There has perhaps never been an age that set such great store in study as that in which we now live. The unfortunate thing about it is that so much of the study in our day is devoted to books and subjects in which there is little or no profit. Time is squandered on the purely speculative, the uncertain, the unprofitable, the unessential, the unproductive, the irrelevant, and the transitory. The most profitable of all study is wisely ordered Bible study. Its value is incalculable. It is beyond all comparison more profitable than any other study. It is the one superlatively profitable study.
Bible study towers above all other studies in importance and value not only because of what the Bible is, but also because of what the Bible does.
In this book, I will tell you how to properly study the for light and not for darkness, for life and not for death, for blessing and not for cursing, and so it will lift us up to heaven and not sink us down to hell.
About the Author Reuben Archer Torrey traveled all over the world leading evangelistic tours, preaching to the unsaved. It is believed that more than one hundred thousand were saved under his preaching. Torrey married Clara Smith in 1879, with whom he had five children. In 1908, he helped start the Montrose Bible Conference in Pennsylvania, which continues today. He became dean of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (now Biola University) in 1912, and was the pastor of the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles from 1915 to 1924. Torrey continued speaking all over the world and holding Bible conferences. He died in Asheville, North Carolina, on October 26, 1928.
Reuben Archer Torrey studied at Yale and in Germany before taking up a pastorate in the United States. As a gifted intellectual, administrator, and Bible teacher, he went on to pastor Moody Church in Chicago and became D.L. Moody's closest associate. In his later years, he traveled the world as an evangelist speaking to millions in Australia, New Zealand, India, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Japan, China, Hawaii, Germany, the United States, and Canada. Torrey edited the last two volumes of the monumental "The Fundamentals" and was instrumental in the founding of both Moody Bible Institute and BIOLA University.
Inspiring and helpful for young Christians or those inexperienced in Bible study.
"It is well to read a chapter of the Bible and then close the Book and see how much you can remember. Do the same with single verses. This is one of the greatest secrets of profitable study of any kind - concentrated attention."
"Since the Bible is God's book, the only kind of study that is fitting to it is every-day-study."
Those that know me, know that I didn’t begin my journey in trying to be a good Christian woman until I had reached the age of 69, when I’d published my first two Christian books on January 11, 2020, which inspired me to become a Christian blogger. Since then, I’ve developed a passion for sharing the Lord’s words.
The only problem was I did everything on my own without the benefit of a proper bible study, yet somehow I’ve succeeded in growing my knowledge of Scripture. For proof, read my blog or my third Christian book, where I discuss 40 topics using the words of the Lord.
This is the type of book I wish I had when I began my journey, as it would have served as the enlightenment of things I might have missed. The best analogy regarding how I feel regarding not possessing an adequate bible study under my belt comes from what can be found as part of EZEKIEL 12:2; “…They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear.” While I know what I read, I might not have possessed the knowledge I could have obtained through a proper study.
While this book was originally written over 100 years ago, I found it to be a valuable resource for anyone, especially myself, who desires to possess a proper and better understanding of the Lord’s words to better share them correctly with others or for their own gratification.
For wanting to educate readers, so they’re able to study and understand the Bible, I’ve given the publishers 5 STARS for keeping the purpose of this book alive after 100 years.
This is a short book (4 chapters) and covers two main topics: The importance of Bible study, and the general principles of Bible interpretation. I found it very encouraging. It made me very motivated to really study God’s word. The last chapter (each chapter is basically a sermon) is an address the graduates of the Bible Institute where Dr Torrey taught. It was about “seven promises to Bible students and soul winners” and was very inspiring. I don’t necessarily agree with all his lines of reasoning, and it is a bit wordy, but overall I liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who would like to be encouraged in their own study of the Bible.
If you are serious in your walk with Christ, read this book and meditate upon the verses therein. If you are not serious, REPENT!!! Ask the Holy Spirit for His conviction and wisdom. Remove your rose colored glasses, take the plank out of your own eye and learn to, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (He will not disappoint either, God bless whomever reads this review and Lord convict their heart). Amen.
A Great Read for those who want to study the Bible but do not know how.
This is a great book for the Christian who has always wondered how to study and mine the rich gems in the Bible. The author lays the basic foundations of what is required in one's personal life before even attempting to study the Bible. It is a joy to read how to study the Bible and apply it to your daily life. An exciting book to read and can be done in a few hours or days for deeper assimilation.
This is a book that every christian should read. Like the books, like this one, that feels like you are talking to the author. From the very beginning this book capture my attention and point me to Christ and to live for His glory.
R.A Torrey provides a powerful discourse on why the Bible and the Bible alone is superior to all other books and One's approach towards it is what is received from it and some very important points about how to do your own study
What a great little book, even 100 years on! I’m now an RA Torrey fan. My favorite quote comes very near the end, speaking of God as our constant companion: “If we go His way, He will go ours.”
