Brynn Escape. That was my sole focus. Forget the headlines, forget the threats. Forgetting what I’ve done? Never. To disappear, I needed money. I fled the big city in the desert to hide in a small town amongst the pines. The plan? Blend in, work until I have what I need, and then vanish. The problem? Connor Vale ruined everything. Falling for him would be easy, if it weren't for one inescapable For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, and nobody around me is safe. Connor Brynn Montgomery slammed into my life like a category five hurricane. She stepped in front of my truck, and everything changed. One second to swerve, one second to jump from my vehicle, one second to never be the same. I gave her a job. It wasn't a smart idea. She’s guarded, withdrawn, and aloof. She wears shirts with snarky sayings and won’t let me get within a foot of her. She doesn’t talk much, so I watch her move. Unspoken pain pours from her eyes, emotion moves with each twist of her lips. Hidden behind her prickly exterior is a tenderness that mesmerizes me. Every day she reveals a piece of herself. Every day I get closer to learning about the fear that grips her. Every day I fall a little more in love with her.
Jennifer Millikin is a two-time recipient of the Readers Favorite award. She writes contemporary fiction with elements of romance, emotion, and hard-learned lessons. Her characters are flawed and authentic, and some parts of her stories are more fact than fiction.
My 1st book by this author. It took me completely by surprise.
I liked this story a lot. Unusual plot with barely used storyline (what happened to the heroine), well-written characters, atypical decent hero (not a manwhore or jerk *finally!*). Maybe a bit naïve, but still poignant.
Safe! No detailed sex-scenes, which didn’t bother me at all.
I won’t spoil the story, I only tell, that despite hurt and depression it’s selfish and very cruel to involve innocent people in your ‘life-changing’ acts!!! Just NO!!!
It’s on KU, I would highly recommend.
I will check other book’s by this author and I hope Cassidy’s story is next ;-)
For those who are interested: There is just the right amount of sex in this book to match the seriousness. They are not all fade to black and they are not explicit. This really isn’t an erotic romance. What it is however is safe. Hero is not a manwhore, heroine is sufficiently experienced to be confident in her skin.
I had a hard time rating this one. Jennifer Millikin's writing is very good - her prose has a poetic quality to it that I really enjoy, and her dialogue is fantastic. But the pace in this book felt very slow to me, and I just didn't click with the characters or their story. That it took me a week to read this book is telling...
This was another good read in the series. I liked the suspense part of the story. Although, we all knew that it would all go back to her past. However, I was glad that she met Walt and Connor. They both really helped her get her life back on track. Plus I think she was good for Walt in the end too.
This is the third book in standalone series, The Time. It is a contemporary romance.
Escaping from a threat which is from a result of a tragic accident, Brynn moves to a small town to hide and recoup. Knowing her stay is for a short while she looks for a cash in hand job so she can earn enough to move again to be with her parents in Mexico. Luckily she bumps into Connor who runs the local handyman business in town who offers her a casual job assisting him.
This story had plenty of drama, action and romance. I loved the development of a romance between Connor and Brynn which at first was a slow burn due to the hesitancy to trust on Brynn’s part. Brynn was a refreshing character type and I adored how she drew the best out of everyone she met, especially prickly old man Walt.
If you love small town romances with a touch of suspense, slow build romance and fun elements so plenty of light and shade in the storyline, then this is one for you. Four stars.
ARC kindly provided by the author to Foxylutely via Hidden Gems
This was my least favorite of the series, but I still just adored the story because Jennifer wrote it and her words are crack. I don't know if it was my mood or if it was just that the stories in the first two just hit more emotionally, but either way if you love anything she wrote you'll still enjoy this one.
Brynn is running away from a horrific accident that happened to her and to create a new life. Connor is just living his quiet life, looking for a muse to paint again after heartbreak. Brynn needs a job and Connor needs an employee....they have a temporary arrangement when they realize the attraction is too strong and well, we all know how that goes. This whole series together was amazing, they are all quick reads with SO much in them. Highly recommend.
