Turns out there are others like me, hidden in plain sight. Each of us possess a magical key that can manipulate time and space.
My father left a coded message for me before he died, telling me I must find them all before it’s too late.
But I’m not the only one looking for them: A shadowy figure known only as The Collector seeks to claim our power for his own dark purpose.
As bearers of the keys, we’ve all grown up on the fringes, guarding our secret possessions with our lives. None of the others have any reason to trust me, but somehow I must find a way…
The fate of the world depends on it.
Key of Spies is the second in a new series of exciting urban fantasy novels featuring a clever, sword-wielding heroine, endless mysteries to solve, pulse-pounding action, and a brand-new magical system in the gritty underworld of thievery and murder. The first three novels in this extended world will release in January through March of 2022.
It's very exciting to get back into the search for the magical keys and their holders! Belle and Bastien are a duo that I've come to love and it was great to see the transition in their relationship in this book. There's no animosity this time around and things have sort of fallen into a comfortable pattern between them. If you're getting your hopes up, it definitely isn't romance or anywhere near that point…yet. But, both Bastien and Belle are opening up to one another, sharing stories of their past and how they grew up. It's refreshing to not see Belle always lashing out, although there is still some of that. It's baby steps for sure, but she's learning how to process her feelings and is letting her walls down just a bit. Bastien is really food for Belle, even if she won't admit it. He pushes her when she needs it and challenges her to do better.
The one thing you see in this book that wasn't really shown in the previous book is more of the process of how the keys work. Because Bastien wasn't as involved in the first book as he is now, you really start to understand how complex his key is. It seemed so easy before, taking you to where you need to go, but it's a definite trial and error type of process that takes some time to get the wanted results if the item or place you're searching for is unknown.
There were a lot of surprises in this book, one being a visit from someone from Belle's past that gives her some closure and lessens her guilt a little bit. The other being the Key of Lies and everything surrounding it. Becky/Rebecca seems like a likeable person in both her personalities, but there is something that doesn't sit right with me about her and everything she has been involved in and dragged Belle into. It all seems innocent enough but not at the same time. Maybe I'm like Belle and don't trust easily. I'm not sure what to think about this particular character if she continues to be part of the main storyline. We'll see how things go in the next book!
I absolutely adore this series! It’s such an enjoyable read and has all the mystery I have come to expect from J.L. Night.
Book 2 sees Maribel and Bastien heading off in search of the other Key Holders in the hopes to warn them about the Key Collector. We are introduced to Becky/Rebecca the holder of the Key of Lies and I don’t trust her one bit. She screams trouble to me and I’m looking forward to see if I am correct or not in that assumption. It was great to see Maribel’s emotional growth which is encouraged and nurtured by Bastien and its beautiful to see their relationship develop. Maribel’s latest assignment from the Guild isn’t as straight forward as she would like and comes with an unexpected surprise which leaves her second guessing herself and the people around her.
Key of Spies is a captivating read with plot twists you don’t see coming. I need to know who the hooded man is!!! The suspense is killing me. I feel like something big is going to drop in the next instalment that will blow our minds and I’m looking forward to it!
The mystery continues! I'm definitely enjoying this series. In book two we find Belle growing a bit by opening herself up and stepping out to attempt to form some connections. She is on a sort of one-step-forward-two-steps-back sort of pace right now with her emotional development. I definitely wanted to shake her a few times but I see hope that she will eventually take the leap to be vulnerable. There was an incredibly poignant and touching scene with her Dad in this book that was really moving. The mystery continues, with a growing plot around the different keys and key holders. I am super intrigued by the supposed villain in this series (the hooded man who smells like gasoline). I have theories! If you like spirited fierce fmc's, cocky sweet guys, mystery and intrigue, you'll definitely enjoy this series.
Book #2 takes off right where we left off-with Maribel and Bastian starting their hunt for missing keys. I'm still really enjoying this almost "light" plot that isn't heavily doused in romance or all that extra stuff that tends to weigh fantasy books down. I was hoping for a little more action/progress in regards to the keys, but that's just me. I am still really enjoying Bastians character and his ability to put up with Maribel. This is such a unique plot line that sucks me right in with each book!
