For centuries poetry has been a form of knowledge and a way of knowing for non centred people. In this collection Muneera re-centres her voice and the voices of other people that are often times relegated to the sidelines or misrepresented in mainstream thought. This collection explores belonging, spirituality, gender, race and identity as well as themes of girlhood, pop culture, familial bonds and crushes, against the back drop of London and Bristol streets steeped colonial power structures that still live on. Despite that this collection is a story of love and a labour of love.
Raw, revitalising and relatable are the words I would use to describe this poetry collection.
I have often said that I struggle to resonate with English poetry, but what I have come to realise is that it’s because often the English poetry I have read is about themes that have nothing to do me and things I cannot resonate with.
Where as the focus of this collection is love, vulnerability, prayer, spirituality, tariqa, womanhood and divine love.
Hence, every poem resonated with me so deeply. I felt like there have been some thoughts in my mind for years and Muneera was able to put them into words.
One key thing I took away from this collection and that which I absolutely love is the expression of God’s universality. The idea of his being for everyone and the blessing we all have to be able to access God and his mercy so directly.
Also as someone that follows a spiritual path (tariqa), every poem about tariqa, the shaykhs and the community really stuck with me. Having experienced the beauty and sweetness of a tariqa community, it just felt like Muneera was expressing how I have felt after having found this community.
There were a few poems on womanhood, motherhood, being a God loving woman and the sacredness of the womb. These poems left me in complete awe and speechless.
The whole collection is a beautiful expression of vulnerability, whilst knowing that God is there and will be there for you. No matter what. I love everything about it and I can’t wait to read more of Muneera’s work.
I can’t recommend this collection enough + the cover is so beautiful and vibrant!