This is unlike any romance I have read. There are three POV's. This makes the telling of the story so much more emotionally charged. I really liked this book. This focuses on a tragedy that happened to a young woman, that only took one second to happen. Our brave and strong heroine, Elizabeth Brynn Montgomery, is running from the horrible consequences of an accident that was not her fault. In the court of public opinion, she was slaughtered, demonized and someone is out to make her pay. She has been receiving threatening letters and she know it's time to go and hide away. She goes by Brynn now, trying to hide her identity. She is an intelligent, bright, charismatic and loving individual. Now all of that is buried by fear, terror, nightmares and danger. She leaves the desert of Phoenix for the pine trees of Brighton in southern Arizona. She wants to be alone, hide and not be found. But she need money to further her escape from the person hunting her. She needs a job. Brynn does not want to make friends, it would hurt to much to make an emotional connection. So, she decides to act like an ice queen to keep people away. Our hero, Connor Vale is a genuine, accepting person. He meets Brynn under unusual circumstances and offers her a job. When Brynn cannot find employment anywhere, she calls Connor and accepts to be his assistant handyman. Connor tries the normal ways to get to know Brynn, but is met with angry, hostile and a resistant attitude. Connor does not hide his confusion. When his best friend Anthony tells him to pay attention to Brynn's nonverbal messages, her body language, he will probably learn more about her. Connor can't help being attracted to Brynn. She is an enigma to him and he wants to solve the puzzle. Brynn starts to open up to Connor and begins to be herself for a moment or two. She then is back to being the ice queen. People want to befriend her but is shirks back when anyone gets close to her. Her neighbor, Cassidy and her daughter, Brooklyn try to befriend her, but to no avail. Connor takes her out to dinner with his friend Anthony and his girlfriend Julia. Brynn and Julia hit it off and she starts to show her real self. Connor realizes now that Brynn has been hurt badly. He desperately wants to comfort her and protect her but she has all these defenses up that he doesn't know how to get around. Little does he know that just by being himself is slowly getting through Brynn's defenses. When Brynn realizes that Connor has worked his way into her life, she is not sure what to do. Should she let whatever is going to happen, happen? Or will she lock him out? She lets Connor's attention happen to her and when the time is right, she tells him everything. She expects him to judge her like everyone else but he does not. He stays with her, comforting her and tries to give her the emotional support she needs. Brynn befriends a grumpy old man in the neighborhood named Walt. Everyone warns her away from Walt but Brynn will not be swayed from getting to know the old man. She is able to get through to Walt and he acts like he can barely tolerate her. But she knows he is just a lonely old man who could use a friend and they do become friends. Connor is amazed at the other side of Brynn she barely ever shows. There is the angry Brynn and the gentle and nice Brynn. He is not sure which he like better. Brynn finally becomes personally involved with Connor. She knows she must move on to her next destination. But she does not really want to leave Connor or Walt behind. So she breaks off everything with Connor and quits working for him. Then the unthinkable happens. She did not know when her location was uncovered but she is in danger all over again. The person stalking her and sending the threatening letters has found her, bound her and threatens her life with a gun. When Connor and Walt agree that something is wrong, Walt goes to investigate and is drawn into the danger. Walt is eighty-two and knows what evil is. What he sees before him is not evil but desperation and the need to blame someone. Walt is determined to help Brynn anyway he can. He tackles the perpetrator and at the same time Connor is there at the door followed by the police and ambulances. Will Brynn continue on her way or will she stay? Will Connor fight to keep her with him or respect her choice to be free to leave? I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book via Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving a review.
"I received an ARC copy of this book." This was a fantastic book. Loved Brynn and Connor. The chemistry between them was through the roof. So much happened to Bryan to change her life and Connor tried to help by giving her a job. But as always they start to fall for each other.
