I loved the previous book and I wanted the same for the current one. Unfortunately, I couldn’t be engaged in this one.
I had a hard time trying to connect with both main characters and I gave up at 53%.

Wow, I am blown away by this book. It's beautiful, raw, and gripped my soul. Shadowed Hearts is a standalone Contemporary Romance. Read the trigger warning; there are some serious subjects.

The book starts one year after Naked Hearts. Mignon is still struggling with the trauma caused by Salvatore. She is at her wit's end and is off to find herself and goes camping. Right here is where I laugh hysterically. She knows nothing about camping, and of course, her foul mouth is at full force. A storm hits, and she is off to find shelter. She does find shelter along with a Grumpy handsome man Named Foxx.

From the beginning, with Mignon's fierceness, foul mouth, and Foxx's stubborn, grumpy self, I knew they were perfect for each other. I was waiting for them to kill each other or rip their clothes off.
Both have trauma and fighting their demons to try and move forward. Foxx is focused in the past, and I don't blame him at all. His story brought so many tears to my eyes.

I swooned and fell in Love with Foxx. He has a special place in my heart. I am tearing up writing about him. Everything he went through, my heart bleeds for him. When he loves, he gives it all plus more. He does what he thinks is right even when he is hurting himself. All I can say is he is a gentle giant.

This book is about grief, trauma, struggling, PTSD, healing, finding yourself, and most importantly, love. They have such a special unbreakable bond. The author wrote about a series subject; she delivered it with exact precision with tact and delicacy.

Shadowed Hearts is a one-click book. Don't walk; run to read this book and have tissues on hand.

"And when the shadows knocked, I opened the door for them. The darkness took me, and I let it. And what’s worse, I liked it."

Shadowed Hearts tells the story of Mignon and Foxx, two broken souls who find themselves in each other. Mignon's story begins in Naked Hearts with an unspeakable betrayal, leaving her with intense anger and a complete lack of trust. But underneath the anger, the pain and sadness need to come out so she takes a trip to the mountains to try to reclaim her life and her sense of self. In what starts out as a survivalist tale, she meets Foxx, her polar opposite, and the two get trapped in his cabin during a blizzard. Foxx has troubles of his own and prefers his solitude so the banter between them has a total enemy vibe. However, in this forced proximity, an attraction to one another develops and grows until it's undeniable and they no longer want to fight to resist the temptation. Once they give in to their wants and needs, an emotional whirlwind ignites between them. The sex is steamy and emotions are intensified as they try to work through their respective issues, learning that to trust is to surrender as a fire burns between them.

"She’d become my everything, breathing purpose back into my life when I needed it most."

Mignon is a total badass and unafraid to speak her mind. Foxx, meanwhile, is so deliciously sexy and protective of her, but has his own storm brewing inside. When Foxx's secrets threaten their relationship, will love be enough? So many issues are addressed here including anger, fear, guilt, shame and grief, along with forgiveness and self worth, taking the reader on a heartbreaking journey through it all. I was so invested in these characters and could feel their pain and struggles as if they were my own. I loved watching the breakdown of their self protective walls and the fortitude through which they found their way towards a HEA. And the symbolism in Foxx's tattoo was absolutely beautiful.

Valentina writes these books that tear my heart into a million pieces before putting it back together again fuller than before. I fought to hold back tears reading this, tears of sadness and tears of joy, leaving me breathless either way. I highly recommend her writing but strongly advise reading Naked Hearts first. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next though I would love to see Harry and Fiona find their HEA.

"Cowardice may be a disease, but having the strength to feel our pain is the bravest thing of all, capable of erasing the darkest of shadows in our broken souls."

I have not read the first book in this series, but this book is and can be read as a stand-alone novel. Although, after finishing this book I do want to go back and check out the first book in this series. Broken characters do make great storylines. What I mean by this, is that they are not perfect, but they have scars, whether this be emotional or physical scars. It brings the characters to a more personal and relatable level. In this case, Mignon and Foxx.