Hoping to see a little more character development in Maribel in book #3 and perhaps some more chemistry??
Thank you to LJ and her publisher for a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!
Second book in the series and it picks right back off where the first one left you without any missed or skipped scenes. You get to see Maribel as she looks for the other keys from her fathers list (which is from the first book). Maribel and Bastien team up together both using their own unique keys missions and to find key holders.
There is still lots of character development within this story of the 2 main characters and you get to see a really nice scene when Maribel uses the key to search and finds an unexpected surprise (won't spoil your surprise on this though).
Can't wait to read the next book and what happens next!
Maribel and Bastien embark on a new adventure trying to locate the rest of the key holders. But adventure and danger isn't far behind them. The Key Collector is after the keys as well, and won't give up hunting for them.
Another action packed installment in the series, with amazing suspense. I loved the way Maribel's character has grown. From trusting no one, to trusting Bastien, fighting feelings of distrust and jealousy. The scene with her father in the past was an emotional rollercoaster!
I honestly can't wait for the next installment! If you haven't read the series yet, I highly recommend it!
She's never been good at trusting people, and has a lot to learn, but maybe she needs some people to learn to trust. She's learning that life isn't about just finding the truth about her father's murder, the keys, or her debt to the guild. So maybe she does need or even want friends, but is it wise. Belle is starting to grow into herself, and she knows she's a force to be reckoned with. Even if she's not sure that trusting Bastien is the right thing.
Loved book 2, we get movement on finding the key holders and a potential new friend. I’m holding out my opinion on the news friend because it’s mixed right now, especially after that ending. But Bastien! He was great, that ending may be a set back for him, but I personally don’t think it will apply to him. Why? Because of his nickname for Belle, not Belle but the new one. It’s a Friends ref and she has no idea what it means, but anyone that’s watched Friends knows what it means and I am choosing to believe that makes him exempt or mostly exempt to that reveal at the end.
The second book picks up where we left off. We get to see Maribel's continued character growth as she struggles with her desire for human connection. We get further into working through the mystery with some of our questions answered and more being added. It's a suspense in regard to how her journey to find answers plays out. There were definite moments of frustration with Maribel and her character development that felt a bit repetitive but not enough to take away from the story arc. We'll see how things unfold in the next book!
I really love this whole magic keys thing. The concept is interesting and could go so many ways. I think I liked this one a little better than the first book even. It was a little faster paced, and I really connected with the characters more. Maribel and Bastien working together was really fun, and there was a good amount of humour. There was a couple of times that things got pretty heart wrenching for poor Belle. And again, we are left with some perplexing questions. Looking forward to seeing what happens next.
Key of Spies is the exciting second installment of the Key Collector. I’ve loved this series so far and seeing the relationship between Belle and Bastien grow. In this book we got to learn more about the keys Bastien is slowly pulling Belle out of her bubble and bring her to new places and foods and it’s cute to read! Can’t wait for book three to see who this key collector is, and how to FMC will solve the questions floating around!
In the first book, I was not sure how to feel about Belle as a character, because she is very closed off and not emotionally open with others. I like her relationship with Bastien because he is exposing her to more of the real world and getting her to open up, something that she desperately needs. The elements of mystery and suspense continue throughout this book, which I love because I am a sucker for a good mystery. This series is totally a must-read.
Another amazing story. I loved the scene with the cupids bow in the past. The dynamic with the key of lies and Rebecca and Becky was interesting. I liked the ending with the note. I feel like there's more to the Siren's, hopefully Rebecca/Becky will come up again feel like there's still something there to the story we haven't gotten the full picture for yet. Maribel's story continues to be intriguing and I can't wait to continue it with the next book.
Loving this series so far! Maribel and Bastien are on a quest looking for answers and keys. This series has suspense, and action that sucks you in right away. I’m loving the character growth for Maribel. I feel like we get to watch her open up even more in this book. Maribel and Bastien’s friendship is growing and potentially changing to something more. Can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
It starts where the last book left off. Hunting for answers... We get new people to go with Bastian and Belle, that I still am not sure I like all of them. I guess we have to see how their role plays out to know for sure. Rebecca and Becky were a nice addition and I hope to see more of them. Bastian and Belle develop more as he pulls her out of her shell so to say. You are left with more questions especially with the ending.
