I've been holding off on rating this series because the last few books have been dragging and unnecessarily packed with needless filler and little plot progression. This book did not change my opinion. I don't get why authors needlessly milk a series rather than making 4 or 5 solid books. Sad to say I won't be reading any additional books by this author.
As much as I've grown to love this series and its slow-moving storyline this book was the shortest of all. The entire book takes place in a single day less than 24 hours and really not much happened. Simply Shade's introductory day to the white castle as a full-fledged Sabor and part of a pentad. Somehow she never even started classes nor got challenged in an arena fight like we would have expected.
The book is called Vexy and Chaos but seemed to focus more on Allure and Kitten's relationship, we already have a book named Kitten and Allure it's Chaos's turn! But Choas is dealing with the fallout from the memories dragged out of his subconscious during Lithiels torture session and seems to be focusing more on strengthening his brother's bonds with Shade instead of his own.
I enjoyed the book but it was too much filler with too little movement forward in the story. At this rate, this series will end up being 2o books long. I wonder how many the author actually plans for this series? I waited too long for the next book in Shadow and Shade to come out to only be given less than 24 hours with the characters I love! Hopefully, Part 2 of Vexy and Chaos speeds the timeline up whenever it comes out.
Shadows and Shade is one of my favorite series ever, and I've been looking forward for what feels like forever to get my hands on "Vexy and Chaos". Maybe it was the wait, the anticipation, or the fact I didn't do a reread of the previous book(s) but it took me a few chapters to really feel the story again. But then it clicked, and all my love for these characters flooded through me again as an unstoppable river making me solely focussed on reading, reading and more reading.
I absolutely adore Shade, but I seem to have developped a soft spot for all of her men as well. My heart broke for Seth multiple times while reading this book, but Roarke's place in the Pentad is just as important in this book. It feels like I'm finally starting to understand him better, making me connect more to him then before. The tension between these characters is high in this book, and I was starting to get just as frustrated as Shade with these men holding back and then... BAM! The scene between Shade and Pax; I'm still hot and flustered.
"Vexy and Chaos" is already the seventh book in this series, and it's just as good as the previous ones. I picked out so many favorite quotes they are almost a book on their own and I can't wait for the next part.
Not gonna lie, Vexy & Chaos was a struggle for me. 44% in I was seriously considering DNFing, but I didn't! I stayed and I finished the book and barely nothing happened. I'm disappointed. I'm frustrated. We're 7 books into this series and I just feel like so much more should be happening at this point. I honestly don't know if I'll buy Vexy & Chaos P2, I still haven't decided. I might just wait until the whole series is completed before buying anymore of the books.
If taken individually, every book in the series so far has been about the same quality, which is a good, perhaps, average quality. The fmc is fun and interesting, and I love Seth's "chaos" ability. The antagonists are easy to hate, lol. As a whole series, I feel like the pacing is too drawn out. Don't get me wrong, I love slow burn; almost exclusively read slow burn, but I tend to burn out around book 7 or 8 of a series. The parts of the story that is doing the drawing out isn't as overt as I've read in other books, so it's a bit harder for me to pin down. Maybe it's in part due to the various POVs. The books I've read that I feel successfully use multiple POVs are one's like Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series. There are multiple main characters who have separate stories that eventually converge. Or books like Erica Woods' Feral Soul trilogy (it's lesser known, but I it's a favorite of mine) where the additional POVs are mostly centered on things involving the fmc and contributing to the main themes. The POV changes, most of the time, isn't making the book better. I could just be biased in thinking a POV change must necessarily be adding something more when compared to being written in the main POV. But really, idk if the way the POVs are used in this series is the issue. Basically, I felt at times I could skip a few pages or even a chapter and not miss anything vital or miss something that I wanted to read. Also, the naming of the books is weird. Like with this book, it didn't seem like it was about Seth. It's more like, Seth started to have some personal issues that weren't resolved by the end of the book and instead felt like everyone was just trying to ignore his turmoil. Anyways, that's my half-hearted review. ✌️
Loved the latest installment to the Shadows and Shade universe. This book provides a lot of insight to the inner workings of Seth's *swoon* emotions. What a surprisingly complicated guy! I appreciate that Amanda wants her readers to know these characters as well as she does. I also know that she loves these characters so much that she doesn't want to miss any part of their lives, which for this style of story? I'm obsessed.
Another well-written, well-edited addition the the Shadows and Shade series.
You’re telling me I wasted my precious time in a series of 6 books that’s not even finished since October 2022?!!
Halfway through this book and I was DONE.
This long ass book was ONE day in the characters life and nothing important even happened.
The amount of words used in this book to convey so little was astounding, the amount of unnecessary inner monologue and information, the lack of any meaningful dialogue and just the whole book were so disappointing.
I cannot believe I pushed through with this series. 6 books in and there still wasn’t any bond with other MMC other than Pax, THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A RH!!! You’re really telling me after 6 books there was only one real relationship out of four MMC’s?!!
The plot was nonexistent, poof, zilch, zero, nada, it disappeared in the second book if I’m honest. The plot holes, tropes left unfinished and just the lack of anything coherent in the plot was obvious from the beginning, I was just blinding myself.
Any character development I thought was in any of the books was actually me just deluding myself into believing it.
Pax was a complete controlling asshole the 6 books, Killian main trait was to express in grunts and growls, both he and Roarke main issue were their fear for their power and Seth character “development” was giving him issues he didn’t have in the first two books.
Don’t even get me started with Shade, to begin with she is an immature, useless and a dumb character. Once again you’re telling me than in the 6 book she was the FMC she didn’t learn to wield a weapon, read, use her magic, her wolf nor anything remotely useful other than beat someone with an apple?!!
Not only was her character growth not existent but she whole heartedly believed she was and always would be a soot servant and if she cannot think of herself differently and stop belittling herself how do you expect others to do so??
What was the point of giving her a seed if she still was in a mortal body? Still with a mortal lifespan, a mortal healing and a mortal weak body, she was better off as a spot servant.
Honestly, what was the point in her character, she may have put some things into motion but she has not contributed AT ALL in the plot.
Pushing through this series was a mistake I really really regret.
I am a big fan of this series and like the other previous books in the series, the relationships between the characters is definitely the highlight of the story. The plot is interesting and easy to follow, however i do agree with some of other reviews that Shade’s stubbornness is rather irritating at times. I understand her situation is frustrating but she is in a completely new world that she doesn’t fully understand (which she admits) yet seems to always argue against the advice of her pentand! My only other criticism is that i would like to see more progression in her relationships with some of her love interests. I do enjoy a slow burn romance but it would nice to see some more of those types of moments in the next book. Especially between Shade and Seth (whose character progression i am very much enjoying).
Still very much worth the read but i do hope that the next book is a bit more fast paced and we see some more passion and progression in the relationships between Shade and her love interests (Roarke and Seth especially).
I’ve been addicted to this series from the first teasers, before book one even released. I love Shade so much, being in her head is such a unique experience, the immediate commitment and protectiveness from the guys is a comfort blanket for me. This book is another masterpiece. I truly love this series more than I can express, and am excited for part two!
