I was born in Teesside but now live in Scarborough on the stunning North Yorkshire Coast. My home inspired the creation of the fictional seaside town of Whitsborough Bay where I set many of my books although the Hedgehog Hollow series takes readers to a gorgeous new countryside setting in the Yorkshire Wolds.
I live with my husband, our teenage daughter and sprocker spaniel, Ella. I'm a self-confessed stationery addict with a ridiculously large collection of notepads who loves chocolate (although it doesn't love me), hedgehogs, 80s music, collectible teddy bears and lighthouses.
Other than a career detour into retail to set up and run my own teddy bear shop (the inspiration for novel Bear With Me), I've always worked in HR, specialising in resourcing, coaching and L&D. Writing always had to take a back seat to the day job until June 2020 when I left the world of HR to become a full-time author. I'm so very grateful to anyone who has bought or borrowed my books in whatever format, helping me fulfil a long-held dream of writing full-time. I still can't believe I get to spend every day chatting to my fictional friends and making stuff up.
I feel much more comfortable with my Hallmark movies than having to read this again.
Unfortunately I think this missed the mark incredibly. I'm a pretty tough critic of romance novels and this one was impossible to get through.
The first character we are introduced to is Hollie. Her mother owns the Starfish Cafe in Northern England. She has a loving family and boyfriend who doesn't show her affection. Easy to tell from day one they won't last. After seeing several different years on the same Bonfire night, the POV switches to Jack who lives with his grandmother and had a tough childhood. His mother died giving birth to him and his sister has blamed him for their mother's death his whole life.
I was under the impression that the set up of this novel will be going through the years for this one bonfire night (which is how the book was set up). After skipping multiple years through Hollie's life and some of Jack's we are suddenly in the present where everything is SO SLOW. I'm talking snails pace. I had to read every single thought, flashback, action these two character do EVERY SINGLE DAY. This level of detail was so unnecessary and undoubtably the reason the novel was 400 pages long.
Also in the present both characters have lost pretty much every single person that did care about them. It makes the characters feel so in-authentic. How is it possible that these two people could literally have EVERYONE and I mean EVERY SINGLE PERSON that loved them die?? I love tragedy as trope in romance novels but in this book its just TOO much.
With such a weak start to his book, I really had to force my way through it. I couldn't find the willpower to care about the romance and not a single tear was shed from my eyes. Absolutely disappointing start to my holiday reads (which I usually incredibly look forward to).
This book might be the sole reason I am currently in a reading slump.
Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
∙ part of race against time challenge (aka read all 2021 releases before the year ends.)
‘Mr Pickles? Is that really his name?’ Jake grimaced. ‘You think Mr Pickles is bad? His full name is Mr Piccalilli Marmaduke Fluffington the Third.’ I had no idea how to respond to that. That was surely bordering on animal cruelty.
People can still be in love but not like each other very much and sometimes they can like each other but not be in love.
My Review:
I adore Jessica Redland’s books. She is a master storyteller and has a knack for thoroughly enmeshing me into her poignant tales during perusal. At one point, I looked up and felt a bit muddled as I was expecting to see the snow the characters were experiencing, rather than the tropical plants in my yard. So imagine my delight in beginning a new series laced together with endearing and admirable characters who find each other to be exactly what they needed, yet the timing was a bit off with a few complications tossed in to be considered and worked through. The writing was thoughtful, observant, and perceptively insightful with a comfortable balance in emotional tone, and of course, my highly prized and required HEA. I am looking forward to my next visit with my new friends in the quaint British resort village by the sea of Whitsborough Bay.
And score, I found an addition to my Brit Words and Phrases List with “bricking it” which is an informal and nice way of saying they were so anxious or panicky they were shitting bricks. I’ve certainly been there and find this phrase highly useful!