Emotionally gripping, traumatically sad, yet filled with hope
The Lifetime of a Second by Jennifer Millikan is a wonderfully well written book. The story of Brynn and Connor grabs you in an iron fist from the first word. I was enthralled and did not want to put this one down until the end. The characters themselves are equal parts somber and silly. When they have light hearted moments they are adorable! Brynn and Connor together are sweet and so real. Jennifer Millikan finds a nice balance of serious, fun and a bit of suspense and danger too. Overall an excellent book with an exciting resolution and an extra special HEA. I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book via Hidden Gems and voluntarily share my honest thoughts and review.
Overall this was a great series!! Each books writing got better and more developed. I loved how the author tied the characters from each book into the next. This was probably the best book in the series!
Brynn goes to the small town of Brighton to escape. And to hide. Her goal is to get a job and earn enough money to get to her parents in Mexico and put as much distance between herself and a traumatic event that forever changed her life. She doesn’t plan on making friends to socialize with, or befriending her crotchety widower neighbor, Walt, and she definitely doesn’t plan on Connor. Connor is an artist whose muse has taken a back seat to his stepping in to run his father's handyman business. Since business picked up Connor needs an assistant and finds himself offering the job to the woman who stepped out in front of his moving truck and causing a impromptu meeting between truck and fire hydrant. He’s not sure what to make of the prickly, closed off Brynn, because Connor sees something deeper to her which confuses him.
This is a new author to me, but I was intrigued by the concept of this book when I came across the chance to read an early copy of it. The idea of pivotal moments changing the course of our lives is something that often goes unnoticed. It’s something Brynn is never able to forget, because one second destroyed the life she knew, and another second gave her a life she never imagined. Brynn and Connor's story is a terrific read with a bit of angst, but more so, an undercurrent of pain, fear and longing, which are things both characters deal with to varying degrees.
This work is beautifully, skillfully written to evoke a deep array of emotion in the reader. If you’re looking for smexy times, you won’t find that here. What you will find is real life challenges and problems, and characters who are authentic, endearing, and relatable as they navigate outside conflicts and their relationship with each other. Brynn and Connor easily worked their way into my heart and I was fully invested in their happily ever after. Connor gave Brynn a birthday gift that basically said “I love you and I’ll keep you safe, even though I can’t keep you in my life.” And the letter that accompanied it? Knife through the heart. It was corny and awkward, precious and sincere, and made my soul ache for the love that it looked like they would never share.
But this is contemporary romance, so of course things work out, although I was a little worried there for a minute. With an interesting twist at the end, it served to communicate the bigger message, that it only takes a second to forgive, and that second can also change your life. I adored these characters, including the ornery, wise, heroic Walt, and wasn’t nearly ready to let them go. I loved everything about this book except the fact that it ended, and wholeheartedly recommend this phenomenal, heartfelt, inspiring read.
*I reviewed this book freely and voluntarily, having made no commitment to provide a review and receiving no compensation of any kind from any source for this review.
Running from the terrible events in her recent past, Brynn hides herself away in a small Arizona town. Devastated by her guilt and isolated from others due to bad media coverage, she lives alone and in fear that her past will catch up with her. When she is nearly run down by Connor in the street, little does she know that that one second will alter her life forever.
Planning to run and do penance for the harm she has caused, Brynn cannot deny her attraction to Connor and the pair begin a steamy affair. An artist at heart, Connor is once again inspired to create by the emotions evoked during his time with Brynn. Brynn finally feels the desolation and loneliness of her life ease as she spends more time with Connor. Despite their deepening connection, she still believes that she can walk away and hide from her past. As Brynn settles in and becomes more relaxed in her adopted hometown, against her better judgement, she also begins to forge new and genuine relationships with her neighbors. Her loneliness and naturally outgoing personality won't allow her to remain solitary for long.
