Be Kind, Rewind

Rate this book
A 90s nostalgia, enemies to lovers novel from Melissa Brown, set in her brand new Spotlight Video Series!

She’s always dreamed of living her life in the spotlight. But for now, she’s just another college student working at Spotlight Video.

The year is 1994 and Naomi Parker has always dreamed of being in the movies. She’s hoping to make that dream a reality by enrolling in the best performing arts program the Midwest has to offer. But respected programs cost money…lots of it…and her scholarship will only go so far. To make ends meet, Naomi gets a job at the most popular video store on campus, Spotlight Video, and she quickly becomes part of its unique culture. There’s only one employee she can’t stand, the Assistant Manager, Buzzkill Ben.

Ben Watson is tired of the employee revolving door at Spotlight Video. He’s tired of people calling in sick, blowing off work, and treating the place like a bar with no cover charge. As the Assistant Manager, he works hard to balance work and school so that he can make something of himself when he graduates. There’s only one problem…he can’t get the newest employee out of his head. She’s just like all the others—she’s constantly late, doesn’t take things seriously and questions his authority. But she’s also nothing like the others, or anyone he’s ever met, and that’s the problem.

Will working closely together spark a romantic interest between these very different people, or will Ben be a buzzkill after all?

I haven't read a Melissa Brown book in quite some time and I forgot how much I enjoy her writing. I loved the friend group in this one and all the 90's nostalgia. It was a fun and sweet read that had a decent bit of angst.

This was a really cute book for me. It was soo nice to come back to 90's with all the movies that were famous around this time.

I am not an american, but I watched 90% of the movies the characters were discussing and I love them all. The feeling being in the 90's is soo good. I love all the soundtracks form those movies and I am even listening to them now.

Melissa Brown's idea to return the readers into the year 1994 was really fun. We've got to see what the life of the younger people then. And the love...ahh, the love. Ben and Naomi were the cutest couple.

Naomi is a great girl, who has an obsession with movies...and with a pink hair. If that is not awesome I don't know what it is.
Ben....or should I say..."Buzzkill Ben" 😁. He looked a bit uptight to me at first, but through the story we were seeing another side of him...the good side. The banters between both of them were so much fun. And what did you expect when you have sparks flying...loveee, with a capital L.

I recommend this book to everyone who wants to come back to the 90's again and want to have someee fun 😃.

This was fun! The 90s were my era and it was so fun to see it come to life again in this book. Ben and Naomi had amazing chemistry, even when they were at each other's throat. I loved their banter and back and forth and it was fun to see Ben lighten up and see his fun side. Overall, I enjoyed this so much and can't wait to see what the author does next with the series.

If you are a fan of Empire Records then you will love this book. It is a cute rom com. If you used to rent VHS tapes and love movies this is for you. It was a fast read and cute!

This story was like looking back into a special time of my life. The nostalgia was overwhelming. I was the same age as these characters in the same year, 1994/95. ALL of the 90s references were spot on. I watched all of the shows and movies. Listened to all of the music.
This world based on the employees of a video story is totally awesome and I am so psyched that we are getting more books.

The characters are so well done and are such a variety of personalities totally fitting the time. It felt like a family to me. This story centers around Ben & Naomi. It's described as an enemies to lovers story but it didn't completely feel that way to me. More like opposites attract. It's definitely forbidden (which are my favorites) as it is a boss/employee relationship.

You should know going in that there is no sex. It's so much about the flirting and beginning of a new relationship. I honestly didn't mind at all though. It's more about the romance and following your heart.

Melissa Brown takes me right back to the film Clerks with this fun, nostalgic 90s Enemies-to-Lovers RomCom. In the time of VHS and movie rentals, when film knowledge was impressive because there was no site called IMDB and you didn't have an encyclopedia cell phone in your pocket, Ms. Brown has a lot of fun and brings us along for the ride. She's created a quirky cast in this book which makes it interesting to read. And the romance between Ben and Naomi is really a bonus.

In Be Kind Rewind, we meet the employees of the best job on a college campus, Spotlight Video. Ben is the assistant manager, and part of his job is reeling in the cast of oddballs and misfits that work there. When Naomi starts at Spotlight Video, she and Ben do not get off on the right foot. Naomi does need the job - her bank account is in dire straights - but it is definitely not her passion. Naomi knows she is destined for great things. She is going to be a movie star, not stuck returning rented porn videos behind a flimsy pink curtain. So she isn't always the ideal employee and when Ben scolds her, which is often, she finds him to be such a buzzkill. But soon, their feelings start to change, much to their chagrin. Can they overcome their bad first impressions of each other to develop a romantic relationship? And if so, what happens when Naomi graduates and goes off to make it big?

