Packing Serious Magical Mojo

Paranormal Women's Fiction

What happens when six middle-aged sisters with a party planning business buy a cursed plantation? Add one ghoul, the Queen of Voodoo, and a dash of unlocked dormant magic and find out!

When Dani convinces her five sisters to sink everything they have into purchasing a dilapidated old plantation, it seems like a great idea at the time. They need a site to expand their business, and none of them is a stranger to the occasional escapade. Little do they know buying Willowberry Plantation House will be the biggest adventure of their lives.

As New Orleans natives, the sisters aren't at all surprised to find a ghost haunting their new house. What they don't see coming is their discovery that the land was cursed by a wrathful witch centuries earlier. Then things get really strange when Phoebe pays them a visit, unlocking more than just the magic trapped in the earth as she removes the hex that plagued the plantation.

Can their business thrive with a ghoul on the grounds, an angry Voodoo Queen to appease, and a leaky roof to fix? As the sisters scramble to pull off their very first shifter mating ceremony, two things are certain: they won't make it without each other, and they've stumbled upon some incredible new powers they don't yet understand.

This is a spin off from Brenda Trim's Mystical Midlife in Maine Series which I enjoyed. This first book in the new series was equally enjoyable. Looking forward to the next book.

Borrowed this from Prime Reading, but didn't make it beyond chapter three.

Interesting premise, but the book needs a few more rounds of serious editing. First person POV does not work with multiple perspectives, especially when the author can't keep track of who is speaking. My confusion was exacerbated by the constant mix-up of spouse names and whose favorite thing was which.

Additionally, I was put off by the six sisters' constant incontinence (not every middle-aged mother has that issue) brought on by random laughter. Seriously, there was so much random giggling, they came across as escapees from a padded room.

When 6 middle -aged sisters buy a house that is “ haunted by a ghost” there are a series of unexpected events.

This paranormal story is cosy and enjoyable, the narrator’s voice also fits with this story. A good combination for an interesting audio. :)

The sisters are an intriguing combination of different characters, brought together. I listened to several interactions with a smile on my face, very recognizable.

It was very relaxing and makes me want to listen to more audiobooks from Brenda Trim. ☺️.

