Love can make monsters of us all. Some monsters are just more dangerous than others…

Torga, the man once known as “The Devourer,” survived the destruction of his own universe by the skin of his teeth. Now he's faced with an even more terrifying ordeal: rebuilding that universe from scratch.

At least he's not alone this time around. He’s saved his dear wife, Reina, by granting her the unparalleled abilities of a goddess, but he’s also painted an enormous target on her back in the process. Now, beings from across the multiverse want to take her newfound power for themselves, and they'll do anything and everything to get it. Torga has more to lose than ever before. The very existence of their universe hangs in the balance...

It's time for The Devourer to bare his fangs once again.

DNF after 32%

MC destroyed his universe and killed every character from the previous books but him and his wife. He up to the point I read didn't even care about killing his adoptive daughters and friends.

Torga seems to have lost most of his power once again, which just happened in the book before this one. The author seems to have written himself into a corner with this series, but resetting the entire universe and depowering the MC is just lazy writing.

Besides that, the genre/theme changed to world/dungeon-building, so this novel shares neither characters (aside from 2) nor genre/theme with its predecessors, only the setting remains the same and even that has been altered in a major way by resetting the universe.

I'm really disappointed, as I loved the first two books in this series and, while liking it less than the first two, still enjoyed the third one as well.

A Bottomless Abyss - "A Snake's Rule" (A Snake's Life, #4) by Kenneth Arant

Rating: ⭐ (1/5)

Swift Dissection: Kenneth Arant's "A Snake's Rule" continues the abysmal trend of its predecessors, cementing its place as a testament to uninspired writing and a perplexing lack of narrative direction.

Lamentable Traits:

The plot languishes in a seemingly never-ending cycle of stagnation, offering no semblance of progress or engaging developments.
Any expectations of character evolution are swiftly quashed, leaving the protagonist mired in a state of perpetual mediocrity.
The recycling of worn-out themes and narrative devices further contributes to the suffocating sense of predictability and boredom.
The fantasy setting, initially a potential source of intrigue, remains an empty canvas, devoid of the vibrant details needed to spark the reader's imagination.
The titular "rule" appears to be one of perpetual disappointment, as the series fails to establish any semblance of authority over its own narrative chaos.

Final Venom: "A Snake's Rule" serves as a disheartening reminder of the series' ongoing descent into literary oblivion. A tedious read that offers nothing but a reaffirmation of its own narrative bankruptcy.

This is a reboot that fixes none of the problems it has.

Is seems like the author wrote himself into a corner and just decided to start over. The beginning invalidated the entirety of book three, no big loss in my opinion. The inclusion of Torga's wife still drags this down, hobbling the story and ruining the mood. I really don't see this new direction leading anywhere but back to the same problems the first one had.

sorry bro

You ruined it with the wife storyline. Was a good series. What a tragedy. Really disappointed that you wrote yourself into this terrible corner. Rewrite this and kill of the stupid wife and move on and maybe I’d read it again.

Torga is imprisoned having been set up by Orachi who really has it out for him, but he needs to break free as he wants to find out what had happened to his Reina in the meantime. However once he broke free it seems his life was set to start anew and in order to still save Reina, his beloved human/elf wife he resurrects her but she is now Yggdrasill's core, the life tree. Apparently they have been chosen to populate a new planet and grow it in any way they liked so they set out to do just this, but although all Torga wanted was to live in peace, building his planet and sharing it with Reina in whatever form she was in there where others who had other plans for them. Apparently their planet was part of a multiverse, many planets with their own Yggdrasills who could come over and attack them and try to steal what they were trying to build. Torga would not allow anyone to threaten what is his, so when one particular bully kept harassing and taunting him Torga showed him he was messing with the wrong snake. Once again Aranth takes us on a roller coaster ride of adventure with the incredible Torga and the beautiful Reina and I cannot wait to see the planet they are going to populate between the two of them.

An okay story. It also felt a lot short than what I expected based on the activity in the story. My biggest complaint was a complete sweeping under the rug of all the major events that came before it. It was as though the author decided he wanted to right a dungeon core series and but wanted to use the same characters so simply gave up on the previous plotline. Perhaps it’ll tie better into things later on but by-and-large I felt cheated. I may look into the next one eventually but my interest overall has been severely impacted. If it weren’t for enjoying the characters from before I might even have rated it a 2. Very disappointing.

