Update 2023 : The story is still going but I am so sorry to say I have lost interest.. like I get that the author has a life and can’t always be writhing, but the updates are so spread, I don’t have the en energy to wait anymore. When there is a new chapter, I do read it, but I am not invested in the story and I can’t wait for the book to end..
It’s crazy to say that because I was OBSESSED with Duplicity like it gave me life back in 2022 but now .. it’s just meh.. sorry Juliez love you girl ♥️

July 28, 2026To be quite frank, if Julez (the author’s pseudonym) isn’t gonna update the damn thing for 9 months, I’m gonna mark it finished. So…yes, the “book” I am reviewing right now is a wattpad original based on Harry Styles. I’ve decided I feel no shame over that since I started it my freshmen year of highschool. This may be book 2, but I’ve dedicated way too much time to this series to not count this bullshit and commemorate its completion and therefore my freedom (chains breaking meme)
TLDR: Duplicity is an over 850k word (longer than the Bible btw) fanfic about one direction but they’re in the mafia and rope in a young photographer named Aven. Fall in love, mafia drama, yada yada. Book two, Complicity is the sequel where now we see Harry and the gang ousted from the mafia and Aven as mafia princess. As silly as it sounds, at one point these used to be good…I think. And it really lost its way, mostly in making a sequel. I wrote a review over a year ago to summarize my feelings of the torrential downpour that is book two to post when it finally ended, and I’m ready to release that press statement and say goodbye to this journey forever.
(From a time when I still reviewed in all lowercase, a thing I thought I would never grow out of. This dates to roughly April/May of 2025)
“i. can’t. even. if you care, go check out the iron flame review, my sentiments are pretty much the same. harry’s a pussy, avens annoying, liam is the best character a lot of the time (the world is backwards), and niall is a lot less hot. no daytona, no hallelujah + smashing piano gate (however that might be a good thing), and zayn is a bot. while an in depth hate on of a one direction fan fiction would be fun, it’s genuinely not worth the time, and julez spent so long writing this i can’t even form connected thoughts on it anymore. this shit sucked, i’m glad im done with this franchise that has bonded me and kacey for the rest of our lives in a way no one else can understand. to commemorate this momentous event, here are some of the most memorable memeable moments from both books:
* “i’m so fucking proud of you”
* aven bashing harry’s ex’s head in in the middle of a coffee shop midday
* aven dangling nova off a building
* the meme of sebastian from the little mermaid with harry hair and a cherry sucker
* aven having a biting men’s ears off kink

* when robbing the museum and being chased by the cops niall shot one of them in the dick

* aven thinking harry’s rubbing her back but it’s quincy in the skeleton costume

It is legit batshit to care and still be wrapped in something like this over 5 years after I got into it, but I cannot overstate how serious this was to me at a time. And it really was good at some point in the first book, at least good enough for my mentally ill brain to cling onto. Now I understand the silliness of a marking a book finished reading when there hasn’t even been an update in this calendar year, but the author stopped updating and disappeared from the map so I think she’s done with it. And if at a later time she updates, in all honestly I’ll probably still read it. #daytonababy

I’m aware that this book is still ongoing, so maybe I’ll update this review whenever new chapters are uploaded. Currently, I’ve finished the book at chapter 43. I’d like to start with saying that my expectations for this book were laying high as people were saying that this book was worse emotionally, which it was not. After Duplicity, I was expecting something that would wreck my heart even worse than the prequel did (which is nearly impossible fyi). I did not shed a tear ONCE while reading this (although chapter 43 got me close) and was slightly disappointed in the fact that it failed to. Still, it was an great follow-up and there were lots of action scenes which made it more intriguing to read on. I could be wrong, but it felt like some timelines didn’t correspond nor overlap with what was earlier mentioned. I do have to be honest, somewhere in the back of my head I knew that nothing could beat Duplicity, but I still believe some improvements could be made. All with all, this series is by far my favorite piece of literature I’ve read.

i enjoyed this. unfortunately i feel like we could have done without a lot of these chapters. the same things & conversations kept happening over & over again. i understand character development doesn’t happen overnight but, 55 chapters. it took 55 chapters to see any kind of movement. & even then, it was one singular thing that brought the character change. i just feel like we could be so much farther progressed to the ending of this story.
i know authors have lives but, it’s been years since this story started. i only just started the series a month or so ago. it came out in 2020. i feel like in almost 5 years the second edition would be completed. no shade to Julez at all but as a consumer & reader, that’s hard to stay engrossed in.
this could very easily be a 4 or 5 star read depending on the ending.

it’s been a couple of days since I finished this book and just, wow. I’ve been thinking about this entire thing every hour since I finished it and I’m already rereading duplicity chapters. Jules so fking talented I can’t even wrap my head around the fact she started all of this at the age of 18. I love this universe so much it pains me I don’t own a physical copy. The things I would be willing to do to read this again for the first time. I need jules to stand on business and finish this book and end my torture

I love it and I was actually so committed to this series cause I felt like twelvie wattpad obsessed me again but there haven’t been any new chapters since Oct 2025 😀 maybe I’ll return one day when it’s actually finished but for now I have to cancel my $9.99 per month subscription cause no updates for 7 months meant I just wasted $70 xxxxx really puts things into perspective for me

This book wrecked me... in a good and bad way. It's been hard to see the changes in each of them and the things they have gone through since Duplicity. I have really loved the book though! The author is great at character development and that has been so fun to see in this setting of the book.

This shit has me in a goddamn chokehold. It’s not even finished yet but I’m so happy with how it’s progressed. Obsessed w these characters and it’s crazy that they’re not real?? Books are always like little movies in my mind but this shit has me actually seeing it it’s crazy. Love it 10/10