This is book one of the Twisted Sisters Midlife Maelstrom and the main characters are the six Smith sisters, Dani (Danielle), Lia (Dahlia), Kota (Dakota), Dre (Dreya), Phi (Delphine) and Dea (Deandra). They also have four brothers, but they haven’t joined the women in their business venture. The ladies formed a business STS (Six Twisted Sisters) doing all sorts of party planning, from weddings, baby showers, to any sort of celebration you could imagine. They laser engrave bottles, glasses and more for the personal touch at the events, as well as make signs specifically for the celebration. The personal touch and making it right for the person who it is for, is key to their success. Each sister has a different strength and uses that to make the business successful. One is great for making lists of what needs to be done and getting people arranged to do it, another does flowers, a few are doers and put their hands to anything, whilst another specialises in the laser engraving and a couple more are great at decorating and setting the scene for a room, knowing exactly what it should look like and picture it in their heads, before a room is even emptied.
Together they have bought the Willowberry Plantation House in New Orleans, getting it for a good price considering the size of it, but that is down to its poor condition, damp and a multitude of other hidden sins! Two of the sisters, Dani and Lia are going to be living there, as one lost her husband a year ago and the other’s cheated on them and is close to a divorce for the second time, and have sold their homes, left their jobs, so they can get stuck into the work needed to get the house up and running. The other four sisters have all put in every penny they could, to afford the place, which also has a barn for their engraving business and a separate servant’s quarter and an outside kitchen area. There are lots of rooms in the main house which was built by William Henry Carlton for is wife Mary Alice. There is even an attic space, which the sisters may eventually have their rooms in. For now, they are busy cleaning, taking off old wallpaper, painting walls and finding out what else needs fixing. Dani sees what she assumes is a ghost, but doesn’t tell her other sisters in case they freak out! There is a large number of beehives on the property and when they swarm around the sisters, they can smell lavender, although none grows in the area, according to their gardener Fred! He says they have awoken the magic of the plantation!
A night of rain sees them running around with buckets and then calling a company for repairs. Two men turn up the next day, Noah and Lucas, who are both handsome and well built, leaving both Dani and Lia drooling. They agree to fix the roof and reduce the price if they will hold a wedding ceremony for Lucas’ daughter. But in fact it would be a mating ceremony as they are both wolf shifters! Shortly after they get started on the roof, the sisters receive some visitors, Phoebe, her boyfriend and a couple of others, who want a tour of the plantation. The sisters hadn’t amended the sign for the place off the main road, even when they amended their website, to say tours were on hold. Only these visitors are not quite what they seem and are at the plantation looking for a necromancer, as Phoebe wants to help Selene regain her soul, as she is a ghoul! When Phoebe tries to prove to them that magic is real, she inadvertently raises a ghoul, Camilla, the illegitimate daughter of Mary Alice, who was raised by her father a slave, at William’s orders. Phoebe, the newish Pleiades for the region, manages to fix her appearance, so she isn’t quite so zombie like, but she needs to find a necromancer to join her soul to her body, before she can be possessed by a demon. She has her own ghoul to fix up as well, which was why she was visiting the plantation. The sisters were brought up in New Orleans, so are used to tales of the supernatural, but only really believed in ghosts, not everything else they got exposed to that day!
Mary Alice’s ghost appears to them and asks them to remove the curse upon her and the plantation, not that any of the sisters know any magic. It seems Phoebe’s actions make have awoken locked magical abilities in them all, from a distant ancestor and they will all have to learn how to use it and fast. The sisters gain new magical powers, but slowly and one at a time, with no rhyme or reason. The first is able to wish for anything she wants and it comes into being, another touches items and has visions from them, another is triggered by strong smells and gains visions of the future, while another is able to move things with her mind. Still more sisters to gain their powers, but their immediate concern is Camilla and her soul, as well as the mating ceremony and a danger they have sensed watching them. Phoebe calls in Marie Laveau and a necromancer to help with Selene and also Camilla, and one of the sisters senses that Marie is not there to do exactly as they wish, but has her own plans for the ghouls! They don’t want to make an enemy of such a powerful being, but they also don’t want to be beholding to her either, nor allow her access to the plantation at will. They are taught a few simple protection spells to help protect their home and land, as well as themselves, but have so much more to learn. Touches of romance are in the air for Dani and Lia with their wolf shifters Noah and Lucas, who are always willing to drop everything and come to their aid, no matter how small or large a problem or issue they face. The sisters will face this new hurdle and all the unexpected changes it brings to their lives, in exactly the same way they approach everything, together! I can’t wait to see what other powers they get in the next book and if they can finally remove the curse tying Mary Alice and all the other ghosts to the plantation, as well as more romance and excitement. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

It's a good read. Some parts of the book feel like a bunch of words and lots of information but not a well woven story that grips you.

Packing Serious Magical Mojo is the first book in Trim's Twisted Sisters Midlife Maelstrom series. This first book introduces us to the six Smith sisters who have a party planning business. They decided to pool their assets and buy Willowberry Plantation House, a run-down plantation, with the goal of renovating it and using it as a venue for their events. What they didn't know is that the site is both cursed and haunted, and that magic is real.

This paranormal, urban fantasy centers around two of the six sisters - Dahlia and Danielle. Both sold their homes to be able to buy-in and have to move into the house where they have some interesting encounters. In addition to learning about Dahlia and Danielle's backgrounds, readers are treated to some love potential in the strong, capable and highly attractive roofers - Lucas and Noah. While the sisters cannot really afford their services, they can't not repair the roof so they come to an agreement through a little bartering. The cost of the roof will be significantly decreased and in exchange, the Twisted Sisters will host their first event at the plantation - Lucas' daughter's wedding.

While exploring the property, the sisters learn that one William Henry Carlton built the house for his wife Mary-Alice. Unfortunately Mary Alice did not have the happiest of stories and she is now bound to the property unless the sisters can help break set her free. Dahlia and Danielle want to help, but have no idea how; they have no knowledge of witchcraft or spells.

When a carload of folks stop by the plantation offering a generous sum of money for a tour, the sisters cannot refuse but they get much more than they expected. During the tour Phoebe tells the sisters that they are searching for a necromancer in the hopes of helping Selene get her soul back. The sisters ask these weird folks to leave and take their crazy with them. In an attempt to prove to the sisters that magic is real, Phoebe raises a ghoul - Camille. She happens to be Mary-Alice's illegitimate daughter. Oh the stories she must have! Phoebe also inadvertently awakens the magic on the land and the six sisters come to learn that they have magical abilities which they will need to quickly learn to master.