When her past finally does catch up with her, Brynn and her newfound friends will have to fight to save her life. It's amazing how one poor decision or one second in time can have such a profound impact on one's life.
Brynn is snarky, independent and strong. Connor, while very masculine, is also caring and emotionally open. Watching him draw Brynn out of her self-imposed exile made for an enjoyable read. The heat between these two characters is off the charts and the development of their relationship seems natural and realistic within the context of the storyline. Overall a lovely and thought-provoking romance read that makes the reader ruminate on those important seconds in their own life.
There are several triggers in this book that may make it an uncomfortable read in some cases including discussion of post-partum depression, chronic illness and suicide. These references, however, reflect the reality of the challenges most of us face throughout our lives.
I received an ARC of the story for a voluntary, honest review of the story.
Brynn Montgomery has faced the worst court in the nation, the court of Public Opinion. She will never have the life she had before the “accident” as her therapist calls it. She can’t even begin to know what she is supposed to do now. When the threatening letters start arriving she knows she must flee to keep her family safe.
Connor Vale was an up and coming painter until life handed his family Parkinson’s disease. He knew then he had to step up and take over his father’s business and carry on his legacy. It pains him to see the shell of a man his father has become and the lengths his mother must go to keep them both thriving. His life was pretty mundane until a beautiful woman walked in the path of his truck.
Brynn and Connor realize they need each other. To feel normal again and forget what life has handed them lately. Brynn knows she is moving on so there is no way to get her feelings too involved where Connor is concerned. Making new friends along the way like Walt, leave her feeling a little more like herself.
Connor doesn’t know how to reach Brynn, to really know who she is. When she finally confides in him, he understands her need for secrecy. Will he be able to let her go when she is ready to fly the coop?
As with Magic Minutes (my first Jennifer Milliken read) this book is wonderfully woven with each persons POV and even a 3rd from Walt (who I love by the way). Brynn and Connor are not perfect but together they show what a “perfect” life could look like.
I received a copy of The Lifetime of a Second without expectations for review. Any and all opinions stated are my own. 4 ½ stars for this true to life read from Ms. Milliken
4 stars for The Lifetime of a Second by Jennifer Millikin. This is the third book in The Time Series. It is a standalone, so you do not have to read the others first. This is my first book from this author and I thought it was extremely good. It was well written and provided me with all the feels love to get while reading. I was a little surprised at how good I thought this book was. I would consider this book to be a slow burn small town romance, with a little bit of romantic suspense thrown in. Brynn has decided to escape to the small town of Brighton. She is trying to get as far away from the traumatic event that changed her life. There is also a threat that comes with this event and it is out to get her. She wants to get enough money to get to Mexico with her Mom and dad. She does not want to make friends, or even socialize with anyone. She decides to put on an ice queen front so no one can get close. What she doesn’t expect is Connor. Connor is an artist , who runs the local handy man business. He decides to hire Brynn. He does not trust her at first and is leery of the attitude she is always putting out there. However, Connor can not deny he is attracted to her and sees something in her behind the front she is putting on. The development between these is what makes this story what it is. This story has all the feels , it has attraction, chemistry, drama and suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Brynn and Connor. I will say whoever the cover artist is for this book is fantastic. The cover is that caught my eye. It made me want to dive into this story with out even reading the blurb. I had to know what this story was about and man am I glad I read it.
How your life can change in a single second. This is an emotional read about one women whose life forever changed in a second. She is running away and hiding all because of that one second. She makes a pit stop in a small town, where she hopes is far enough away that no one will know her, until she can make enough money to run even further away. In an almost deja vu moment, she meets a man that will change her life once again.
This is a pretty somber read, though there is some comic relief throughout, as to not get too heavy. The characters are complex and well rounded. Both the Hero and Heroine are strong and smart and have good hearts. You'll fall in love with them instantly.. and that love grows as the story moves along. There are some side characters that are fun too. While this is a romance, a good portion of the book deals with the Heroine and her troubles, and her finding a way to move on. There are some sensitive topics covered that may be triggers. Postpartum depression and suicide for starters. I feel like these things were written in a good way, and almost acted as a PSA. It wasn't written in a preachy kind of way or overbearing. It brought attention to, and sympathy to the subjects.
