After leaving art college in ’97, I spent nearly 10 years as a political cartoonist for The Western Morning News before going freelance.
I’ve been published both as a writer and an illustrator for a number of publishers, had my books translated across Europe and South America. Apart from publishing, I’ve also spent time script writer and a character designer for several animation channels.
I live in Devon, spend most of my days drinking tea and dreaming up new stories.

This is such a funny story and I just love what happens to this family! The Goodfellows from Tunbridge Wells , a typical British family, decide to celebrate their daughter, Camilla’s recent success at collecting every award possible at her school, with dinner at a restaurant. When there’s a mix up at the restaurant they wanted to go to, they end up at a gangster pizza place instead where Michael, the youngest member of the Goodfellows wins a trip to New York for the whole family, a gangster themed trip. Meanwhile a mafia boss has hired a bunch of goodfellas to do an important robbery for him, but when the Goodfellows arrive in New York they are mistaken for the goodfellas with hilarious consequences.
This is such a fun story and I enjoyed it from the first page. The Goodfellow family are an interesting bunch with mum dad and older sister Camilla all seeming to be perfect and Michael, the youngest of the family seeming to be a bit of a black sheep as he spends most of his free time watching tv or playing videogames instead of winning awards like his sister. But as the family ends up getting mistaken for the goodfellas and are taken to the scene where they’re told to commit a robbery, I like how it’s Michael who ends up taking the lead with how to deal with gangsters.
The story really is just so funny and silly with the family ending up in a lot of trouble. As they try to escape the situation there’s a hilarious chase and I just love how every member of the family ends up contributing somehow to help their adventure to get away. The ending is so funny and I especially love the last page which shows an interesting twist with how the Goodfellows end up. The whole story is just so hilarious that I found myself repeatedly laughing out loud as I read this!
There are illustrations dotted throughout the book on some pages and I love how funny everything looks. The expressions on the characters and how the different characters all look is so hilarious. I do love Tom McLaughlin’s illustrations and stories already and after reading quite a few of his books they never fail to make me smile and laugh. The pictures make the story even more fun than the words alone, and I just love how everyone ends up looking including Mr Hersh and that last page made me smile, especially with what is happening to that waiter!
The book is printed on thick yellow/cream coloured paper and all of the text is extra easy to read, with a special font used and every paragraph spaced out from others which makes this book easier for dyslexics to read as well as anyone who struggles with regular print in books. The book is only about 100 pages long too which also makes it a good book for reluctant readers who find longer books daunting to read.
This really has been a great book and possibly my favourite Tom McLaughlin book to date! The mix up with the goodfellas is just so hilarious and leads to a whole silly adventure with so many laugh out loud moments! It’s definitely a story which will make anyone laugh and one I’d recommend just for how funny and silly it is.

Loved this fun, fast paced action packed mafia adventure. Another great Barrington Stokes read.
