After escaping the horrors of the Academy, Calitha Araxie tries to live inconspicuously with her best friend, Dagwood. But Cali can’t avoid the relentless call of the sea or the islanders who attack her for her scarred appearance…that is, until Dagwood’s former roommate, Eamon, comes to the rescue.

With Eamon’s encouragement, they voyage to the marshlands of Eteria, where Cali meets God-folk and discovers more about the mystical blue tome linked to her powers. But Dagwood is troubled by his aging mentor’s health, and as every journey becomes more dismal, he seems to be filled with anger…or jealousy.

Following arguments with Dagwood and the looming threat of the Black Fleet, Cali takes solace in Eamon’s company, but as the group returns to Montauciel, only Dagwood understands the trauma Cali experienced there. Can Cali overcome enemies at every turn, kidnappings, and the faces from her past to confront who she truly is? And, as Eamon and Dagwood’s history is exposed, who will Cali choose to trust?

Victoria Ravenwood is the author of the Water-Folk Saga. She has loved fantasy for as long as she can remember. Some of her all time favourites are Robin Hobb, Andrzej Sapkowski and R.A. Salvatore - basically anything with butt-kicking yet realistic characters, which is how she likes to write her stories too.

She lives in Devon, UK, with her partner, daughter and sleepy pug, Tuna. She is an avid birdwatcher with a lifetime goal of seeing half the bird species in the world (she's currently only at 10%!) and when she's not writing, she enjoys cooking Asian food, making Spotify playlists for multiple genres of music she loves & gaming. Her favourite game of all time is The Secret of Monkey Island, which inspired many elements in the Water-Folk Saga.

Adventure and romance

Aren't those the two most important components of any good novel? And I'm glad to say, this book has plenty of both. I'm happy I finally got to catch up with Cali and her friends, I had been wondering what they would get up to in the next novel after finishing the first.

Like Jade and Tar, the writing is very fluent (like the sea ;) ) and fast-paced, which is ideal for an adventure story. Furthermore, there are many dialogues, which contribute to the vibrant feel of the novel. The characters are likeable, funny, and are very well-rounded. Compared to the first book, there is definitely more romance in this second installment, which I didn't mind one bit!

As I mentioned already in my review of book one, Victoria Ravenwood is a master worldbuilder. I would almost believe the places she mentions could be found in my atlas, that's how real they seem. The setting is very different from the first book, though, as the world of the Academy has made place for adventures on islands and high seas. Pirates ahoy!

I also love the fact that there's a summary of book one (I made my own, but this one was way better) and a glossary at the back of the book. That's so useful…Can everyone start doing that, pretty please?

I gave this book 4 stars out of 5!

I was very excited to read this book since I finished the first one. While I enjoyed it very much, the previous book was better according to me.

The book explored more places, and I got to see more variety in the people and their beliefs. I specifically liked Melody Cay where a character owned a book shop. It's something I dream of having someday, so the parts located there were my absolute favorite.

The characters developed in terms of maturity and experience. I loved Wroy as much as I did in the first book. His sweet and sympathetic nature warmed my heart.

Some new characters were introduced, and while I found one of them very annoying, they were needed to help the story progress. The author has done a wonderful job in creating all these characters that elicited the right kind of emotions from me.

The only thing I didn't like about the book was that it was too angsty for my liking. There were times I wished the characters would just talk it out rather than assuming things and making the situation worse. However, it didn't last long as the focus moved to important tasks.

There were also some parts that confused me, but I was able to catch up with the story quickly, and it didn't affect my opinion of the story.

The book was high on intensity and action, which kept things interesting. There are many more answers I need, and I hope to find them in the next book.

The ending was heartbreaking and beautifully written. I have a feeling some characters will be back for revenge, and I'd like to see how things work out. I'm also looking forward to reconnecting with some people from the previous book.

Overall, this was a great read. People who enjoy action-packed novels with unique magical abilities and the found-family trope will definitely enjoy it. I also know there are many readers who enjoy romance with a lot of angst, so this book is for you.

Ravenwood exceeds herself with the stunning sequel to Jade and Tar. Cali is a plucky heroine with strong yet complex familial and platonic relationships. Her story is rife with surprises and intrigue, making the reader unable to put the book down.
Cali also portrays a cautionary tale through a poor choice that allows the reader to safely explore consequences before being in that situation themselves. It is an important lesson for teen readers to learn and it is handled sensitively.
Copper and Smoke is not only entertaining; it is thought provoking. It is packed full of action, mysteries, and laughs as Cali navigates relationships, romance, and family. Copper and Smoke is an essential read!

Epic story

WOW just WOW I can't get enough of this epic story.
With all the different places they travel to, from the simplicity of Melody's cay to the beauty and size of Eteria. I like that this is a story of self discovery but in a very otherworldly way. Like can Cali really be part God? Or is she the daughter of a very strong magical water-folk? Whatever the case I'm glad she has Dagwood by her side, so he can help her figure out what her powers are. I was heartbroken when a special some died. 😭 Her dad has to many secrets and it looks like it's finally catching up to him and he will need to come clean to his daughters about it. With that said I am super excited to read the next book, to find out more about this fascinating world.

This volume is focused on two main subjects: the understanding of the blue book as a base to understand Cali's power and the love triangle that starts with the arrival of a new character.

I joined for the action and adventure of this pirate vibe world. The "romance" is more a tool to explore self-doubt and confidence than just romantic scenes. It was interesting to see the path the author chose for the characters.

It has a slow start, but closer to chapter 13 it celebrates into a roller coaster of emotions and action. I like how in this volume more characters seem to have a greater part in the story, participating more actively.

In case we need help the author included a glossary at the end so we can keep track of characters, locations, and terms.

This volume doesn't quite solve much, it adds more conflict that will continue in book three. Most of the time I wanted to hug Wroy, shake Dogwood, and slap Eamon, meaning the author creates the characters with depth and personality making them individuals although the cast is large.

Looking forward to concluding so many mysteries in book 3.

Copper and Smoke is the second book in the Water-Folk Saga, a series of five books which follow the tale of Calitha (Cali) Araxie as she uncovers her powers, and her journeys with her best friend, Dagwood at her side. Copper and Smoke takes Cali further than before as the world opens up around her and she learns not everyone and everything is as it seems. It is a fast-paced fantasy action adventure, full of mystery and a blossoming romance.

A few things you will find in the story:
🌊 A fierce heroine who must learn about her growing powers
🏴‍☠️ Sea voyages, sword fighting, tropical islands and pirates
👨🏽‍🤝‍👨🏽 God-folk, mystery and old enemies
🍻 Best friends, bonfires, beer and banter!
🧡 A new, charming love interest with a dark past
💗 A slow-burn friends-to-lovers subplot

Copper and Smoke is young adult fantasy, but does contain some more mature themes. Content warnings include: violence, blood, gore, alcohol consumption, death, emotional abuse, swearing. There are no sex scenes in this story.

I’ve been waiting for this book to come out since reading Jade and Tar and it doesn’t disappoint. I love Cali and Dagwood and it was interesting to see the course their relationship took.

If you enjoy reading books with mystery, action, adventure and relationships then this is one for you - it’s a real page turner!

I’m already looking forward to the next book to see what new adventures unfold for the characters.
