Captivating Guide series is not very thorough but can be informative. I was looking forward to learn something about African history but was disappointed. Yes, the book talks about Yoruba mythology, deities, creation stories but it feels disjointed. I don’t have much interest in economy so I skipped that chapter. History of Yoruba people is given without dates, or even centuries until we come to Oyo Empire when dates are suddenly thrown at the reader in a haphazard way. You need to go back and forth to get some sense of historical development.
Having said all that, I did learn enough so I can recommend this book.

This was a really interesting book for me. I learned a lot in easy way. Nothing was boring and dry in this text. I enjoyed learning about Yoruba history and important aspects of the culture in a fun way.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Unfortunately I like many other readers expected more information on the Yoruba people. Also there are parts of the book that is repetitive in the front and back of the book. I don’t know if that is an error or just to add pages to the book. The last twenty percent of the book is repetitive.

I came into this not knowing very much about Yoruba history, so I was hoping that this would get me started. I think it achieved that objective. However, it ended up not being as informative as I could have been. The book presented a lot of history about the Yoruba people but it was presented in rapid fashion with little historical perspective to bring the events into focus. Based on the title, I was anticipating both factual history and some insights into the Yoruba belief system but I didn't get as much information into Yoruba beliefs as I wanted.

I think this stands as a good introduction for someone like me who knew very little. From here, more specific information can be sought elsewhere.
