For fans of Laura Childs and Amanda Flowers, it’s teatime in Raven Creek—but a murder at the The Earl’s Study sets the stage for an intoxicating brew of small-town chicanery with a hint of the supernatural.
Phoebe Winchester’s beloved aunt Eudora has a taste for adventure—and a knack for making magical tea. It’s even rumored that she just might be a witch. So when Eudora passes away and leaves everything to her niece—her Victorian mansion, her bookshop/tea store, The Earl’s Study, and one very chubby orange cat named Bob—Phoebe gets more than she bargained for. And she knows she’s in deep when a dead man is found on the shop’s back step, apparently killed while trying to break in.
Two suspects immediately emerge among the townspeople of Raven Creek, Washington. There’s village busybody Dierdre Miller, who seems desperate to buy Eudora’s house, and handsome PI Rich, one of Phoebe’s childhood friends—but how well does she really know him after all these years apart?
Phoebe knows she should leave it to the professionals, but as she starts to dig into the underbelly of Raven Creek, she begins to uncover the truth about Eudora. What’s more, her aunt might not have been the only witch in the family, as Phoebe soon discovers she has unique and unexpected gifts of her own.
Now, it’s just a matter of putting her newfound power to the test and cast a spell that could catch a killer.
Gretchen Rue lives in the Canadian prairies, which affords her ample time to read during six months of winter. She plays cat mom to four mostly indifferent fur children, and plant mom to roughly 100 very demanding flora. When she isn’t sipping tea and working on her next novel, she enjoys swimming, hiking, and watching baseball.
Phoebe Winchester had arrived in Raven Creek to the home where her Aunt Eudora had lived before her death, and where Phoebe remembered a childhood of happiness. Now she'd inherited the house as well as The Earl's Study, a bookstore/tea shop which Eudora had owned. She also inherited Bob, the orange cat, who would keep her company in the big old house. Phoebe knew her aunt was famous for her teas, the different blends and flavours she would mix and she hoped to continue the tradition.
When the bookshop had only been open a couple of days, a dead body was found in the back alley. It seemed he'd been about to break into Phoebe's shop. The police were in the search for his killer, questioning everyone, when Phoebe discovered not only that Eudora was a witch, she herself had witchy gifts as well. Could Phoebe flesh out the killer? She was discovering astonishing things about her aunt - what else would she find out?
Steeped to Death by Gretchen Rue is the 1st in the Witches' Brew Mystery series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. A bit of magic, a devilish plot, bad guys, delicious tea and other concoctions - plus recipes at the back! What more could you want? I'm really looking forward to the next in the series and recommend this one highly.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
An enjoyable first book in a new series about witches. Phoebe Winchester has just inherited a house, a bookshop/ tea store and a cat called Bob from her Aunt Eudora whom she discovers was a witch. More importantly she begins to discover witchy tendencies in herself.
Soon after she arrives to take possession of her inheritance Phoebe has to deal with a very unpleasant real estate agent, an unexpected tenant and a dead body. Her work is cut out trying to find out what is going on in the small town she wants to make her own.
I enjoyed the characters and the story very much. I was surprised Phoebe exhibited such strong magic so early in the piece but it does suggest there will be a lot of excitement in the next few books. The required romantic interest is also very much to the fore. I look forward to more books in the series.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This was an enchanting start to a new mystery series! Main character Phoebe Winchester has just inherited a spooky gothic mansion and cozy tea/bookshop from her Aunt Eudora in Raven Creek, Washington. Yep, I spent a good portion of the book trying to figure out a way to jump inside. My dream! The descriptions of the brews and baked goods were to die for.
The mystery comes into play when a deceased man is found outside Phoebe's store, possibly murdered as he was trying to break in. What was he after, and who wanted him dead? Phoebe also discovers that Eudora was a witch (that tidbit wasn't just a town rumor), and she may have inherited more than just an estate from her dear aunt.
