WHORE. BLOOD TRAITOR. MURDERER. I will accept no restitution but your life.
Those are the words Theo sent Draco, once Draco Malfoy and now Draco Black. The words Draco will never tell anyone that Theo sent. As Draco enters into that fatal sixth year, those are the words that hang over him as he tries to protect his friends, his new family, his godfather. As he tries to protect the boy he loves from the boy he once loved, whose life he ruined with one curse. But Draco has another word now: Dantanian. The key to his wand, to his blood, to the past, to three mirrors, and to his aunt waiting to take her own forfeit from him. The pursuit of Dantanian will take Draco beyond his own past, to truths too horrifying to accept, and acts too evil to speak. To the Prisoner of Nurmengard.
First of all I would like to sincerely apologise for the person I was when I was reading this fic. I talked about this fic with friends, I have talked about it with family members , I have forwarded links of it to strangers I was meeting for the first time, I did the 4am tumblr deep dive for a crumb of additional content, I have lived I have loved I have bought the ironic novelty tee from the giftshop and now I’m back to the land of living
I know there’s a 7th book currently being written but I will try to force myself to not read it until it’s finished so I can binge it.
I loved LOVED this series. I loved all the characters, I loved what an unreliable narrator and hot mess Draco was, I loved all the heroes and the villains and all of the complex characters that fell in between .
I was promised a slow burn with mutual pining and I was NOT disappointed
The reason this was a 4 ⭐️ was that at certain points, the entire plotline of 'Draco the self-deprecating dark wizard' did seem to be repetitive (and the whole dynamic with the chosen one grew to be tiring) but after the I'm hoping that Draco will finally get that hug he desperately needs and tone of the story will shift to the better.
(also I’d never log fanfic on Goodreads but considering these rewrites of the series are longer than the acc hp books and the fact I’m going through them i think deserves to go to my reading challenge) the lore was dense in this one, took some time to get through all of it,,,I think I didn’t like this one as much as the others but let’s see if the deathly hallows rewrite is any worse
"The Prisoner of Nurmengard" is a wonderful 6th book in the series. It still has humor and adventure, but it's starting to go deeper into the realm of tragedy.
I have so many things to say, I think I'll just say nothing else.
I also realized while halfway through that this one book is the length of about 4-5 regular novels.
To be honest, though, I'm seriously impressed with the author for coming up with all this and building off of the original material so seamlessly. This book could get pretty dark, but I also feel like I laughed out loud more than usual. The writing really can be quite witty and fun.
Second time read: - The reunionnnn <3<3<3<3<3 - Draco messing with everyone about his OWL results LOL - "Please. You couldn't keep your hands to yourself even when we'd been snogging every day. You just can't help yourself when it comes to me, can you?" No matter how many people I murder in the interim. - The Sorting had me PRESSED and I already knew the outcome XD God, I love this series. Everything is so dramatic and Draco is always the center of attention and I love it. - "Based on my track record with dormmates, you are far more likely to have me murder one of your family members than proposition you." BAHAHAHAHA-- I love him so much. - Forever amused by Draco's hatred for Ginny XD - Forgot how dark this one is! Every scene with Theo is so fraught... But I love the confrontation scene in the graveyard with Draco, Harry, and Theo. So dramatic!! And then Harry consoling a crying Draco in the end... - (Hearing about the Halloween party): Ooh, fun! (It's a masquerade): Oh, huh, why does that give me a bit of a bad feeling... (Sirius mentions the infamous Stag Mask): Oh, bloody hell. - I love that in the same way that Harry becomes a Parselmouth through Voldemort, Draco becomes a pyromancer through Dantanian Noir. - It's so hard for me to stop reading, but I definitely took a break right before the masquerade chapter XD It's just such a painful but also awkward event... Except now I'm confused because, it wasn't real?? But I'm pretty sure it does turn out to be... But then why wouldn't Luna remember seeing Draco leave with Harry?? - How on earth did the author come up with the whole