Each book is reviewed for accuracy by a historical expert. When fourteen-year-old Lucy Scott has to leave her Missouri home to follow her family to California, she feels all her hopes for the future slipping away. But when she meets a pair of handsome twins in her wagon train, she learns to cope with life on the trail. And as they journey west, she discovers that part of growing up is about finding a world larger than she could have ever imagined.
Lynn Glaze earned a master's degree from Stanford University and is a fourth-generation Californian who has been a teacher and development director. She is the author of Seasons of the Trail . Lynn and her husband, Harry, live in Wilmington, Delaware, and have two adult children.
Hard life for pioneer wagons going west shows how wimpy we have become in today's desire for comfort at all costs. This author gave the main character a preoccupation for "boys", but had a good lesson in that department.
A really, really good book for a reluctant/lower-level middle school reader--besides the information about the Oregon Trail, the plot is suitable for a sixth- or seventh-grader. It's relatively short with large font, too, which won't scare away kids who don't like reading.