Be Kind Rewind is a witty, lively, and entertaining book. The pop culture references are quippy and fast paced, and if you grew up in the 90s, you'll get the references. If not, it's okay - you've got that handy cell phone encyclopedia in your pocket, remember? Ben and Naomi's romance is rocky at first but soon develops like an old polaroid picture (see what I did there?). It's blurry at first but eventually, with a few shakes, the image shows up nice and clear. They were a cute couple, even though I did side with Ben a lot of the time (I guess I'm a buzzkill too). I'm looking forward to reading more from this quirky crew and transporting myself back to a better plaid-filled time.

**Ms. Brown has written a really fun prequel as well, called Adventures in Inventory which helps you get an idea of the cast of characters, which I really recommend starting with. Not necessary to enjoy the book, but if you can read it, do so.

I received a free copy of this book from Grey's Promotions and am voluntarily leaving a review.

90’s nostalgia alert on aisle 1 at Spotlight Video🎞
Naomi, Ben and the rest of the employees who work at the campus video store were an absolutely fun and entertaining blast from the past!
The quirky characters are all students at a Midwest liberal arts college and are planning on careers in the movie industry.
So, working at the campus video rental store is the perfect job for them and a great setting for this story.

Ben and new employee Naomi’s hate/lust vibes are sparking immediately- they are classic opposites attract. Sully is driving everyone crazy in his long- term mourning of Kurt Cobain’s death.
The pop culture nods just keep going throughout the story. I loved it!
The employees are all friends and it makes their conversations so lively and entertaining.
They are a vibrant and clever group of people, there is so much hilarious banter. About romance, life, musicians and movies 🎥 of course!
Fashion trends get mentioned as well, it’s done so cleverly and it was a bomb trip down memory lane for me.
I felt like pulling out an old flannel shirt, my Doc Martens and listening to some Seattle grunge.

The characters are lovable, hilarious and the perfect amount of quirky.
80’s and 90’s pop culture is a favorite of mine so this book was such a delight to me.
My beloved TV show boyfriend Jordan Catalano is mentioned and I still swoon.
John Hughes movies are discussed, Star Wars and what the future could hold… oh, it’s hilarious!

It’s a fresh, upbeat story. It’s light, enjoyable and really well paced.
I loved that almost all of the story takes place at the video store. I could see everything playing out in my head as if it were a movie.

My one issue is that it’s advertised as a RomCom, but there’s not a lot of romance. It’s a bit misleading in my opinion.
It’s extremely low on the heat and lust scale, and the romance actually, too. There’s no “on page sex” or much affection even.
That’s ok, however the romance was in the blurb and it wasn’t actually a big part of the story. That was disappointing and I think it was a missed opportunity. It had all the potential it just got a bit pushed to the side.

I still enjoyed this really original story and the comedy.
I look forward to the next book in the series, I’m not ready to say goodbye to these fabulous and fun characters… or the 90’s.
I do hope the next book has more romance.

This is a cute enemies-to-lovers set in the mid-90’s at a video store and I loved everything about it. Naomi and Ben are fun characters who just seem to rub one another the wrong way but there’s a real love-to-hate-you vibe. The rest of the store knows they want each other, but Ben and Naomi haven’t fully realized it yet. There’s a touch of Ross and Rachel will-they/won’t they plus a lot of angst moving the story along. I love the supporting cast and the author did a great job laying the foundation for a fun new series.

I’m a 90’s girl all the way so I really dig the references and culture. As a pop culture nerd, I really enjoyed the role that movies and movie quotes play in the book. It gives the story another dimension beyond just what’s happening around them because movies are important to this gang, so they spend a lot of time debating the merits of favorite flicks. This is my first book by the author, but I’ll definitely be reading more.

Breakfast Club or Sixteen Candles? Be careful which one you choose as it will determine who your are.

Ahh I am so glad I picked this one up, the cover is cute and fun and the blurb sounded different. It completely was different this is definitely a 90s nostalgic read. All before Hugh Grant was famous, and when we had to go out to rent movies and pray when we got home we did not run into a spoiler ending. Naomi is an aspiring actress at college and just got a job at Spotlight Video were she meets a group of people who are all different. One guy has drawn her attention the manager Ben senior in college. This book made a lot of Breakfast club reference and it made perfect sense, in the video store they can all talk about their picks and"who will be the next big thing/ what are classics." Ben is quiet and sweet, he can also be moody. He's the guy who falls and falls hard so that makes him risk adverse careful of not breaking his heart. Naomi is young at times she can send mixed signals but luckily she has to best of friends to help guide her back. Give Ben and Naomi a chance to bring young love back!

