In Griskol, magic and deceit are forbidden. And to practice any form of them could lead to death.
Holland doesn’t know who she is. For reasons she can’t explain, she’s drawn to the tragic story, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘢𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘯𝘥𝘭𝘦𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥, seeking to leave home and find where she belongs, even if it means disguising her identity—an action that could cost her everything.
Markus Fenn has always known his purpose: to farm the land his father left behind and to care for his aging mother and younger siblings. Unlike his best friend, Holland, he’s content with his lot in life.
But when a sinister plot rocks the country of Griskol, Holland finds herself in the middle of the chaos, and Markus’ familiar, rural life is upended in the midst of it. Griskol may have been right about magic all along.
In this epic tale of love and loss, accompanied by mermaids, fae, and dragons, will Holland find where she truly belongs? Or will she open her heart enough to realize her home has been with her this whole time?
Alissa J. Zavalianos grew up in New Hampshire and currently lives there with her wonderful husband, sweet daughter, and mischievous cat, Moo. As a child, she always had a love for nature, books, and fairy tales, and as she grew older, that love bloomed all the more. Alissa loves Jesus and is inspired by birds, mountains, castles, Tolkien, Lewis, and the way a cold breath of wind feels on her bare toes.
This story deals with grief, loss, and death. But even so, there is so much hope and light. Though this story is heavier than my usual, it still holds a cozy vibe, and the deep themes of hope amidst tragedy are its strong points.
My hope and prayer is that Holland and Markus' story touches you in some way, that it reminds you to cling to Jesus—our greatest Hope—even on the darkest nights.
Oh. My. Goodness. I loved Endlewood so much!! Alissa so masterfully crafted a story of love and loss, hope and despair, brokenness and redemption. Please do yourself a favor and buy yourself a copy of this amazing book!!
I had a few favorite quotes, but this one I wanted to share because it’s so, so good: “Sometimes we don’t understand why hard things happen to us, but we have to trust that it’s for a greater reason. That good can still come out of it even when it hurts.”
Updating this to 5 ⭐️ because, wow! This story hit even harder the second time around & it’s absolutely gorgeous! Alissa’s stories are not to be missed! 💛

A whimsical tale of love, loss, family, belonging, and hope!
I have been looking forward to reading this book since it came out, and it was truly lovely. (Also the cover is all surpassing gorgeousness! 😍)
The world building was well done and intriguing. It took me a little bit to conjure up a mental image, but once the pieces all fell into place, it was lovely.
As wonderful as the plot and world building were (though I felt a few details could have been fleshed out a bit more), the characters remain my favourite part. I love a good multiple POV story, and this one was no exception. Holland wants to see the world beyond the small scope of her life while her best friend Markus is content with the life he’s been given. Blend that together and you get an adventure you never bargained for. Plus, Markus and Holland’s romance is sweet. Benjamon…this boy was so precious! I wished he had more screen time. And Cal…oh, I was sooooo not okay with this! Elethün was just lovely.
There were a few plot twists, most of which I saw coming, but the one I didn’t realise initially had to do with the significance of the word “Endlewood.” I had an idea of what it was…but I was wrong. So that was a neat discovery.
In terms a of magic…there are mermaids, fae, dragons, a talking stag, certain people are wrongly accused of being witches, and there are couple spells. Magic is technically outlawed so it doesn’t show up much until later in the book. Plus, magic is also used loosely to represent hope - the thing we often fear and yet need. The light/darkness/hope theme was just beautiful!
There are so many stunning quotes in this book that I’m going to leave a couple below. :)
Now I’m eager to go and read Alissa’s other books!!
Quotes…
“‘I guess grief makes friends of us all.’”
"’We often are afraid to accept what is the truth. Or rather, we don't always know how. But it's the times when your mind is at its darkest where you must rely on the word of a friend to remind you of what you yourself forget. You don't feel it, but there is hope, and hope is its own kind of magic. It exists alongside despair. Much like the sun and the moon, you can't have one without the other.’”
"’Chin up, Markus. There is light yet on the horizon. It does not do well to let despair keep you from living nor dreams to keep you from facing reality. But hope. It is the greatest of friends. Don't be afraid to cling to it, for by it you will find solace in the midst of the darkest nights. Without hope, what else do you have?'’”
“We all have our stories - every one of them marked by fire.”
Another five star story great for anyone and everyone from Alissa Zavalianos!
Like all of Alissa's stories, Endlewood has the pleasant atmosphere of the hero’s journey, and Zavalianos’ classic but modernized Tolkien vibes, with the strongest moments in this tale reminding me of Galadriel and Samwise, although perfectly fitting for the setting and story.
"She'd lost something before she'd even had the chance to find it."
