*4.5* Very dark beginning, reminiscence of war of the worlds. Aliens invade and consume everything in their path, literally.
I inhaled this story and why was it so short?! (it was 300 pages, but still) This book easily could’ve been another 200 pages with deeper world building and greater character depth. But I like those chonky and loooong sci-fi stories like Gann.
For once, humanity had a common enemy and all other human problems seemed minuscule in comparison.

Well, this was a pleasant surprise I enjoyed it a lot. Overall It had a very war of the worlds vibe in fact yes that is the one thing that stood out majorly to me and definitely my favourite part of this.
Earth has been invaded by a parasitic race of aliens the Gryken they are decimating the whole landscape stripping it of all its natural resources laying waste and annihilating all of humankind before they move on to the next planet and then rinse repeat. This is how Adira finds herself captured as a breeder and placed within a Scrit pod which is like a mechanical vessel that roams the earth harvesting humans and resources.
This Scrit and Gryken definitely put me in the mind of war of the worlds. Adira's fate now is to be implanted with an alien offspring and to eventually die as it turns on her when it’s eventually brought forth fully formed. Also within this pod are two other humans Sam and Mina and with her fate now seemingly sealed Adira is swiftly losing hope. Until that is the Scrit is attacked and destroyed by unknown assailants now free Adira is dismayed and terrified when their liberators turn out to be another race of aliens and she has no idea if they are friendly or hostile.
Fer’ro is Vellan their planet Edooria was invaded and destroyed by this scourge and they are here now on earth to destroy the Gryken. I definitely loved how alien the Vellan are: they are somewhat humanoid in their build but that is where all similarities end. They are a predatory reptile-like race and have a symbiotic ba’clan attached to their skin that they can withdraw and use at will. They are much larger than humans and speak in clicks and growls and with their heightened senses they are prone to acting on their animalistic instincts and their sense of smell is most definitely superior.
This was a slow-burn across the species romance it’s the first book in a planned series and it was done really well. I definitely felt the building bond and eventual chemistry between Adira and Fer’ro. It’s dual POV so you really get a sense of all the internal confusion and building tension they are both experiencing.
This was imaginative and well written and easily snagged my attention. There was action danger heat and a sweet but totally possessive romance at its centre. I’m incredibly excited to see where this series goes next and I’m for sure going to be reading the next one in the series. This type of romance genre can feel very samey and repetitive this one definitely stood out from the crowd and is definitely one of the better ones out there.

Pretty solid start to a series I must say. I had high expectations, especially for the world building and I was not disappointed on that front.
We begin the story with Adira, a young veterinarian who's doing her little jog of the day before having to go to work...When suddenly there seem to be shooting stars falling from the sky. Only thing is that they aren't shooting stars but what looks like giant metal machines with many legs; the Scits. Adira ends up being captured by one of them. In the belly of a Scits, Adira has lost all hopes until a strange ship collides with the Scits and destroys it. She then meets Fer'ro, a Vullan, who came with his brethren to save what's left of Earth and humanity.
Overall, I think the characters were good but I had a little issue particularly with Adira. She was strong but a bit exasperating at times. There weren't many details about her other than she was trying to survive. She was certainly brave at times, but I wish there'd been a deeper side to her. I honestly didn't know what to think of her while reading, and I never really connected to her. As a result, I didn't really see the chemistry between her and Fer'ro.
As for Fer'ro, I liked him more than Adira. He felt nuanced. He was protective, possessive and even jealous sometimes. I liked that he was a bit mysterious too. His species, the Vullan, were very interesting in the way they were described. In my opinion, he was a little bit too respectful, but don't mind me, that's because I'm a sucker for dubcon. I just thought it might've made things more intense between them if he'd been more vigorous and straightforward in his pursuit of Adira. BUT, I guess being gentle and caring is also cool too.
Like I said, I didn't feel the chemistry much between them. The moments between Adira and Fer'ro were brief and appeared somewhat impersonal in my eyes. I didn't really see the attraction or the reason for the attraction. I just wished there'd been more forbidden desires, passion and longing. More of a buildup on that front. Near the end, when Adira gives in to Fer'ro, it didn't necessarily feel like a 180, but I wasn't totally convinced of their bond either.
Altogether, it was a good story that I read pretty quickly. I liked that I felt the threats of the alien invasion happening. I was actually worried for the characters that were captive and felt sad and even horrified at what was happening in the belly of the Scits, controlled by the Grykens. I honestly hadn't read an alien invasion story in a while, especially one that made me feel all sorts of emotions right from the beginning. So that's an A+ for the worldbuilding. Now I just wished the relationship between the main characters had been deeper.

