Fu Li was a yaoguai from the countryside who had never seen the world. After entering the city, his biggest dream was to become a civil servant and leave his name in historical records.
However… He didn’t have a university degree. Not even a high school graduation certificate.
So, even a yaoguai would not be able to find a good job if they didn’t study well.
This is the story of Fu Li and Zhuang Qing. Fu Li was a country yao who doesn't have much experience on city life and a bit lacking on human common sense. On the other hand, Zhuang Qing is the half dragon half human chief of the bureau that manages the yao and cultivators of the country.
The world building is okay, I like the fact that yao, cultivators and normal humans are trying to live in harmony. I like the main characters, secondary characters and a few of the side characters.
The plot is quite free flowing(?), I think. There were some foreshadowing of some sort of peril so I kinda guessed the plot twist. The romance was slow at the start then somehow abruptly they were together. Not sure what to feel about the romance on the book but they were cute together though.👍
I have mix feelings towards this book. There were parts that I like and some parts that were just meh for me. The latter chapters were quite emotional and I felt that.😢
I guess it was an okay read. I did enjoy majority of the book.👍
Fu Li, a small, unassuming, harmless little rabbit yao, wakes up after a 2000 year long nap to find that the human world has changed massively, and things that used to be abundantly found in nature during his childhood are now considered precious treasures.
Fu Li, now technically a rich second -generation yao, cares little for precious stones or gold or secret cultivation refining tools that he has by the dozen. No, his goal is the civil service exam of the human world!
This story has a very humorous tone throughout. Fu Li and his naivety, contrasted by his strong sense of self and morality, unchanged throughout the years and unable to be influenced by evil doers, make him a beloved comrade in the yao-equivalent of the police force. Especially as many ancient fiends and auspicious beasts seem to keep popping out of the woodwork after similarly long naps.
There is a minor overarching plot, and a subtle romance woven into the story, but mainly it's just fun to read about Fu Li going about life like a rich young master, saving people and throwing about precious ingredients and money like it's candy.
Great job by the translator, especially since they have included pictures and explanations about many yao in-text, along with lots of descriptions for internet slang-culture of China.
Oh my GODDD this was SO GOOD and SO WARM I'm in tears I love this story so much!!!
I don't think there's a single book by Yue Xia Die Ying that I haven't enjoyed but so far, this is definitely my favourite and waiting for it to be translated fully was definitely worth it because I would have hated to MTL this, it's just too lovely.
All the characters are so wonderful--not just Fu Li and Zhuang Qing--but all the supporting characters, all the people who showed up just for a little while. Maybe not the two-bit villains who showed up at the end but everyone else was brilliant and I loved how everything eventually ended up being connected and things and people that you might've thought didn't matter did end up being pretty important.
For the most part, this was a super fluffy, really heartwarming read, but good god when the angst hit, it hit HARD. If it weren't for those extras (that really should've been part of the main story) I would've bawled my eyes out. As it was, I was really teary and also I was reeling a fair bit because I didn't expect that level of heartbreak from a book that basically had no conflict before that but the payoff was worth it and the babies are adorable and happy together and I do wish we'd gotten even more extras with the other Elders and more happy married life shenanigans but I'm still really happy with this book. I'm sure I'm going to be thinking about this for days.
(Not really related, but the dopey smile on my face every time Fu Li called him Zhuang little dragon ;-;)
A simple and cute story about yao and human cultivators living peacefully together in peace in the modern world. I've seen this title come up a couple times on rec lists and finally gave into my curiosity to try it out. Even though it's set in a world with rich Chinese folk culture elements, I would classify it more as slice of life with some fantasy thrown in. For the most part, it was quite slow-paced and I could only read a couple chapters at a time before I switched to doing something else.
The MC is Fu Li, an innocent yao who woke up from a long nap in the mountains and wandered down to the human world. His goal is to pass the college entrance exams, so that he can attend college and become a civil servant that contributes back to society. He initially starts working some odd jobs, but eventually ends up in the cultivator's management bureau, a secret government department that governs yao behavior and how they're integrated in the modern world alongside humans. The head of the management bureau is our ML, Zhuang Qing, who is a stingy and aloof half-human, half-dragon.
The story, especially after FL joins the management bureau, felt a bit monster-of-the-week. Something happens in the cultivation world, and ZQ and FL go to investigate and take care of the issue. Sometimes the perpetrator becomes a good guy and joins their bureau, but others are evil fiends that have no hope of redemption and are quickly killed. Either way, it felt quite formulaic and I found myself getting bored.
There's a little bit of an underlying plot about FL's true identity and what happened in his past with his pet human and his many uncles and aunts on Reflecting Mist Mountain, but overall it's a very simple and straightforward story. I prefer plot-heavy books, so I usually stay away from this kind of slow slice-of-life story.
Another reason why I found my attention wandering with the book is because of the slow romance build up. Since the story was already slow-paced, I wanted to read about an exciting romance, but that wasn't the case at all. It was a very gradual progression from strangers to coworkers to trusted friends and finally lovers, and when it finally happened there wasn't a big deal made out of it.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
I'll include some random thoughts I had as I was reading the story:
Zhuang Qing has so many double standards; he says street stalls are unsanitary but also finished off a ton of crawfish by himself XP
ZQ's personality lives up to the exception of being the 1 stingiest dragon out of 10, so it was hilarious to read his initial impressions on FL casually giving him expensive gemstones and pills left and right like they're worth nothing
FL treating ZQ as a yao youngster and being overly protective of him because he hadn't reached dragon adulthood yet was so cute. For example: "Every person has a responsibility to care for minors," Fu Li patted Zhuang Qing on the shoulder. "Little children shouldn't interrupt when grownups do things."