This is a slow burn friends to lovers young adult romance. That builds on the story leaving room for the next characters to get their own book.

OMG!!! I absolutely loved this book. Taking place in the Nineties, this book brought on all kinds of nostalgic feelings. I had so much fun living in the Nineties. Video rental stores, pizzerias, R.E.M., Pretty In Pink, and The Breakfast Club. Things were so simple then.

Naomi starts a new job her freshman year of college at Spotlight Video. Upon her first day she meets an eclectic group of people, who debate movies and are downright fun. She quickly realizes this is her place and these are her peeps. But the assistant manager Ben really rides her nerves and the battle of wills begins.

This book was a lot of fun to read. Anyone growing up in the Nineties can relate to this story. The characters are cool, unique and eccentric. I loved the atmosphere at Spotlight Video. I especially loved the debates among the employees there. Everyone was energetic and highly entertaining.

The story revolves around Ben and Naomi. I do have to say that there were times I wanted to strangle them. Both are very stubborn and strong willed, causing them to have so much friction. But the chemistry between them is strong and irresistible.

With the Nineties setting and crazy fun characters, this book is starting off to be a new favorite series for me. I love reminiscing about that time in life and this book brings back many memories for me to travel down memory lane with a big smile on my face.

I was so excited when this popped up on my Kindle, a book about the 90's? Hell yeah!

Noami and Ben have this slow burn chemistry and their arguing is like foreplay. After going to college to pursue acting, Naomi gets a job at Spotlight Video because of her love for movies and meets her manager, Ben, a man capable of getting on her nerves all the time.

One night Naomi goes to a college party that happens to be at the house of Buzzkill Ben. This is when she sees the Ben outside of the store, a Ben she can like. Even the crew at the video store can see the constant sparks of electricity between these two characters. The constant chess moves until Ben wins over Naomi was such a fun game to watch and their witty banter was one of my favorite aspects of their relationship.

This was such a cute book and took me back to the 90’s. I like that the book was set in the video store and there were constant comparisons of the workers to different characters in movies. It reminded me of Empire Records but about a video store. The other characters in the story really make the 90’s theme stick out and the mention of multiple movies took me back to my childhood. I highly recommend taking a trip down memory lane and reading Be Kind, Rewind.

Movie talk is our love language. My kids grew up watching movies I adored from the 80s/90s and are better human beings for it. Besides the romance brewing between Ben and Naomi this is the best book for movie references. The “debates” about movies are epic and bring back many memories. My favorite is the Star Wars conversation, just read my mind. So the book is set in a video store, like Blockbuster, on a college campus. The crew is made up of a rag tag group with different personalities with one goal, careers in performing arts like movies, scriptwriting, stage design, etc. A video store is the perfect place for this group. I’ve read all of Brown’s books, her style is easy and exciting, but this one feels like it came from her heart. We write what we know. I can’t wait to see to what’s in store for the rest of the guys. *My copy was provided by the author but I’ve provided my review voluntarily.

Ok, let's get to the nitty gritty before I review. This is a slow, burn, sweet romance... ie 0% sex. It's closed door, sweet, zero focus on the sex. I NEVER
read these kind of books anymore, but I was offered an ARC for my honest opinion. I grabbed this one based on the blurb , the 90s nostalgia theme and the cover us super cute.

What I loved about this book: allll the 90s references! This book is steeped in my recollection and reminiscing of my 20s!! It brought back so many great memories. From the movie and TV references, the lingo, the premise of working in chain video store during college.
The slow burn/forbidden romance between Ben & Naomi was sweet, but I found myself more in love with the group dynamics than the actual love story.

*this is not bad thing because they were a huge part of this book!**

Melissa is new to me author and I enjoyed her writing style. She sets up the next book beautifully.

This book has the earmarks of a fabulous audiobook, so I really, really hope she plans on putting out audio for this series!

Thank you to Melissa Brown, Ladyboss Press, and Grey’s Promotions for the advanced reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Naomi and Ben are college students at a small performing arts school in the suburbs of Chicago and work together at Spotlight Video. The year is 1994, and this book is chock full of 90s pop culture references and movies (but nothing too obscure).