This was an enjoyable read with a little magic, romance, and a solid mystery element. Plus a delightful cat named Bob! I can't wait for the next book. If you love witchy/paranormal cozies be sure to pick this one up.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A fantastic ‘good witch’ cozy debut that easily gained a 5 Star rating from me! Complimented by a great cast of characters, an inviting setting, an interesting inheritance, and a nifty occupation, the mystery checks all the boxes for a perfect score.
Phoebe Winchester inherits her Auntie Eudora’s estate including her cat, Bob; a charming Victorian house; and a bookshop/tea room, The Earl’s Study located in Raven Creek, Washington. As soon as Phoebe arrives in town, a Dierdre Miller begins to bully her about selling her Auntie’s house. Phoebe’s answer is “No”.
As Phoebe decides to continue with Eudora’s mixing of ‘special tea blends’, she realizes Eudora was a witch! The story moves along quickly with humor frequently blended into the scenes. I enjoyed the shorter chapters which always help a story flow faster.
A dead body is found outside The Earl’s Study’s back door. It’s a man Phoebe saw with Dierdre. Phoebe uses a ‘truth serum’ herbal mix to test if Dierdre Miller’s involved with the murdered man. It works well! A nearby store owner, Owen Talbot, seems overly eager about Phoebe’s plans for The Earl’s Study, as well.
Phoebe is having coffee with her upstairs tenant, Rick, when she realizes she’s also a witch. Talk about surprised! Going through Eudora’s things in the house, Phoebe discovers hidden papers and realizes what Dierdre is after. The killer reveal is a great scene, and the ending is satisfactory. An excellent cozy mystery!
I honestly reviewed an unedited digital arc provided by NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books. All opinions are my own.
I’m grateful to Laura and to Margie whose reviews and messages inspired me to try this book. I am not usually a fan of “witchy” books and I hadn’t been planning to try this series. I’m glad that I read this first book and I plan to continue to read the rest of the series. I enjoyed the book and not because it was in spite of the fantasy element. I ended up liking the fantasy aspect. It was a page-turner; I wanted to keep reading it and was eager to get back to it.
There are some wonderful characters, humans and cat (I’ve never met an orange male cat I haven’t loved) and settings. Yes, the settings are also characters. The story takes place in a fictional town in the Northwest and it’s reminiscent of some of the English village mysteries, which is a compliment coming from me.
I’ll be reading these for the people and the places but the mystery in this one was interesting. Since I have read a lot of mystery books and more often than not guess the culprit before the reveal, and even though fair hints were given for this story, I did not guess the right person in this book, and I was glad to be surprised.
This is a “just for fun” kind of book but it is great fun, entertaining and enjoyable. It’s heartwarming and has enticing businesses, a fascinating mansion, the potential for some good friendship stories and a touch of romance. For me, it had just the right amount of suspense.
The only downside of this book is that it made me hungry for baked goods and made me long for some creative teas. I’ll have to make sure that when reading future books, I read them either when I’m not hungry (which would be ideal) or when I have some teas/foods that will satisfy any cravings that I get.
There are a few recipes in the back of the book and I think there were vegan alternatives for each of them, which I appreciated, even though it’s easy for me to veganize almost any recipe.
This was honestly on of the best cozies I have read in a long time. It is not often I catch these series on the first book, so this was a bit of a rarity for me. 😂 It was a very solid beginning to what I assume will be an ongoing series. The writing was solid. The setting perfect. The author did an amazing job of enchanting (😉) the reader with all the descriptions of the town, the teas, the bake goods. I have never wanted to jump into a book more! The plot was engaging and kept me guessing right until the end. The characters were sold and there wasn't too many that it was difficult to keep track. Bonus points for making Phoebe's love interest not a cop. Okay, he is a ex cop and now a private detective, but still, it was a little step out of the usual cozie formula. Last, we get a nice bonus of a few recipes. A couple of which i will be trying very soon! This book was just fantastic and I can't wait to see what the next book brings!
Steep to Death is the first book in a brand new witchy, cozy mystery series and I think I am going to enjoy this series a lot!