I love this series so much, the mystery, the suspense, the magic, this is one of my favorite kind of books!!! 🥰 Of course the romance and a hot guy are a plus 😂, but the plot by itself, wow!!! 🤩 Can't wait to see more of the growth Belle has started in this book, how her relationship with Bastien is going to develop and more about the Key Collector and all the mystery surrounding him!!! ❤
I'm definitely a fan of this series, most especially because of Maribel. I understand her prickly attitude after being alone for so long and not having anyone to confide in. Now that she has Bastien and they are becoming friends, I'm really rooting for them to get back together! And the mystery just keeps getting deeper and deeper. I love the idea of so many different keys that are special for moving people through time and space and other miraculous things. I can't wait for the third book!
Key of Spies by LJ Night is Book 2 of The Key Collector series. This is a phenomenal story with a fantastic FMC Maribel who has grown a great deal since Book 1. What will happen between her and Bastien -- will he prove trustworthy? What will they find out about the Key Collector, and who he is? There is a lot to come in Book 3. Really looking forward to continuing this adventure. Highly recommend this book and series. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary review.
Key of Spies is the second book in this exciting series! I loved this book and the story. It was exciting seeing Belle and Bastien working undercover together. Bastien is starting to bring Belle out of her own bubble by introducing her to new foods and even sightseeing on some of their travels. There is lots of action, mystery and suspense in this book and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
I like these fun little adventures of Bastian and Belle. In this book we add Becky/Rebecca to the mix. I love how jealous Belle gets! She is such a bad FMC so to see her get rattled was very fun. I can’t wait to get more clues about who is the collector. I’m almost nervous that Belle is going to get her heart broken. Ugh! I just need the next book.
Key of Spies is book 2 of the Key Collector series. this is such a great and interesting storyline that has pulled me in! i have loved everything this author has written so far! i have been so enjoying seeing Belle and Bastien grow together. more and more of the story is opening up, and it's exciting to see where it's going! looking forward to the next book :)
I’m really enjoying this series so far! In this installment we get to see Belle start to open up more to Bastien as he digs away at her walls. Boy let me tell ya that’s no easy task. We are learning more about this world in general and there’s a lot of unpacking to do here. This is an engaging series that will keep you on your toes!
Another great installment in this series! I could not put this down! We get right back to Maribel and Bastien on tracking down other key holders. They also spend a lot of time together. They track down another key holder, which I'm still not sure about but you do you girl. But that ending! Don't trust anyone.
Maribel continues to grow within the series. Bastien qnd her friendship continues to grow and I look forward to see it bloom. She's learning there is more then the truth about her father's murder out there. We meet some new characters in this book I look forward to get to see how they interact with the others and see how that goes in book.3 and what's in store.
I am so enjoying this series. This is book 2 in the Key Collector series. Picks up right where book 1 leaves off. Really loving this storyline. Love Maribel and Bastian. Both are just fantastic characters I am really looking forward to book 3. This is a series that just sucks you right in and then your hooked. Definitely recommend.
I love coming into this world where magical keys exist! I really enjoyed getting to know Maribel and Bastien better. I loved their relationship building and let's hope they get together!! I really enjoyed Becky and Rebecca's characters plus the other hidden surprises. Can't wait for the rest this series!!!
I have such a book hangover from this book, I already can't wait for the next one. All of the suspense, all of the emotional turmoil, it just sucks you in. There's great story progression and a nice little plot twist. It's well worth the read!
The adventure continues; and, boys, are we on edge with excitement, suspense, and wonder. Night has done a masterful job writing this storyline. Her intricate plot web has us completely captivated and it will leave you craving for more. This is a must read, add it to your TBRs!!
Loved book 2 to this series, getting to go deeper into the story and it's characters. As everything starts to unfold, I fall into the story more and more. I love Belle and how much I can relate to her. And her story is so interesting to follow, book 3 is gonna be good!
A great second book in The Key Collector series and I can’t wait read the next book. I definitely recommend starting the books a read because the storyline and characters are wonderfully written.
