I take back everything I said about Kuon, he’s completely redeemed in my eyes. The red card move was sick, and the short glimpse of his backstory definitely added depth to his character/motives.

The next round is about to start!! I’m excited for what the individual trials will entail, especially now that team Z will be forced to split up.

LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOO TEAM Z IM SO PROUD OF THEM🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

what another badass volume 100000000/10
ego??? 🤯🤯🤯
nagi and reo are so cool, i need MORE MORE MORE MORE. nagi has only been in the last couple volumes but he’s quickly becoming one of my favs already. he is such a mood. that match was so intense, i was on the edge of my seat. and isagi was killing ittttt like wowwwwwww. also RIN 👀 new characters incoming HELL YEAHHHHH.

also, maybe i forgive kuon a little bit after what he did for the team in this volume 🥺

they’ve made it to the second selection so i’m excited to see what’s to come next. i really don’t know what to expect because ego is a little insane and very unpredictable. but I just know it’s going to be amazing and i’m so ready 😎

pre-read:

I think it's a okay-ish volume, the MCs face new powerful opponents and have to build up trust and teamwork again. I look forward to seeing what will happen next!

Oh my goodness. I never thought I’d see the day when I’d like Kuon again. Sometimes you gotta take that big risk to get that big payoff!!

I don’t know what I need from Isagi, but I need him to have a super cool moment on par with the rest of the gang.

Lemme get into volume 6 real quick!!

HOLD ON HOLD ON HOLD ON! I knew Ego Jinpachi was playing mind games with the trainees but all wings are wing 5? How is he gonna wittle down the group?

(Looking back on it, I think I had way too much fun reviewing the last volume.)

Our boys in blue are back to finish off their match against top-rated Team V. As Team Z rallies, mutations are flying faster than the X-Men touring Chernobyl. Can Isagi and Team Z dig deep and overcome or will their dream die here? Here’s a broad hint - this isn’t the last volume of Blue Lock.

After suffering through a couple of manga lately where the action was aggressively poorly staged, I have to give it up to Blue Lock because for all it’s grotesque facial contortions and such, it knows how to put on a soccer match.

We always know where the ball is, where the important players are, we always know what’s going on. The broader field is zeroed in to what, exactly, we as readers should know. Don’t get me wrong, it’s all still patently ludicrous - if soccer had this many speed lines in real life it would’ve supplanted all sport years ago.

But it’s entertaining and makes perfect sense in its own stylized world and that’s super important and the difficulty in maintaining that consistency and the fact that it does is worth a couple paragraphs of praise now and again.

Especially since the match takes up most of the volume and I don’t have much else to work with. Even with the outcome not especially in doubt, I do think the mangaka manages to wrench every last ounce of drama from seeing Team Z pull themselves together. If you buy into the story at all there’s some good stuff here.

Some of it doesn’t work - there’s a little backstory and a reversal that makes sense for the character but it kind of taints what Team Z pulls off for me. I mean, soccer’s full of that sort of shenanigans, so I suppose there’s no harm, no foul in one sense.

We also get, somewhat obliquely, an explanation for just how Japan is paying for five wings of high tech soccer torture. If nothing else, it cements my suspicion that even if Japan does win a World Cup from this, Ego will likely be watching from jail.

I’ve barely mentioned the characters, who are all paper thin but at least look distinct. I appreciate the attempts at fleshing them out but largely it all boils down to ‘I wanna win’ in various shapes.

Isagi is more our guide than a full lead at this point, but I do love the way that we finally see him grow into his quirk, uh, I mean, special ability after five volumes and that it’s powerful but not overpowering. The art where the pieces literally fall into place for him is pretty great stuff.

3.5 stars, for well crafted sporting mayhem. It is, as it has always been, a book of glory hounds engaging in soccer tomfoolery, but this is some next level tomfoolery and this, for all its faults, is never a boring book for me. Even better, next volume promises the return of the ludicrous high-tech soccer-adjacent death game challenges and you best believe I won’t be missing that.

ratings of the following omnibus volumes:
Vol. #3: ★★★★☆ (4.5)
Vol. #4: ★★★★☆ (4.5)
Vol. #5: ★★★★★

This is the first volume (5th) that I've read when we have the adaptation already and I can say it is keeping up with the amazingness.
CHIGIRI so cool, I'm proud of him like wtf.
Fuck Kuon but also they made me empathize with him later on? character development.
So far I love our team Z the best but V comes closer. That game gave me anxiety and it was intense! My favorite so far and the twist at the end was genius. Never saw it coming.

Fight till the end! This one was a ton of fun. Watching all these strikers work as a team was great, and our main lead even got a bit of an upgrade. The twist was also nice, even if the abrupt ending left me a little cold.

There is once again another plot twist. However, it was kind of underwhelming and wasn't necessary in my opinion. Nevertheless, Blue Lock never fails to surprise me. The art is also incredibly emotional. You can really feel what the characters are experiencing.

I was so nervous in this volume! For now, my favourite character is Kunigami and I want him to advance into the next selection. Other than that, the story is progressing really great. I can't say much because it will end up being a spoiler hahahha

The way I screamed when Isagi scored that goal because sLAY !! Also, Yoichi Isagi when he’s fired up >>>> He do be making me feel things when he’s in the zone. I also believe in Bachira supremacy, literally the only reason I still keep on reading.

THEY'RE JUST SO MUCH FUUUUNNNN

look I love rereading this so much because I'm paying more attention now and it's just as fun but also there is so much character development happening even for side characters that I didn't know would be so important later on.
