Doctor Who: Interludes - I, Kamelion

Rate this book
The planet Tairot is a haven for technology, dedicated to improving the quality of life for its inhabitants one cerebral implant at a time. And yet with no memory to guide him, Kamelion finds himself to now be one of those inhabitants, taken from his self-imposed exile and forced into a human body. A seemingly permanent one.

With a new conspiracy unfolding around him, Kamelion begins his quest to find answers. Why have the Doctor and Turlough become public enemy number one? What is the truth behind the planet’s technology? And most of all… how does an android dream of electric beasts?

Currently available exclusively as a bonus download with the purchase of Doctor Who: Forty 1 from the Big Finish website.

It wasn’t intended as such, but I’m going to call this free bonus download from Big Finish Productions as an unexpected birthday present. Officially it came as a promotional download with the electronic copy of Doctor Who: Forty 1, but it arrived for download the day before my birthday, so that’s how I’m counting it. This audiobook feature Dan Starkey reading this short tale, and he does a wonderful job with multiple voices for the various characters. Starkey’s Fifth Doctor sounds very little like Peter Davison and actually quite a bit like the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton. In any case, this is a fun story that gives some redemption to the Doctor’s android companion, Kamelion. Not a great story, but entertaining.

A WELL-PRODUCED AUDIONOVELLA WITH A FORGETTABLE STORY

〰〰〰〰

Things that pass: Dialogue, Sound

Dan Starkey has a soft voice and gives every character a distinct voice, thus making the listening experience very theatrical.
Starkey's Fifth Doctor and Turlough are immaculate!
The sound effects and light music make this story a sort of enhanced audiobook, and it's very enjoyable to listen to from start to finish.
This story helps flesh out Kamelion, who was sadly a missed opportunity on the show, and we follow mostly fo the story through his eyes and mind.
There's a beautiful emotional aspect to the discussion of Kamelion's humanity.
I enjoy how things slowly turn sinister, and it's mostly up to Kamelion to save the day.

〰〰〰〰

〽️ Things that fall in between: Characters, Story, Emotions, Pacing, Novelty, Excpectations

It's kind of a slow-going story that doesn't quite seem to reach an end goal at all before it's all over.
Should I be worried about the fact that the side stuff with Five and Turlough felt more interesting than the main story, perhaps due to its higher energy levels?

〰〰〰〰

Things that don't pass: Memorability, Replay value

The villains and the monster feel like an afterthought; they're so generic that we might as well have done without them.

〰〰〰〰

2 passes, 6 in-betweens, 2 no passes = 5/10

None of us knew this was going to come out alongside Doctor Who: Forty but thank god it did. It was such a pleasant surprise to see Dominic G. Martin finally having a go at a Doctor Who audio and by god does he deserve it, such a brilliant member of the fandom who is kind to all and has contributed so much!

I, Kamelion is such a unique story featuring the titular android, with it being what if an Android became a fully fleshed human being? That alone makes for a fantastic premise but what we get is even better! This is a gorgeous character piece with some very heartfelt moments. The writing is top-notch, the characterization is on point and the concepts in it are really cool to imagine.

Overall: A brilliant way to start these interludes, Dominic has written such a great story I really hope it isn't the last we see of him as a writer from Big Finish. But we can't forget Dan Starkey who's done an amazing job narrating this fantastic tale! 9/10

I'm glad I waited until after I listened to Kamelion Empire before listening to this, because there's a bit of a callback. Once again, the audio format does a great job making Kamelion feel more like a character. Dan Starkey did a decent job narrating the whole thing.