Holland is very relatable, struggling to find belonging and value in the midst of life’s disappointments and pain. Markus equally had great relatabiltity in his drive to achieve a dream, and the continuous fight for hope to achieve it.
"It was a kind of friendship which made saying goodbye hard."
I love the boy falls first trope so this romance hit me squarely in the feels! Right away, Markus and Holland have not only a great friendship, but potential for more! (Although I was very worried that Holland would realize it too late!) The love and friendship between them is so pure and wholesome, and definitely a great example to young readers of healthy love.
"A heart [...] needed love, and love had the power to do what fear could not. Restore. Forgive. Mend."
The world building was also exception, and I loved having a map to refer to as I followed Holland and Markus around the world of Griskol! Additionally the concept of “name-branding” was exceptionally brilliant and easy to understand and catch on to. There was a lot of depth and history in the world, which could be grasped even though the focus is tightly on our two main leads.
"There is still some light left in Griskol, though it be just a spark."
I was also so excited to see how The Tale of Endlewood would connect with Holland’s the entire time! It reminded me a little of Dearest Josephine (Caroline George), with how the main story was interrupted with bits of another story within the story.
"And what of mundane things? I'm convinced they are made up of magical moments, too."
On top of it all, Zavalianos did an amazing job at delivering with the plot! Sprinkled throughout were some clever hints and teasers, which all paid off with great twisting reveals that were so fun to uncover.
"You don't feel it, but there is hope, and hope is its own kind of magic. It exists alongside despair."
I am so glad to have Endlewood on my shelf! It is truly a story of Hope and Home, Loss and Love.
"It took courage to choose hope when all the heart wanted to remember was despair."
I should have gone to bed two hours ago but I stayed up reading the end of this book instead. I've got to get up early tomorrow. It is worth it... 100% worth it. The ending... AHH it's just so good🥰🥺
Ah no. I had a marvellous review but GoodReads ate it. 😭 I will retry although it will be much briefer now.
Endlewood is tragic tale indeed and aptly named “A tale of love, loss, and hope”. In this nature I’d say it’s rivaled only by the Children of Hurin. The characters weren’t so much relatable as they were real. Raw and realistic. Some of the themes here are that finding truth can come with a cost. Rooting out fear is a battle. And it also shows the extreme depths someone will sink to when love and joy are taken. But also the lengths one will go to to ensure it is restored or not taken again. The book was not at all what I’d imagined it to be from skimming a few reviews which all dubbed it a “cozy fantasy”. This book was many things but cozy isn’t a word I’d use for it. Initially I was puzzled as to where the tale would lead but by the end it came together absolutely beautifully.
Content: Romance: brief kisses Language: none Magic: Yes, there’s magic and several fae peoples. Violence: there’s violence, death, and destruction but not in any extreme detail.
In one word, Endlewood was wholesome. Characters with believable goals, relationships, and struggles that don’t revolve around self idolization.
I fell in love with all the characters. From the very beginning Holland’s determination, Markus’s selflessness, and Veesten’s mysteriousness. I adored the dystopian government vibes (meaning the government was super duper corrupt 😅)
AND THE SLOW BURN!!! Oh. My. Gosh. I was literally SQUELING. It was beyond perfect. And again, just so stinking wholesome. I’ve never read a fantasy novel with such a healthy romance and it was so so refreshing. Holland and Markus are GOALS. And I especially loved that they weren’t perfect. Markus never hesitated to forgive Holland (and the other way around.)
AND THE CHRISTIAN UNDERTONES 👏 👏 👏 Alissa perfectly tackled a story of hopelessness and hope while pointing everyone in the direction of Him. The magic system was so unique. I never felt like it was written to be an idol, or that the characters worshipped it.
So please go at least give Alissa a follow (if not for her, then for her amazing cat Moo) And if you feel so inclined, go get yourself a copy of this spectacular novel. (Although, a fair warning, you will be absolutely emotionally destroyed.)
Endlewood was a fantastic read, all around. It was such a wonderful story, with a much deeper meaning and purpose, that we all need reminded of from time to time. Trust me when I say, there is literally something for everyone in this book!
From the characters, their stories, their interactions and connections - everything, is so captivating! There is also a little mystery and suspense throughout the book, to which the author leaves little breadcrumbs for the reader to pick up along the way. I personally found myself on the edge of my seat, many times, just trying to solve the mystery before all of the pieces to the puzzle were given. It was also incredibly difficult not to skip ahead, when I knew the answer was only a few paragraphs away 😂. But I refrained, and I can assure you, I was not left disappointed. Needless to say, you won't be either.
All that said, this book was incredible. I loved each and every minute of it. In fact, each time I read one of the author's books, I have a new favorite, and this one is truly remarkable! I can't wait to read the next one. And do yourself a favor and READ THIS BOOK!
