New York Billionaires #4

A Ticking Time Boss

Rate this book
The golden angel who swooped in to save me from a nightmare first date turns out to be a billionaire vulture circling the company I work for.

Carter Kingsley: My savior and ruthless corporate raider hell bent on destroying the newspaper I love. Oh, and my new boss.

His first order of business? Cut half the staff. I should hate him. Easy, right?

Wrong.

I met him two weeks ago, when he saved me from the most awkward first date of my life. I was looking for a way out when he strolled up in a ten-thousand dollar suit with a winning smile, and told a white lie that turned the date from hell into heavenly bliss.

I left with his number in my phone, and spent the next two weeks staying up late to text him. He's charming. Funny. Sincere.

Completely unlike the ruthless villain who comes in and carves us up.

My first order of business is to interview the new boss. But who is sitting on the other side of the desk? The man who saved and charmed me, or the one who’s threatening everything I hold dear?

Carter insists that we can still be friends, but I know that the whole situation is a ticking time bomb.

Hi there! I'm Olivia.
I write romance with billionaire heroes (despite never having met one in person). They're strong, ambitious, they don't need love... until they meet the women who change their minds.

I love witty banter, smart heroines, big cities and perfectly tailored suits. You'll find all four in every one of my books! 💜

“You think highly of yourself, don’t you?”
“Can I tell you a secret?”
“The most brilliant woman on earth loves me. So yeah, I think pretty highly of myself. How can I not?”

Many thanks to my mom's Kobo collection for providing me this cheese-fest of a book when I apparently needed it the most.

Olivia Hayle has effortlessly become a go-to author for me, because her writing is simple and the way she writes romance and smut make me all mushy.
Hence, I know where to look when I'm in need of something sweet and cute to pass the time with.

A Ticking Time Boss is probably one of the tamer romance books I've read, lately. The story itself is lovely and enjoyable.
The two main characters are both likeable and the way they go from strangers, to friends to lovers is natural and the dual pov is definitely a plus.
There was really little drama, which I can't say I didn't like. It was all very light and cute, even too much so, and while it was filled to the brim with romance, the plot left tons of space to both main characters's individual career growth and their personal relationship with their family and friends.

It was overall a quick and nice read, but it was a tad too...simple for my tastes, and had some flaws that kept it from getting more than 3 stars.
For example, I didn't like how the MMC kept calling the FMC kid, because it felt really patronizing. On the other hand, I appreciated that Carter never let the power imbalance between him and Audrey get in the way of their story. Not gonna lie, at this point, it was all so uneventful I wouldn't have minded a little unmotivated ruckus to spice things up a little.
I was also a little surprised to find out Audrey is 27, because, despite being very driven and smart, she also sounded a lot younger than her actual age.

In short, we can say this is a perfect palette cleanser unpretentious romance novel that you won't regret picking up if you're a fan of the genre and are searching for a love story that doesn't hold back on the cheese and a fictional pairing who's got chemistry and swore off angst for good.

You know what his was? It was cute. Cute and sappy. But an enjoyable reward all the same. It filled a gap.

From the first chapter I though I’d be getting a Tristan Miles type character but what I got was a kinda vanilla rich dude and a vanilla cute girl. She did have some backbone though to be fair.

Carter Kingsley was a smug rich guy in a bar that rescues our poor old heroine from a disastrous first date. All good so far. Knight in shining armour - me love. Hot cocky rich guy - me love love. Texting banter - me love love love. Then, (pause for dramatic effect) he gives her a nickname, and he calls her it throughout the goddamn book. Now if your a regular reader of my reviews, you’ll know I’m nit a huge fan of a nickname UNLESS it’s good. And fits the story. And isn’t just there to try and fit in with the rest of the cool kids. So what does he call her? I hear you cry. Wait for it… wait….

“KID”

That’s it that’s the nickname. And why? Well isn’t it obvious? She’s all of six years younger than him. Yup. And he says it, over and over and over. Along with another he r nickname, because one is clearly not enough!
And thus, I fell out of love with the book. Not just because of the nickname (even though it was tempting) but because the rest of the book really didn’t get all that interesting.

It was okay. Nothing amazing. Great for a filler read. Low angst, low sexy times, so a nice easy one. If that’s your thing.

This book had my respiratory system broken.
Haha. It's not funny. 😐

3.75!

Carter Kingsley, oh God, this man is such a sweetheart, I wanna cry. When i saw the series title as billionaire romance, i expected him to be like all other: You know,
Cold and ruthless and scary and "I have enough money to buy you."😈👁👅👁

Let me tell you. HE WASN'T.

