved" him as a child.

Tamar and Runo are both injured souls that find each other by a twist of fate.

I love these two characters! I love their story of discovery and passion. It has intrigue and mystery,

If you like a book that isn't always smooth path for the characters and one that draws you in, then this is a book for you. All the books in the Five Kingdom are great books. Just as with Velvet & Jaghar's story, I don't want their story to end!

This is my honest review!

Gold is the third book in The Queen and the Assassin trilogy and it’s by far the best! I just can’t get enough of Runo and Tamar! Especially Runo because he’s absolutely hilarious. I just love their banter. They sure face some long odds in this story as the Empress wants Runo back and Tamar has to somehow save the man she loves without sacrificing her people. I love the scheming and intrigue in this series and how it all works out is nothing short of amazing. There’s some steamy steamy scenes in this book, so enjoy. And don’t worry, they get their HEA. This is the perfect end to a great series.

I received an ARC from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Lisette Marshall’s “Gold” was the spectacular conclusion to her The Queen and the Assassin trilogy, and I have to say that it was the perfect ending to this series, at least in my opinion!

Tamar and Runo’s relationship has truly grown and developed over the course of this trilogy, and while I won’t give away any spoilers, I want to say that I’m really happy with how their story ended.

I also loved all the twists and turns the author took the reader on - every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, Lisette Marshall proved me wrong. I highly recommend this trilogy to any spicy fantasy romance lover!

I've been following Tamar and Runo for months now, and I love loved their hea. The book was an amazing mix of forbidden romance, plotting, court politics, and funny banter. It was a really satisfying and hilarious read, I was legit laughing through the last 25% of the book.

The hea was even more wholesome than I had expected, I'm still swooning at the two of them! Might go and reread my fav scenes now, I'm not ready to be done with these two 🥲 but the author already has the next trilogy in this world planned out, so, can't wait to return to this crazy world!

More trouble and secrets stir in the Kingdom, threatening to tear apart the Iron Queen and the assassin. But love conquers all, doesn't it?

I gotta say this was probably my favorite book in the trilogy! It was so fun like always with a good amount of steam! There was more growth in both Runo and Tamar which is always great to see.

Loved the ending it was sweet and perfect! Ahh I just loved these characters, such a great conclusion to a great trilogy.

Thanks for having me as part of the arc team!

overall a great series with just a few stumbling blocks at the end

Overall a great series, but the ending has a few too many loose ends and I thought there should’ve been a decent amount more resolution to some of them.

Also, I had a really hard time with what the queen chose to do to her seed of life with her first husband. Her first husband deserved everything she did to him, but the seed was innocent.

All that being said I did love everything else about these books and look forward to more from this author.

Series: The Queen & The Assassin
Book 1:Iron ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book 2: Silver ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book 3: Gold ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was the ending I was waiting for. I saw NONE (okay, well maybe some) of it coming, just swooped right at and slapped me across the face and I am here for it. Tamar's character grew so much in this series, and I know, I know, I hated her in the second book and I said a bunch of terrible things about her, but she really showed up for herself and for Runo in this book and she turned into everything I ever hoped that she could be.

I won't lie, I feel like the political aspects of this book did kind of fall flat, and I understand that maybe the political aspects of the book aren't meant to be the main focus, but I was still a little let down. I appreciated that we got to see a little bit more into that side of things, but then it just turned into marriage and babies and "the kingdom needs an heir!” and all of it just fell to the wayside. On that note, I also have to say that even though Tamar and Runo got their happily ever after, there was no real resolution with the Empire. Just… Poof! Everything is all better, nothing else to worry about now that we're married! Not to mention Lady Kaarina, we find out she's threatened with death, but it ends there. We don't get to know why. Or any of her back story, she's a main character in this book but still somehow, she's entirely skimmed over.

Overall, I recommend this series. I recommend all of the books in the 5 Kingdoms world (except maybe Velvet, but you have to start somewhere)

The third and final book in the Queen and the Assassin’s series rounds out the series in flawless fashion. Tamar and Runo are an unconventional pair. Their love survived every test that was thrown at it.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was very happy with the way Tamar and Runo’s story concluded. The character growth from Tamar and Runo is astounding. Lisette Marshall nailed it. A beautiful HEA awaits you at the end too. I recommend this whole series - it continued to get better with each book.

Devoured it like an enchanted dream!

Words wrapped in magic.
The scheming and plot twists are viciously delightful.
I was reminded of my favorite authors C J Cherryh and also the inimitable Megan Whalen Turner with Thief of Attolia.
The magical way with words (without any actual magic in world building) was all-encompassing.
I enjoyed the book so much I felt inspired to sing Arias about it.
consider this my song of glee.
unputdownable.

This book was a quick read just like the first two. It had a good balance of plot and some steam. It had a few good plot twists and for the hopeless romantic the relationship between the male and female MCs hits just right. It had a satisfying HEA, though I always love an extended epilogue. I will say the situation with the Empire didn't satisfy me, but with everything else going on it can easily be dismissed in my opinion.