It’s enemies to more, and there’s a great vibe and chemistry between Naomi and Ben. I loved how they communicated via their video shelves! Very clean romance, but I didn’t mind because they were just so cute together.

Be Kind, Rewind, sets up for a great series - I cannot wait for book 2 after reading the teaser in the back.

A fun read for anyone who lived the 90s or loves to learn and read about it now!

Be Kind, Rewind took me right back to my high school days, and I am sucker for some 90’s nostalgia. I loved all the movie and pop culture references, and it really made me reminisce on all the things I loved about that time. And I loved going to the video store!
The romance itself was cute and sweet, a very slow burn and I enjoyed it. I think Naomi and Ben are super cute and would make for the perfect Hollywood couple if we could see into their futures. I think that my most favorite thing was the group dynamics. It reminded me so much of my first job as a teenager, working with other teenagers. Probably a universal experience we can all relate to on some level. Overall, I really enjoyed it.

Well this book was a fun blast from the past! If you are a 90’s kid this will bring back so many memories for you! I sure do miss going to a video store!! This was a funny quick read! I was hooked from the beginning, it was like watching a movie in my mind! If you are looking for a romance that is super spicy this one won’t be the book for you. This was a very much a slow burn and a clean romance. The cast of characters in this book will definitely make you excited for the next books in this series!

I honestly loved reading this, it was wholesome and funny with the perfect bit of 90s nostalgia and romance. I loved the character building and the bickering between Ben & Naomi, I can’t wait to read about them in the future books in this series and am very anxious to know who the next books main love interests will be. Spotlight video is more than just a movie rental store, it’s employees are a family. They look after and take care of one another, they give advice, they bicker, they make jokes and they love each other. If you’re on the fence about reading this, just take the leap and do so.. you will not regret it. Perfect 90s nostalgia romance.

This was such a sweet rom com. I'm obsessed with everything 90s and this brought me back to my childhood. I felt very nostalgic throughout the entire book.

Ben and Naomi work at there college campus video store, she's studying to be and actress and he is studying special effects. I loved there banter and enemies aspect of there relationship, and eventually when they finally realize maybe there is more there.

Special mention to the side characters they were top tier they made the book very enjoyable and hilarious love them.

I feel like this book needs to be made into a movie, I really enjoyed it.

Holy cow, I just relived the 90’s chapter by chapter. This was a very fun read! Naomi wants to be a actress she will get there doing one play at a time. She gets a job at a video store near her college where everyone that works there has their own creative ambitions. Ben is majoring in visual effects at school and tries to manage the video store the rest of the time. Every video store worker is a character within themselves and I loved them all. There is always a debate about what movie is better and how can they improve on each movie. I had total flash backs as some of my favorite movies were mentioned. Naomi and Ben definitely struggled with their communication and I found her to be a bit immature but wow did they have a great connection. I really am looking forward to reading more books in this series.

Sigh… I had a young family in the early 90’s that included taking them to the video store most weekend. This story takes me back to some of the sweetest days of my life. For the nostalgia alone this book had me from page one. Wink.

I love that a full video store cast surrounds our couple, Naomi and Ben. They are both college students. Ben is a supervisor and Naomi a clerk. The drama, misunderstanding, battling between these two is crazy. They have me laughing some of the time. At times I must admit, I am irritated with them when they have young love drama happening. That being said, I can’t stop routing for them. Young love can be messy especially when imperfect people are to fearful to communicate candidly.

This book has some things that have me scratching my head but for the most part I am completely invested. I see that two other storylines are coming in this series. Yes I will be checking them out especially because I loved the crew in this book and need more.

Happy Reading Everyone! XOXO

I really liked this book. I liked the fact that the story takes place at the 1990's. Brings back so many memories.

I liked the characters. I adored Ben. Sometimes I got mixed with secondary characters, but that's okay.

I liked the way the book is written. All the pop culture references were great! The chemistry between main characters was visible.

This book made me wanna go back to my childhood.

Friday Night Fun 🍿

As a Xennial, I was a high school student in the 90s. And every Friday night, the entire neighborhood was at the local video store picking up movies for the weekend. (Of course by the time we did we were too tired to watch them!)

Since the pandemic, I have felt super nostalgic for the 90s and been drawn to tv and stories from a simpler time. So I just had to read “Be Kind, Rewind” by Melissa Brown (found on kindle unlimited).

It takes place primarily in a video store and follows the lives of its employees - university students studying at the local arts college.