Gilderoy/vampire plot?? It's wild XD - "Ronald Weasley, I could kiss you right now, if my boyfriend wouldn't smother you in your sleep for it." "Yeah, think I'll pass, mate." - I love how much Harry doesn't give a damn about Draco's weird and often highly unnerving actions. You know, like holding a knife to his throat! Can't hold something like that against your boyfriend when it's par for course. - STOP, THE COMBINATION OF DRACO TELLING LUNA SHE COULD CLIMB OUT OF HELL UNSCATHED AND THEN NEVILLE MAKING THE CONNECTION WIYH ORPHEUS AND EURYDICE AS A ROMANTIC GESTURE AND IT ENDS UP HELPING DRACO PUT TOGETHER THE PIECES ABOUT THE MIRROR OF ECIDYRUE - LMAO all the girls hitting on Harry around Christmas and Draco threatening to go postal XD - One of the best part of this series is experiencing so much alongside these characters and then feeling like you're part of the club when they reminisce on past events. One of my favorites is when they bring up all the silly Valentine's songs. - Every time Draco describes Harry as an "Amortentia-soused octopus" an extra year is added to my lifespan. - I'd told myself that I would skip the Dantanian backstory, but I just got drawn into it against my will. Oh, well, it'll be a good refresher in the long run when he comes back later. - It's honestly kind of awful how much Draco neglects Harry. Harry is always left out of everything, always cast aside, constantly lied to... And the treatment honestly just gets worse here. Of everything Draco does, which I don't even fault him for, this seems the worst. Ignoring him for a month straight and coming back with no excuses?? Immediately going back to lying and keeping secrets and actively avoiding Harry?? That scene where Harry overhears Draco and Snape talking about the wand and gets absolutely no answers just hurrrttt. (Two seconds later) ohp, nvm, Harry broke up with him LMAO. I just feel bad for Harry, man. - honestly, getting into Nurmengard is far too easy. - A HELL-PUDDLE LMAO. "You wish to create another hell lake?" "Not lake," Draco wheedled. "Just a little bit of water. Like, a hell-pond. A hell-puddle." "A hell-puddle," Karkaroff breathed, looking so traumatized he was regretting ever learning the English language. - Ah, I remember my mindless desperation when first beholding the Langlock against Grindelwald as well, preventing Harry from learning the truth about Draco. It was so frustrating the first time around. Now I was mostly just dreading the shit that goes down after the Nurmengard escape. But little could have prepared me for the horror of watching (reading) Theo kissing Bellatrix Lestrange. With tongue. BSKDJAKNDKQLOSIWBX *full body shudder* Ugh, and then he calls her "my love" and I just wanted to end it all. What the fuck. What the fuck. - OK WAIT I THINK I REMEMBER SOMETHING. The moonstone dagger that falls into the höllenpfütze becomes a weapon that can steal magic! I think! - LUNA'S SO COOL HAHAHA HELPING DRACO CONCEAL THE MIRROR OF ESPILCE. - After Theo's been such a piece of shit, it makes me so mad to see Draco be weak in front of him. Yes, he's worried about Luna, but I wish he'd use just a fraction of his typical arrogance in the Chamber of Secrets scene :/ I really don't understand why he even lets Theo talk for so long. He couldn't tied him up or something and then demanded answers. - goddamn... I didn't remember Draco killing Theo... and those two elves... Welp. They did let Death Eaters into Hogwarts... Anyway, it's kind of funny that Draco's first act upon learning about the invasion into Hogwarts, killing a basilisk, murdering his classmate and two house elves, and blowing up the Chamber of Secrets is... to take a shower. Like, sir. Your school is under attack. Not to mention, I wanted everyone to see him looking absolutely WILD and bloodied and wonder what the HECK went down. - Aw heck :( Draco lying to Millie about Theo. This can't end well. (My memory is literally so shit, it's like reading this for the first time. Yippee.) - Absolutely heartbreaking scene in front of Grindelwald's grave... Draco thinks he doesn't deserve to live because of the people he's killed, and it's painful because he wants to die but is scared and doesn't want to leave everyone, and he doesn't want to die, but he must. 3 - My little heart going squeee when Draco threatens to hunt Harry down to the ends of the earth if Harry tries to leave him behind <3 We love a romantic psychopath. But for real, it's so cute how ardently he insists on going with Harry. STOPPP AND THEN DRACO BEGGING TO GET BACK TOGETHER. Harry was flummoxed LMAO.