I loved everything about this book- the mystery, the setting of Raven Creek, the characters, the tea blends 🍵, the bakery goodies 😋and Phoebe Winchester's magical powers. She is supposed to be a probability witch (a rare kind) and from the sneak peak we get in this book, we can look forward to bigger and better scenarios where Phoebe will get to unleash her powers. Since the TV show Supernatural aired, I have a soft spot for the surname Winchester and it is good to see the name again on a new character. If only the demon hunting men and this witch were related....
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Crooked Lane Books and the author Gretchen Rue for the e-Arc of the book.
Steeped to Death is the first of A Witches Brew Mystery series. It was a fun book to read. Phoebe Winchester is the main character who inherits an old Victorian house called Lane End House in the town of Raven Creek when her aunt Eudora Black died. Phoebe loves and remembers the house from when she would visit when young.. Phoebe also inherited a used book store called The Earl's Study. When she arrives at the house she finds that a cat named Bob. came with the house. The other characters in the story add spice to the story. When getting settled she has a run-in with a woman named Deirdre Miller who wants to buy her house. While checking out the store and apartment she runs into an old friend who is renting the apartment named Rich Lofting a private Eye. On her second day she gets a call from the police that someone has died in the alley behind her store. Funny things start to happen that puts Phoebe on her toes. This is where the story takes off taking the reader on an adventure of finding out who and why the man is murdered, why Deirdre is so interested in her house and what is in it that she is looking for and most important that she is a witch. The story climaxes to an exciting ending.
I look forward to reading the next in this series.
Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this ARC.
“Not everything is supernatural, Phoebe. Usually just the good stuff.”
QUICK SUMMARY Steeped to Death is the kind of cozy mystery that makes me want to go perform a spell or create something with my hands - it has an atmosphere and aesthetic that’s sure to entice fans of magical realism. Although some of the mystery elements felt a little weak and underdeveloped, it's made up for thanks to a charming cast of characters and the overall setting and plot development.
I found the Witches' Brew Mystery series on a website for cozies, and I am so glad I did! This series wasn't on my radar before, but I really hope Gretchen Rue continues to write them because I had so much fun with this one. Steeped to Death is a great start to the series, and introduces us to the small town of Raven Creek, Washington, as well as our MC Phoebe. Her aunt Eudora has died leaving behind a cat named Bob, a house, and a little shop that sells books and her special tea blends. Phoebe quickly learns that there are many things she didn't know about her aunt, and there is something about herself she didn't know that could change her life.
I loved that there is a cat present in the book, though he is definitely less of a prominent figure than the human characters. There is even a hint of romance that progresses the further we get into the story, and I can definitely sense something is going to come from that. 👀 This is also a really fun one to do on audio and the narrator Kristin Price does a wonderful job! To me, she is a perfect fit for Phoebe, and her cat sounds were on point. The magic in the story was really fun as well and not only that, but the story made me laugh out loud multiple times. If you are in the mood for something light and easy to read, I wholeheartedly recommend Steeped to Death.
Usually when I give low ratings to cozies it's because they are stupid. Steeped to Death wasn't stupid. It was a solid cozy in a lot of ways but I found myself very bored. It was slow going even with the audio sped up to 3.2x. The cover art is 5 stars for what it's worth.
Okay friends, I LOVED this book. What a great start to a new series!! Phoebe returns to Raven Creek, after years away, to take over her aunt's store & home. As she gets settled, she finds out there are a few secrets her aunt kept from her. Then a dead guy is found behind the shop. So much to deal with at once but it was so fun to follow Phoebe as she adjusts to her new life. Magic & murder, what more could you ask for. Once I started this book I didn't want to put it down and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Do yourself a favor and add this to your tbr pile!!
4.5 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Don't let the cover and title throw you. This isn't a sweetsie, light and cozy novel all about tea and scones.
Phoebe has recently gone through a divorce and is in big need of a change when her dear aunt passes away, leaving her huge, old Victorian mansion, along with her book and tea shop in suburban Wash. (state), and her orange tabby (Bob) to her.
Aunt Eudora was known as the town witch (think Glenda, not Elphaba). Her tea and book shop were very popular, and you'll soon understand why. But there may be even more to the story as Phoebe learns the truth about her inheritance, both in physical form as well as her attributes. Add in a couple of possible love interests for Phoebe, and I'm here for it.
