When an EMP decimates the United States, Lori, a former Marine Raider, must embark on a treacherous journey with her daughter across the former United States from Pennsylvania to a rumored sanctuary in Washington State.
While I really enjoyed this story, it has its share of problems. The first and biggest being that there is no ending to it. The writer starts something between two women and then what, just leaves the audience hanging? We're barely started out on a road trip across the country and that's where we're left. Out in the cold. The author creates vivid characters and knows how to write action scenes mixed with emotion and feeling, but he needs to learn how to finish a story.
I love post=apocalyptic fiction, but this story was just meh. It did a good job of telling the story; going from one chapter which reflects on what happened in the past, to the next chapter filling in the current situation. But the characters and storyline were just missing compelling information. I prefer to hear about how the survivors are surviving and things like no mentioning of how they were purifying water just made the story less believable. I'll read book two and hope for more.
This book drove in the ditch in the last chapter. There was no ending and with that disaster the entire premise of the book was lost. The author started out well but burned it all out long before he just stopped writing. It was a waste of time.
Postapocalyptic Road Trips are a favorite genre of mine (hat tip to Cormack Mac Carthy). This one is remarkable in that it would reveal as female-sexist in a Bechdel Test, since all the main acting characters are women and the men don't have dialogues with each other. The author, Clay Wise is kind of a mystery to me, since I was unable to find any biographical data on them. I think we can safely ignore the multiple negative reviews of this book, since they all came out when the other three books in the series were not yet published.
I had to read and read and read and not put this novel down. Yes scary and unfortunately truly possible. Is there a sequel? This story is not over by a long shot. Did they ever make it to Seattle? Did they find the Science teacher in Ohio? What did they find in Ohio and or Seattle? Let me know what happens!
An author that knows how to spell! It is so distracting when you start with a new author and it's a challenge. The basis of this book is good in the respect that you actually like each of the characters. Looking forward another to reading more of your books.
I enjoyed the book for the most part. But…since I read on my iPad, I wasn’t paying attention to where I was in the book. It ended so abruptly, I was like what the &$#@??. As far as I know, there is no book 2.
1 of the things I like about these type Is that most of the time your average person thinks something like this can't happen could it, right? Hey,according to the Mayans, The world was supposed to end2022. We are still here I guess. So if something less catastrophic occurs, maybe a story like this can make people think. Interesting thanks Bill Hodges
In the new world you will do anything to stay alive. Author built these characters and "family" to keep this story moving and wanting me to know more about them. Read. In a day want more.
This is the first book of his I’ve read throughly enjoyed the storyline and characters. I will search for more of his books because I’m hoping the author continued to write about this some more. Highly recommend.
I wasn’t expecting to like this book, but I did. I don’t usually read first person books. This is quite a good storyline and the characters are pretty well thought out,
This is a very well done story about a group of survivors after a solar event takes out our civilisation. It starts with the day of the event and continues into the second year. The characters endure a lot and learn a lot. I look forward to the next one.
When this one starts out, I’m dropped into a post EMP-event world, so a fun, post-apoc setting, but it rotates in past tense so you can see a bit of what happened to the leads—I enjoyed this approach.
I found myself deeply immersed in this world and never wanted it to let me go. 4 stars
I liked the story and main characters but what I don’t like is there’s no ending. I checked out several of his books and none of them have endings! Definitely would not recommend any of his books (unless you don’t care if there’s no ending).
An interesting story with characters that are likable and entertaining. Well written and fun to read. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Standard EMP type story. Poor editing - character names - couple is talking to same man and they use different names. (Seen in other of the author's books)
