UNIT: Brave New World 1: Seabird One

Rate this book
The Cold War is over, the Millennium is fast approaching, and Brigadier Winifred Bambera is the new head of UNIT.

But in this shadowy, unpredictable world of deadly threats and hidden enemies, Bambera and her new team - Sergeant Jean-Paul Savarin and Dr Louise Rix - will need to prove their mettle. The stakes are higher than ever.

1.1 Rogue State by Robert Valentine
In the war-torn republic of Valge Maja, Brigadier Bambera is hot on the trail of arms-dealing terrorist, Roman Krojač, when she’s ordered back to Geneva. Her old sponsor, Dame Lydia Kingsley, offers her a job as the new head of UNIT. Reluctant to accept, she nevertheless teams up with sarcastic UNIT officer Sergeant Jean-Paul Savarin to prevent a monstrous Soviet-era weapon from falling into Krojač’s hands.

1.2 Time Flies by Alison Winter
Bambera and Savarin are summoned to a secretive genetic research facility by Dr Louise Rix, UNIT’s rebellious new scientific adviser. Two scientists have vanished in mysterious circumstances, and despite the assurances of the sinister Dr Grange, UNIT suspects there’s something very wrong with the centre’s caterpillar population. Can they survive the fruits of Dr Grange’s experiments? And will Savarin survive Bambera and Rix’s rocky new relationship?

1.3 Dark Side of the Moon by Alfie Shaw
A new British space station, the Britannia, is due to be launched at the end of the week, but Bambera, Rix and Savarin fear that some kind of psychic entity is trying to sabotage it. Is it really the spirit of Helena McNamara, deceased astronaut and old friend of Rix? And does it speak the truth when it warns that something terrible is waiting for humanity on the dark side of the moon?

Set during what is known among Whovians as The Wilderness Years. That period of time after the end of the classic Doctor Who series in 1989 and before the launch of the new series in 2005.

1.1 Rogue State - I was a little hesitant to pick this one up. I probably should have stuck with my initial instinct. There’s nothing really wrong here. It’s well produced and the actors all delivery excellent performances. But what I was left with was that the story was just another generic UNIT story. It just doesn’t feel very inspired, hopefully later stories will be better (2/5).

1.2 Time Flies - OH! Much Better! Loved this one! Hopefully, the previous episode was just an anomaly and was trying too hard to set things up. Still, this does fall in a kind of pattern that is easily seen as a structural template that Big Finish uses. But it was still wonderfully executed and had some wonderful twists (4/5).

1.3 Dark Side of the Moon - Another good one, although it didn’t top the previous one. This one continues to build on the Earth timeline from the pre-Time-War reality that the UK had a prominent space program (always fun). Very entertaining and lots of fun body-swapping shenanigans (3/5).

Overall, this was a nice set with some good stuff, even if it started off rather rough.

Generous four stars.

You know, that was actually pretty good. The middle episode is the weakest, and being the one that introduces regular character Louise Rix, it's a shame that her most prominent character attribute in her debut is "deliverer of exposition and technobabble." She's much better in the final episode. Both she and Jean-Paul Savarin prove to be likeable and engaging characters in the end. They even flirt a little, which is actually welcome. Bambera is shouty through most of these three episodes, but she's not off-putting, so . . . we'll go with it.

The task, I imagine, in creating this series about 1990s-era UNIT is how to distinguish it from the other UNIT series, and if I had to guess, it appears that this one's going to focus on more the "weird" (think X-Files) as opposed to the Sci Fi stuff that features in the New UNIT series. Here we've got Siberian monsters, genetically manipulated bugs, and a "moon ghost."

The "moon ghost" episode is particularly good as it suggests that there's a long story arc being developed, and that always increases my interest in a series.

Just ok. If it were very on sale, I would be interested in the next installment to see if it finds its legs, but I am not in a hurry.