This is a lovely, touching story about relationships between family members and friends. Set on the North Yorkshire coast, we meet Hollie Gabrielle, born on Christmas Eve, called Angel by her mum. Hollie is very close to her parents and brother Isaac. Hollie's grandmother started the Starfish Café, then her mum ran it, and now it is Hollie's turn. Hollie's life was wonderful with her family and her boyfriend but then tragedy struck. She is getting by, living for the café, customers, and friends as well as having a hobby working with wood. But she is not fully healed. Jake has never had much of a happy family life as his mother died when he was born. His father was always sad and his sister hated him. His birthday is a time of sadness. His nanna raised him at a young age and his career as a nurse is fulfilling. He also is training to work as a crew member on the RNLI, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, working to keep the people safe around the coastline, similar to the Coast Guard in the US, as I understand. Hollie and Jake meet when he finds a lost dog near the café on a rainy night. There is an instant connection between these two lonely and hurting souls but they both have so much baggage and fear. Will they make it work or let fear rule their lives? Things are complicated and they get to know each other gradually but will it be enough? This is a sweet slow building story with multiple layers. The Shih Tzu, Pickles, is a connection that adds an extra beloved character to the story. Both loved him and he is such a comfort to them both. Hollie and Jake are great characters and I really wanted things to work out between them. I enjoyed loved the dialect and setting. Sweet ending. I received a complimentary ARC from Boldwood Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
In this story we see Hollie who is trying to get on with her life after 3 heartbreaking losses. Not to mention catching her so called boyfriend in a compromising position. She inherits her mother’s cafe and pours her heart into making it her own. Her fragile heart would like to find happiness but can she ever trust anyone enough to let them into her life???
Jake is reeling from a double tragedy on his birthday and his Nan is all he has left and just as well because his elder sister has spent her life blaming him for the deaths and bullying him. Because of the way he suffered, he decides to blend into the background and never let anyone in.
One day Hollie and Jake meet and as usual with Jessica Redland she takes you on a ride and throws in a few curveballs and misunderstandings.
This was another wonderful book from Jessica. Although it started very sad I wondered if it would get better and thankfully it did. It was warm like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day and I throughly enjoyed it. I’ve loved all her books in this series so far and would love to read her others in the future. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Now, don’t look away that this Christmas book is being reviewed in September. It is nothing to worry about, so stay calm. Whilst the cover is perfectly Christmassy and there are some references to that tinsle-tastic time of year, you can easily read this in the autumn/winter months leading up to Santa’s big event. There is plenty of frost, cold weather, but enough brightness that, quite honestly, I forgot it was supposed to be a Christmas read. Whilst I may have reached for the blanket and a hot chocolate on a warm, summer’s day, I did not care as I was jumping for joy when it came to reading another Redland book.
I have only recently discovered this author and I have loved every book. Therefore, you can imagine my excitement at this new offering! Redland does not disappoint with this read and, although it is rather sad and tragic, I felt immediately immersed in the story and connected to the characters. Redland’s writing made me love Hollie and Jake, adore Mr Pickles, and have a yearning to walk along the beach in winter. What more could you want?!
This aside, you cannot ignore the sadness that dominates this story. Both Hollie and Jake have been marked by tragedies in their lifetime and it has, naturally, had a significant impact on their relationships with others around them. Firstly, whilst Hollie is such a warm, bubbly character, her loneliness is apparent, to the point that her customers at the Starfish cafe cannot help but notice. On the other hand, Jake is having to also ride life solo and, when Redland was discussing Jake’s sister, my jaw literally dropped to the floor. Jake’s sister sounded like a piece of work and, after becoming incredibly loyal to Jake, I wanted to meet her and show her what for!
These poignant characters become reunited over the wonderful dog, Mr Pickles. Redland has great ways of bringing animal characters to life and this is just the same. He sounds so cute and cuddly! Without him, Hollie and Jake would never have met and it was wonderful to watch their blossoming friendship, especially when they decide to co-parent Mr Pickles.
Although the sadness remains throughout the novel, I still really enjoyed watching the transformation take place in Hollie and Jake. United by tragedy and with a shared love of the sea and its coast line, I could vividly picture their growing relationship. I was rooting for them both and I think this connection with the characters was helped by the fact that the chapters switched perspective between them both, and that the narrative is non-linear: in order to break up the wallowing sadness of Hollie and Jake’s histories, they are broken up by the present day story continuing. I found this made the story even more interesting, especially as the intense sadness is diluted by the happiness that Jake and Hollie find in each other’s company.
Undoubtedly, I don’t think I will ever look at a Rubik cube in the same way again! This is a poignant, emotional story that shows how two characters can find happiness after such tragedies. True, there is the presence of Christmas trees and even a bit of snow in the background of this novel but it did not lessen my enjoyment. If you like books that are on the light side of Christmas-themes, this is the one for you. If you have yet to read a Redland book, then this is the one for you. And, if you are stuck for something to read, then definitely give this a go… if you haven’t noticed by now, I loved this story and I cannot wait for the next book to come out!