I was prepared by the book & title for a story lacking depth that I wouldn't like all that much. Nope. This is a good one, and a great beginning to a series that's still being written. The explanation for what a witch is, and what they can and cannot do (both magical witches and Wiccan witches) is the best of any witchy book I've read yet, and makes magical witches very believable!
If you're looking for a cozy escape that is fun and magical, but not sweetsie-cutesie, I highly recommend this series! Two thumbs up, in audio and print!
3.5-4* ... I'm kind of torn on how to rate this one. I definitely enjoyed it, and there are things to commend this above other cozy mysteries, but I don't know that I got exactly 4* worth of fun out of it. In the end, I've rated it 3-stars, but it's a very high 3.
The insta-love thing is just a pet peeve of mine. I'm not sure why it's still used so often when almost everyone hates it. Really, when was the last time you read this trope and thought, "I'm so glad those characters fell in love as soon as they met. I just hate it when the characters wait a whole week or two before they really fall for each other"? Um, NEVER. Occasionally, I do turn a blind eye, but for the most part I just prefer when authors slowly build the relationship for the reader.
With that being said, the book was quite charming. Rich in ambience and tea lore, the author obviously did a lot of research on tea and running a tea shop. The characters were diverse, and the mystery was interesting enough and well-plotted. Overall, an enjoyable read. I'll read the next in the series and see how it goes.
When Phoebe Winchester inherits her Aunt Eudora's Victorian mansion, and The Earl's Study, a bookshop/tea shop combo, her life drastically changes from quiet to being in the middle of a murder investigation, discovering the power of her Aunt's magical teas, gaining the friendship a feline companion named Bob, and learning more about herself than she ever dreamed!
I loved the Phoebe character! As she discovers secrets about her Aunt Eudora and maybe herself, she reacts like anyone would, with skepticism. It was so much fun to go along with her to solve the mystery and learn about her past. The townspeople of Raven Creek are charming and quirky and some know more than they let on about Phoebe's past and present - I' don't want to give anything away but I couldn't put the book down!
When I saw the cover, I knew I wanted to read the book, and it didn't disappoint! I'm hoping for a second book soon!
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Sierra Dean is releasing a brand new novel under a new name. I really liked Secret McQueen and was curious to discover the author in this cozy mystery book.
Phoebe Winchester has inherited her aunt who has just passed away. It’s not easy and she has a store to run now. A store that is not so “normal”, it seems that her aunt made magic teas, that she was a witch. But then, when she discovers the body of a man in the back of the store, she tries to understand what people in town are hiding to find out who killed him.
This was a nice, unpretentious little cozy. I expected a little more originality, but it’s not a big deal. I had a good time.
Steeped To Death follows the typical cozy mystery formula but includes enough twists to feel fresh and offer an enjoyable read.
Phoebe Winchester is moving back to Raven Ridge, Washington to take over the property her aunt Eudora bequeathed to her. She’s got the key to the mansion, a sealed letter from her aunt, and a lot of questions. In the letter, Eudora reassured Phoebe of her love and asked her to be open to exploring the town, the mansion, and the bookshop/tea shop before making any snap decisions about her future.
So here’s a basic cozy mystery trope - a woman out of a significant relationship goes back to a small town where she had been happy as a child. Rue adds a twist to this self-discovery journey that expands the quest Phoebe took to figure out her place in a post-divorce world. Phoebe quickly realizes that most people know more about her and Eudora than they’re willing to share. Everyone has their secrets, and Phoebe pieces everything in stages.
Another common trope is a murder mystery. Phoebe goes to the bookshop/tea shop that had been closed since her aunt’s death. She’s met at the door with the town busybody and an intimidating man who unsuccessfully tries to enter the store with her. Less than 24 hours later, the man’s body was found near the back entrance of the store.
A cozy mystery wouldn’t be complete without the mysterious and handsome stranger. It turns out that Phoebe’s childhood friend has grown up to become Rich, who is keeping secrets of his own.
