Dragonrider Academy #1–7 omnibus

Dragonrider Academy: Season 1

Rate this book
*100,000 words of Dragonrider Adventure!*
Never trust a jock.
That was my first mistake. When Max Green invited me to a night party on the beach, I should have known better. The Resorties are rich kids who can’t see past their own cruelty. When Max and his friends trap me in the water, the only way for me to go is down.
It would have been an ironic death, given that my father drowned in the very same waters. But that’s not what happened. Instead my entire world changed when the Lady of the Lake took me to a new realm, one that had been hidden from me my entire life.

Dragonrider Academy is a secret society I’m not even supposed to know exists. It has knights with talking swords, professors who breathe fire, and a hot guy named Killian who seriously gets on my nerves.
It’s his fault I’m stuck here in the first place. He wants me to be his partner and face all the challenges Dragonrider Academy has to offer. He says we’re fated to be together, that I was the one who called him! Crazy talk.

Or is it?
Whatever secret he’s hiding, I need to get it out of him before I do something stupid… like fall for the bad boy who got me into this mess in the first place.

Enjoy the entire first season of Dragonrider Academy, a 100,000 word Fated Mates collection starring Vivi, a no-nonsense kind of girl who knows what she wants. Unfortunately, what she wants is Killian and she’s not going to like the reason when she finds out why they’re Fated Mates!

In this book you will find:
The complete first season of Dragonrider Academy.
500+ pages of dragons, adventure, and new adult romance.
Realistic teen situations, including drinking, bully attacks, and maybe a few unrealistic events such as wild dragons devouring the realms!
A pet finch that turns out to be a very special ally

Audio Review:
Dragonrider Academy: Season 1: Episodes 1-7 begins build the foundation of this new world this author has created. The world building descriptions and settings are well detailed and vividly. The writing style is entertaining and the characters are compelling and likeable. Brimming with supernatural creatures including angels, descendents of a goddess, dragon shifters, elves, knights, and wyverns. The plot is very entertaining and I like the concept of the connection between the dragonriders, wyverns and their mates. This first season is very entertaining and the epilogue was perfect leading into season 2.

Narrator Vanessa Moyen has a sweet young inflection which works great for ya genre. I love her inflection and enjoy listening to her narrate.

fun and emotional adventure.

the story is unique and utterly addicting. each episode a perfect novella. they're short but it doesn't feel like it's missing anything. Such an interesting adventure. Each episode builds the world and adds beautiful depth to the characters. I enjoyed the wild ride. Can’t wait to see where it goes.

The characters go through struggles and it has such emotional depth. The adventures keep us on the edge of our seat.

I enjoyed this collection, despite the goddamn awful writing. The characters are mostly cardboard cutouts. I know the “Dean” of the Dragon Rider Academy is immortal, the Dwarf who takes care of the wyvern eggs is a dwarf who takes care of wyvern eggs and thinks the place is under-staffed, but that’s about all I could tell you about them. MC’s mate is a meathead protector stereotype, he gave me Edward from Twilight vibes. He’s really got nothing else going on in there.

Despite the cast being as deep as a puddle, I enjoyed the world as a whole. I was invested in the story, and despite the the tear down that follows this, I could see myself continuing with this series if I had the audible credits, or time/funds to follow every series that catches my eyes/ears.

One other instance of “Abdomen” being referred to as “Stomach”. Your stomach is an internal organ, if a character was stabbed in the stomach, or has their hands on their stomach, they’re beyond fucked. Nobody ever refers to a character resting their hands on their lungs instead of their chest, because that would be idiotic and absurd.

That shit is annoying as fuck on its own, but this book takes it to a whole new level of stupid. MC’s mother refers to her “kicking inside my stomach”, which … hear me out on this, THERE’S A FUCKING WORD FOR THAT! It’s WOMB!!! So now we have numerous instances of MC saying in that goddamn, shit-ass first-person narrate-your-life-as-it-happens PoV saying “My stomach flipped.” and I have to constantly guess what the fuck internal organ, or external part of her torso she’s fucking referring to!