There's a lot going on in this book, and while it was somewhat challenging to keep all the sisters straight, ultimately it was a fun read. I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Naomi Rose-Mock. Her voice is quite pleasant and I thought she did a good job recounting the story. That said, I kind of wish there would have been two narrators - one for each of the sisters featured in this installment.

Trim has definitely captured my interest. I love how close these sisters are, and their supportive relationship. They are best friends who always take the time to laugh together and have fun. I'm keen to explore more of this series and discover the other sisters, as well as the four Smith brothers too!

Good

Meet the Twisted Sisters, Dreya, Dakota, Dahlia, Danielle, Delphine, and Deandra. They’ve recently bought a haunted and cursed plantation home (not that they know it’s cursed), and that’s where they run into Phoebe Duedonne (you can read Phoebe’s side of that story in Saggy but Witty in Crescent City).
The encounter with Phoebe leaves them as empowered witches, with new abilities and a ghoul to take care of… and this book is really about the sisters introduction to magical life.
Primarily, this is told from the perspective of Dahlia (a forty-five year old widow), and Danielle (a forty-two year old twice divorcée). The other sisters are married, and they all six have children, most of them are grown (Dreya even has grandkids). There are also four brothers, none of whom are in the story or even named, and although the children are mentioned, only one gets named, so there are plenty of family members and lots more about them to learn.
The story involves the sisters’ introduction to the magical world, and how they begin to deal with the abilities they start to manifest, as well as their interactions with Phoebe, shifters, and some of the more fiendish beings around that part of the world.
It’s an entertaining read, with lots of new characters to keep track of (I recommend a notebook!), and an enjoyable large family dynamic. There’s plenty of action, adventure, and magic, and it’s a fun book for fans of paranormal women’s fiction, and the author’s connected series.

If you read Saggy But Witty in Crescent City you met the Six Twisted Sisters when Phoebe and company went to New Orleans to find a way to get Selene's soul back into her body. Some of those events are retold in this book, but from the other side. Danielle, Dahlia, and the four other D sisters of the family, have purchased a rundown plantation near New Orleans to use for weddings and such as part of their party planning business. Dani and Lia are the two sisters who are currently unmarried and with no children left at home so they have sold their houses and plan to live at the house during and after renovations.

I don't want to ruin the story for you so I will just say a few things about the plot. Phoebe causes the sisters to become witchy women who each start to exhibit a special power. Since the majority of the sisters didn't even believe in magic before, they are totally thrown by these events. They now have their own ghoul to protect and it seems the two guys who showed up to replace their roof have some magic of their own. Shifters really exist? Whoa. From ghosts to necromancer to Marie Laveau, this book has it all. Can't wait to read the rest of the series. Do you think we will get as many of these as we have DWA? We can only hope...

I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

Six Twisted Sisters is a fun mid-life introduction to magic and the paranormal world! The story is told from the perspective of two of the sisters. They are a huge family and very involved in each others lives, also very hard working! They are close, their for each other, and always always supportive of each other! The sisters are normal one day and after meeting Phoebe, not so normal. Seems Phoebe lifted a curs on the plantation they bought and it brought to life the magic within them.
Danielle and Dahlia have had some tough breaks in life, however it's nothing anyone blames on them. Lots of intense moments and 2 slow burn romance fuses are lit. Luke and Noah are wolf shifters and they are lighting up Dani and Lia' lives! The sisters get a crash course in the paranormal world.
The sisters are a very close knit bunch and that helps them stay grounded! Their party planning business is off and running and they are on the road to success! Looking forward to this spin off from Midlife Magic!!

An amazing treat

We met the Twisted Sisters in Phoebe's adventures in "Saggy But Witty in Crescent City" and this book ties in beautifully with the adventure there.
The Twisted Sisters are 6 sisters who run a party planning business. They have purchased an old Plantation that requires some work, ok a lot of work, but the girls are sure they can do it and run it as a party.

There is a lot to find out about Willowberry Plantation House. What they didn't expect was a long ago curse, meaning no business can flourish on the plantation, given the sisters have all put everything they have on the line for the business, this could spell disaster! But add in Phoebe, some dormant magic in the girls blood, and boom mayhem begins, And I do mean mayhem, from a real life ghoul, to the ghosts of owners long past,

This is a really great entry into this series and I look forward to finding out what is going to happen, how their magic will flourish and of course the shifters don't hurt.