Both of these two have emotional walls built up but the more time they spent in each other's company, they slowly let the walls come crumbling down. Boy of boy when they do, this is when things really heat up. Foxx definitely had his prey in his sights and that is Mignon. This country boy did find his match with a city girl.

5 STARS for Shadowed Hearts by Valentina

I do not think I have had a book impact me so emotionally in some time. Ultimately , for me Shadowed Hearts is about love and trust in all things. Wow , I could not put this book down !

It would be helpful to read Book 1 in the series but Shadowed Hearts can be read as a standalone. This is the story of Mignon and Foxx - what a story it is !
I can’t help but say early on you are rooting for them but they both have to deal with so much emotionally to get to their happily ever after - however , I found their journey so inspiring as it gives one hope.

What I loved about this book :

Age gap
Opposites seemingly attract as City Girl meets Cabin Man
Characters dealing with real life issues
Funny situations and laugh out loud dialog
Sizzling Chemistry
Beautiful settling
Great secondary characters
A heroine that speaks her truth even when difficult
Recovery

Shadowed Hearts is so emotionally intense but with such a hopeful message.

Incredible read !

Shadowed Hearts is the second novel in Broken Hearts series. It is a standalone, and can be read standalone without confusion, but for some spoiler purposes of Naked Hearts, it is recommended that you read Naked Hearts prior to.

Shadowed Hearts is a grumpy/grumpy, mountain man, trauma healing, forced proximity, age gap with survival elements romance.
Mignon and Foxx have both had experiences in their life that have left them feeling undeserving of love and angry at the world. Fate brings them together. The chemistry between Mignon and Foxx is immediately felt...though both try to fight it. The tension and angst pour from the pages. And when they finally give in...Oh..M...Goodness it is HOTTTTT!!!! Foxx is unbelievably sexy and alpha...and Mignon begins to find herself again while with him.

Shadowed Hearts is a story of healing. There are elements of PTSD. There are a few elements that require some trigger warnings. It is a story of recovery from traumatic events and finding yourself again. It is a story of learning that you deserve to love and be loved. That your past and actions don't always define who you are now.

I highly recommend reading this story!!!

There's nothing like a book that leaves you completely speechless after finishing it.
It sort of washes over you and leaves you completely breathless.

".. the strength to feel our pain is the bravest thing of all, capable of erasing the darkest of shadows in our broken souls." Valentina - Shadowed Hearts

Valentina is brilliant when it comes to writing emotion and this one is proof of it. It is one of the most emotional books I've read.
Be prepared to be moved and reach for the tissues!

A powerful, intense and beautiful story of loss, love, and finding your way. Despite surviving dark pasts, two grieving people meet and along the way, fall in love and get that chance neither of them thought they would find. The beating grip of every emotion that Mignon and Wofe face will have your heart breaking and then mending throughout until the very last word. Honestly, I love a story that will leave you so affected after reading that you can’t adjust to real life right away. This novel had me inside out and up and down. I couldn’t put it down.

After reading Lorenzo and Arie's story in Naked Hearts, I couldn't wait to read more books by this author, specifically Mignon's story, so I was excited to read this one.

Mignon and Foxx had instant chemistry, even though they were enemies at first sight, so I loved their sarcastic banter. I also loved the natural progression of their relationship, which made the story so believable. Now I'm really looking forward to the enemies to lovers story of Fiona and Harry. In the meantime, this one is highly recommended!

Shadowed Hearts is the emotional and steamy story of Mignon and Foxx (excellent Hero name btw) and their tumultuous story of life, loss, trauma and love. This one has a few triggers but so worth it if you can get past them. Beautifully written and touching on both social and emotional issues, this story takes you on a ride! Can’t wait for more from this group of friends!

Valentina did it again! She is quickly climbing the ladder to be one of my very favorite artists with these precious gems that she is writing. This story is the second in the Broken Hearts series.

