A debut novel by Vernon Benoit from western Newfoundland and Labrador that combines a love of the outdoors with mystery and intrigue.
A man, fearing that he is going to die the same death as his father and other relatives, sets out in the backcountry of Newfoundland to take his fate into his own hands. The story becomes a survival story, as the main character encounters many obstacles, including dangerous wildlife, trying to outmaneuver the search parties in a cat-and-mouse game. I enjoyed the tension in the narrator's thoughts, as well as the description of his ingenuity in providing himself with food and shelter. For me, it was a gripping story.