The book itself is well written and alternates between the two POVs. It's read easily and quickly.
Definitely a good read, esp. for but not limited to the summer months.
Characters? Brynn, our heroine, is running from her recent past; she is usually an outgoing person but that has changed since the incident. Now, she is on the run, trying not to get too close to anyone. I would describe her as a friendly person who doesn't judge and doesn't listen to gossip (largely cause of what the media did to her), which I loved.
The hero is trying to support his parents by keeping their business running while also trying to find his muse again and paint. Then he meets this mysterious girl and you can see that he is hooked after their second encounter. He is not the broody type but rather a happy-go-lucky kinda guy. He is no sarcastic manwhore but rather the rhyming son-in-law every Mom is looking for.
Plot? Good idea. Involves some issues or rather one specific issue I have not come across often in romance novels. Interesting background story of the heroine Set in a charming small town where everyone knows everyone. Not so sure if the handyman business that the hero has got going is that lucrative but hey... No other men/women drama (even though an ex appears briefly)
Writing style? Safe (mostly). Some minor mistakes. Wasn't that hooked by it but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Some issues were hinted at but not really elaborated on.
Elizabeth “Brynn” Montgomery lived in a big city and was living it up as a promotor for night clubs. She had lots of friends and loved to party, but her entire life changes forever in a split second when a horrific tragedy strikes her. While cleared of any wrong doing, Elizabeth’s own self-inflicted guilt causes her to move away from all that she knows. Her plan is to keep a low profile, and find a new place to live temporarily where no one knows her and make some money before she finally moves to Brazil…a place where no one will know her or what she has done. Unfortunately things don’t go as she planned. When she takes a job as a handyman’s assistant, the last thing she expected was to fall in love with him! Connor knows that this beautiful, brash woman that he hired to help him is hiding something and he’s determined to find out and help her. What neither of them expected was to fall in love, at the same time Brynn’s past catches up with her and threatens both of them! Great story line and characters development…must read!
This is one of those rare books that forces you to think about how interconnected our lives are with everyone we meet, even if the associations are brief. Brynn is fleeing from a split-second tragedy in which she was a victim yet she was treated as the villain. Her own guilt and the blame that is foisted upon her keep her closed up and unable to trust, to feel safe.
Another chance meeting lands her squarely in Connor's path, and even though she's not able to open up, he sees a spark of hope in her eyes and he doesn't give up on her. This story is so much more than a romance, though the romance is sweet, touching, and beautiful on its own. This is also about the community that, one by one, shows Brynn that she's worth a second chance.
This is a thought-provoking, deeply emotional journey where the lines between good and evil aren't so easily discerned. It's a story you don't want to miss. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
This story is both tragic and eye opening. Things for Brynn couldn’t be harder than they are right now, she’s living a life of fear and is finding it harder to breathe daily. When she and Connor start working together, you can tell when she really starts to relax more, and her relationship with Walt is amazing. As the Love starts coming through so obviously, she’s scared to keep going and starts to back off more and more, but wheneverything catches up, she has a choice to make and it will break everyone’s heart...it did mine as well. This story is a great way to make people take note and listen about the issues at hand as well, it really made me think back a lot and also answered some of my questions I had from way back when once I actually did a little research. Thank you for an amazing story! I’m voluntarily reviewing an advanced reader copy of this book.
I think this is my favorite book in the series. Brynn's life changes in a split second. She escapes her old life and the spotlights. She is hiding from something. What is it, and does it find her? Seeking anonymity, Brynn doesn't count on love to find her. This book touched my heart because it talked about how we must take the time to reach out to those around us. One kind word can make all of the difference in the world. We just never know whose lives we touch.