I don't imagine it is the last we have heard from Marie Laveau either!

Another winner from one of my new favorite authors

I just finished Book 1 of the Twisted Sisters Midlife Maelstrom series. These sisters are laugh out loud funny and you instantly feel the love and connection between them and their family. The story plot moved along quickly, defining a great standalone read and also setting up the characters and future enjoyable story plots. I love everything about their back story, it's like the author found out every possible thing that I love and revved up the adventure; a close knit group of sisters navigating perimenapuse and a lucrative event planning business together, a hint of romance, an old plantation outside of NOLA, paranormal discovery with voodoo and witches and ghouls. I can't wait to jump back into Book 2 to see what they get into next.

3/5 ⭐️ DNF’D 10 pages from the end.

Ok, this started out pretty good. Sisters renovating an old plantation and the banter and funny parts did elicit a chuckle from me. I could somewhat relate as their age and business is about the same as me.

However, the pace at which this proceeded was breakneck. Not to mention the fact that it jumped around so much I had to go back several times and reread and even then I’m like “wtf happened, it literally jumped so far”. It was a bit hard to follow too, a lot of people to keep track of and then so much was happening at once, it was a bit jumbled.

Towards the end it got SUPER confusing and I finally said eff it and DNF’D it.

Overall the idea and storyline could be really good if the author would’ve taken more time to write more about it instead of what felt like a general skimming over the top.

I loved the premise of this story, and was intrigued to dive in. Having someone read a tale of magical sisters and the challenges of a potentially haunted house? Sign me up!

And it was fun, but also frustrating in places. As I had the audiobook I was beholden to the narrator, and honestly found it difficult to differentiate between the characters. It doesn't help that every one has a similar name, but I was left wondering if I'd have the same issue if I'd read a physical book.

The story was fun and the humour hit well, but I had to keep pausing to figure out just who was doing what. Overall, I was left with a sense of frustration, which I put down to the format. I'll see about picking up a copy of the paperback or ebook to revisit, as this is a world that I'd like to see more of.

Six sisters buy an old New Orleans plantation house and it comes complete with a hex and a ghost. Something awakens their dormant magic and suddenly they have powers they do not know how to use, but they have a lot of fun trying to learn. Prepare to laugh at their antics and magic learning, intriguing situations as they work to get the hex lifted and much more. The characters are quirky and have a great variety of personalities, both alive and dead. The sisters and their party planning business just might get off the ground but maybe involved more with the paranormal side of things. Shifter weddings coming up and more. Great ending and can not wait for the next book. This group is terrific.

First meet

This is a spin off series from phobes series, when phobe goes to new Orleans to get Serenas soul she meets the sisters in her series we get it from phobes POV. This book gives it from Dani and lias POV ( the only two that's single I think) plus we see them learning about magic as they settle in.
You don't need to read the other first just a spoiler that Serena gets her soul back this series runs along side phobes and there is phone calls to both in both series so a few cross overs as set in same time same world. There is Fionas series as well that is just before phobes.

My problem with this is the mix up of POV on danis pov we get comments about Dani so clearly it was lia it happened a few times

Twisted Sisters Midlife Maelstrom Book 1 begins with the six Smith sisters purchasing the Willowberry Plantation to use as a venue for their party planning business. The six sisters and the spouses of the married, work hard to renovate the barn, house, kitchen, and slave quarters. The house and barn are finished and part of the kitchen when they have a mating ceremony for Lilly, the only child of Lucas, alpha of the wolf-shifter pack, This story is packed with action, had me laughing out loud in places, and includes some romance. Very highly recommended.

Who knew midlife could be so exciting.

When the Smith sisters bought the old plantation they had no idea how much their lives would change. I loved this book and these characters. They are all such fun, and their witty interactions are pretty realistic. They can also be funny, and at times a little snarky, and that is just the sisters. All of the characters are well written, and utterly fascinating, so I was engrossed in their story from the first page to the last. Needless to say I loved this book. Magic, shifters, witches, voodoo queens, and a unique plot with plenty of twists make this a must read in my opinion.

Oh wow, another smash hit!

I am beginning to think that there is no story that Trim cannot write. Each of her magical midlife genre series crossover, and each series.is uniquely its own.

