THIS WAS FUN ! I know the new 52 era gets alot of hate, but I really enjoyed that era for how it broke the rules, it was a lil bit more edgier and fun ! This nightwing run was no exception. The nostalgia is REAL when I read this book. I will say that the writing flowed really well, Artwork was great. I kinda wish Eddy Barrows stayed the entire run though, but Brett Booth killed it as well ! I could tell higgins writing slowed down a bit with the crossovers came around, then it got good again. He dug into his background story, there were some twists and a lil bit of a surprise in here, I had fun with this. He kinda took a lil bit of a peter parker/spider man style of writing when it came to the character of Nightwing. I do dig the red costume but I'm glad in Rebirth, they brought back the O.G blue and black one back. That will always be the best. This was a good read.

One of my favourite new 52 bat family books. Really enjoyed reading through in this nice collected format.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Higgins’ Nightwing run starts off extremely strong, but tends to meander towards its finale. This is due in part to how DC was managing its titles at the time, and how crossovers were handled. Higgins’ handles this better than many of his contemporaries at the time though.

Saiko is a cool villain that kicks off the run, and provides a fun challenge for Nightwing. The reveal of who they are, and the consequences of their schemes, creates some tense moments for Dick, and echoes throughout the rest of the run. I also enjoy seeing Grayson embrace his circus roots, and I thought it was a great idea to have him become the eventual owner of Haly’s and travel with them.

Nightwing ties into the Court of Owls arc more deftly than his fellow Bat members, especially with the reveals connecting Dick to the Court. The tie ins to Death of the Family, are also handled well, with Higgins’ creating a gut punch moment for Nightwing, and resolving events from the previous arcs.

Once Nightwing moves to Chicago, and DC’s editorial intervenes, the story begins to decline. The Second City arc isn’t overly exciting, and with Nightwing’s identity being blown in Forever Evil, the title quickly has to wrap up. You can see that Higgin had many more stories to tell, but was quickly shuffled off the title. A real shame.

Overall a middle of the road Omnibus, that starts off strong, but ends abruptly. I’d recommend Dick/Nightwing fans check this one out though since it does tie in and kick off the absolutely phenomenal Grayson run by Tim Seeley and Tom King.

I honestly forgot how good New 52 Nightwing was. The Court of Owls, Chicago, Tony Zucco, the Prankster — all of it was excellent. Higgins really nailed Dick’s voice and character. I basically have only two issues with it.

The reveal of the main villain in the first arc was actively anticlimactic. The bad guy takes off his mask, we get a full-page shot of his face with the big reveal… “Raymond.” And like — who the hell is Raymond? The whole scene is played as if it’s some shocking moment where readers are supposed to recognize the name, but this is literally the first time ever that “Raymond” has been mentioned in Nightwing’s entire history. It’s just such an odd choice.

My second problem is with Juan José Ryp’s art. I don’t know if it was intentional, but the facial expressions are terrible — like someone took a photo of a person at the worst possible moment from the most unflattering angle. Thankfully, Ryp didn’t stay on pencil duties for long. Other than that, it’s an excellent read and I recommend it to anyone who loves Nightwing. You won’t regret it.

Overall this was a fun run. I artists changing from arc to arc is not jarring and keep the same quality. I love the court of owls and death of a family tie ins as well as the issues with lady shiva, and also the arc with the prankster.