Migs, a very broken young lady who has been through a great deal of trauma this past year and is trying to move on from her troubled past but she is truly drowning in those shadows. When she is pressured by her mom and friends that it’s time to get help or move on, she flips and decides to go away for as long as she needs to to find herself again. The woods, isolation, nature, that’s what she needs.

When she finds herself in trouble during a nasty storm, she stumbles upon an empty cabin, at least empty at that time. When she comes across a very handsome rugged and rude man who clearly prefers to be alone as does she, she becomes extremely defensive. When their paths keep crossing, they both question fate because the attraction is so alive. Can they ignore this undeniable attraction and continue to try to conquer their demons on their own or will they be exactly what the other needs to heal?

You won’t want to miss this masterpiece of a story! It’s filled with emotion, steaminess and healing. You can’t help but feel that you are living this story right alongside the characters. This author has a gift and we should be honored that she chooses to share it with us.

I received this as an ARC

After Naked Hearts I couldn’t wait to read Mignons’ story. This didn’t disappoint. After everything came to light in the first book, she has been left so angry and broken.

She decides to leave her family and friends (with some insistence from them) and take a trip into the woods of Washington to try and find herself again. Unfortunately, with a bit of poor planning, she ends up camping during two different terrible storms. She comes in contact with a Foxx, a man living happily alone in the woods. He is fighting his own battles and just wants solitude, but with the storm they are forced to get through it together. Quickly, their undeniable chemistry becomes something they can’t resist.

Once again, this is a wonderful story of overcoming trauma and struggles, finding yourself afterwards and getting your life back.

I love how real the healing has been in this series. It’s not sugarcoated, there’s back and forth, setbacks and wins along the way.

You don’t need to read Naked Hearts first, but I highly recommend it.

-Age Gap (25/ 39)
-Forced Proximity
-Grumpy/Grumpy
-Rugged Mountian Man

Shadowed Heart is the second book and the Broken Hearts series by Valentina.
Mignon goes on a trip to try and find healing from past trauma. When a rainstorm comes through the area where she is camping and rips her tent apart she is forced to find other shelter. After trekking through the forest for some time she stumbles upon an empty cabin.
Foxx has returned home for the first time in two years and is staying in his cabin before having to face his family. After finding a strange woman in his cabin in the middle of a rainstorm he offers to let her stay in his camper so that she is not staying in his cabin.
During a blizzard about a week after Mignon and Foxx met they end up stranded in his camper together until the snow stops. Can they learn to trust one another and open up about their pasts to move forward together?
Valentina has done it again making me feel all the emotions while reading Shadowed Hearts. Be prepared to have tissues on hand!

I was given this as an advanced copy for a honest opinion.

Events in life sometimes cause emotional damage to our souls. The words in this book speak it.

If you read book one then you know book two was going to be just as emotional. We have Mig and Foxx in this book who have had traumatic things happen to them and it literally splits their souls in half. Then on top of that they have no way of knowing how to heal. These two fight their battles silently all while crying in their pillows at night. I wanted to hold them and tell them it would be okay. I wanted to wipe their tears. I wanted to shake their parents. I wanted to just piece them back together.

From the first page to the last page we watch them struggle, heal, and fall in love. This was not an easy read. This is a hold your babies closer type of read.

Remember at the end of this book there is certain numbers in case you need to use them.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for a honest review.

I read book one first to fully understand the characters and story line. I’m so glad I did!!

This book will knock you on you booty!! One chapter you are frustrated, then your crying or laughing, and finally all hot and bothered.

Valentina did an amazing job of writing this book. A story of recovery and finding love in the middle of it all.

I fell in love with Foxx and Migs as soon as they were introduced. This is such a beautiful story of love and how it can help overcome the worst of people’s experiences, while making them better people and better partners for each other. The trauma suffered by both MC’s is significant but their love and support for each other as the story evolves is amazing.
I cried, bled and laughed right along with them. Forced proximity is one of my favourite tropes and Valentina nailed it with Shadowed Hearts.
This is a top read of 2022 so far for me.

