This clear and authoritative book surveys the history of Japan from the mid 19th century up to the present day. It charts the spectacular rise of Japan, a society which leapt in little more than a generation from the feudal to early industrial forms of organisation - an exceptionally disturbing experience for the Japanese as they left behind the traditional and Asian and moved towards the modern and Western. It examines the turbulent 1930s and an empire won and lost between 1937 and 1945, and investigates the major changes after 1945 including the astonishing economic growth that has been achieved since the 1950s. This revised editon covers the economic recession and the dramatic political upheavals of the 1990s, taking the history of Japan up to the end of the 20th century.

اگر به دنبال کتابی هستید که با اون به شکلی روان با تاریخ ژاپن رو در رو بشید ، این کتاب انتخاب مناسبی نیست . ولی اگر به جزییات تخصصی تاریخ سیاسی ، اقتصادی و فرهنگی ژاپن علاقمند هستید کتابی کامل تر از این کتاب پیدا نمی کنید . مطالعه تاریخ معاصر ژاپن به دلایل مختلف به دلیل نا آشنایی ما با مختصات فرهنگی و تاریخی شرق آسیا در نگاه اول شاید کمی سنگین باشه ، در مورد این کتاب باید در بخش های ابتدایی صبور باشید تا روی برخی متخصات تسلط پیدا کنید . در ادامه کتاب خوبی رو مطالعه میکنید که قطعا ویژگی های جذاب خودش رو داره . نکات منفی کتاب به نظرم اول از همه ریز شدن رو جزییات سیاسی احزاب و جزییات برنامه اقتصادی اونهاست در مواقعی خسته کننده است و همچنین ترجمه کتاب هم خیلی مطلوب و روان نیست .

خوندن این کتاب من رو به مطالعه توسعه علاقه مند کرد. میشه گفت دقیقا چیزی که انتظار میرفت رو پوشش داد. هم درباره رشد اقتصادی ژاپن، هم ناسیونالیسم و نظامی گری، هم اصلاحات دوره میجی و هم پروسه غربی شدن فرهنگ ژاپن رو به خوبی توضیح داد. نکته جالب دیگر پیچیدگی رابطه ژاپن و آمریکاست که رقابت اقتصادی چالش سختی رو برای حفظ ژاپن بر مدار نظم دفاعی امنیتی بین المللی آمریکا ایجاد میکرده. با این حال ژاپنی ها همواره در تثبیت موقعیت ژاپن در نظام بین الملل موفق بودند و اینکار رو از طریق انعطاف پذیری چه به شکل دادن وام های سنگین خارجی، تنظیم موازنه تجاری با کشورها به شکلی که کمک کنند تراز تجاری برای کشورهای دیگه به شدت منفی نشه و حتی عذرخواهی های مکرر بابت دوره استعمارگری شون انجام میدهند.

In the rather short book, the author tries to bring about Political, Economic and Social Changes in Japan over a period of a century and a half. Due to lack of space, only the Political part is fleshed out and the book fails to bring forward a grand narrative of Japan's Rise. Endnotes are far and few in between and mostly deal with citations rather than explanations. The bibliography at the end however points one to some quality works in English.

Concise and well-written history of modern Japan from end of Tokugawa Era to the 1980's. A good introductory book for those relatively new to Japan history. Contains a good section on further reading.

Purchased in Japan, edition dated 1990. A classic political/economic history of the Meiji to current period. Very very interesting--a good overview of some of the key developments. Doesn't really explain the post war miracle except in general terms however.
