Maybe baseball fans have heard some of the stories in Roy Lingster's book, but I guarantee they've not heard all of them. And maybe they've heard portions of the stories, but not the fully-researched details that he provides in "A Game of Extremes."
This is a fun book that can be read in a binge fest or savoured over time. I consider myself a fan of baseball history, but I learned a lot from this. Sure, there's the stories of Satchel Paige in there that we know about, but there's also the nuggets that make this book neat. We've all heard of Herb Washington and his pinch running duties in 1974, but did you know he was 0 for 3 on the base paths in Oakland's World Series that year?
There's also a fun chapter on Bill "Spaceman" Lee of the Red Sox and Expos and a chapter on pitchers who hurled no hitters while trying not to hurl from being drunk the night before.
There are a lot of fun facts in this collection of tales. I'll be waiting for the next 25 stories Roy Lingster digs up.
Not bad. A book of baseball stories and personalities in the style of "Bill Stern's Favorite Baseball Stories," but not as well written. This book is in sore need of an editor. Numerous times I found myself having to re-read clumsily written sentences. Descriptions of plays were sometimes confusing, and often players were mentioned, but not what team(s) they played on, or what position they played.
But the stories were often interesting nonetheless. Not bad.
I have definitely read better baseball books. I suspect the writer was attempting to reach the casual fan or maybe not a fan at all. I caught several historical errors. I read the audiobook version, and the narration was possibly the worst I’ve ever experienced in that format. The narrator’s tone was fairly flat throughout, and he mispronounced several player’s names. There were some decent stories included in this book, but I can’t recommend it.
Hilarious reading, I was actually chuckling out loud and couldn't wait to finish it! It might not be the most insightful or poignant book about baseball but it is one of the most enjoyable and smooth-flowing ones. I learned a lot of behind the scenes facts and I plan to get back to this book to tell amusing stories to my friends! Highly recommend!
If you like baseball and obscure baseball history this is a decent read. Writing is not particularly good. The stories either the facts to support the tale are more interested to this reader.
Underwritten. Poorly written. Did not enjoy the tales about players that were on drugs or drunk on the mound or at the plate. Not very admirable stories. Disappointed.
It's a quick read if you're a diehard fan of baseball. I'd say 1/2 of the stories aren't interesting, and only about 10% were very interesting and/or hilarious. Avoid if you're not a baseball fan.