i think you have to be at least a little insane to write something as gloriously complex as this.
my god. i never once knew where the plot was going to turn to next or what we were going to learn about (love me a fic that EDUCATES)(also a little annoying because draco seems to dive into doing things without ever truly thinking things through - but also, really, who can blame him?) and the passages of conversation with the prisoner of nurmengard were just heartaching. draco continues to be plagued with crippling insecurity and self-doubt that continues to be his undoing in a vicious sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. i spent half this fic yelling at my screen in frustration wishing he would trust his friends enough for once to not believe him the monster he thinks he is.
i adored the author pulling from their own culture and language to add that extra flourish of details. there was less focus on the romance aspect which is understandable since there was a lot of other things going on....comparing the events of this book with its jkr counterpart is just surreal, hbp feels as bland as unsalted white bread now - you realize there really was a lot more she could have added to the story. bellatrix has officially cemented herself as a more terrifying villian than voldemort himself.
excited to see how the dantanian + million other plot threads tie up in the end, and how draco plays a part in the iconic golden trio horcrux hunt of deathly hallows. i love this series with all my heart oh my fuck. onto the final book!!!!!!!!!! im going to savor every page.
It was really great then too many things happened, and I feel like I'm back from the longest journey EVER. How will the author finish the last book?
Also; 1. Harry is short for Harold?! Wtf 2. Theo's death will literally eat Draco alive. He lied to everyone! 3. Luna is now my favourite. She should go on the hunt for horcruxes 4. I bet it'll take a LONG time for Draco to figure out he has two of the horcruxes. 5. Draco did get 12 OWLS in chapter one. Despite all the craziness feel like that should be celebrated. 6. Who killed dumbledore? I bet it's a surprise spy in Gryffindor/ravenclaw. Ooh or voldermort since he was at the castle 7. More cute ravenclaw Riddles 💙 8. Lol Draco went through SO much. I feel like I'd have to re-read this again just to remember HALF of them. 9. Grindelwald was very gay in this book❤️

"You suffered, as so many suffer, due to a simple set of twin forces: ill will and poor luck."
I really fucking hope i didn't accidentally go into a series that is not HEA, since this book doesn't make it a positive prospect, quite, at all.
It can be summed up as:
"In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king."
Except everyone is so fucking blind. Someone even lost their eyes somewhere miles deep in their sockets there. The fucking audacity to make me baby-cry like this.
4 Estrellas 🌟🌟🌟🌟
"Draco Black and the Prisoner of Nurmengard" es la sexta entrega de la serie "The Mirror of Ecidyrue"
Las interacciones con sus nuevos compañeros "Based on my track record with dormmates, you are far more likely to have me murder one of your family members than proposition you" y los acertijos para entrar a la sala común me gustaron mucho.
Y por último... sigo encantada de la relación con Ron haha "Ronald Weasley, I could kiss you right now, if my boyfriend wouldn't smother you in your sleep for it." "Yeah, think I'll pass, mate."
Quick read the second half. This became a totally different book, a lot of original material, with some traces of the OG book. Draco is a very dark character here. I don't think I like him, number one for his constant lies. Book is very dramatic and intense.
How was this better than the whole of Harry Potter.??Seriously, it had so much more lore, character development, emotion, despair. I love how the whole series is a more adult and realistic take on the whole story. I guess the war and the casualties hit differently when there’s actual cruelty.
The quality of the writing was absolutely superb. The author put so much research in her lore. (There were whole passages about Name origins, Roman myths??) (So many quotes from famous classical books??). The writing flew by like a meadow. (also all the characters had such clear and different ways of speech omg).
I’m so shocked to say it but: This was as good as Babel from R.F. Kuang. This was not Fanfiction, but a 750 page critique on how far one should go for the greater good.
I will print this. I will worship this. I will never be the same again.
THE BEST ONE YET. A MASTERPIECE WRITTEN BY A GENIUS. THE VOCABULARY, THR PROSE, THE DIALOGUE, THE CHARACTERS, THE ANGST THAT WORKS WITH THE EVEN MORE AMAZING PLOT, THE ORIGINAL CANON-DEVIANT CONTENT, EVERYTHING.