The books in the series are not connected, but characters are briefly mentioned from previous books. Aubrey's mother from the first book came up in this one. I would have really liked to see her have closure. Life isn't always tidy like that, I know, but I still wish this closure would have happened.
So I’ve loved this entire series. I only have one complaint through out all of it. Why don’t we ever find out why Jane actually left? All three stories are intertwined and when the chance comes up again this last story, between Jane and brynn, we still don’t find out.
I feel like Jane’s departure shaped who Aubrey was in so many ways and it hurt her so deeply. When she sees her and then goes back for her but again leaves, we’re left wondering. Then Brynn talks with her in a heart to heart and she just says something cryptic and then even asks if she knows Aubrey, but the story still isn’t told. I just think we were all questioning why she left and we should have got some sort of closure there.
Minus that I feel like this series was fantastic. I could read more about every couple and what more they do in their lives. I loved it.

In that one second, everything changed. Life as Elizabeth knew it ceased to exist. Judged, ridiculed, and splattered across headlines. Nothing will ever be the same.
Brynn is on a mission to disappear. A short stop, in a nowhere town, to earn some money and reach her destination. A split second decision sets her in a new path she doesnt see coming.
Connors life is altered forever by a stranger...
What moment in time changed everything for you? This story is about that one second where life as they knew it was no more. This one, is a story more people need to hear. Be present in your own life. Pay attention to those around you. Life changes in a blink of an eye.
This was a great easy flowing read. I loved all the characters in this story. I love how the story develop and you came to understand all the characters better learning their stories. I felt sad for Elizabeth “Brynn” having to experience and go through the tragedy and aftermath that she did. Then escaping to a new town and at first being misunderstood. I love how she found Connor and how their story develops. I loved Walt and how spunky and misunderstood he was and how is character developed overtime. I love the exchange he had between Brynn and Conner. This story overall was well told and great. I loved this whole time series and I don’t want to divulge too much about the book because you definitely should read it. It is a definite great quick read for me

What a truly wonderful book! This is my first in the series and I feel I have missed out as this one was so well written. Right from the start I was hooked, it had me interested in not only what would happen but also in all the characters; Walt especially was just wonderful. This story is full of sadness, sorrow, grief, guilt, depression, anger, distress, hope, faith, survival, family love, loyalty of friends and of course love.
I love a story that takes me on a journey, that makes me think deeply and makes me feel - this did all that and more! Simply put I finished this book and thought wow! I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an ARC.
4.5 Stars!! There is Brynn who is running from her past and the person who holds her responsible for a tragic event. She goes to a small town and ends up falling in love with her boss and really gets attached to some of the towns people. Her goal was to make enough money to be able to leave the country. What will she do when her past catches up to her? When her secrets come out, will she leave what she has built? What feels like home? Start over again? This book has good main and secondary characters and builds good relationships and repour. This is an easy one-click for a summer escape.
I voluntarily wrote this review from reading an advanced copy of this book.
Another heart wrenching story in this series. Brynn suffers an unimaginable event in her past and the horrible backlash that damages her and forces her to leave. Just barely managing, she runs into Connor who stirs up feelings that belonged to her old self that no longer exists. Their battling personalities and prejudgements of each other leads them down a path of an odd pairing but yet an even bigger bond that they both fight. The story builds along with their dysfunctional yet extremely beautiful relationship, even if we are the ones who see it first. Definitely worth a read. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I received this book from Hidden Gems and l am volunteering to leave this review.
This is the third book in the series and can be read as a standalone.
This is a romance book with a great storyline and was well written. Brynn was hiding out to make money and overcome her guilt for an accident she was involved in but wasn’t her fault. Connor was an artist who had to take over his families business after his father got sick. Both have issues to deal with, neither wanted to fall in love.
This was a well written book with great characters, l will be going back and reading the first two books in this series as l really enjoyed this book.