Even with the decent narrators, I can't hang with this author's writing style. This is a contemporary dystopian sci fi, but it's written a bit like a historical. So, to me, it comes off as pretentious. See the highlighted examples.

Arrival had me on the edge for most of the book with an excellently tense sci-fi plot that still focused on the romance between a human and an alien. There are dark themes in this book and some parts were hard to read since Earth has been invaded by a species of alien that uses and destroys. BUT thankfully, another alien species also comes to Earth whose mission is to stop the initial invaders, who also destroyed the good aliens' planet.
This is a first person, dual POV book. Adira is the FMC and starts the book as a victim of the invading aliens, but goes through some amazing growth throughout to fight back. Fer'ro is the hero who is drawn to Adira following her rescue, but has to show that his group are not the enemies too. There's a language barrier at first, cultural misunderstandings, alien anatomy, and survival challenges all happening at the same time as these two main characters slowly build trust and a relationship. The Vullans (the good aliens) are all respectful and protective of the females, but Fer'ro is possessive of Adira as well. This is also a slow burn for steaminess, but they definitely get there.
I enjoyed Arrival a lot. I've read another of AG Wilde's sci-fi romances that was lighter with a lot of humor and while this one was very different from that, I was equally invested in the characters' story. The chemistry and relationship development was so well done in my opinion. Arrival ends in a happy for now, with the characters committed to each other, but more of the overall story of what's happening on Earth to come in the series. I'm excited to read more in the series and see others get their HEAs in the midst of the fight for Earth.

3.5☆ War of the Parasitic Host Worlds features super evil octopuses, sentient probiotic wetsuits, and ridged everything.
This was suspenseful, funny, sweet, and pretty entertaining. It dragged in some places and there were some typos, but I still flew through it today and it successfully transported me to another galaxy and a half. 🚀 I liked both leads; strong, smart heroine, devoted, honorable hero. I didn’t fall in love with them like I did in The Outlaw, though. At first I was put off by what I kept thinking of as his sentient probiotic wetsuit, but once it became a couples thing and the heroine got to enjoy the benefits, I started to like the whole symbiotic thing. Like instead of a therapy dog, they get a Smart Swaddle Wetsuit that protects them and wants to help them while looking like erasable body paint?
Yeah, the aliens were verrrry alien, both the good guys and the bad guys.👽👾 Made it slightly less sexy and there were a couple things I had to push my imagination to envision, but I enjoyed all the fumbling to understand each other and meet each others' total weirdness halfway. Like the crunchy live spaghetti worms and him watching her “kill her dinner twice” by cooking it over a campfire. 🤣 The cute romance was gradual and woven in well with the overall plot to take the planet back from the parasitic bastards who are their common enemy. Hmm, this one was a weird one for me. On one hand it had decent world building. The author did a okay job of setting the scene and explaining what we needed to know right from the jump. The pacing was alright too.
But.. I didn't really like it? More to the point I didn't enjoy it. It was intriguing for the first half but by the second half I felt it dragged a bit and began skimming.
Part of that might have to do with not connecting with the FMC Adira. She read a little flat for me. She didn't have much in the way of personality either.
Though I did find the MMC Fer'ro fascinating. He had a few charming moments. And then learning all about his alien race was also interesting. Truthfully though with how the author described how his kind looked, all I kept imagining was the creature dude from Venom 😂
I did find the setup of the second half of the story troubling. Adira is rescued by the Vullan (Fer'ros people) along side two other women, Sam and Mina. Considering what happened to Mina and how she was being healed once they were rescued.. her absence made more sense. But it doesn't make any sense to me why or how Adira could allow herself to remain separated from the other woman Sam. I just don't get it. Story wise it makes more sense for them to cling to one another as they face yet another unknown fate together. This is the usual path in similar books and tbh there's a reason for it. It didn't serve the story at all to have no more interactions with Sam until a brief appearance in the epilogue. None at all. We're left clueless as to how Sam is doing, how she is acclimating, which alien dude is watching over her. Nada. It made no sense considering Sam seemed more afraid of the aliens than Adira and looked to her for guidance. So it definitely left alot to be desired with how Adira goes through so much change in such a small amount of time and yet miraculously does so all by herself without the support of the women she bonded with in captivity. I just couldn't picture neither woman being okay with being separated or not fighting or arguing to be with the other or demanding how they are or to get to see or speak with them to be sure.
Sure, I know I am comparing this particular issue with other stories. Point is, these first books in a series, especially ones of a similar trope/plot as this one tend to put alot of importance on the first female to mate or become friendly with the new aliens. She essentially becomes the ambassador for her people or at the very least a quasi leader to her rag tag group. The one everyone looks to because they trust her instincts and intelligence. But this particular story didn't bring that sort of vibe in any capacity for me. Even if it had, there is no way I could have believed in Adira as some fearless leader or as a strong female willing to fight for her people.
Lastly, I gotta say it read across sort of lifeless and even boring at times. I didn't feel any real emotional response to reading any of the intense scenes or the characters emotional reactions. Maybe it had to do with the author's writing style. Who knows.

