Been doing this since 1973...sometimes go a long time not doing this....can see a very marked difference in level of vitality. His suggestions has worked for me.

His first book was written in 1942. I have them all and learned so much, applied it, tested and proved it for myself. For me, it has worked!

I keep reviewing his books from 1973 till just yesterday:-)

I was sorely disappointed when I received this book in the mail last night. I was expecting a fun and informative recipe book filled with fresh fruits and vegetables to make my body happy. Instead, Dr. N. W. Walker's Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices: What's Missing in Your Body? was a bunch of dated information delivered by a preachy and arrogant Dr. The book was published in 1970 (a fact which I should have checked prior to ordering I suppose) which makes the information nearly fifty years old. Much has transpired in the world of nutrition and our understanding of how the body works in the last fifty years and so, in reading this book, one has to be careful not to be ignorant of current ideas.

This book advocates drinking raw fruit and vegetable juices as is apparent from the title, but, not only does it encourage this practice as part of a healthy lifestyle - it also promotes it as a main source of nutrients, denouncing and diminishing the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables raw. It does make small mention of how and why fiber is important in a balanced diet but it is clear that the author feels that the benefits of the juice weighs more heavily on the healthy functioning of our bodies than does the fiber found in whole foods.

The author is a staunch vegetarian and a raw food vegetarian at that. Of course, if that's how you choose to live, I have no problem with it, but what I don't appreciate is someone treating cooked food as if it had the plague. I get why he's against fried foods; there isn't much, if any, nutritional value in a french fry, but a raw potato is no fun at all! This was the paragraph that really turned me off:

"Strict vegetarians who eschew cow's milk, flour, grain, and concentrated sugar products, are not afflicted with these [respiratory] troubles, particularly if they were brought up from childhood to shun and avoid these foods. This is not by any manner or means fanatical. It is just plain common sense and perfectly natural, and proved beyond question or doubt from experience (25)."

The language in the paragraph is exceedingly pompous. I just don't buy it. I don't have any respiratory problems, and never have, and I include milk, flour and grains (as well as sugar but I have to partially agree with the good Dr. on this point) in my diet. Also, earlier he suggest "exclud[ing] grains and starches (24)" which isn't healthy as our bodies need these elements to maintain a healthy metabolism and digestive flow.

Another big issue I have with this book is that it is very self-promotey. He mentions his other book several times, in big, bolded capital letters and highly recommends it to everyone. Put a list of your work at the beginning or end of your book and maybe mention it once or twice during the text but that's my limit. I don't want to hear about how awesome you think you are, I want to read about the subject - that's why I picked the book up in the first place. I also found it disconcerting when he mixed in some very religious sentiments to his text and didn't differentiate this religious opinion from scientific fact - he even used a quote from the bible to help support his argument (75).

As I mentioned, I was quite disappointed with this book. I must admit I didn't read all the words because I was so disenchanted but I certainly got the gist of what Dr. Walker was interested in - self promotion and righteousness! I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone; there are other more recent, more reliable and less judgemental books on this topic out there!

Interesting Read. The premise of the book is that after years of eating "dead" food we develope diseases. All processed foods are devoid of live enzymes which our bodies need to function properly. Sugars, starches and pasteurized milk are the biggies. Juicing RAW vegetables and fruits and eating an abudance of raw fruits and vegetables will cure and prevent disease. He goes through different juicing combos but the main one is spinach and carrot juice - it's good for almost everything.

i got this book at D.I. for 50 cents. I think i have one of the original versions because they don't even have the edition listed here on goodreads! i can't believe how much the actual knowledge is still relevant. the biggest difference i can tell would be the technology of "juicing", with modern machines it is A LOT easier! I got this book because i am starting a new "enjoying my eating" goal next week. raw juices will be part of that! i would highly recommend this book...i especially enjoy reading the section where he goes off on how phonics combined with carrot juice 2 or 3 times a day will ensure the success of your child.

and then there is this...which, i actually dream of "Of course, the ideal situation is for one or two families to acquire 4 or 5 acres of tillable land, with plenty of water available, with about 1 or 2 of these acres in trees. Keep two or three milk goats, a small flock of good poultry which would feed off the fields, a vegetable and fruit organic garden and two or three beehives to yield 60-75 lbs of honey a year or more. ...such a dream CAN come true. Do not let an inferiority complex deter you: others have done it--you can. remember the old proverb: Aim at the sky and you'll hit higher than a tree!"

the next sentence is "reverting back to the milk problem..." aaahhhh, such the style of the author....love it!

This book is all about juice. Colon cleansing + juices = body detox and healing.
Fruit juice provides carbohydrates to heal body while vegetables juice provides proteins to nurture body. He repeats a lot about carrot juice as in all his other books.
Here, author prefers vegetables juice to smooth because:
1) juice will be absorbed fast in body
2) current agriculture methods use a lot of chemicals and pesticides, these toxic components will be kept in fiber. By using juice, fiber is removed, it means toxic parts are also removed

In addition, the quality of juicer is very import because it will affect how much nutrients from vegetables can be extracted and be oxidized. Cold press juicer is the best and most expensive.

In general, the book brought me many knowledge that help me understand more about each part of my body. How they work and teamwork with others. And also the harmness of glucozo, protein, sugar, milk,...
One thing I don’t like (very very unlike) is the way author wrote. It let me have to read many times to understand. It doesn’t go directly to the point. Sideline stories distracted me to absorb this enormous information. The most important information is in some 1-2 first paragraphs of one part, the remaining is sideline stories and many boring sentences just repeat “trẻ hoá” make me stuck in acknowledge.

Love this book! Its a bit older but it is still really informative. Walker breaks the facts about each vegetable or fruit, and tells you what juice helps with what sickness. I personally found this book most helpful for juicing, as well as, educational on various topics such as milk, colds, and raw food. It is a must for all juice lovers!

No one has written a book like this sense. Current books describe recipes for pleasure. Dr. Walker juice juice combinations as prescriptions or remedies for relief for various ailments. The best of the Juicing books.

The recipes are okay, nothing special. But you know something's wrong when the authors need to parade the academic titles just to make a homeopathic point.
