Learning about the occult is like learning about philosophy; you can't understand it until you give up on trying to understand it and instead enjoy the brief flashes of illumination whenever you can get them.

this book is not a how-to guide or even a manual, it's just an introduction t an obviously convoluted topic that advertises itself by making sure you understand that you won't find any clear cut answers or definitions regardless of how many books you read on the subject.

I must confess it left me frustrated for a bit but I guess now is as good a time as any to stop "big picturing" everything and just enjoy the ride.

It is a nice, short introductory book to get you started. It covers the history of the movement, its philosophy, arguments of why it might work and some basic rituals. Its biggest strengths are that it doesn't takes itself too seriously and that it assumes that the reader is pragmatic and logical, not someone who expects mystical, fantasy spells or something.

The sort of magic(k) that I can see as having "validity" to it is close to the sort that Alan Moore proposed - magic taken as a formal metaphor for the art of ritual deception, more or less. Media narratives as magic. Advertisement, political lies as magic. Brand logos as magical sigils. Law of attraction, self-help literature, autosuggestion, "fake it 'til you make it". I could picture a certain potential for chaos magic theory to be able to expand on all of that, but this book is definitely way off the mark on that level - it provides a brief historical overview of chaos magic and then rapidly spirals into the same sort of arbitrary theatrical hocus-pocusing and jerking off on pentagrams that the whole movement allegedly promised to avoid. One could perhaps claim that this bait-and-switch is also to be considered as some kind of a meta-expression of the theme of chaos, but at that point you're not providing solutions, but just wasting time on semantics. At least the book is short.

A very fun and accessible introduction to Chaos Magick! Hine outlines a basic history of 20th magickal practice leading up to and through the development of Chaos Magick, then provides some helpful rules of thumb for engaging with the Chaos current specifically, and with magickal practice more generally. The appendices are also very interesting, showcasing how magickal practices manifest themselves in the day-to-day life of an individual - namely, Hine himself. The only gripe I have is the large amount of very obvious typos, but they aren't too hard to ignore, and obviously don't detract from the text's content, so no big deal.

P.S. this entire text is available as a free PDF download on the Chaos Matrix website (www.chaosmatrix.org).

This was a 68-page PDF that was suggested to me as an introduction to the principles (or lack thereof) of Chaos Magick. Phil Hine put together what is a brief, 'structured' and humorous take on of some of the basis of chaoists' practices, accounts of experiments and potential avenues for exploration. It is really a first introduction, and since Chaos Magick is in itself more personalised, each one's practice will be unique. Hine simply hints at possible steps to be taken and where you can be creative with your practice.
I'm not personally into magick, but I'm interested in the subject and I think this has some useful tidbits, and is itself a doorway to other knowledge and sources.

A condensed "Condensed Chaos", sort of like a Cliffs Notes of it.

Short, sweet, and to the point. Very good for people looking for the quick basics and philosophy behind Chaos magic.