This was one of the first superhero omnibus' I bought. A couple of years ago when I got into comics, I had little to no interest in superheroes, and frankly, thought I would never so much as dip my toe into the world of capes, codpieces and super powers. Needless to say, that didn't exactly last long. It'll never be my favourite genre, and I'm a very picky when it comes to my superheroes (though I am with everything I read). Needless to say, a Nightwing omnibus wasn't exactly top of my to buy pile, although a cheap price and a recommendation led to dive in. Having just read it I can say, despite this book coming and going with little fanfare (and it now fetching a pretty penny on the secondary market), I would gladly have passed on it with the benefit of hindsight. I can't speak for every authors interpretation of the character, although here, he comes across as discount Batman at best, and... dear lord, discount Deadpool at worst. His glib, pithy demeanour really wasn't to my liking. I have a hard enough time taking superheroes seriously as it is, so when the author clearly doesn't allow the character to be taken seriously, that's a big no no in my books. Th dark and gritty Gotham city doesn't need this brand of glitter and jovial optimism. That said, it started out reasonably solid, although absolutely went downhill after about the halfway point, and a noticeable change in the narrative.
Despite the very high standard of art throughout the majority of the book, there are just FAR too many artist changes to build up any kind of consistency and security with the art. You know each time a new artist comes along, despite how good they might be, you're only gonna get a few issues tops before someone else inherits the book, though the revolving door of artists is the lesser of this books transgressions. Not to mention the lacklustre collection of issues it draws together. Numerous times throughout this book, you'll be dropped in the middle of an entirely different arc (with some major spoilers for other runs) without being provided those issues or any sort of forewarning that this won't provide all the necessary material, and will spoil numerous others runs. Classic modern DC, really.
Yet Kyle Higgins writing is the main reason this book falls short for me. I've lamented that far too often for my liking, when it comes to writing comic books, comic book writers are the lowest rung on the writing totem pole. As if the art of writing itself is frequently absent from the medium entirely. Like comic book readers will settle for little more than drivel, as long as there are some bright colours and someone getting punched. It really feels like your average comic book writer hasn't graduated beyond eight grade English in terms of ability, but as long as all the tropes and contrivances are present and counted for, you're at least guaranteed a modicum of success and long jeopardy within the industry. I wouldn't pay Kyle Higgins to write in a clothing catalogue. The man missed so many opportunities for greatness here I don't know where to start. At the end of the day, it was a comic book, with all the middling competence and effort that goes along with a semi modern comic book run. I'm sure this run would be something of a masterpiece compared to what's coming out now, but this really was exceedingly average in my book. If it wasn't a rare book that isn't likely to be reprinted, I would probably flog it off pretty quick. It's lucky it isn't in the high 2's to be honest. 3/5

Fantastic book, does Nightwing proud. Mostly standalone arcs that are all really solid. Some stories are tie ins with Snyder’s Batman series, but even if you haven’t read that you’ll have enough context that you won’t be lost.

Really enjoy the struggles Dick Grayson faces as “Batman-lite” and being his own person/hero.

This book would also be great jumping on point if you aren’t familiar with Nightwing as a character, no prior knowledge required to enjoy.

I really enjoyed this. Some nice origin stories, great writing that ties in the story well with a heartfelt ending. Love the 52 reboot. Looking forward to more Nightwing omnibus prints, hopefully we get a Chuck Dixon version soon.

Really liked the Court Of Owls and Death Of The Family tie ins. Some great double spreads and Brett Booth kills it drawing NightWing. Pg. 767 has probably my favourite quote in the book and my favourite double page is on pg. 489. Also has a solid rogues gallery but no real standouts to me

Nightwing finally gets an omnibus! So sweet! Let us hope we'll have many more. He's got a ton of great material that needs the omnibus format.

I had a fun time, if not a particularly profound time.
Was a solid entry in the life of Dick Grayson, with Kyle Higgins bringing a real Everyman vibe to our titular character

The Russell Dauterman issues, while small in #, are definitely the highlight of this omnibus, and they come near the end. The first half is decent, as well, with some twists and turns involved in Grayson’s purchase of the old circus.

look i know what people say about this nightwing run, but i wanted to read it for myself as always and i really liked it. i havent read any nightwing before but i really like how kyle higgins wrote him. first of all the first arc was amazing, exploring dicks past with the circus and really tying into the night if the owls storyline from snyders batman. it just does a really good with expanding the story and world building . i really liked when he met with batgirl in south beach connection too. then the actual night of the owls is actually phenomenal. then the arc with paragon was a nice little mystery. and then lady shiva was also fun to read and more of nightwings backstory with issue 0. then came death of the family amazing story and tragic for nightwing. he loses everything once more and even more with issue 18 requiem. when he goes to chicago with second city was really interesting and a nice change. the beginning stories were kind of weakly written and got me confused but it got stronger. prankster wasnt the greatest villain but i liked zucco. then the story with marionette/mali was kind if weird but still not bad. zero year was interesting. i really really liked the last arc with the little girls parents being murdered. how grayson deals with the girl and helps her really shows how this whole run has been developing him and showing what kind of person he really is. the one that helps people move on and do better. his talk with her at the end was really satisfying, heartwarming, and almost made me cry. a great ending to the whole prince of gotham. then the last issue was confusing because i didnt read forever evil but it was still good. the origin story was alright and the love story was sad for him😭 also the annual was fun.

This is a collection of five volumes that goes as:
Nightwing: Traps and Trapezes
Nightwing: Night of the owls
Nightwing: Death of the family
Nightwing: Second city
Nightwing: Setting son

I adore Dick so much, and I am glad that I decided to read this run, it was very interesting to see more of him, he is the highlight of DC.

It started out okay but it ended very well. Each volume has a good storyline and the ending of this series was very solid and nice, I enjoyed each volume very much and it was nice to see some of the batman villains here, such as the court of owls, mad hatter...ect.
