Too abstract and filled with unnecessary names. Also barely mentioned the war crimes which is problematic.

Read for a course. It is deceptively slim but is otherwise quite comprehensive in terms of coverage. Relatively conventional historiographical focuss compared to newer works by James McClain or Elise K Tipton, which have a more social focus.

One of the textbooks for the 2010 Reischauer Scholars Program. Very infomative. Quite enjoyable considering it's written in textbook format.
