HOLY SHIT THIS WAS SO GOOD.
There is one aspect of the plot that bothers me and it's that there are a few too many coincidences for my taste, but thats small beans compared to all the awesome stuff this book does. The Barleycorn family is one I'll hardly forget. Truly the punk mystery of the ages. Thanatos and Eros are brethren.

What an interesting novel. It's literally a trip of a young man returning to his American family- their history, the history of the land, the history of the family business of death, the exploration of death and the start of the dead coming back to life.

As you get to the mid-point of the book, we watch through "Grin's" eyes the family squabbles coming to a peak and ultimately the first "murder." At this point the search for the murderer, figuring out who is dead and who is alive and who is the living dead and what is going on becomes that main focus!? Grin is able to get to the bottom of it- but it is certainly not easy.

This story has both thoughtful passages as well as incredibly funny moments. This is neither a standard murder mystery nor novel only about death. It really combines so many elements that it is a unique work in itself. It's not a story you can speed read through, I found it was nice to stop at points and think about what was going on before continuing. Once you get to the half point though the pace picks up and all the elements of the first half prepare you for what is discovered for the second. Bittersweet ending.

I don't know why this book has so few reviews! It combines philosophical discussion of death with zombies and impossible crimes. The writing is a little weirdly phrased at times, which might just be from the translation. Other than that, I would recommend it to mystery readers looking for something a little different.

Một câu chuyện kỳ lạ về việc các xác chết sống dậy, chèn vào đó là thông tin về các hiện tượng văn hoá đại chúng ở Mỹ, cách miêu tả trào lộng và cường điệu, lẽ ra tác phẩm sẽ càng thú vị hơn nếu được dẫn dắt tình tình tiết hay hơn, nếu các nhân vật được xây dựng rõ nét hơn, và nếu văn phong cô đọng hơn. Đọc cả quyển mà mình vẫn không hình dung ra tính cách của hầu hết nhân vật chính, và miêu tả khá dài dòng làm giảm hiệu ứng bất ngờ lẫn hài hước. Nhìn chung là truyện có ý tưởng và phần nào diễn đạt được, nhưng với mình, đây không phải là một tác phẩm thật sự lôi cuốn và làm tới được. Mình chấm 3,3/5.

Đây là một cuốn truyện khá kỳ lạ:

- Tác giả là người Nhật nhưng lại kể về bối cảnh nước Mỹ, nhân vật chính là người Mỹ lai Nhật.
- Những xác chết trong truyện sống lại nhưng không hề có lời giải thích, cũng không cắn người như zombie trong phim mà lại còn góp phần tạo nên các tình tiết về sau.

Về nội dung:

- Cách dẫn dắt của tác giả tương đối dễ hiểu, không có gì khó nắm bắt.
- Chất trinh thám nhẹ, mọi sự việc được giải thích đơn giản, hợp lý.
- Có vẻ tác giả là người rất am hiểu phong tục tập quán trong tang lễ của người Mỹ khi mô tả một cách rất kỹ và tường tận, giúp người đọc ở các quốc gia khác hiểu hơn về lí do tại sao người Mỹ lại làm việc này việc kia.
- Bối cảnh là một khu nghĩa trang nên luôn có cảm giác u ám, nặng nề.

Nếu bạn tìm kiếm một cuốn sách giật gân về những xác chết vừa là nạn nhân vừa là hung thủ, trong quá trình phá án thì máu me kinh dị đùng đoàng thì rất tiếc đây không phải là cuốn sách kiểu đó. Ngược lại nó khá là khô khan với những triết lý, kiến thức về sự sống và cái chết, những lý thuyết liên quan tới thần học, tâm lý học, khoa học là phần nhiều. Đến 4/5 tập 1 mới có một vụ mưu sát thực sự thì bạn hiểu rồi đấy (không tính nhân vật chính là anh chàng punk rock)

Tác phẩm trinh thám đặt vào một bối cảnh vừa ly kỳ vừa hài hước: các xác chết sống dậy (nhưng cũng chỉ tạm thời, vì sau một thời gian cơ thể rữa nát thì sẽ chết hẳn). Nhưng vì vậy mà các suy luận thông thường (như thời gian tử vong, ...) sẽ sai bét, và nhân vật chính phải suy luận trong tình huống mới.