I thought that Phoebe's mansion in Maine would be my favorite American setting, but it has been trumped by the Six Twisted Sisters' plantation! Being from the South myself, I easily picture each room, the flora, the smells, and the Old World charm. As the reader, it is simply n amazing how you slip into Trim's stories before you even realize it.

Brava on another smash series, and I can't wait to immerse myself in book 2.

A cursed plantation, ghosts, witches, werewolf shifters, necromancer & demon hound!

This author has a vivid imagination and is a great storyteller. The book is a page turner and you will want to allow time to read it in one sitting or you'll end up like me typing this at 2am. I don't want to say much and leak any spoilers. Six sisters buy this plantation in New Orleans and plan to use it for their event planning business. While the mansion has the potential to be gorgeous, it is falling apart needs a great deal of work. Join the ladies as they navigate their new lives. I gave it 5 ++ stars!

Good start

Good start to new series that was introduced in the Mystical Midlife in Maine series. Six sisters buy a rundown mansion near New Orleans to use as a venue for their party planning business. They discover that they have magical powers and are beginning to navigate that along with everything else. Six sisters whose names all start with the letter D is a little confusing but should resolve when their characters become more developed. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.

I enjoyed this story, which was a spin off from the Magical Midlife in Maine series. Six sisters run a party planning business called The Twisted Sisters. They have just purchased a run down plantation which they plan to use as a base for their business and home for some of them. This story is told from the point of view of Danielle and Dahlia. As humans, they are now coming into contact with ghosts, ghouls, wolf shifters and their own emerging magical powers. Fun start to a new series. I’ll be looking out for the next one.

A crossover or spinoff with the Pleiades midlife series, the Six Twisted Sisters are party planners, remodeling a plantation as a venue, and very new to the paranormal world.

Things are proving to be a bunch of surprises for them, and very much more intriguing as a venture with the addition of a god, a Pleiades, a big wig vodoo - or several, a ghoul, and a miscellany of other exciting paranormal entities

filled with magic, doubt, sister stuff, humor and midlife romance and challenges

Six sisters buy a rundown plantation outside of New Orleans to use as a venue for their party planning business. After a crazy encounter with some strangers it is seems they now have magical powers. Follow the Six Twisted Sisters as they restore the plantation, hold their first event (did someone say werewolves) and come to terms with their new found powers! Oh and put the soul back in a ghoul! Fun read, looking forward to more!

I really liked the premise of the book and the idea of the sisters being in it together. I gave it 4 stars for two reasons. 1). I honestly couldn’t tell the girls apart. I know the background of a few but I was getting confused with the names as well as each chapter switched between two of the sisters. 2) similar to the girls there was things added to the plot that was over the top and didn’t seem to add to the storyline. I don’t want to say more specific so there is no spoilers.
Overall, I enjoyed it just not entirely sure I’ll read the next book in the serie.

The Six Twisted Sisters decide to expand their special events business by buying an old plantation house to use as an event space. Danielle and Dahlia will be living there and the other four sisters, Dakota, Dreya, Deandra and Delphine will come and help with the renovations. They have a plan of when they want to open up to the public, but when the roof begins leaking their plans might change. They hire some roofers and they aren't what they seem and then some strangers show up and with a simple spell the magic of the land is released and things will never be the same.

This is an interesting first book in a nice sized series. The writing is a bit haphazard, switching the point of view back and forth between some of the six sisters. This makes it confusing and hard to keep up with who is "talking". The paranormal hits just keep coming and there is virtually zero down time for the women to just work on the renovations uninterrupted. The several mentions of their shared incontinence after laughing, etc. is a bit disturbing. Otherwise it is a fast paced story with quite a bit of action without much explication.

nicknames

This a good story with interesting magical elements and romance I would have rated 5 but one thing aggravated me the whole book: the sister’s names and nicknames. It’s already hard to keep up with six sister’s names, but the writer constantly switches from their full names to their nicknames. Writer would use their full name and then also use their nickname, often in the same paragraph or even the same sentence. I stayed confused the whole book trying to place all the names. Writer needs to edit to just using their full name.
…I needed to vent. Thank you

Packing Serious Magical Mojo Book 1 of Twisted Sisters Midlife Maelstrom by Brenda Trim an exciting start to a new series. I love these twisted sisters, the exciting situations they get in to and the non-stop magical action throughout the book! Naomi Rose-Mock does a great job voicing the different characters. I'm looking forward to getting to know the girls better and see what else they get up to. Recommend!
