மன்னராட்சிக்காலத்தில் வெட்டப்பட்ட பலநூறு சுரங்கவழிகள் நம் கால்களுக்கு அடியில் இன்றும் புதைந்துள்ளன. அவை தூர்ந்துவிட்டிருக்கலாம். அல்லது ரகசிய அறைகளாக அங்கே இருந்துகொண்டும் இருக்கலாம். அங்கே நாமறியாத உயிர்கள் வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கலாம். அல்லது வெறுமையும் இருளும் நிறைந்திருக்கலாம். அந்த எண்ணம் என்னை தூண்ட உடனே எழுத ஆரம்பித்த கதை இது.
இந்தக்கதை நம்முள் உள்ள, நாம் மட்டுமே அறிந்த குகைவழிகளைப் பற்றியது.

About the author

B. Jeyamohan (also credited as Jayamohan) is one of the most influential contemporary, Tamil and Malayalam writer and literary critic from Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

He entered the world of Tamil literature in the 1990s, Jeyamohan has had impacted the Tamil literary landscape as it emerged from the post-modern phase. His best-known and critically acclaimed work is Vishnupuram, a deeply layered fantasy set as a quest through various schools of Indian philosophy and mythology. His other well-known novels include Rubber, Pin Thodarum Nizhalin Kural, Kanyakumari, Kaadu, Pani Manithan, Eazhaam Ulagam, and Kotravai. His writing is heavily influenced by the works of humanitarian thinkers Leo Tolstoy and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Drawing on the strength of his life experiences and extensive travel around India, Jeyamohan is able to re-examine and interpret the essence of India's rich literary and classical traditions.

தந்தை பெயர் எஸ்.பாகுலேயன் பிள்ளை. தாத்தா பெயர் வயக்கவீட்டு சங்கரப்பிள்ளை. பூர்வீக ஊர் குமரிமாவட்டம் விளவங்கோடு வட்டம், திருவரம்பு. தாத்தா அடிமுறை ஆசான். ஆகவே சங்கு ஆசான் என அழைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறார். அப்பாவின் அம்மா பெயர் லட்சுமிக்குட்டி அம்மா. அவரது சொந்த ஊர் குமரிமாவட்டம் விளவங்கோடு வட்டம், திருவட்டாறு. அப்பாவுடன் பிறந்தவர்கள் இருவர். தம்பி எஸ்.சுதர்சனன் நாயர் தமிழக அரசுத்துறையில் வட்டார வளர்ச்சி அலுவலராக இருந்து ஓய்வுபெற்று இப்போது பத்மநாபபுரத்தில் வசிக்கிறார். அப்பாவின் தங்கை சரோஜினி அம்மா திருவட்டாறில் ஆதிகேசவ பெருமாள் ஆலய முகப்பில் உள்ள பாட்டியின் பூர்வீகவீட்டிலேயே வாழ்கிறார்.

அப்பா முதலில் வழங்கல் துறையில் வேலைபார்த்தார். பின் பத்திரப்பதிவுத்துறையில் எழுத்தராக வேலைபார்த்து ஓய்வு பெற்றார். அவரது பணிக்காலத்தில் பெரும்பகுதி அருமனை பத்திரப்பதிவு அலுவலகத்தில் கழிந்தது. 1984ல் தன் அறுபத்தி ஒன்றாம் வயதில் தற்கொலை செய்துகொண்டார்.

A very intriguing story about a mentally ill man discovering a huge tunnel under his house. We are not given any details about his illness. He mentions in passing that he got lost during his childhood and roamed the city for a couple of days before being discovered. Then there is a scene with his doctor that is telling in its commentary on the power imbalance between a doctor and patient especially with regard to psychiatric treatment as well as the imbalance in power between the nurses and the doctors! There are two scenarios that is possible in this story. One is, the narrator is actually schizophrenic and imagines the whole of the tunnel. Second is, the narrator is ill but the tunnel is anyways real and because of his illness people are not ready to accept his story. I am leaning towards the schizophrenic theory. This is based on the random British people who roam the tunnels. Also I think the narrator does research about the tunnels and they exist but whether he went there daily or whether he was able to memorise the intricate complexities of the tunnel path is a question mark. As to the confrontation between the doctor and the patient I don’t know if he could have actually known about the affair by listening from the tunnel or whether it is the Freud in him that is attributing sexual connotations based on his intuitiveness in meeting the doctor and nurse in his previous visits! Anyways a very engaging story that can have multiple meanings and that ends in a way that is very difficult to understand! I like the story and I recommend it.