I bought this book after following the author on Instagram for some time. This wouldn't be my usual genre to read in although I don't stick to one genre, but it's been a long time since I read magic and fantasy. This was beautifully written and Alissa took me on Holland's journey with amazing description and heartfelt storytelling. The tension in the final chapters had me hooked and I love the thread of hope woven through. Hope is my favourite word and I loved some of Alissa's sentences filled with hopeful encouragement. Thank you Alissa
Recently I had been in the mood for a certain kind of book; it needed to contain magic, romance, traveling to new lands, and enchanting writing. Endlewood came to me at just the right time. Alissa J. Zavalianos right so beautifully and with such intention. I love what a love of story and the truth beauty and goodness that abounded in this book.
The main character is Holland and she knows that her life has always been missing something but she's not quite certain exactly what that is. She spends many thankless hours working as a seamstress for an employer that is a tyrant. The two main things that keep Holland going are her friendship with Markus and being lost in the pages of a book called The Tale of Endlewood.
It was a delight to follow along Holland's grand adventure!
This was a bit more plot driven than my typical read so definitely check this out if you enjoy plot driven novels.
First and foremost, I loved this book. It took me a while to read only because I moved things around and sort of lost the book. It happens, I’m a mom who is very busy.
Alissa is a master of writing stories that grip you and point you toward hope even in the midst of tragedy. This book was different in the way she created her story within a story and how beautifully it was woven. I honestly don’t know how to describe the book other than the tag line is completely correct. I’m still thinking of the characters even days later.
I cried. I laughed. I was so angry at times. But the characters felt real. The land felt real. I want to be friends with Markus and Holland.
Just read this book. It was so good. There were times when the characters reminded me so much of Tolkien’s world in LOTR, not in a copy cat way, but in a gentle, true way. I truly loved this book.
“You don’t feel it, but there is hope, and hope is its own kind of magic. It exists alongside despair. Much like the sun and the moon, you can’t have one without the other.”
Endlewood has been at the top of my tbr since before it released and I can tell you it didn’t disappoint!
I loved that the story touched on hard subjects like grief and the struggle of finding where you belong, but it didn’t fixate on it. Through all the darkness the characters walk through there is that thread of hope weaved through it.
The world building was very well done— I felt like I had a good sense of what Griskol looked and felt like.
As for the romance, I am a sucker for a good friends to lovers trope, and I loved getting to know Holland and Markus and getting to watch their sweet romance unfold!
If you are looking for a clean fantasy/romance, this is definitely a good one!
So this is the 3rd book of Alissa’s I have read and she genuinely never disappoints!! This book was so captivating and left me wanting more!! It has it all!
Friends to lovers ✅ No spice ✅ Magic ✅ Amazing Plot ✅ Beautiful underlying themes, such as dealing with loss and forgiveness✅
I cannot wait to continuing reading more of this authors books, if you are looking for clean fantasy, I will recommend her 1000 times!
Endlewood blew me away. A YA fantasy novel, this one will take you on an adventure through a wonderfully crafted fictional world and the lives & hearts of its endearing characters. I don’t often read fantasy, but escaping into this story was a breath of fresh air. This one checked all the boxes for me!
This is a must read. It is very well written, captivating and hard to put down once you start reading it. I loved all the twists and turns amongst Holland’s journey in self discovery. The message of hope in the midst of despair shines through. Alissa Z. found the magic touch with this book!
From the author of The Earth-Treader and The Wishing Seed comes a tale that weaves the themes of family, belonging, and identity in a whimsical young adult fantasy. Zavalianos handles the tough obstacles of growing up, loneliness, and atoning for the past with a soft touch reminiscent of a children's story. Like all of Zavalianos' work, this book breathes an aesthetic, this one of warm summer sun beneath forest eaves amid a culture inspired by medieval and folklore traditions. Looking for your next cozy high fantasy read? This one is it!
Actual review: 3.5 stars rounded to 4 I greatly enjoyed reading this final version of this story. I was an early reader and so seeing this final version was a treat, especially seeing how far this story had come. One of the joys of being with an author from their first book is seeing how much they grow and change as they learn and improve. While The Earth-Treader is still my favorite of Zavalianos' works, I could definitely tell her voicing has grown stronger, her characters more fully developed, and especially the action had improved by bounds since her debut. That said, I feel that this story could have reached a fuller potential. I say this merely because I'm a notoriously picky reader and I feel personally there was more that could have been fully-fledged out story-wise. I especially wish that it had been better proofread, maybe it was just the edition I had, but in a couple of places it was distracting. Nonetheless, this is a book I will treasure, especially having been a part of its coming about, and eagerly look forward to Zavalianos' next release!
I really enjoyed Endlewood! It was a nice clean adventure-fantasy story with a side of romance. Here are some of my favorite quotes:
"Our greatest weapons are our words which can create and destroy as much as any sword."