Authors: Good fucking god, this shit isn’t complicated. Expand your fucking vocabulary, or hire a competent fucking editor so people don’t have to interpret the meaning of every word you misuse.

The annoying as fuck inconsistencies don’t stop there. The so-called Dragons are revealed to actually be wyverns at some point early on, which proceeds to never be relevant, fucking ever. But they’re constantly interchangibly referred to as wyverns / dragons / wyverns / wyverns / dragons / dragons / dragons / wyverns. Yet again, if there’s supposed to be any differences between the two in the lore of this series, that shit got flushed down the toilet. At one point, MC’s dragon is disguised to look like a finch and the inconsistent as fuck writing constantly goes back and forth, referring to her as him / her / him / her. Again, hire a fucking editor, get some goddamn beta readers, proof read this shit. Do literally anything beyond shitting out a first draft, and calling it a day and hitting “publish”.

As for the narration…. it too was pretty goddamn bad. To start off with, as I have to say far too often, “O” isn’t a fucking number. If you’re being paid to narrate a book, stop being fucking lazy and do it right. Most of the male voices sound like the same person, it’s difficult to tell who the hell is supposed to be talking based on that.

For some reason, the narrator would often talk quieter when a character is supposed to be yelling, instead of … I don’t know, actually yelling, or at the very least, raising her voice to match the scene. I left the following note, which perfectly sums up how I felt the entire time listening to that shit. “You can come in now,” she said, raising her voice. While not raising her voice at all.

At the end of story 4, a scene plays out, and then at the beginning of chapter 5, the exact same scene played out. I was fading in and out of conciousness while listening to 4, so I thought I was losing my shit and lost track of where I was, when I had to listen to it again. It was half-appreciated, ’cause it refreshed my memory on what I’d missed, but was still jarring. I didn’t listen to both to see if it was the same recording or not, but I did notice yet another example of the shitty narration because of it.

MC and her mate have this back and forth exchange, where she mocks him for not knowing things he couldn’t possibly know about the human world, and he retorts with “I didn’t make fun of you for wearing underwear.” For context, she spawns in the Dragon Rider world in a bikini or “bathing suit”, but the lack of inflection and/or the writing doesn’t imply he wasn’t making fun of her for being only in her underwear, it made it sound like the idea of wearing it in general is absurd to him.

The main character’s voice was about average, overall. The scene setting wasn’t great, and was servicable at best. The lack of vocal inflections, and garbage male character voices detracted greatly from the overall experience.

🐉🔥 Overall: 🐉🔥

An epic read set in a fun, addictive world that I love getting lost in. Episodes 1-7 could be read individually before now, but the complete boxset just came out and it includes a new, bonus prequel!
The prequel was a quick, fun read and gave some insight into Vivi’s past.

I’d already read episodes 1-5, but thought it’d be fun to binge on the whole thing and … I was right. Try it! It flows perfectly and was even better than the first time around. I breezed right through this entire nearly 10-hour set in one sitting. 4 stars. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Individual reviews:

🐉🔥 Episode 1:

Amazing read, couldn’t put it down. If this was to serve as in introduction to what’s to come, it’s very well done. While short, there is still plenty of great writing and world-building to appreciate and it promises lots of drama and action on the horizon.

Eagerly awaiting episode 2.

5 stars
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🐉🔥 Episode 2:

A quick listen (with the absolute best narrator) and about an hour well spent. Thanks to this fun world, I did not see my neighborhood on my walk last night, but instead I saw Dragonrider Academy and everything Vivian and Killian got up to.

Excellent writing and world-building made for a super fun episode and a need to read on immediately.

4 stars.
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

🐉🔥 Episode 3:

Epic listen; needed it as soon as I finished episode 2 and this one left me absolutely needing episode 4. Things are heating up in this world and I am completely here for it. The world-building is on point and the writing is great! Cannot wait to see what happens next.

4 stars.
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

🐉🔥 Episode. 4:

In this installment we get more of Vivian’s background along with the usual dose of action and some drama. I’m officially going to call it: this whole series gets better with each episode. Absolutely dying to see what’s to come!

4.5 stars.
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

*I strongly recommend reading this from the beginning, in order.