Great

The book is overall great, the few problems I have with it could be avoided. These problems are.
1. The main story from the previous book moves on to fast.
2. Torga powers/skills could be shown in the system. I.e. which ones he still had.
3. It's confusing on how strong Torga is at the current moment.
4. With the story line with the tree, it would make sense to show how manys years it is.
5. The ending isn't great we don't have much of a reason why Orochi hates Torga, hopefully we find out in the next book.

Overall it's a great book.

New direction barely touched

It’s nice to see the books take a new direction, but the pitiful length leaves me frustrated. Opening up a huge amount of new possibilities and then barely touching on them before rushing to a conclusion…so much more could have been done. This book needed to be three times longer and instead just felt like a prologue that I’m going to have to wait another 6 months for. Here’s hoping the next one has more content!

Very different from the other books. At times it felt like a dungeon core novel with the main characters being the gods. The dungeon diving scenes were cool. I feel like this series has an identity issue. It doesn’t know what it wants to be. I still have enjoyed each book in the series but the last two have been very different than the first two. I wish there was some more consistency in the world building and magic systems.

Another great book

Since Torga is so powerful at this point, taking the time to let him build something up with his wife was a good idea. This particular book had some dungeon core vibes if your into that, and the introduction of a couple of interesting characters. Looking forward to finishing this series.

Pleasantly Surprised

The direction this story took was left field but in a good way and i enjoyed it because of that, there were so many people in the other books that by the time this one came out i forgot most of them but now its easier. Great story and the author did a wonderful job building it up

Fairly good continuation

At first I wasn't thrilled with the book as it totally changed everything and I could care less about the brownies, but towards the end it starts picking up again. Still not sure how some characters are around and the exact relationships are for them but I'm looking forward to finding out.

Even better and better

The start i understood why it happened but i didnt really like having the universe be destroyed…but other than that this book was a great read even if some things were cliché like Orochi being alive still (basically only thing I found cliché)

Torga!!!!

Wow, this book was amazing. It took me a couple of minutes to get used to the shift in the beginning of this book, and I loved every second of it. Waiting eagerly for the next book

Excellent

Interesting story. Less of a sequel and more a restart.

In first few chapters we learn why did Torga grow so quickly and why were he and Sarah chosen.

Book goes in unexpected direction, but I like it enoigh for 5 stars.

From fantastic story to a garbage dungeon

I had high hopes for this series, but it went into a dungeon making book.
I'm so utterly disappointed that I am unable to fully express ....!@#$ this book.

good book.. starts slow

I guess the Author had to reset the plot as Torga had become very powerful. Our MC and his wife get reset to a new multiverse where they have to start new. The first 30% is slow to be end story picks up very nicely and the old Toga is back

Not his best

I was kind of disappointed in this one, if seem that he was just trying to get this one out. Not up to his usual standards with the series.

shortly - boring

at lenght -
The previous books in this series were highly entertaining, but a king of roller coaster. Not in terms of quality, that remains overall the same, but in themes.
Book 1 and 2 are rather similar, LitRPG with a lot of details, stats and so on. I personally just sstarted skipping the stat pagest tbh.
Book 3 is kind of "fucking around" for most of the time when nothing of substance happens and then suddenly ending that works as a door to a new and different series.
And book 4 starts very fun and solid by playling on all the previous themes, kinda, and then in a span of one short chapter literally everyone dies. And book becomes Lit-grand strategy, tower defence, city builder?
Ending all the unfinishes story lines, killing everyone and "oh wow, let's build a new universe".
That is just so sad in a literary sence. I feel sorry for all these characters that were hinted at their development, everything. Bloody Fenris, we've spent 3 books with him and just as he is about to become something new, his daughter and son, Torgas daughter, everyone, you know what, let's delete all of that.
Ctrl+A, Delete - thats what happened
This killed the series. Pathetic

I will finish this book! At the time I start this review I am only at 43% - and let me tell you, it's fucking rough.

How do you, as an author, think that taking a whole universe and nuking it is okay for the reader's enjoyment? Not only are you starting over, but the THREE PRIOR BOOK CHARACTERS that you either loved or loved to hate are all but ash now? So many unanswered questions, like what happened to Asgard? What happend to Fenrir? The Judges? - Nah lets just nuke them all and start over with a world-build scenario that gets invaded like fucking Clash of Clans for your resources, that sounds like a great idea.... No wonder why Book 5 has yet to come out after three years.

Will add more after book is finished...

My first DNF

The next step in Torgas live.
This book could have been the start of a different book series, as it more or less takes the main characters and throws them into a basically different system/universe. Not in a bad way, just in a way where you could basically also start the series here.
I am excited to see how it will continue.