Oh. My. God. Valentina, you have a way with words and writing that makes me sob.
I have no words. What a book this is! I sobbed both sad and happy tears whilst reading.
Migs is so bad arse, fiesty, sassy and fierce. I bloody adore her. And Foxx....🥵🥵🥵 what a man! I actually lovee him! The angst, the push and pull was the best build up ever. Jesus christ, the chemistry that these 2 had was intoxicating. In the best way of course.
The British wording. Mum and arse. And tiny willy!! You killed it! 😂
The tension in the kitchen scene when she tries to make coffee....🔥🔥🔥

Valentina has done it again!

If you like a good romance that gives you some enemy to lovers vibe that has heartache, sadness and a happy ending then this is for you!

Mignon is trying to heal from the trauma she faced with Salvatore, she struggles with rage and needs to take some time to herself to heal. So she decides to take a mini break and disappear into the woods.

Not realizing that she has chosen the worst time of year to camp in Washington state she ends up in all sorts of trouble and then she meets Foxx

Foxx just returning after two years away just wants peace and quiet and then he sees her…..

From then on out it’s a battle of wills until they both give in and fall head over heels in love.

You just need to read this!

What an amazing, heart-wrenching and emotionally charged journey this phenomenal author takes us on. She give us two broken and damaged characters that just want to move past their trauma and live their lives happily. But sometimes healing from such painful tragedies is not as simple as just moving on. There needs to be some extensive healing first and both Mignon and Foxx take us on their whirlwind journey of grief, pain, healing and hopefully finding the love they both deserve.

This is a beautifully written story that will have you captivated and enthralled by the profound words the author uses to describe the pain and anguish both Mignon and Foxx are going through. Their story is not an easy one to read at times. They had me laughing and gushing with love over this amazing and crazy connection that they have forged and then crying uncontrollably over the intense grief and uncontrollable pain that both of them hold deeply in their hearts. Their journey was a beautiful one to witness!

Filled with beautiful poignant words, phenomenal characters who you just can’t help but fall in love with deeply and packed with so many emotional ups and downs that your heart will break and then it will soar with love.

I absolutely loved this story. At times the pain and grief the characters went through hit me hard and brought me back to times when grief was my enemy too! Words have never spoken so deeply to me as when I read this:

“Grief,” she said, “is carnivorous. It feeds whether you’re awake or not, whether you fight it or you don’t. Much like cancer. And one morning you wake up and all those other emotions – joy, envy, greed, even love – are swallowed by it. And you’re alone with grief, naked to it. And it owns you.” - Denis Lehane, Sacred

Shadowed Hearts picks up where Naked Hearts left off, but from Mignon's point of view. There is a brief recap of what happened to her in Naked Hearts. If you haven't read Naked Hearts yet, go do it. Mignon is dealing with the fallout of what happened to her, and the revelations that came to light. You think you know someone, and then they turn out to be a completely different person. Wanting to get away from it all, she decides to take a trip to find herself. And she does, along with a sexy mountain man named Foxx. It turns out Foxx has his own demons he needs to work past. Together, they find their way through tough times. And can we talk about the spice?! Mignon and Foxx are perfect together, even if it takes some time for them to realize it.

Brief summary
Mignon needs a break from her life, so she takes a trip to the wilderness. There she meets Foxx they don’t start on the right foot but they get to know each other and they fall in love.

I don’t think I can describe what reading this book did to me because I’m pretty much an emotional mess after reading this one. This book was just such an experience for me, but one I’m really glad I had. I only got this emotional because the book made me care about Foxx and Mignon so much and I just kept feeling for them.

I absolutely adored every interaction between Mignon and Foxx. I loved how they started on the wrong foot and weren’t the nicest to each other but they still kept gravitating toward each other. And then the more they talked the more they enjoyed the other’s company and the more I could see how well suited for each other they are. I loved their banter so much, all of their conversations were just so much fun to read. And I loved how they got to know each other and slowly fell in love with each other. Their relationship was just so sweet and it really worked for me.

I really enjoyed how even if it was harder for them to open up because they both had trauma. And I liked how messy that was sometimes because at least they tried and that really worked for me.