What a great start to a new series. I found AG Wilde quite by accident, but I really do love her stories. They are well written, and really do drag you in. She also creates great characters, and I’ve found I cannot put her books down until I’ve finished them. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

Darker themes than many of the alien books I’ve read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ll absolutely be continuing the series.

This is my first sci-fi romance set on a dystopian earth, and I ... really liked it. This is definitely a setting that I will be looking for more of. Thank you to Storygraph reading challenges that expose me to settings, tropes, subgenres that I normally would not have been exposed to!

Quick(ish) Review
Imagine the world as you know it goes straight to hell aaaaand then Venom shows up (minus the sense of humor), he’s a good guy, and you fall in love. That’s this book and I’m not mad at it. Definitely dark and violent, but the romance still worked and that’s what matters. I’ll read the next one.

what can I say…it started off ok,but I got bored…it was a very slow burn story and the romance between Adira and Fer’ro didn’t really happen till nearly the end of the novel…this was too boring for me 😴(I won’t be reading anymore in this series) 😴🥱😴

This one hooked me immediately. It’s not reinventing sci-fi romance, but it feels more intense and grounded than most. The opening is super dark, Earth’s basically doomed, humans are being captured as breeders (yeah… it’s bleak), and you’re just wondering how Adira is getting out alive.
Then the alien shows up, and honestly? Total Venom vibes...but make it romantic. Black symbiote-style armor, sharp teeth, long tongue…😋 but thankfully less horrifying. The dynamic between Adira and Fer’ro is what really sells it though, there’s a real barrier between them, and their interactions feel earned instead of rushed( considering this is a fairly short story)
It’s more story-driven than your typical alien romance, which I loved. The slow build makes the steamy moments hit better without taking over the plot. Also sets up a bigger conflict with “good” vs. destructive aliens, and I’m definitely curious where it goes next.

Then the alien shows up, and honestly? Total Venom vibes...but make it romantic. Black symbiote-style armor, sharp teeth, long tongue…😋 but thankfully less horrifying. The dynamic between Adira and Fer’ro is what really sells it though, there’s a real barrier between them, and their interactions feel earned instead of rushed( considering this is a fairly short story)
It’s more story-driven than your typical alien romance, which I loved. The slow build makes the steamy moments hit better without taking over the plot. Also sets up a bigger conflict with “good” vs. destructive aliens, and I’m definitely curious where it goes next.

This book had everything I need in a dark sci-fi alien romance. It‘s one of the best I‘ve ever read! The plot is dark and creepy but I really enjoyed it. The smut is chefs kiss and these aliens are hot af. I could easily dive into this story and I had so much fun while reading it. I like these dark stories where the earth is captured and our characters need to fight to survive. A nice add on are these fierce and protective alien warriors. I read this book in one sitting and it was a quick read.
Adira and Fer‘ro are a badass couple. He‘s the leader of the warriors and she‘s a fierce human woman. Their tension was high and I adored them together. Their relationship is build up well and it‘s the perfect pace for a slow burn.
Overall this was an amazing book!

5 stars! I could not put this book down. And proceeded to binge-read the other books in the series the moment they were released. I will say, this is my favorite book in the series, but the whole series’ is epic and has a fantastic story arc. It’s dark, it’s gritty, it doesn’t shy away from the brutality of a post-apocalyptic world—especially as the bad invading aliens are truly something out of my worst nightmare. And the romance and hilarity of the Vullan and humans learning each others’ cultural quirks had me laugh out loud at times.