Note:
I listened to the audiobook; 5-star performance. This narrator is perfect!

🐉🔥 Episode 5:

Stars out, not just where 4 left off, but as an actual repeat of ep. 4. However it was still super fun.:) After just a few minutes, we’re treated to some more drama …

We get to see the extent of certain parties’ corruption in this one and … it’s juicy. It’s also brilliantly written and exciting and packs gorgeous, vivid descriptions and epic world-building.

Still completely fast-paced and intriguing.

4 stars.
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

🐉🔥Episode 6:

“Dragons have a funny way of altering someone’s destiny.”
Continues right where Ep. 5 left off and maintains the fast pace and exciting world-building. Things are really heating up here and they’ve got some important decisions to make.

Ends on a wicked cliffhanger in an intense moment. Definitely recommend being ready with a copy of #7 nearby or loaded onto your device when you start this one!

4 stars.
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

🐉🔥 Episode 7:

SO much fun and brilliantly executed as things work out … or at least seem to (no spoilers) and while it doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, I absolutely want more. Dying for Season 2! Very well played.

4 stars overall.

I enjoyed this one. It was full of bonding, trust, magic and dragons. I found it to be well written and a great plot. There were some very interesting characters and it kept me turning pages.
Vivian had always been different from other kids and had a hard time making friends. After her father drowned, things had been tough for herself and her mom. So when Max Green invited Vivian to his party she thought maybe her luck had changed. She thought Max was cute and looked forward to it. Once at the party, things changed. She was led into the water & attacked. Max & his friends thought Vivian could give them answers about the financial trouble his Dad was in since her mom was their accountant. Desperate to escape, Vivian dove deep into the water. When she woke up on the beach, she was at Dragon Rider Academy. She saw dragons thriving with their riders and a whole new world opened up to her. She met her mate, Killian and his dragon and began to form their bond. I loved the baby dragons in this one, so cute. Then she began the task of trying to bond with her egg. The egg that spoke to her was said to have no soul and therefor dead but Vivian wouldn't give up. She loved the egg & the dragon inside but trying to get it to hatch was draining her & Killian. One day she did manage to call the soul back and Solstice hatched. From that moment on Vivian promised to be the best Dragon mom ever. Now the group had to face the threat of the evil wild dragons. Vivian had to learn how to use her powers fast & work together with Solstice if they were to hace any chance at defeating the wild dragons.
A great story with plenty of action.

This review is for the Audible version of this book.

This is a really interesting concept. I love when authors don't limit themselves on choice of paranormal species. here there are angels, descendents of a goddess, dragon shifters, elves, knights, and wyverns and probably more. The connection the dragonriders have with their wyverns and their mates is really quite adorable. Vivi and Killian's relationship has it's ups and downs, but they have pretty good chemistry. I wish the relationships were expounded a little bit more. A lot of the plot revolves around strong emotion but there are few moments where that emotion is allowed to really develop. That's my one complaint. Overall, it is very entertaining.

This narrator is not my favorite. She doesn't have a lot of depth to her voice and makes the MC sound a bit like an air head. I am very particular about voices, though, so this may not bother many others. I have found myself unable to finish books read by her in the past. Luckily the story line, and frankly the dragons, kept me engaged.

This is the first time I have encountered AJ Flowers and I must admit, I really liked this series of books. And I was pleased to hear at the end that she’s planning a Season 2 - YAY.

The characters are well thought out as is the storyline. The episodes may be short, but they pack in a lot.

As well as dragons and dragon riders, we have other species too - goddesses, angels, elves, shifters, knights etc. There are different realms and bad dragons.

Vivi and her bonded mate Killian don’t always get on, but they do make a good team with their wyverns.

Overall, a really good story. It is marketed as YA, but I’m a young 52 and really enjoyed listening to it.

Vanessa Moyan was great at the narration, she’s one of a very small group of narrators whom I don’t have to crank up the speed as she narrates at a normal pace rather slower like most narrators. She has a lot of depth and feeling in her narration too which helps bring the story to life.

This first season is the perfect mix of adventure, new adult romance, and some seriously awesome world-building. You’ll be on the edge of your seat!

