Andrew Vachss
138 books892 followersAndrew Vachss has been a federal investigator in sexually transmitted diseases, a social-services caseworker, a labor organizer, and has directed a maximum-security prison for “aggressive-violent” youth. Now a lawyer in private practice, he represents children and youths exclusively. He is the author of numerous novels, including the Burke series, two collections of short stories, and a wide variety of other material including song lyrics, graphic novels, essays, and a “children’s book for adults.” His books have been translated into twenty languages, and his work has appeared in Parade, Antaeus, Esquire, Playboy, the New York Times, and many other forums. A native New Yorker, he now divides his time between the city of his birth and the Pacific Northwest.

Our unnamed protagonist works as an untraceable assassin. Who his targets are and how they are chosen is part of the point of the book. What's pertinent to this review is that he's part of a line of similar assassins, all chosen by their predecessors to carry on the work. But our protagonist's chosen successor, Sonny, seems to have talents that lie along a different path. And, when a classmate of his disappears, events unfold that may spell the end of the line in more ways than one.
Sadly, this may be the last new Andrew Vachss novel we see as the author passed away this past November. Blood Line is a fitting novel to go out on, with Vachss' signature razor sharp prose in fine format. His familiar themes of family and protection of children are ever present as always.
This is a standalone novel, and a fine introduction to Vachss' work. His prose is addictive, and his books deserving of a wider readership. Definitely recommended!

The usual Vachss themes - children and the people (usually men) who do them harm. This time from the perspective of a man who is part of a line of people, on the wrong side of the law, who rescue a child and continue the line. A worthy last book, if that’s what it is, given his recent passing. His books were often unsettling, but they most definitely raised awareness of some of the awful things that happen in the shadows. May he Rest In Peace.

RIP Andrew Vachss. My plan is to read/reread one Vachss book per month this year. I reread “A Bomb Built in Hell” in January. Blood Line is posthumous published one month after his passing. A great and welcome surprise to get one more book. I enjoyed it very much. The main character is a quiet reserved man without the usual Vachss rage. He knows he is dealing with evil but doesn’t want to know the exact details. He is a weapon pointed at his target by a trusted middleman. He’s doing his job of eliminating one monster at a time. “I gave little thought to what might have been going on behind all those doors…I let all that pass right on through my mind without sticking….” On a personal note, reading Vachss helped me deal with my own damage like no one else could. He gave me strength.

I liked it, but didn't love it. Strong character but I wanted more grittiness, (see: the Burke novels, That's How I Roll or Two Trains Running). Still, a welcome addition to my collection. RIP Mr. Vachss. Glad you had one more bullet in the chamber.

Was kind of disappointed that this book wasn't on the same level as some of his previous books, this was more like a tutorial. Rest In Peace Mr. Vachss, you was truly a great author!

His father taught him, now it was time for his son, but he knew Sonny was different!
The line was to be carried on from father to son, and when he knew it was time, he acquired a son also so that the line would continue. But with Sonny, he knew that he would not be able to be a killer like he had been. He would have to find something else for his place in the line. When Sonny was nine, he asked him what he wanted for his birthday. Sonny said that he wanted a computer, and he picked it out. He was smart and could look up all kinds of things.
When one of Sonny’s classmates went missing, and her mother came by to see if they could help find her, he realized as they talked that he might have found Sonny’s place. Now the story begins.
Join Sonny and his father as they track the missing girl, and Sonny finds his niche…
What did I like? This storyline is more profound than just a story about a missing girl; it’s about internet predators and what is to be done about them. It goes deeper yet about how some are protected and the “Blood Line” that does the work! This storyline captured me in the first couple of pages; I became so captivated I could not lay it down.
What will you like? Philosophical, thought-provoking, stimulating, fascinating, and motivational! How many children are stolen and sold worldwide, and what is being done about it. We know that lawmakers have not even touched the surface of the millions involved. I hope this isn't the final Vachss book. I hope there are more manuscripts waiting for publication. But if it is the last one, then it's a good one to go out on. This is possibly my favorite of his work in a long time. A line of assassins going back who knows how far, each taking a child from Them for Us, training the child to be an assassin until it's the kid's turn to raise a child and to subsequently retire. The narrator's son tries to solve the mystery of the disappearance of a local teenager, and the narrator steps in to help in the best way he knows how, even though he's retired and not getting paid for the job. I really like the interaction between these two and how they view the world. It could have been a great first book in a series. Too bad we're unlikely to meet this duo again.

I will miss his stories very much.
When I read the precis of the book, I thought it continued the character from Down In The Zero. It doesn't, but it's still great. Even more so as perhaps Vachss' last book, unless there's still ones to be published after his passing. Thanks for the hours of entertainment.

The first posthumous novel by Andrew Vachss—Blood Line, features as its protagonist, an unnamed retired hitman, part of a tribe of outlaws, former black market babies, raised with a code of honor. Along with his adopted teenage son, Sonny, he investigates the disappearance of a middle school girl who ran off with a man she met on the Internet, the victim of a human trafficking scheme.

Vachss is an author who writes about young people who are abused, lost, taken, sold, etc. His books are so real, so truthful that he has a select audience of readers that see the dirty, nasty underbelly of the world and its plethora of sinister people who he goes after.

Hard, with an Edge
Not like any of Andrew Vachss' other stories, except that it is. Mysterious protagonist, real issues, redefining family, underlying darkness, tension, and heart. Andrew, you are missed, my brother.

a man of good conscience
Always liked this author but I didn’t realize how prolific he was. I think this is his final novel. It was good to see he maintained his interest in the lost and vulnerable.

I liked this! It was a bit slow, and didn't have the personal connection to the characters that I would have liked, but the plot was interesting and it was well-written.

Another Excellent Andrew Vachss novel
This is a new stand alone novel in a familiar vein for Vachss novels. I truly enjoyed reading it. Our hero moves from the streets of NYC to suburbia but still fighting for women and children. This time moving into the 21st century with the aid of computers, the internet and a very skilled young man. For all Vachss fans.
