This book's got a bad rap from Goodreads. While Simpkins gets quite a few facts wrong, and while sometimes the book reads like THE COLTRANE READER (lots of long--but apt--quotes from other works), he does a GREAT job getting at emotional and artistic truths more diligent, tidy scholars miss. Personally, it's my favorite of the three I've now read. Simpkins also does a way better job mining Coltrane's personal life for key moments and influences.

not without a few typos and editing shortcomings, but really important as a document written not long after John Coltrane's passing. he's an artist who's already passed into myth and legend, and i had this idea of him as a somewhat cold, humorless person. this was not from one account - i went to music school, got a jazz degree, and worked at a jazz radio station for over a decade. the stories and anecdotes here are from people not far removed from him, and emphasize that he was a warm, down-to-earth person (even if he possessed discipline that few people do).

Ormond's bio reads more like a novel than a scholarly work. There aren't a lot of facts, it's more a character study of as man searching for the spiritual through music.