With thanks to Boldwood books, NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Snowflakes Over Starfish Cafe is an amazing book. I absolutely loved it! Hollie and Jake each have memories of past events that are holding them back from the best possible future they can have. Each have loved ones that were very special to them pass away and they are having trouble letting go. When each of them found the courage to stop the past controlling their future a tremendous weight lifts off of them and they are able to embrace life with each other and Pickles the adorable dog to the fullest. Highly recommended!
Pub date 31 Aug 2021 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you. All opinions expressed are my own.
Well Jessica Redland has broken me, put me back together, and broken me again more times than I can count with this simply superb story.
It really is an emotional rollercoaster of a ride reading this book. Have tissues handy, but also be prepared for some real love and joy and tender moments.
And an adorably little dog, that is the reason that Hollie meets Jake and the reason that they may both start to heal after years and years of heartache.
Both their back stories shape their present while at the same time are so key to the story. We are regularly treated to chapters from both of their pasts, which gives key insights into so so much.
I just loved every last minute of this book, from the Starfish Cafe and the various regulars, to just what is Jake does on Mondays and the reasons for it. From the depth of emotions at all points, to some of the lighter moments, as this really is an uplifting book and it does leave you with a great big smile.
This is a new setting for this author, although not far away from her previous books and there are many cameo mentions about characters featuring in her Whitsborough Bay books.
Fans of Jessica Redland you will know to expect a great deal of heart and depth and this book has it in spades, and if you are new to the author, please don't go into this thinking it will be a light hearted Christmassy book - but go in open minded and you won't be disappointed.
The run up to Christmas is present but the feel is more that is can be a hard time of year for some but there are still some lovely traditions present too.
I am utterly convinced this author is getting more and more amazing with each book she writes, and I can never wait for her to write the next!! Just brilliant.
Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Wow what a read! Snowflakes Over the Starfish Café is such a beautiful story, it's one of those books that plays with every emotion. By the end of the book you feel like you know the characters and for me that's always a winner.
At first it took me a few chapters to work out who was who as there is a fair few amazing characters and each have a part in the story. Which you will discover for yourself.
But the main character is Hollie and her life after tragedy, heartache, joy, second chances, traditions, potential romances, Friendships and the most delightful Starfish Café and all it's eclectic customers. I loved every minute of getting to know Hollie and the other characters.
I'm a Big fan of Jessica Redland's books, and as always, she had written an absolute gem of a story. Snowflakes Over the Starfish Café is a Heart Warming, Uplifting, rollercoaster of a read, that will touch your heart. So grab a blanket, a hot cuppa and maybe a tissue or two and prepare to be swept away.
Thank you to Rachel Random Resources and Boldwood Books for my copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Snowflakes Over The Starfish Cafe is a beautiful love story of two people overcoming tragedies and determined to stay away from love. Well, they find each other and Mr Pickles, and the story takes an interesting turn.
The effects of our past, and the emotional turmoil to overcome it and move towards a better future is not as easy as we'd want it to be.
Hallie and Jake have been through a tough time and find it difficult to accept love, the story revolves around them falling in love and their lives before they met each other.
The book talks about family, love, loss of loved ones and the challenging process of recovery. I enjoyed reading Snowflakes Over The Starfish Cafe, though I do think the book is a bit slow and story seems dragged at some instances.
It's been a great read and readers who enjoy romance novels should give it a try.
Thank you Netgalley, publishers and author, Jessica Redland for the ARC.
4.5 Stars: I really enjoy Jessica Redland's books and this one was no exception. Snowflakes Over the Starfish Café is set in Whitsborough Bay, a setting that I have come to love. This is the story of Hollie and Jake. Both of these characters have had an amazing amount of tragedy in their lives. It is shared with the reader throughout the story. Hollie and Jake are loners, smiling at work and in public, sad and alone in private. When Jake finds Mr. Pickles on the beach during a rather stormy evening, he stops at Hollie's café to see if she knows who he might belong to. She doesn't, but that chance meeting begins a wonderful friendship all because of Mr. Pickles. Can Hollie and Jake break down the barriers that have been holding them back from finding love and happiness, before Christmas comes around?
