Athletes and fitness warriors in the West are constantly looking to train and recover better. They gain muscle mass through weight training but find that their sports performance suffers. They reach a target weight by following a strict diet but feel bloated or tired. They appear to be in great shape but consistently underperform because of mental stress. We need to know how to balance the different training variables available to us in order to achieve and sustain optimum fitness and performance in our lives.
In Dynamic Balance, authors Andy (Tsz Chiu) Chan and Stella (Yat Kwan) Wong show why the rigors of Western approaches to training often create imbalances in our physical and mental health. They explain traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) principles and techniques in simple terms and demonstrate how incorporating TCM into our lifestyle and workouts can help us perform at our best and be at our healthiest.
TCM is not a myth or weird alternative to real medicine but an ancient practice that's based in science and relevant to us today. In this book, you'll learn how to:
- evaluate the current state of your body and figure out your constitution type
- find the root causes of your imbalances
- adapt your diet and workouts
- strengthen your breathing and develop harmony in your movements
- make better-informed decisions about your health
Your body and fitness needs are dynamic and always changing, as are the situations in the world around you. Dynamic Balance will show you how to adjust your training, diet, and mentality to improve your performance, live a healthier life, and reach your goals.
Wow this was very fascinating to read. I'm in my fitness and healthier life journey and this truly had some insight on strength and conditioning. I loved how both of the professionals spoke without losing or confusing me. It's truly understanding and astonishing what you will learn from this!
I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway. All of the statements above are my true opinions after fully reading this book.
From boosting our mood to improving our health, there are studies which prove just how crucial and important sticking to any fitness regime is, and how it can better our life in ways that we can not even fathom.
And there is no one who starts on a fitness journey to get just mediocre outcome, as each and everyone of us wants to get hundred percent results on their heard earned bead of sweat.
Hence, there can be seen abundance of books out there which will enumerate the benefits of workouts, but what makes the book, ‘Dynamic Balance’ unique is that it can help us gain optimum fitness and overall incorporate it into our lifestyle.
As it has been rightly stated in the book, the study of human anatomy can be dated back thousands of years, and hence there are countless resources available to us in order to make effective utilization, thereby learning the specific actions for each muscle.
Also, as shown in the book, strengthening our breathing by being mindful of how we breathe can also be incidental in calming our mental state. Hence I am going to give this FIVE STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Dynamic Balance is a fascinating book taking a look at how TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) affects the body as it relates to fitness, training, and general well-being. While I am not a professional athlete (by any standard), I found the book engrossing and extremely useful in modifying my current training for better results using the TCM tools.
Coming from someone who has had no training or knowledge of TCM, I found the explanations clear, useful, and informative. The author never talked down to the reader, but at the same time never made it so overly complicated that I wasn't sure I was getting it. Everything was clearly explained with useful tables and pictures.
I also really appreciated the incredible level of organization. I read the kindle version of the book and there were references with hyperlinks everywhere. If a section referenced a previous section, the link was there. If the section mentioned something in the appendix, the link was there. I found it super useful to navigate and did find myself using the links, going back to previous sections, and rereading in order to make sure I fully understood the connection.
Finally, the "Dynamic Balance Plan" at the end is gold. Sprinkled throughout are self-assessments that you can take to find where on the continuum you are. However, at the end, the author brings it all together to help the reader find "dynamic balance." While I read the whole book, I haven't yet fully completed the plan. I am really looking forward to seeing what I can do to better balance my life as a runner and as an individual.
Overall, if you are at all curious about the role TCM can play in improving your life and performance, this is the book for you.
In general terms, exercise is something that is defined as any movement that makes our muscles work, any activity which requires our body to burn calories.
And there is no shortage of any physical activities which we can try out to gain a certain level of fitness and there are many types of such out there to help us get into a routine.
And while it is true that they may have many health benefits, both physically and mentally, these trainings also result in having some side effects on the individuals, particularly making them feel lethargic or tired.
Hence, the different principles which the authors have narrated in this book can prove to be helpful in making us focus on techniques that can be taken up in order to get a certain desired result.
Alongwith this, we also see case studies being depicted at regular intervals, which will guide us on how we can relate to them, thereby narrating the results that they may have on our health. Hence I am going to give this FIVE STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The book Dynamic Balance is different than the books that I've normally read or are my usual go-tos.
In this book the author's have explored the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and it's benefits in the process of keeping a proper balance maintained in our body mentally and physically.
Modern days and modern people have led to less belief in our traditional values and most of what the traditional teachings that we are being taught reamins forgotten or ridiculed.
The concepts of TCM is not taken seriously among today's world (as I understood from the description of the book). The author's do a very good job of explaining what TCM is and how it mainly functions.
I very much enjoyed reading something new. A must read for those in the field of medicine or are looking to know more about TCM.

Just so you know, I won this book from Goodreads. I found it very interesting. My dad often said to us, "Everything in moderation." That is part of the message here from Tsz Chiu Chan. However, mostly, it's an homage to traditional Eastern or Chinese medicine and health. That is a message that honestly is finding more and more traction in the West. Honestly, it's refreshing compared to the consumerism message of "Take this pill to change your life." Unfortunately, most Americans would rather take a pill than actually change the behaviors that cause maladies or unhealthiness. This book tells the reader how choosing the correct lifestyle can cure an awful lot of ills. So, this book may have been written with the athlete in mind, but it applies very well to anybody regardless of your age or interests. I highly recommend this book.

Balance is an inclination gotten from being entire and complete; it's a feeling of concordance. It is fundamental to keeping up with quality throughout everyday life and work
This book covers so much ground. From Qi to Fascia to the 5 Seasons and 5 Animal Frolics and a new (for the Western medical consumer) understanding of blood and organs. There is so much good information in this book but I struggled to read it all through it large chunks. And maybe that is for the best because I feel the author intended this to be used to actually improve in practical ways and not just read for entertainment purposes. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to feel better by using different approaches than the standard American fitness, diet, and recovery approaches.
Basic Overview of Chinese Medicine for Western Readers
This well-researched, quick read explains the basics of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with a Western audience in mind. The combination of illustrative stories and interactive charts made the material easy to understand. The authors balanced the history and culture of TCM with comparisons about modern, Western medicine. I recommend this book for people exploring holistic approaches to healthy living.
I received this book as a goodreads giveaway. Balance really defines this book. This is an easy to read introduction to traditional Chinese medicine. The focus is on balancing diet, recovery, and exercise. I liked that this book referenced some work by Kelly Starret as his book deskbound was a game changer for me and the techniques in that book seem to fit well into the balance around body movement, stretching, and strength this book discusses.
I received a free copy of Dynamic Balance through Goodreads. Dynamic Balance is a very easy and informative read. It includes several examples, questionnaires, charts, and other references that the reader can look into. I am going to try to put some of these practices into use and see if it helps me not only with my running but also my everyday functioning. If you have any interest in TCM, I recommend this book. It was well written and easy to understand and follow.
I am so fascinated by the relationship between TCM and sports/fitness performance. The book is really good, super educational, comprehensive, it flows by and actually really practical as well. Full of case studies where you can see the practical examples of the theory.
What's unique is the take on fitness, usually TCM books are more generalist and hard to relate too but this book is all about sports and fitness performance and that really resonates with me. 100% recommended.
Interesting and informative overview of how Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can help athletes work to achieve balance. The writing was relatable and kept me engaged.
I enjoyed learning more about things like Qi, animal movement, and yin/yang.
