Living in remote Warwickshire, Portia Easton holds little hope for marrying anyone other than an obscure country gentleman, until Marc Hamilton, the Duke of Castleton, proposes marriage, but Portia begins to question her new suitor's motives. Original.
This was a pretty good book but I had to drop it a star because of the way the hero "protected" the heroine from danger. He treated her like crap and acted as if he cared nothing for her in order to protect her from the man who is trying to ruin his life by destroying those he loved. It just drove me crazy the way he wouldn't tell her she was in danger so of course, she put herself in harms way, as she had no knowledge of said danger. It just grated me.
I was glad that the heroine didn't go all forgiving with the hero when she learned the truth. I would have been quite upset. In fact, she was quite hurt that he didn't trust her to tell her the truth. It was all quite annoying. This is why the hero is on my "hero needs a slap upside the heard" shelf. He should never have listened to the heroine's aunt.
Having said all that though, the cruelty and harshness added that angsty goodness! :)
I've read Marlene Suson's historicals before and have enjoyed her writing. I was pleased to discover her regency books. I'm not much into reading these regency books but I like Marlene Suson. Since I don't read them is it normal that they never show the love scenes? It was all very closed door. However, despite that, the story was still quite enjoyable.
One of my problems, however, was the issue with the Duke's sister-in-law was never resolved. The Duke wanted nothing to do with her because he believed she was responsible for his brother's death when in fact she had nothing to do with it. Even after it was learned that the duel was all a setup to kill his brother to cause the Duke pain, there was no scene to show or even tell that the Duke welcome the SIL back into the family. I was quite disappointed about that.
Still a good book and a fast read.