It makes sense that the residents of a small-town would have heard stories about Eudora’s adored niece. Of course they’re curious about Phoebe’s future plans. But why does everyone appear to know more about Phoebe than she does? Who can she trust? And who - to quote Eudora - deserves a kick in the keister?
Cozy mysteries provide a unique challenge. On the one hand, readers want the usual tropes small town, murder, amateur detective, and a handsome stranger. On the other hand, the book needs to have a unique twist to stand out. Is this book a better choice than just some random cozy grabbed from a bargain bin?
Gretchen Rue succeeds in meeting the challenge in Steeped To Death. The pieces of a cozy mystery are here. The secrets within the mystery - particularly Eudora’s and Phoebe’s - stand out. It’s pretty easy to figure out who are the good guys and who are the evildoers, but the murder isn’t the primary solution of the story. By making Eudora’s secrets the main mystery, Rue deliberately unwraps one secret at a time to provide a delightful gift to the reader.
Thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for providing a copy of this book.
A solid and cute cozy mystery! The heroine's grandmother dies, so she takes over the tea shop and slowly learns that the tea there might be a big magical. A man is found dead behind the tea shop, and she decides to try and found out who committed the murder. While also falling for the man she knew when she was young who is renting out her grandmother's apartment. The heroine starts digging around town and using magic tea to try and found out who committed the murder. I had a fun time!
Steeped to Death was…not for me. I’m especially surprised by the unanimous strong reviews. This was like one of those movies with a lot of stars that you usually like but the movie ends up being a disappointment. The description of this book got me excited. I love bookstores and old houses in books and magic and mystery and romance and tea and a cool cat. Anything interesting that occurred in the book was a blip—like the magic, murder mystery, or romance—compared to the word count devoted to the mundane details of running a business and meeting people around town. (I really didn’t need the step-by-step details about making homemade sourdough for avocado toast and managing baked goods for the store when we’re 60% into the plot and I’m hoping *something* significant will happen). It was also confusing to me that Phoebe had spent a significant chunk of her childhood in this town and visited her aunt a lot, but everything about the town and her aunt’s place in it was new to her. And with the cat on the cover, I thought maybe the cat would have more to him than just being a typical cat. This book was so tepid that it could have been one of those sleep stories.
A very enjoyable and appealing read for the season. I loved the cat, Bob, the other characters, and the descriptions of tea-making and bookselling. I intend to read every book in this fabulous cozy series!
I've found a new favorite series that I can't wait to get deeper into! This is the first book and does a masterful job of introducing us to the main character, Phoebe, and her cast of new friends and shop mates! A great small-town setting that starts with a fabulous old Victorian home and her new bookstore/tea shop! Toss in a bit of magical and paranormal activity that is slowly evolving into the story and you have a murder mystery to really dig your teeth into! The author does such an excellent job of setting the scene so that you feel like you are there without weighing you down in minute details. I absolutely cannot wait to see how things play out in future books!

Phoebe Winchester has come to Raven Creek, Washington following the death of her dear Aunt Endora. Endora was a woman who loved life and was always up for adventure. She was also well known for making "magical tea". Endora has left her mansion, tea/book shop, and Bob, her huge orange cat to Phoebe. Her shop, The Earl's Study was her pride and joy. Phoebe just hopes to be able to keep the place going for a long time as her aunt has wished. Finding a dead body in the alley was not part of her business plan.
Phoebe is also dealing with the town's busybody, Dierdre Miller, who is trying to get her to sell both the shop and her home so she can leave Raven Creek and get on with her life. Phoebe has no desire to sell or leave. In fact, she thinks the pressure the woman is putting on her to sell is pretty fishy especially when Phoebe believes she is involved with the man that was murdered.
When Phoebe mixes up, bakes, and serves her first batch of scones using her aunt's precious ingredients she is surprised by what happens after Dierdre takes her first bite. There had been rumors that Endora may have been an actual witch so maybe her ingredients are still filled with magic. Or maybe, she may not have been the only one in the family with a special gift.