3.25 stars *spoilers* This is a fanfic, so I'm not rating it based on the writing (that is grammar and prose here)
What didn't do it for me: - the lore dropping. I usually have nothing against lore - hell, I even like it. I devoured Lord of the Rings. Worldbuilding is my fav thing in fantasy (this and dragons) - but here, it was too much, even for me. 3 chapters full of flashbacks from characters we don't even know were too much, and, to be frank, I didn't care about Dantanian. Like at all. I get that he must be important to the story, but I didn't care for him. - I would've loved for Draco to focus on the Horcruxes and defeating Voldemort rather than on the Mirrors and Dantanian. - Draco killing Theo. WTF. Oh, quite the tragic moment, yes. But, I don't really get it. Plus, he left Theo's body to burn in the Chamber of Secrets?! Yeah, nah
What I liked: - Theo, my favorite chaos puppy. I love an unhinged Theo causing chaos. - Grindelwald - Draco trying to take down Dumbledore. I hate Dumbledore so I loved it when Draco confronted him about manipulating Harry - Sirius and Remus (Wolfstarrrr)
So, yeah. Definitely not my favorite in the series. Might read the last one, don't know when
amazing canon-deviant content, super well fleshed-out and (mostly) comprehensible (it took a few rereads and phoning friends), and giving a layer of humanity (albeit still unsure if it was genuine or just trickery) to grindelwald as well as build a relationship with draco in such a short period of time was such a great artistic choice - not only was grindelwald the only one to understand he’s displaced in time and physically talk about it but also to really understand the moral dilemma of the orpheus curse……? the Albus/Gellert and Harry/Draco parallels are insane and the best part of this fic
wait no I take that back. SNAPE AND LOCKHART? Are you KIDDING ME? Their slow burn was so good it had me wishing we could take a break from drarry for more of them! And Ginny and Millie - what a precious and unlikely couple but so perfect! I really hope Millie gets her happy ending for making the difficult choice to leave her friends/switch sides. oh and of course the DBDM was excellent and perfectly angsty <3
but I will be taking off a star because there is only so much exposition I can handle until some scenes are just extraneous lol
theo nott they could never make me hate you—even if they have you make out with bellatrix lestrange.
the interweaving of original lore that ties in so insanely to canonical lore is absolutely incredible. bringing greek mythology into anything will always have me sat. i feel like this fanfic series has really delved into and expanded the original world soooooooo much more and it is brilliant. i truly did not think i’d ever love this as much as i have but i’ve (for the most part) enjoyed how the characters portrayal and development has gone.
6th year. Completely different from cannon. This one has the story of Dantanian Noir which I didn’t care for much. Dumbledore is dead, and Draco has so many enemies. He will go horrcrux hunting though, let’s see what happens.
Edited to add: Severus is such a mood in these books. I love him.
“We should use Lockhart as slave labor," was how Severus pitched the concept to Dumbledore, and Draco put his head in his hands.
“Kindly find a point eventually," Severus drawled.
"DNF'd" at 407 pages out of 715 and 57%. Had put this down for almost year and my ereader was rebooted at some point so lost my place. I'm currently reading this series and really enjoying experiencing the first for installments again. I'm already at 66% of installment 5 and I am planing to continue into this book right after.
I remember putting down this story because it spend to much to time on the world building and the "lore" behind Draco's wand.
Gilderoy’s vampire castle tragic story. Dantanian noir!!! Grindelwald’s scenes in the cell. Theo’s black dagger and hunting down draco, the chamber of secrets scene….
The orphean bargain is just….. so beautifully written. The story of the gravedigger’s daughters aaaa
What bothers me is how many secrets draco keeps from harry like hell no.
it was good, then got rlly uninterested and stopped reading for days. but then right when i picked it back up IT GOT GOOD?? A LITTLE TOO GOOD??? and now im just shocked and scared about the next book
Longest thing I’ve ever read and I did it in 8 days?! Lol Lost me in the middle for a while with that amount of backstory but the ending BROUGHT IT HOME. Never gasped so many times reading. Literally had to stop and just freak out for a bit …multiple times.