🎧 And the narration by Vanessa Moyen? She absolutely crushed it! She brought Vivi's no-nonsense attitude to life perfectly and made the entire adventure so immersive. Her performance was so engaging and made this audiobook an absolute joy to listen to. 🤩

If you're craving an adventurous fantasy with a feisty heroine, dragons, and a romance that will leave you breathless, "Dragonrider Academy" is a must-listen. I'm already counting down the minutes until I can dive into the next season!

Tropes: Dragon Riders, Fated Mates, Enemies-to-Lovers, Magic Academy, Found Family, Grumpy/Sunshine vibes.

4🌟 — Action-packed and utterly addictive!

This is a really interesting series
Set up as episodes that in audio span about 40 minutes each.

Really easy to listen too and how it’s set up let’s the reader/listener can leave and come back after each episode.

I found it quite fast passed and season one spans over mainly a three year period.

Vivi starts off about 9 years old and I think by the end of season one she’s about 18.

She meets her dragon and her fated mate but this series is definitely very YA.

I enjoyed the narration I believe Vanessa is a great voice actor and does a good job.

Vivi is a dragon rider and also has goddess blood giving her great powers.

I’m looking forward to season two with Vivi in the hunt for the other dragon queens

This was my first experience with A. J. Flowers' work, and it was an entertaining ride. I enjoyed the book and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. The world building was awesome. The characters were complex and relatable. The plot had some twists and turns and plenty of action. The descriptions about the interactions between the dragons and the dragon-riders were diverting and the fight scenes were thrilling. I recommend this book to others who enjoy this genre. Vanessa Moyen's narration was great, and she kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.

This is a superb series. When Vivi is nearly drowned at the lake by rich boy Max, she suddenly finds herself at Dragonrider academy, and so begins her destiny as part goddess, part dragonrider, with her fated mate Killion and her golden dragon she battles for survival against the wild dragons. Great characters, great storyline, great dragons what's not to love. A J Flowers has created an inventive world and a great storyline. Love the relationship between the characters and dragons. Vanessa Moyen is the perfect narrator for this series getting the voices right for the age of the characters. I received a complimentary copy and am leaving a honest voluntary review

3,75 fast stars for Vivi and Kilian

I have just read the blurb after I have read the book. It's exactly what you will get with that book. I got a good view on Vivi and her life on earth. But why would she take the invitation? I did not get any good view on Kilian and the fated part of the mating. There are very much sweet or cute details and then it's just a bit too fast to fall into the story. But I love the little dragon and will discover some more of the story.

I am so glad this was more than just one book. I really enjoyed each story and getting to know more about this world and these characters. There were a lot of situations that made me laugh and a few that frustrated me a lot. The side characters were so much fun and I really loved the dragons! Definitely glad I got to listen to this new to me author and get to know this world.

"𝒩𝑒𝓋𝑒𝓇 𝓉𝓇𝓊𝓈𝓉 𝒶 𝒿𝑜𝒸𝓀. 𝒯𝒽𝒶𝓉 𝓌𝒶𝓈 𝓂𝓎 𝒻𝒾𝓇𝓈𝓉 𝓂𝒾𝓈𝓉𝒶𝓀𝑒."
Okay so first of all, the book was quite a nice and easy to read book, and considering its "7 episodes" it was fairly short. The plot was interesting because it was almost like the FMC was finding her "true" self. I also did enjoy the romance side plot however there could have been more romance to it. I felt like we didnt see alot of the relationship in the book and there was alot of focus on action and the past.

There were quotes like:
"𝐼 𝒸𝒶𝓃𝓉 𝒽𝒶𝓋𝑒 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝓇𝓊𝓃𝓃𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝑜𝒻𝒻, 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝒶𝒻𝓉𝑒𝓇 𝐼'𝓋𝑒 𝒻𝒾𝓃𝒶𝓁𝓁𝓎 𝒻𝑜𝓊𝓃𝒹 𝓎𝑜𝓊."
Which I thought was sweet and I really did enjoy those glimpses of romance. I probably wont read the "season 2" if there is one but I would say its worth a shot to read this if you like a book thats more action based and has little romance.