I have to say, this is a sadder story than I am used to reading from Jessica Redland, but rest assured, there is an uplifting ending. I really loved the characters in this book from Hollie and Jake right down to the elusive Mrs. Sultana. Everyone has something to share and learn from one another, but it is shared in natural circumstances and through actions. The story is told from two POVs, Hollie and Jake, as well as some flashbacks sharing what happened in their past that influenced their lives. This was also a much more emotional book and had me in tears several times. There are some great themes in this book including: life after tragedy, grief, guilt, heartache, new beginnings, traditions, friendship, family, and romance. I loved the Starfish Café and all it's eclectic customers and wish there was one near me. I recommend this uplifting story, but make sure you have tissues handy.
Snowflakes Over The Starfish Café #1 The Starfish Café 3✨
Listen to the audiobook. I liked the pov of hollie, but I could not listen to Jake. I found it unbelievable that both the MMC and the FMC both lost every family member. Every single person was dead. This really felt to much. I rather saw that this was Hollies struggle alone. And then she met Jake, a man who has (ofcourse) a history of his own. Simply not the same. So that felt als een missed plot opportunity.
Who else things the name of the dog (Mr Pickles) is ridiculous?
Snowflakes Over The Starfish Cafe is such a beautiful story, story about love and heartbreak, story about grief and loneliness, story about fear and courage, story about embracing life regardless of what it throws at you and always always dancing in the rain. It's a story that made me laugh and cry and laugh some more and I really enjoyed it.
‘With courage, nothing is impossible’ Snowflakes over the Starfish cafe is a wonderful, warm, emotional story about family, grief and hope. The dual point of view narrative for Jake and Hollie’s stories flow effortlessly and as always with Jessica Redland’s books, are written so sensitively. The coastline and scenery is so vividly described and I’d love to join Hollie on one of her beach combing trips. I was so pleased to read this is the start of a new series and can’t wait to read the next instalment.
We are back in the delightful Whitsborough bay and are introduced to a cast of new characters with a few oldies thrown in for good measure.
In this tale we meet Hollie who has inherited the Starfish Cafe and meets Jake who comes in with a cute lost dog Mr Pickles.
Both of them have traumatic pasts and form the most amazing friendship.
Jessica has that magical touch of writing such sensitive issues but in such a heartwarming way that you just want to plough through the pages with a tissue or two.
A book full of emotion, really lovely characters and a wonderful community within the bay.
I throughly enjoy my trips to the seaside and so wish it was a real place as the Starfish is one place I would love to visit.
I love how Jessica sends you on a rollercoaster of a journey and you read that last page with a big huge smile on your face.
I am a big fan of Jessica and love how I have now introduced my friends to her amazing stories.
If you are looking a feel good uplifting read then this is the perfect read for you.
Another superb book by Jessica Redland. You are guaranteed a lovely warm read when you pick up her latest book. Hollie and Jake are both nursing troubled lives and Pickles the dog brings them together and focusing on making him happy. Hollie is running the cafe and misses having a dog around. Jake has rescued Pickles but needs some help fitting in looking after him.
AHHH I love Jake and Hollie so much they are such a perfect match!! I can not wait until Summer Nights at the Starfish Cafe!! <3 Until then I guess I have to read ALL of Jessica Redlands books.... :D
I have so enjoyed the Hedgehog Hollow series by Jessica Redland, that it was a no-brainer to read Snowflakes Over the Starfish Cafe. Especially with such an attractive cover.
This book is very well written. Apart from a couple of minor typos (sooth instead of soothe, bought instead of brought), the writing flows so well. It’s just so easy to read, and the various timings and two viewpoints work really well. That can’t have been easy!
I was drawn into the story really quickly, and I immediately liked and warmed to the two main characters. I also really liked many of the other characters, and the sense of supportive friendships. I liked the theme of slowly rebuilding after tragedies and difficulties. However, I did find it really hard watching Hollie and Jake go through so much. It makes it extra wonderful when they finally get their happy ending, but it’s a little too emotional for me.
Overall, this is another brilliant and lovely story, that will keep you turning the pages until the end. Just keep your tissues handy!
I was given a free copy of this book, my opinions are my own.
TW: death of 3 family members for each main character. Bullying of younger brother by older sister. Dog dying (old age in flashback).