2013ல ஆந்திரா, சத்தீஸ்கர், ஒடிசா போன்ற ஊர்களுக்கு ஜெயமோகன் அவர்கள் நண்பர்களோட குகைகளை பாக்குறதுக்காக போய் இருக்காரு. நெறைய குகைகளை பாத்து அதுல வாழ்ந்த மக்களோட வாழ்க்கை முறைகளை தெரிஞ்சுட்டு வந்து இருக்காரு. 2019ல தொலைத்தொடர்புத் துறைல வேல செஞ்சுட்டு இருக்கும்போது தொலைபேசி அமைக்க  தோண்டி இருக்காங்க, அங்க ஒரு குகைய பாத்து இருக்காங்க. இதெல்லாம் வச்சு தான் இந்த குறுநாவல் எழுத பட்டதா முன்னுரைல சொல்லி இருக்காரு.

இந்த கதையோட ஹீரோ தன்னோட அம்மா மற்றும் மனைவியோட ஒரு புது வீட்டுக்கு குடி போறாரு. அவரோட புது அறைக்கு கீழ ஒரு குகைக்கான சுரங்கப்பாதை இருக்குறத கண்டு பிடிக்குறாரு. அதுக்கு அப்புறம் ஹீரோ என்ன பண்ராருன்றது தான் கதை.

ஹீரோ இதுல மனநிலை சரி இல்லாததுக்காக treatment எடுத்துக்குற மாதிரி வருது. ஆனா என்ன பிரச்சனைன்னு சொல்லல. First half வரைக்கும் அந்த சுரங்கப்பாதை ஹீரோவோட கற்பனையோனு தோணும். Second halfல அது கற்பனை இல்ல நிஜம் தான் அப்டின்னு சொல்ற மாதிரி கதை போகும். City முழுக்க connect பண்ற ஒரு சுரங்கப்பாதை. அந்த thought படிக்கவே சூப்பரா இருந்துச்சு. அதை தவிர வேற எதுமே எனக்கு புரியல. Ending சுத்தமா புரியல. ஆசிரியர் என்ன சொல்ல வராருனு புரியாம confuse ஆனது தான் மிச்சம். இதை ஒரு மனநலம் சரியில்லாத ஒருத்தரோட கற்பனைனு எடுத்துகிறதா இல்ல நடந்த சம்பவங்களை ஒழுங்கா connect பண்ணி எனக்கு தான் புரிஞ்சுக்க முடியலையானு தெரியல.

Tunnel

A man who got shifted to the new house finds a tunnel running under his room. He understands that it was built during the British era. The tunnel connects to the entire city to different government offices, houses and hospitals. Meanwhile, the man is also getting treated for some disorders from childhood. No one believes him when he shares his findings. The story makes us doubt whether the tunnel he explains is schizophrenic or real until one incident after which we have to conclude that the tunnel is real.

But I couldn't understand the ending why he suddenly forgets all his discovery after seeing the couple at the end of one of the tunnel

Very unique story

I really loved it. Story based on cave. Writing is excellent. I am not intelligent enough to understand the ending. Who is that woman? But lot of lines are brilliant. Good reading.

விறுவிறுவென முடிந்த கதை. இவை எல்லாம் என்ன என்பதை ஒருவாறு சுலபமாக யூகிக்க முடிந்துவிட்டது. எழுத்தாளர் ஆரம்பத்திலேயே அதற்கான clue கொடுத்துவிட்டார். ஒருமுறை படிக்கலாம்.

1 Star... No light at the end of this cave. Neither informative nor enjoyable.
There's absolutely no connection between what the author says as his inspiration to write this piece and the book itself. The book reading experience made me feel as same as the state of the narrator - Mentally ill !!!