AND GUESS WHAT??
His d*ck doesn't twitch at every sight of her! I KNOW RIGHT? CRAZY.

I don't think this man has a single bone in his body, meant to hurt people. Like, seriously. He's hilarious and so damn HILARIOUS, my mom had to call in on the doctor to make sure I'm mentally doing okay.

There were times where this book got so realistic, i didn't even know if it was real or not. It's bit draggy and boring at times, but a short read to fill up your Read Books.

QUOTES:

"Your bed is so big. "

Several inappropriate replies flit through my mind. One even hovers on my tongue, but I don't want her to feel pressured. Not ever.

"Mhm."

"It's too gory for a date. What about... this one?" She uses the remote to hover over a romantic comedy.

"Sure. I'll mostly be watching you."

A Ticking Time Boss is not exactly tick the right box for me. Miss Hayle fails to bring the climax into something more interesting. The plot is flat. No interesting drama. No comedy either.

The characters are loveable The rest is so so.

This was GREAT, the kind of easy, sexy romance that I love to binge in one sitting. I'm new to the series, and the first thing I did when I finished this was add the other interconnected standalones to my TBR - which tells you how much I enjoyed this. It was lighter and less angsty than anticipated, with likable characters and TONS of chemistry. I loved the playfulness and all of the banter, and there is certainly a bit of heat. The sexual tension and forbidden aspect kept me hooked, and there was just enough friction between these two to keep things interesting. I love a good strangers to lovers romance, and the memorable meet cute combined with the office romance vibes made this a distinct read. Sure, it plays up the tropes and doesn't delve too deep, but it felt fresh and interesting - and you definitely don't need to read the series in order.

The story follows Audrey, a journalist who gets nervous whenever she goes on dates. She hasn't done a lot of dating, so it always makes her anxious. While waiting for a late blind date, Audrey meets handsome businessman in a bar. He's SO not her type, but Carter is kind and easy to talk to. So when Audrey's date finally arrives and things don't go well, Carter comes to her rescue. Afterwards, the two strike up a text-based friendship, and all seems to being going well... until Audrey discovers that Carter is the heartless suit who just bought the newspaper she works for and fired a bunch of her coworkers. That's not what she expected of her new friend, and it throws off their personal and professional dynamic. But Carter has enjoyed getting to know Audrey, and he won't let her abandon their budding friendship so easily.

From the very first scene, these two have some serious CHEMISTRY. I loved the meet cute, and I was all smiles as they got to know each other. It was interesting that Audrey thought they had friend chemistry, and she certainly works off of that assumption throughout the first half - getting Carter's advice as she goes on a few disappointing first dates, navigating their new working relationship, and appreciating his friendship. There's just enough drama to spark some jealousy without being over the top, and I really liked Carter as a character. We get to know him better in the second half, and there are some great intimate moments along the way, both in and out of the bedroom. Hayle writes excellent steam, and the few scenes we got in this were certainly fan-worthy. All in all, the kind of light and sexy romance that's perfect for bingeing.

Yorum yapmayı hiç sevmem aslında 🙈Kitap okurken ruh halim büyük etken oluyor. Mesela bu kitap orta karar okunur bence. Ama okurken nasıl sıkıldım nasıl anlatamam . Süründü resmen. Seride bir ve üçüncü hikayeler daha keyifliydi. İki ve dörtte biraz sıkıldım. Öyle yani 😁

I'm so disappointed. I've loved this series and could not wait to read the final installment, but it was a let down. I've just finished it and I've forgotten most of what happened in it. I was bored throughout and the cute moments were few and far between.

First Person, Dual POV 🫶🏻

Carter (MMC) and Audrey (FMC's)

Pros:
There's not much to say tbh. The FMC is a smart, hard-working journalist, so she has that going for her at least.

Cons:
This book was so slow that it felt 10.000.000 pages long 🐌 😴

Carter is so charming, friendly, and outgoing, so why exactly does he have no real, close friends? If not women, at least men. It doesn't make any sense at all 🤷🏼‍♀️.
And I understand that he was attracted to Audrey from the start, but treating her with so much familiarity at work from the get-go was, imo unprofessional and premature. 🤨🤦🏼‍♀️

Like Audrey says around the 1/3rd mark, they seem to have very little in common. And I see no real obstacle in them being together, except for the fact that he's her boss'st boss. I appreciate this dynamic sometimes, but this is the 4th book in the series, and so far, it's been the exact same thing over and over again 🤨😒🙄.