I also adored Mignon and Foxx so much. Mignon was such a strong character and I just adore her. I just would love to be her friend, so much. And Foxx was such a great character too. I loved how protective he was and all of the little things that made him Foxx. His character just really worked for me.

I don’t think I can say enough good words about the way that this book showed trauma. This book had some of the best representations of trauma I have ever read in a book. I loved how this book showed trauma and everything that comes with it. I loved how this book never shied away from showing what it is to be living with trauma. And mostly, I loved how this book talked a lot about therapy being a good tool in these situations, that definitely was something I really appreciated.

While trying to find herself surrounded by nature to try and heal her betrayed heart, Mingnon decides to go on a camping trip. That night a heavy rain storm causes her to search for shelter and comes across an empty cabin. One that belongs to a broody, angry and very s€xy man. After an argument with said man, Migs ends up shooting an arrow at him and leaving in search of shelter. Not realizing that it wont be the last time she crosses paths with said man. One who will challenge her yet teach her how to trust, love, and be vulnerable once again, allwong the anger to leave her heart.

Foxx is a man who has spent the last two years away from his family and the town of Spirit Bear. Having decided to return to he cant help but continue blaming himself for an event that changed him and his family forever, and continue believing he is underserving of love. But the moment he meets Mignon, he can't help but make sure shes safe. Having no clue he has met his perfect match, he will be challenged by Migs at every turn, and learn to open his heart to forgiveness and love.

This book will break your heart and put it back together. Please make sure to check the trigger warnings (shooting, grief, victim blaming, PTSD, anxiety, survivors guilt, etc.). I lost count of how many times I cried reading Foxx's and Mignon's book. The way Foxx allowed himself to be vulnerable yet believed to not be worthy of his City Girl, broke my heart. Yet how willing he was to work on his issues and trauma, proved just how much he loved Mignon. How strong Migs was and her willingness to wait for her Cabin Man proved just how much love she had for him. This has now become a book I wish to be able to read for the first time again.

Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆      Heat: 🌶🌶🌶

Angst: 💣💣💣      Plot: 📚📚📚📚📚

Cliffhanger: ❌️

Do I recommend? ✅️ but you should really read Naked Hearts first to get the full experience.

Trigger Warnings: ☠️

Tropes: Age Gap, Forced Proximity, Survival/stranded romance, Tortured MC's, Alpha mountain man, Strong Heroine

This author is seriously causing some damage to my heart. This book was just as beautiful, real and poignant as the first. They leave me with no doubts that Mrs. Valentina is a creative master.

This story occurs one year after the events in the first book. Mignon is struggling to move on after being hurt in ways she never thought possible. All she seems to feel is anger. I related so much to her character. This author's characters are created in a way that I felt myself with them throughout the story. They were my friends. She decides maybe going out into nature might help her reset but she knows nothing about camping. She's certainly not prepared for the storm that crashes upon her. When she searches for shelter, she ends up in Foxx's cabin. Both of them feel broken by their pasts. I loved their journey to their HEA. This was another emotional, heartbreaking romance but also inspirational when they learn to really live again. Mignon and Foxx are an equation of happiness that fate brought together,if they can trust it and each other. Be prepared with tissues. I fed on the angst and heat which was euphoric. I will definitely be reading all future works by this author. This is my honest opinion, freely given.

Mignon and Foxx’s story was one for the ages!! It was incredibly raw and real. Everyone deals with trauma differently and I love how Valentina portrayed the struggles of trauma, treatment and recovery.

Mignon is at a crossroads. She needs to get over a traumatic event that happened a year ago so she decides to go camping and have some time with nature. When a storm hits and her tent get ruined, she finds a remote cabin. The owner of the cabin is grumpy Foxx.

They end of up being trapped in this storm and have to get to know each other and learn to get along. Their forced proximity brings about new feelings that they can’t deny.

But they both have secrets and past trauma. Can they deal with the trauma and move on? Or will the guilt and fear consume them?