I mostly enjoyed this as Jessica Redland’s writing is easy to read. But I have to wonder why the author constantly puts the most vile abusive characters in each of her books. And they seem to be always female too. If the author has experienced these types of people in her life often enough to write about them that is very sad.
In this book Larissa is even worse than Chloe in the hedgehog series. Larissa seems murderous and insane. It would have been possible to achieve the same goal of a hurt and unhappy sibling without all the nastiness. For me as a reader constantly being bombarded with these evil characters in a book that is advertised as a light romance is not a good thing. I’m not sure I can read more by this author because of that.
Told from alternating viewpoints, for some this has a slow start. I appreciated getting to know some background to this romantic tale. The setting descriptions are vivid and add to the overall feel of this book. I always love animals as an integral part of any story.
This is no easy romance even if there was immediate attraction. It is a very emotional read. I also enjoy books with strong, supportive friendships.
It is a wonderful read about not giving up, moving forward, and continuing to hope and believe.
This was a DNF for me though those are rare. The book just seemed a mess. A zillion characters thrown in page after page. By the time I started having them sorted in my head, the next chapter went back eight years.
Look. I read GOT before there was a series. I remember writing down family trees to keep characters straight in the beginning. But, I never questioned who those characters were. This Starfish Cafe book was just throwing out names and then maybe saying who the person was later.
The paperback might be fine. For all I know the kindle version may have parts scrambled.
I really enjoyed this book. This author can’t do no wrong in my eyes. I’ve read a few by her now and have loved every, single one. They are such lovely, easy books to read. I whizz through them. Love the Yorkshire sea side setting. I really liked Hollie and Jake. Their stories were so tragic. Two lost souls who found each other. It was meant to be.
I received a digital ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review. Every now and then, a book pulls the proverbial rug from under me, and leaves me moved to tears. This is one of those books. Jessica Redland always delivers wonderful stories, but this is a different league. I went on a rollercoaster ride through every emotion possible from delirious joy to utterly bereft grief. Hollie and Jake are wonderful characters and I loved seeing their friendship grow at a steady pace. From their early encounters over an abandoned dog, to their delicious romance, I felt a real joy at seeing their connection grow ever stronger. We learn from the start that both characters have endured extensive heartache and it’s impossible not to hope that they will each support the other as they follow the difficult path which leads to recovery from pain. Of course, the path of true love is never smooth, but Jessica takes that view to another level. Starfish Café is located just outside of the delightful Whitsborough Bay, made famous by Jessica’s other titles, but this is a standalone story with some of the best characters that she has introduced to date. I actively avoid spoilers, and for that reason, I am struggling to include more detail about the story. It is a finely woven drama which encompasses some of the most poignant scenarios which I could ever imagine. Whilst this beautiful book includes such heart-breaking elements, there’s joy at its core. From learning Sylvia’s story, Betty and Tommy, Irene and Jaffa, there is plenty of happiness to even the score. Just remember to keep your tissues close when you start reading this very special book!
Yay, my first Christmas book of the year by one of my favourite authors. Jessica's books never disappoint & always leave you with that warm hug feeling.
The main characters were so lovely together, although their back stories were absolutely heartbreaking. As for Larissa, she deserved the biggest slap ever. What an absolute bitch of a sister she was!
As always, beautifully written, with a gorgeous heartwarming storyline. Guaranteed to give you all the feels, but will leave you with a big satisfying happy smile on your face 😊
We find ourselves back in Whitsborough Bay & our first point of call is The Starfish Café being run by Hollie, who is striving to keep her late mother's traditions alive in what was her Café. Behind closed doors Hollie is still mourning the loss of her family.
Jake too is mourning his parents, unable to let anyone get too close or open up to them.
When a chance meeting with Hollie occurs, thanks to Mr Pickle, can they both begin to break down their barriers & find themselves the love they both deserve?
Another beaut from Jessica that I would highly recommend you read!
I tried so hard to like this book, I love Jessica’s writing & books usually but I found the characters stories unrealistic. I also didn’t like how the chapters kept jumping forwards & backwards in time and felt it messed with the flow of the story. Sorry!
2.5/5 this book was literally all about grief and trauma and maybe about christmas for 2 seconds. unfortunately was not the jolly jolly book i thought i was getting into but again 2 stars for the invisible string theory because im a sucker for that