The contrast in s*xual experience between the MC's is so cliché: he's a charming playboy who enjoys dating and sleeping around, yet she's a beautiful & inexperienced girl who has hardly dated because she was too busy being the perfect daughter by being responsible and studying... pleaseeeee... try to be slightly more original 😑😩🥱.

I hate the MMC's nickname towards thr FMC as: "Kid" 😖🤢. Just No.

Final thoughts: Feel free to skip this one. There's not much substance pot wise. The MC's are as exciting as a cardboard box and as plain as vanilla.

Happy reading! 📚

Tried to quit but Amazon won't stop recommending Patriarchial Parables to me. Wow, constant casual reminders that hes doing this against his goodness.

Wow who are you trying to convince this is a morally good person??

How can anyone open their legs for someone after they just watched them ruin livelihoods?

But the papers prestige is more important.

When do the heroes show up?

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Office Romance

Received as an ARC & leaving my honest review

Struggling 50% of the book as the story pacing rather too slow for me but both main characters had a great chemistry
The last 30% of the book are the best chapter , I regretted that just too short but what I wouldn’t give to actually gave this book a for stars unfortunately I get really ill feel most of the times when the H has to called h “ kid” I mean she is not that young and he is absolutely not that old
This name calling - Nick name make the book less enjoyable
But overall this is a good story with HEA

Well written as per usual from Olivia Hayle but it took me 6 months to finish. I felt like it dragged in the middle and I didn't really feel the chemistry between the h and H. Their banter just felt....off? Stilted? Idk. Also, if a man ever called me "Kid" as a nickname on a regular basis, I would puke.

I felt like the h overreacted a couple times and the drama at the end seemed unnecessary as well.

Wouldn't recommend this one but Olivia Hayle has so many other books I would recommend! I will read her future works, of course.

Olivia is one of my favourite authors. She writes easy to read rom stories but her characters always face difficulties or have a heavy background history that makes them feel real. This book also did not disappoint and it is definitely on my top 5 of this author.

Carter is a mixture of brooding yet humorous personality that just makes you swoon. I believe he is the perfect combination of two other characters from Olivia, Julian and Anthony. Audrey is younger by 6 years, smart, date-awkward but when it comes to Carter she is all confident and sassy. He is old enough to have tasted the single life and he realizes that this lifestyle only leads to an empty and lonely house. She wants to date but she keeps going to wrong blind dates. On one of this dates, she is being saved by Carter and they exchange phone numbers. Their banter through the messages is so sweet and funny and slowly they build a solid friendship. After a few weeks, it turns out that they both work for the same company and that's when the fun and problem begins. There is another parallel story though that interconnects them and adds spice in their relationship.

I loved the fact that the other couples from NY Billionaires appear and we see how their lives have evolved but they also play their part in the story. They are not just being mentioned, they actual affect the outcome either by their behaviour or by giving advice to Carter.

Cant wait for the next books by Olivia!

I received an ARC copy for a honest review.

I read this as an audiobook, but oh boy was it not it…

First of all, it should be illegal to have a character be nicknamed “kid” by their romantic partner 💀💀

Idk why a 6 year age gap is exaggerated so much throughout the book. It’s literally 26/32, and I absolutely HATED how Carter called Aubrey “kid,” especially after they started hooking up and dating. I know they started off as friends and it started with a joke to introduce their ages, but the fact that it stuck took me out of the book every time it was said 💀💀

I just checked to see how many time he used the nickname “kid”….. the grand total is 84 times 🫡🫥🥴 and it’s consistently throughout the book 🤢

I also wasn’t super invested/didn’t buy the friends to lovers romance. The chemistry was nonexistent and I cared for these characters the least compared to the others in the series.

Book 2 remains superior in my eyes 🫡

I was planning to write a longer review but the heat has melted my brain completely so I don't think that's gonna happen.

This was a really sweet read and I really really liked it.

The only weird thing for me was the hero, Carter, calling Audrey, the heroine 'kid'.
Yeah, that was pretty unsettling lol. 😳🙈

But apart from that, I imhaled it all in one go.

And srsly, I freaking LOOOOOVE this series!

I have realized I don’t enjoy books where they keep each other a secret. Where there’s a reason why they don’t want their relationship to be known by others. In this case, he’s her boss’s boss’s boss. I don’t think I like forbidden romance as a trope
