This is a really enjoyable collection of crime detective stories set in modern day Boston. Detective Dominic Rivers and his new sidekick, Bert Tomlin, set about solving a series of crimes, ranging from missing persons to murder.
The style of writing is concise and fast-paced, but full of enough description to get a good feel of all the characters: the detectives and the suspects they are interrogating. It was very satisfying to be able to read a whole whodunnit story in one sitting. The feel of the book is a bit like a modern day Philip Marlowe novel, and these stories will appeal to anyone who likes crime detective novels or murder mysteries.
I particularly liked the way that each of the stories was different, with its unique crime, but they flowed into each other. The working relationship between Rivers and Tomlin also develops, providing continuity and a personal touch.
A huge thank you Deepika for sending me a copy of Buried Secrets from across the pond for me to review!
Synopsis:
Based in Boston, Massachusetts, Dominic Rivers and Bert Tomlin are two detectives who work together to solve different cases from missing persons to murder. In Buried Secrets, we are given three stories where Dominic and Bert encounter all types of mysterious suspects and some are a lot nicer than others, it is their responsibility to solve these crimes, risking their own lives in the process before it is too late.
Review: The description for each of the stories in this book were short but enough to have me intrigued, all the stories appealed to me and I was looking forward to exploring them all. I have read and enjoyed books in the past that have followed certain characters so I was looking forward to also meeting Dominic and Bert and embarking on a journey with them as they solve their mysteries. As there are three different stories in this book, I am going to write a little mini review for each one: Know Your Neighbours: I instantly liked how the chapters were short and snappy, this kept the story flowing at a pace which was suited the way I read. I also liked how the narrative jumped between characters so you could really get into their heads and live in the story. I felt that no characters could be trusted, they all seemed like they hand their secrets and the cliff hangers at the end of the chapters also built on the suspense and kept you intrigued. This was a juicy story with plenty going on and of course we meet the two detectives for the first time. I was looking forward to seeing if they would eventually connect with each other. I found the ending to be very satisfying and I was looking forward to my next instalment. He Saw It Coming The first thing I noticed about this read is how the stories fed into each other, you could pick up where you left off and everything just flowed. It came to light in this book how clever Deepika is as her play on words did not go unnoticed when she wrote the words “he would be dead wrong.” I really appreciated how that linked to the story. There were flash backs in this story and these were clear and easy to follow. I connected well with this story as I had the first and I liked that this time it was hard to guess what would happen, I enjoy when a read can keep me on my toes. In Her Eyes Again, the stories continued to flow and what I really noticed about this read is that we saw the detectives on a more emotional level this time. Each read was different when it came to the detectives. I was relieved when I didn’t call the story, again Deepika managed to keep me on my toes! The closure at the end I also thought was fantastic although I will miss the detectives and their antics!
So, to summarise this book, I connected well with all the stories and each one offered something different. Each story was short and fast paced which meant it is ideal for those short on time. You could really connect well with the characters and I loved how you saw the detective’s friendship develop into something heart-warming. Buried Secrets was a detective thriller I could easily get lost in.
Buried Secrets: The Three-Story Collection of Dominic Rivers and Bert Tomlin Mysteries: a detective thriller by Deepika Viswanath is a trilogy in one book itself. Engaging storyline, distinct angles, and new cases made the journey of the Detective adventuresome and attractive.
Dominic Rivers and Bert Tomlin are Boston-based detectives that look into everything from missing people to murder. In this three-story set, they meet a variety of mystery suspects, some kinder than others. Will Dominic Rivers and Bert Tomlin gain knowledge or risk their lives in the quest for justice? There are 3 stories - Story 1- Know Your Neighbors Story 2- He Saw it Coming Story 3-In Her Eyes I personally liked the 3rd story a bit more for the vivid character sketch in it. However all three stories successfully aroused my inquisitive mind and thus I can very well compliment the book to be precisely achieved its aim being a detective Mystery novel. Old names of detective,as we all know, will be there but I can assure that this read will include names of Dominic and Bret in your next to be read list. Although it's fiction but author used some real names of places to make it more lively in favour of anecdote and aesthetic sense.
