Rate this book
Come one, come all! The Seventh Running of the Kessivan Dungeon is about to begin!

In a matter of days, the Grand Dungeon of Kess will be opened once again for all comers to compete!

Aspirants from all of the races and nations will be in attendance this year. Humans, Dwarves, Elves of all shape and color, Beastkin, Korgan, and even the assorted demi-humans are all here, and among them is a newcomer by the name of Myles Chase, a [Baker] with dreams larger than a rising loaf of leavened bread. He is one of many that are willing to risk it all to change their fates and be counted among the heroes of legend.

Does he have what it takes? Will he survive? Only time, and a little luck, will tell.

As a heads up, this novel is the first e-book of the free web novel series, Apotheosis. You may read the entire ongoing story on Royal Road.

This is a Gamelit/LitRPG novel and includes stat tables, powering up, loot, mimics, and Class systems.

R.J. Triveri is the author of the LitRPG series Incipere Online and Dungeon Core 101. He graduated from university life with a master’s in technology and education. Completing this, he has spent much of his free time writing, gaming, DM’ing for an overzealous paladin and crew that are constantly putting the world at risk, and trying to keep all of his stories straight so they can be written down. He currently is alive and plans on staying that way for at least another sixty-some years. With his wife, his hurricane of a son, and his cantankerous, anxiety-ridden cat, R.J. couldn’t be happier with the way things turned out.

I don't have words to properly describe how much I loved this book. It hit all the right notes for me. It had elements of seriousness, yet had plenty of humor and lightness. It had action, but plenty of what I'd almost dub as "adventuring slice of life"

I'm not a big fan of the cover, nor the blurb. The blurb doesn't really underline how this dungeon run is one that could potentially last for years and death was a high likelihood. That entire previous runs had wiped. It didn't underline that the only way Miles could become something other than a [Baker] was by taking a trial to test his aptitude before the dungeon run. It also didn't mention the fact that the dungeon run would be running on magical television to basically the entire kingdom.

I loved the fact that compared to other litrpg, the incredible bad humor and puns didn't come from the MC himself. (or the system) But was rather something the MC had to suffer through from other people making bad jokes.

It also wasn't such a scramble for survival as I was expecting. The first day was essentially a treasure hunt for Resource Tickets. Tickets that was used to build shelter. Because the dungeon runs have been broadcasted before, they were prepared for this. They knew what region to clear out and where to build their safe zone. And suddenly there it was, day two: A player made village safe from monsters.

My biggest complaint really, is that the author uses tables for his character sheets and they never work well on a Kindle. But, minor spoiler, you go from 3 inputs to 2 toward the end of the book so I hope the next book isn't as bad.

There was also a small snafu where the Monster Lore claims the Rabbit monster are omnivores but heavy preference on a vegetarian diet. But the humanoid rabbit monsterkin that Miles end up taming and adding to his party tells him she only eats vegetarian. So, either the author messed up, or she lied to the MC.

And yes, there's a monstergirl party member. Basically. And there are plenty of jokes being made about it. Even people who make some.. eh underhanded assumptions about it. I'll say that there isn't any hint toward this turning out to become an harem or that there will be an romantic relationship between the two, just plenty of jokes made toward those kind of books.

Myles Chase has adventure in his heart and leaves his life as a [Baker] to enter the seventh running of the Grand Dungeon of Kess. Knowing that his culinary skills alone aren't going to help him win, he tests for a new class and becomes a [Monster Tamer]. Can Myles master his new class and find a party to help him succeed in the dungeon, or will he be but a sweet morsel for a monster to devour on the first level?

This is such a fun first book to an exciting LitRPG series. Myles has a big heart, and I was rooting for him as the underdog right away. I love that he isn't perfect and powerful right out of the gate. Players can't kill other players on the dungeon's first level, but the monsters sure can. Myles has no combat experience, but thankfully his first monster does, and I adore her. There is fantastic world-building and there are several layers with lots going on. The whole cast is great, and my favorites include Lyna and Tail. I can't wait to see where the story takes us.

A bit wacky at times

But an entertaining read. MC has potential and develops slowly. It’s all one long dungeon dive (after some initial development), so the structure is there to increase the difficulty.

Hints of adult-type stuff, but no actual or off-screen activity.

Prose is…messy. Needs copy-editing. Spellcheck is the enemy. (“steaming”/“stemming”; “hopped”/‘hoped’…wildly different words)

I will look for the sequel. I just hope the beta readers (or *somebody*) help to clean it better.

Good

I like to book. I look forward to the next book in the series. I found the world interesting and the characters interesting. I’ll look forward to see what the main character will tame next.

A charming confection of a tale

Mostly well thought out. Charming imperfect characters. Writer will develop into something special. OMW if there are profits plow them into a professional proof reading. The homophones are out of control!

great read

Don’t be mislead by the baker part of the description. This is an entertaining LitRPG, with dungeons and class and skill growth. I enjoyed and am sure will too!

fun if a bit simple

A mix of hunger games, litrpg and monster taming. Fun story. Some typos not a huge amount. I’m gonna get the next one
