“For the past ten years, I’ve been trying to think about what it means to have anxiety and to be Christian. And being a Christian wrestling with mental health in the modern world can be confusing, to say the least. What I found I wanted in the depths of anxiety was a way to see light again. I found it in the psalms—specifically, one of the simplest and shortest of the psalms. I found answers that helped move me away from the edges of anxiety towards the comfort of the Lord.” In this brief book, Guan Un turns away from superficial answers and quick fixes, looking instead to Psalm 131. He offers Christians dealing with anxiety disorders—and those who love these fellow believers—biblical truths to cling to when thoughts, feelings and life seem overwhelming.
Guan lives in Sydney’s inner west with Mary, two kids and a red dog. He studied at Moore College in order to write books, which confused just about everybody. Now, he’s a programmer and a writer of fiction and books like this one, and happily spends a lot of time behind a keyboard. He gets excited about a well-told story, a well-turned sentence, and a well-baked custard tart.
In a short 60 pages, Un unpacks Psalm 131 and illustrates what it means for us who experience anxiety. Un approaches the topic from personal experience of living in an anxious mind and provides biblical truths but also practical tips to ease the flood of anxious thoughts. Un doesn’t claim that the Bible should be able to ‘fix’ your anxiety and reminds us that doctors sometimes need to be seen which i found helpful. Un acknowledges you cannot just tell your thoughts to shut up.
Recommend for those who live in anxious minds or know people who do, which as the stats say that it’s almost 1/4 dealing with anxiety.
This quick read was recommended by a friend. It was interesting to read a book about anxiety, which focusses on one passage of the Bible, Psalm 131. This Psalm only has three verses and the author focuses on each deeply and how they can apply to everyday life with anxiety. The author also writes with the knowledge of what living with anxiety can be like, and includes personal experiences. It was really helpful to have a book explore how scripture can be a helpful reminder and comfort for anxiety and yet admits that this won't be a fix all. I would recommend this to any Christian who experiences anxiety, as well as those who know someone who struggles with anxiety.
Such a calming and lovely book. Based solely on the 131st psalm it breathes life back into lungs that are tired and worn out. I loved this reminder and will read again and again.
Appreciated the insight Un brings and the acknowledgement that these reminders and some strategies may or may not help individuals who struggle with anxiety.
It was helpful when he distinguishes the idea of anxiety linked with sin and when it's not.
More so, appreciated the focus of Psalm 131 as a guide and reminder of the promises of God- that the anxiety will not last, that we will have freedom come God's new kingdom.

I think there’s something powerful about having a book about anxiety written by someone who has it. It does not offer solutions, it offers comfort and ways to cope with it through the focus of Psalm 31. I like that it does not overload or overwhelm you with information and is a beautiful little book. I’d recommend it!