I just found this author and I am so very happy that I did! I love this story so much! It pulled me in and kept me captivated and I was sad that it came to an end...til the next in the series!
This hero is an alien that looks like an alien. This love story is so touching and so sweet and so sexy! He had to learn how to communicate with the heroine. Someone who is totally alien to him.
In a time when the earth is being attacked and possibly destroyed this heroine was brave enough to reach out and take what joy and love that came to her. Surrounded by danger, death, and despair she finds a reason to hope.
The bad alien's are really nasty and bad. I must have my HEA ....hoping that in the end, at the end of this series, they are totally destroyed.
I will be reading this series and probably other books by this author. This book was a very nice surprise and I enjoyed it very much.

Interesting setup, but it has that "first book syndrome" where a bunch of time is spent establishing everything instead of making the characters more interesting. It's a short book, so I don't see why there couldn't have been a few extra chapters with the humans interacting with each other more.
I have plenty of questions about the evil aliens and how/why they came to be. Maybe that will be explained in later books, but hopefully more time will be spent on the main characters too!
Also, I'm pretty sure the main aliens don't look like the generic bodybuilder on the cover. They are described as lizard-like with a bunch of ridges, covered in a vantablack nano suit. Lately I have been trying to avoid sfr books with shirtlesshumans "aliens" on the cover, because they are usually non-con romances explained away with it being the "alien's" "culture." I'm glad I gave Arrival a chance anyways, even though this first book was kind of a dud. I see so much potential though, so I'll probably continue the series!

I am giving 3 stars strictly for the beginning of the book.
Other than that, meh. These "badass" aliens were actually just a bunch of pansies. I like my aliens like I like my pirates...mean, nasty and alpha. These guys were WAAAAAAAAAAAY too in touch with their feelings and I just wanted someone to chop off some heads or disembowel someone, then have nasty alien sex with our heroine. Is that too much to ask for? I really need to stop comparing alien/human romances to The Last Hour of Gann because ain't nothin' comin' close to that book!

This was really good.
All the danger and alien things were terrifying and fascinating.
I really liked these characters, and how they grew together.
And the sex. Hot damn, the sex was hot.
The main war that started in this book isn’t over, obviously.
But they won a few battles and Adira and Fer’ro’s relationship really bloomed.
It was engrossing to read.
I might even have to read the next book.
I want to know about his brother, or ‘womb mate’ as he calls him, and the author thee humans they rescued.
So glad I picked this up.
It was exactly what I wanted it to be.

August 31, 2022DNF at 5%. Why is every single sentence a new paragraph??? I cannot focus on anything else. I scrolled a little further into the book to see if it got better but it didn’t. There is a paragraph break every sentence or 2. Having a full length paragraph would not hurt you. I’d even take the 3-5 sentence paragraphs we’re taught in elementary school.

I'd say this was a three and a-half star read.
The beginning was pretty gritty. It had heavy War of the World's vibes that kept me glued to the book from beginning to end.
I think the interpersonal relationships were lacking, and that's what dropped a star 🌟 (for me). The characters were raw and interesting, but the dynamic between the women, and then the mc and her hero were lacking. I guess what sorta... disappointed(?) me was that I wanted more. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Being a writer myself, I know how hard it is to get the full dimension of your characters out of your head and onto the pages, so I'm not complaining, it's just what kept me from really connecting with Adira and Ferro.
Minor annoyance - when I started sending my manuscript out to beta readers, one in particular pointed out that I used the word "for" too much. (Ie. For he loved the sun so much...) I didn't really notice it myself until I opened my book in an e-reader, listened to it out loud... and man, it did not sound right! I blame that beta for me noticing the word "for" in other books now. 😮💨 It pulls me out of scenes and causes me to go back and reread things that are perfectly fine. (Anyone else have this issue?)
The instalove, fated mates, theme is one I adore and find really fun! But the lack of relationship building gets a little sad when you REALLY want to see the characters bond.
So - if Arrival had a few little tweaks (and a couple extra chapters) I think it easily could have made it onto my favorites list. It was an immersive, fast read with just the right amount peril to keep you turning pages long after bedtime! I recommend it for all my friends who love scifi romance, sweet alien heroes, and feisty women who don't mind being sassed by their men.

2.5 rounded up. I always enjoy purring and clicking alien, they were like soldiers and at the same time kind and caring to the rescued females (and truly alien). Their 'suit' was also fascinating. My main problem was, everything felt rushed and I didn't catch any emotions like true fear, desperation,... It was like reading a book (I know it is) and I want to immerse myself. Sadly this book wasn't able to deliver what I hoped for.
