Another reminder that DC's history includes non-superhero titles.
Not a lot to say about these, really. They're decent quality stories, but not spectacular. Sheldon Mayer's signature is usually an indicator of at least slightly higher quality. He seems to have a better grasp of comic timing and character movement than the rest of the pack. The first page of the Doodles Duck story, "I Get A Kick," is a great example of this.
In general, the DC digests are a great way to sample the company's rich history. I'm honestly not sure how difficult they are to find–I bought mine new back in the day–but they're definitely worth keeping an eye out for.
Another collection of anthropomorphic funny animals from the archives of DC Comics. This volume is totally funny animals, with none of other DC's humour products represented. However it would seem that, as usual the material here dates from the fifties and sixties. I have always wondered why DC didn't reprint any of its forties material in the digests, especially since the Leading Comics issues from that decade had a different line-up from the later issues. I realize now that this may have been when DC was still having to be careful in reprinting forties material due to the method used for that purpose. I am thinking that they preferred to reserve that for the superhero books. Even without the forties material there was still a wealth of stories that could be reprinted. And this is decent collection. The material is amusing and sure to produce some chuckles. Granted the characters aren't as well known as some, Disney and Warner Brothers come to mind, but that doesn't mean the material can't be good, and it is. I enjoyed this issue. I admit I didn't pay much attention to this type of thing when I was first reading comics for the most part, but I guess as I got older my comic reading palate got bigger. If you enjoy humourous comics you should enjoy this one. Happy reading.