The information she gets from Dierdre makes Phoebe start her own investigation to find out who the deceased was?, and why he was at The Earl's Study. Who killed him? And why? She also wants to see if she really does have magical powers and if those powers can help her sweep the killer straight into jail.
____
What a fun start for this series. Endora, a perfect name for a witch right, Agnes Morehead popped into my mind immediately. Thankfully the Endora in the story was a kind and giving witch and not conniving and up to mischief witch like the television Endora. Story Endora loved her niece so much and cared so much about all the people in her life. She also was welcoming to people needing a second chance. She did have her secrets though but true to form she made arrangements for those secrets to be revealed to Phoebe at the proper time. The murder hastened her timetable.
Phoebe loved her aunt and spent many summers with her when she was growing up and made some friends in Raven Creek. She was heartbroken that it had been some time since she had seen her aunt or the friends she had made. It was funny that it took a little prodding for her to recognize those friends though and she didn't know if she could still trust them like she had all those years ago. I really enjoyed all the interactions she had with everyone as she tried to find her place in the town while trying to find out if one of them was the killer. She was easy to connect with and someone whose life I was happy to escape into.
The mystery was very well-plotted especially for the first book in the series when the author has to introduce all the characters and she did that well too. Ms. Rue sets a brisk pace with twists, turns, and secrets revealed. The author took time to set each scene making it easy to envision them in my mind's eye. I had a couple of people in my sights as the guilty party but the reveal completely caught me off guard and let me tell you the pages were flying as a true showdown played out.
Steeped to Death is a lighthearted paranormal mystery filled with engaging characters that I can't wait to revisit. I loved the cozy bookstore/tea shop setting as well as the mansion. Phoebe's whole inheritance was quite interesting. Ms. Rue blends in plenty of humor with her mystery and daily life in Raven Creek. I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end.
I loved this book. I'd be lying if I told you upfront that I would love it because, well, I always tend to be a bit skeptical of new to me authors that offer us magical mysteries, so to speak. I'm glad I was wrong and, quite frankly, have added author Gretchen Rue and the Witches' Brew Mystery series to my "must read" list.
Phoebe is in town to claim an inheritance from her late aunt. She's inherited both an old Victorian house, Lane End House, and her aunt's shop. And, oh, a cat named Bob. Turns out she's inherited more than that from her aunt, actually, not even counting the renter in the shop apartment. In the process of discovering how her world has changed, she copes with Dierdre who is not just pushy and obnoxious about demanding Phoebe sell her the house and shop but seems unable to take no for an answer. Then, a dead body is discovered at the shop's back door.
Who killed the man, whose name isn't even known to Phoebe initially? Why? Was he trying to rob the shop? Was he working with Dierdre? Why does Rich, who turns out to be an old friend from her childhood, keep turning up in unexpected places? How can Phoebe be both wary of and attracted to him at the same time? Why is he there? Why is the shoe store guy so hostile? Is there really a recipe that will make someone tell the truth? After a frightening nightmare, why does Phoebe go out for a run the next morning? What does she discover during lunch with Rich? Will Honey be helpful or just sell her a crystal? How many letters did her aunt write to Phoebe? Why.... oh, never mind. You'll have to read the book for the answers to these and many, many other questions. I went from skeptical and unsure about this book to loving it and you might find yourself doing the same. It’s about the people and their relationships with the magic simply another trait. And, did I mention there are recipes at the end. No, not magical ones, sorry.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #CrookedLaneBooks for allowing me to get to know Phoebe and her new friends. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this intriguing small town and its residents.
Phoebe, recently divorced and grieving the passing of her aunt, moves into her aunt's home. While trying to settle into her new life, home, and a tea shop owner, she keeps getting hassled by a local real estate agent wanting to buy her aunt's house. As if things couldn't be more overwhelming for her, it seems someone has it in for Phoebe when a dead body is discovered outside her shop.
Phoebe is an interesting new character; she is resilient, strong, and flawed. She is learning she may possess some magical powers. The mystery is entertaining, well-plotted, and full of twists and turns.