There were so many touching moments when FL stood up for ZQ and made him feel like someone cared about him, such as when FL snuck into the azure dragon palace and stole back ZQ's jade pendant, left to him by his mom
I wasn't expecting of FL's elders to still be alive. I was shocked when the first elder, Sister Pheasant, showed up, but after that, they all started appearing one by one
The way ZQ wants to show off his relationship to the public was so funny, like when he dragged FL to a charity gala he normally never attends so that they can be seen together and photographed in public XP
FL's identity kept changing. First we thought he was just a rabbit yao (though it was obvious that's not all he was), then he passed his 9 hearts tribulation to become a hou. Finally it was revealed that he was the yao emperor that had been rumored to make an appearance since the beginning of the book. I wasn't surprised by this reveal at all, since I had already guessed that might be the case. I just didn't expect the yao emperor to be an evil presence that was meant to eradicate humans from the world
ZQ confessed in such an arrogant manner haha Seeing Fu Li's stupefied look, Zhuang Qing pursed the corners of his mouth. "I thought about it carefully. Other than me, no one else of age in the yao world is worthy of being with you."
It was so funny how everyone else, even their subordinates and the older and powerful yao, assumed they were together before they actually got together
FL and his love of soliciting love advice anonymously through online forums XP
My favorite side character might be the crested ibis. He was initially super annoying, but he later grew on me via his online comments about the arrogant CEO and little assistant CP
This was such a heartwarming story. I loved the characters, the twists and turns, and the wealth flaunting in this story was much more acceptable than in some of the other novels I read. The cluelessness - style of wealth flaunting came across as extremely adorable.
The key lesson in this story - the need to live with respect towards the earth - is amazing. I think the author did a great job combining that lesson with the belief in cyclical dynasties. No matter how impressive or ancient a dynasty is, if they ignore others and act with impunity, they'll meet their downfall as another takes its place.
Another theme I liked in this story is the ability to fight destiny. Even if it is a ford's destiny to wreak havoc and meet destruction, they can fight that destiny and find a path of survival. It's so appropriate given the state of the environment. Even though a large number of people want to hide and pretend the earth can continue to be used and polluted as it always has been, the fact that a large number of people are fighting the seemingly inevitable destruction is hope for the future. I'm personally the type that would give up and die when things look bleak, but these types of hopeful stories are needed to remind us that a sliver of a chance is still a chance. And fighting furiously for that chance can very well manifest it into reality. Somehow, this sweet story touches on everything miserable but ends in hope. It acknowledges what a mess humans have made of the world, but also the beauty they've created. It shows the power of trying with all your might to fight for a future and for love. And it shows how random kindness can bring about surprising rewards.
THIS BOOK DESERVES ALL THE FIVE STARS IT RECEIVED!!!!!
I don’t know where to start/how to describe my feelings while reading this book. MC is just… kind, innocent, cute and hardworking. He has one goal, and he accomplished it. And ML, his character development, is interesting and heartwarming. The plot is flowing nicely, and the angst isn’t much. The cuteness and fondness are overloaded. I have never read any books that make me feel joy and sorrow as well as understanding all in one go. All the characters are amazing. Though, MC and ML are really fated lover. I wish them a million more years of happiness. 4.9/5 ⭐️

I cried so much at the extra; where ZQ hugged his phone after hearing FL’s voice, crying himself and losing himself at that moment. Also, I wish we could wittiness FL reunited with his White tiger and Tortoise Elders. Ahhh overall, FL and ZQ love is amazing. I love them .

Truly charming, action, fun -- definitely 5 points.
Only the birth and the progress of the romance is a little clunky - the "Rabbit" is clueless, he must be nudged into "understanding" of the other's feelings for him (Rabbit, think about this: if a person X does this and that, what do you think his feelings for a person Y are ? .. Well, he likes him! ...Aaaa, so it means that the Dragon likes me? now, when I come to think of it, I do the same for the Dragon that he does for me ... Aaaa, so that means that I like him too!..
So all in all, I still give 5 stars, because the romance is really not important in the overall scheme of things.
4.4! Muy lindoooo! Tan precioso Fu Li! Y qué majestuoso dragón dorado! Ay!
An absolutely lovely and heartwarming story; just like drinking a cup of hot milk on a cold night. Beneath the simplicity lies a profound story. Although it’s light and simple, it isn’t boring. In fact, it’s quite meaningful and touching.
A very comfortable read, a balm for the soul. Wish authors of this caliber; capable of writing in the simplest way without all the bells and whistles while delivering the warmest and heartfelt story were more appreciated.
ahh i had this on my to-read list for a good while since the premise didn't really interest me that much. but i left it on since the NU overall rating was high (4.7). this was a pleasant surprise and i really enjoyed it. the world building is very nice, too! love reading all about the different kinds of yao beasts, etc.
This was a gem! The story, the comedy, the sweet couple, the side characters were all perfect. A must-read! It’s something new definitely. The plot isn’t as common as all the other novels I’ve read. Quite a breathe of fresh air after reading several novels with more or less similar plots. Another new fave ❤️
5 stars so so good! Mostly fluff till the end where it becomes angst but with a good ending! I cried so much at the end. Super cute and sweet story, no smut, only very brief descriptions. Love the humour as well