"But wasn't that the power of stories? They had the ability to span realms and time, making one feel less alone through their relatable characters."
"Sometimes we don't understand why hard things happen to us, but we have to trust that it's for a greater reason. That good can still come out if it even when it hurts."
"A heart didn't need fortified walls made out of fear. No. It needed love, and love had the power to do what fear could not. Restore. Forgive. Mend."
I am so thankful to be one of Alissa’s beta readers for this book! Endlewood gives such a message of hope and beauty. I admire how Alissa is able to weave in the depth and meaning into words that form a great story. The variety of dynamics and relationships between characters is one of the many favorite things about this book. I found it easy to follow along in the lives of the characters, and it felt like I was cheering them on with every page! If you enjoy mysterious magic, renewed identity, and love–this story is the perfect read for you.
This was a very sweet fantasy book about Holland who is a girl without a family in a world torn by strife between classes and disbelief in magic. Holland has a strong desire for justice and believes there is more in the world which leads her to leave all she knows to find a better life. Through her journey she finds her family, a sweet relationship, and how to hope amidst difficulties. I really appreciated how Zavalianos weaved threads of grief into her characters so you see how they responded to difficult circumstances of their lives.
Holland and Markus <3 // some twists and turns along the way that were epic, but also foreshadowed well // I started to have a sneaking suspicion about one of the big twists about halfway through and was quite excited when I turned out to be right // definitely some tragedy in there that I won't soon get over // loved the world-building // caught a lot of similarities to themes found in LOTR // overall, very much enjoyed
“You don’t feel it, but there is hope, and hope is its own kind of magic. It exists alongside despair. Much like the sun and moon, you can’t have one without the other.” 🌙
The Tale of Endlewood an intricate one, a vivid one; it’s layered, with a storyline that you don’t quite put together until the big “aha!” moment (seriously, I whooped out loud, paused, and had to stare up at the ceiling for a solid 5 minutes to try and process it). It’s woven with themes of brotherhood, hope, belonging, and the “enduring all things” kind of love. The desires and burdens of the characters were detailed beautifully, and I became fully invested early on. When dragons were mentioned, I couldn’t help but whisper a little “yesss” to myself. Let’s be honest, what fantasy story is complete without dragons?!
After I’d blown through the whole book in the span of a weekend, I wrote to the author, saying, “You’ve added a world to all the kingdoms in my mind - all the ones that keep me loving goodness, and put the fight back in my heart.” As I was typing those words, I realized just how true they were: Now, alongside lands such as Narnia, Anniera, Middle Earth, Araluen, Natalia, and many others, there is now Griskol. There is Endlewood. And oh, I do hope you take the time to visit. It comes with a 5/5 recommendation from this girl.
Alissa, thank you for this tale, which has taken root and done good things in my heart. Truly, this magic has been wielded well.
I found this book very intriguing, hard to put down, moving, exciting, and it got all the emotions going. I would highly recommend this book. I loved it!
Such a sweet story! I adored Markus & Holland so much. A cozy fantasy with notes of the whimsy and magic of Howl's Moving Castle, Endlewood is a timeless tale full of wisdom and charm. I particularly enjoyed the snippets from the old text Holland read —The Tale of Endlewood. It gave the world such a rich, vibrant feeling. Near the end I found myself hoping the author would give us that little snippet of married life & children I always crave after the end of a spectacular fictional romance (and yet is so often missing in modern fiction) and she did not disappoint! My heart! I think I melted a little inside.
The plot was incredibly tight and kept my interest the entire time. And while I didn't feel as able to connect with the characters written in third person as well as the first person snippets, I found this book to be a thoroughly enjoyable read: one I will be rereading soon, as well as sharing with my future daughters.
“But hope. It is the greatest of friends. Don’t be afraid to cling to it, for by it you will find solace in the midst of the darkest nights. Without hope, what else do you have?”
To say I loved this book would be an understatement. I’m having trouble putting my thoughts into words. This was such a wholesome tale full of adventure and hope. I fell in love with Markus and Holland from the beginning. Their relationship was so sweet and slowly evolved from friendship into a healthy romantic relationship. The characters in this book suffered so much loss, yet most of them never lost their hope. I LOVED the epilogue. It was everything I was hoping to see and much more.
**this book is a sweet closed door romance. There is violence, but it isn’t overwhelming or gruesome
Endlewood is such a fantastically crafted tale! I read this book within days! I was completely riveted with Holland and Markus’ story, I couldn’t put it down and had to know what happened next. Zavalianos manages to capture the deepest desires of the characters, while also relating it to the reader. By the end of the story I had such a profound and personal connection to Holland that it made me love the story even more. Get lost in this beautiful story of young love, heartbreak, and personal discovery, you won’t be disappointed.