It was everything I was looking for at the time and I enjoyed every minute of this sweet, funny read. 4⭐️

You should read it if you love movies and 90s pop culture references, are feeling nostalgic or ever wanted to work in a video store back in the day.

"Be Kind, Rewind" was a fast-paced, funny, and sweet workplace romance that featured an ensemble of endearing, quirky characters. I loved the banter between protagonists Naomi Parker and Ben Watson, as well as all of the movie quotes and cultural references from the 1980s/1990s. (The Super Bowl Shuffle!) Most importantly, however, this book was just easy to read. The dialogue flowed, descriptions were perfectly crafted, and I felt like I was standing next to the characters and experiencing the same events as them.

I very much enjoyed this book and recommend it for all fans of sweet contemporary(-ish) romance and romantic comedy. I look forward to picking up the next book in the series.

It’s a total flashback and I’m here for it! If you’re looking to relive your youth or visit for the first time, Be Kind Rewind is the book for you.

This book is just plain fun. In the feel of Empire Records, this story took me back to a time when life was simpler. No social media and you still carried your Canon camera around for group photos. The romance is innocent BUT what made me smile was the nostalgia. I was that kid renting VHS tapes and hanging with my college friends every weekend. Spotlight Video becomes it own character, connecting this mismatch group of teens together and creating bonds that will last a lifetime.

If you are a 90s teen, this book is for you.
If you are a college kid now, this book should be for you!

Picture it: 1994 - the world is reeling from Kurt Cobain's death.
John Hughes has put out movie after movie.
You're still laughing or bawling at Forrest Gump.
You still love Home Alone and plan on watching it at Christmas.
And you're a college kid trying to have a few bucks in your checking account.

That is the setting for this book.
If you were a teenager in 1994, you probably spent a lot of time at Blockbuster Video or a local video store, especially if your local theatre didn't have .99c movie nights (ours was Tuesdays!!!).

What I loved about this book: I loved the movie references, and the convos. I loved how it felt like you were reading a setting like the move Capitol Records or any Jay & Silent Bob/Kevin Smith film. Shoot, even Office Space was part of this vibe.
I loved how life was simpler. There was no social media. You had to take the bus. You had to be on time or fess up. You had to make it big because of your hard work, not because you get discovered on You Tube or Instagram or TikTok. That's Gen X kids, y'all! #bestgenerationever

Now for the reason I took away half a star: I hated how fickle Naomi and Ben were in places. They both were giving bad drama to other characters. It hurt to read that and I kept putting myself back in the 90s and wondered if i was like that. And I realized, college is the age where we should make mistakes, but maybe not like that.

But here's the thing: there's more from this series! Don't get me wrong, I fell hard for Ben, but Im excited to really uncover the next set of employees working with Ben and Naomi. I do plan on reading the rest of the series because, well, I'm a 90s teen and two, I'm married to the guy who watched Pulp Fiction at least 30 times in the theatre.

Bring on the next book in the series!!

Quick, what's your favorite John Hughes movie?!

I really enjoyed this fun book! I love a good retro rom-com, and Be Kind, Rewind totally delivers! Melissa Brown is a new-to-me author. I love her writing style and goofy characters. This took me back to the days of Blockbuster hangouts and movie marathons with friends! Be Kind, Rewind is chock-full of nineties nostalgia, this is a really fun new adult romance. It is a lighthearted, low-angst, enemies to lovers rom-com.

The Spotlight Video buddies are fun, flirty, and awesome reminders of high school days spent debating movies with friends. Ben and Naomi have terrific chemistry from the start. Be Kind, Rewind is a terrific workplace, enemies-to-lovers romance with heaps of witty banter. Brown writes quirky & hilarious characters. This romance is a heartwarming and sweet tale of adjusting to adulthood in the early nineties. Be Kind, Rewind has heaps of nineties pop culture references from music to movies and everything in between. If you're looking for a fun story that reads like your favorite buddy movie, get Be Kind, Rewind now!!

I absolutely loved the 90s nostalgia in this book! Although I did not know every movie they talked about, there were so many jokes about things happening or not happening in the future that had me chuckling.
Ben and Naomi work together at a video rental store on the campus of their college. The other characters, their co-workers, really help make the story but at times I was confused about who was who- there were just so many names! Ben is the assistant manager of the store and is a bit uptight about work. He and Naomi don't get along well in the beginning, but their friendship begins to grow. However, there is so much miscommunication between them. Even when they were getting along, I didn't necessarily feel the spark between them..
Overall I enjoyed the 90s throwbacks and I'd recommend it when you're in the mood for a light, fun read.
