This is absolutely one of the sweetest, most heartstring-tugging, loveliest things I've read in such a long time — and one of the best depictions of the found family trope I've ever seen. The characters are so diverse and lovable, the storyline will break your heart and mend it all over again, and the art is stunning. The color palettes are vivid, the designs are detailed, and Maggie is so cute it hurts. I feel like I'm just rambling and gushing right now because this is one of those books that I loved so much, I don't know how to fit it into a coherent review. I just want to shove Another Kind into every kid's hands, and every adult's, too (especially if you love cryptids as much as I do). ♥

Representation: two nonbinary characters (including one character questioning and then coming out as nonbinary); most characters are BIPOC

A cryptid version of Marvel's Runaways. A yeti, will of the wisp, selkie, reptilian, werebear, and eldrich offspring escape from a government facility for irregularities. They don't know who to trust and go on the run in search for a home of their own. Everything about this was great. Cait May's art was great. The all-ages story was engaging and inclusive. I hope we get to see another book featuring these characters.

TW: antisemitism

I'm honestly kind of at a loss for how to review this book. It was great and also extremely irresponsible?

I really loved the story and the cast of characters. It hits that beloved found family trope HARD and also has a million cute cryptid jokes and charming character moments. There's a lot of discussion about being non-binary in a way that, while a little clunky, seems well suited for a book aimed at children. The journey is satisfying and the whole thing felt serious without being discouraging and trauma-informed while still feeling like a good story instead of an after-school special. The villain was powerful, though not all-knowing. The stakes were high, but without the world ending and chosen one tropes that I tend to really hate. They even had a non-speaking character who wasn't magically cured! It was sweet and charming and age-appropriate, which is great since I purchased it with the hope of gifting it to my young cousin.

But here's my problem. One of the "cryptid" children is a reptilian. Not just a lizard kid or a scaly alien. A genuine David Icke Reptilian whose family/entire race is on a mission to disguise themselves as human and take over the world governments. They shift faces and have nefarious governmental plots and cover-ups and are part of a global cabal. The kid in question becomes estranged from his family because he genuinely likes humans and doesn't want to help further the evil mission.

But NOWHERE in this book does it even mention Judaism. The reptilian and lizard people conspiracies are deeply rooted in anti-Semitism and the persecution of Jewish people. It's inseparable. But somehow the creators of this book decided to treat the Reptilian conspiracy exactly the same as they treat aliens and selkies and Cthulu. Like it's just another fun monster character and they completely ignore the horrific racial violence that is intimately associated with the Reptilian conspiracy. I was so confused by this treatment. Did the authors genuinely not know? Lizard people are VERY different than the Loch Ness Monster. You can't just throw one into a story like this? Into a CHILDREN'S book??? I'm so confused by this level of casual flippancy with a downright racist trope.

By including a reptilian child in a book where cryptids and monsters are real, they're recklessly playing with a racist conspiracy that is rooted and steeped in antisemitism and they don't seem to even realize it? I'm honestly astonished.

And it's hard because I loved the little lizard kid. They went through an interesting gender journey and the larger story of the book was so compassionate. But it was super weird to see a story deal with gender so tenderly without taking even the most cursory care on race? Or maybe it's not so weird because it seems like the largely literary world is willing to be progressive and sensitive on matters of sexuality and gender, but I still find myself stumbling into racist tropes and white ignorance with every other book I read.

I don't know if I should give this book to my little cousin. How am I going to explain to him that unlike the yeti and the fairy girl and the selkie, the reptilian child refers back to a violent and hate-filled conspiracy aimed at real people?

I'm so disappointed that an otherwise wonderful book included something so hateful so casually. And that not one editor or agent noticed. This is common knowledge. It's an egregious oversight.

Thank you so much to Claire Draper for sending me a copy of this wonderful book!

TW:

This book was pitched to me as cryptid kids, found family, and a diverse cast, and it gave EXACTLY what it needed to give! This charming and adventurous novel made me so emotional SO many times and I just fell absolutely in love with the story and the characters. There was incredible nonbinary representation and that certainly dragged a few tears out of me. Highly recommend for my fellow fans of found family tropes and cryptids/monsters.

Separately, I would like to point out a choice that was made in this book that I'm not going to take any points off for but I do think is VERY important to mention:
One of the kids is a "lizard-person" AKA the kind of lizard people that some conspiracy theorists believe control politics and the economy and the media and things like that. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't know this but those specific conspiracies mirror Nazi rhetoric and can actually be traced back to reveal that they were started by a lot of known anti-semites in order to spread anti-semitic propaganda. It's something that mostly only Jewish people tend to know about - in general there needs to be a lot more education on what anti-semitism looks like - but it is something that rubbed me the wrong way while reading this. Even though I'm 100% sure this book wasn't trying to push Nazi propaganda, it was still present in this novel and as a Jewish person, I feel like I need to bring this up so others can become aware of this potentially damaging factor.

Another Kind is a one of a kind graphic novel! It completely sucked me into this little cryptid found family. I was so invested in their journey, completely on the edge of my seat the entire time. I loved the story telling of it, the cross country journey, the meeting of other irregulars, the way it was able to individually dive into each of the kid's backstories while not detracting from the overarching story. Actually, in a way that added to the overarching story! I also just adored the non-binary rep in the story! It's so so important to have that kind of representation available to kids and it made my heart soar to see it. Everything about this book captured my heart. So much love!

Such a fun graphic novel. The artwork is incredible. The stories in each of the issues are filled with important topics ranging from gender to self-love and much more. I had a smile on my face through 80% of it and the rest were just touching or courageous moments. Maggie will always and forever be a favorite. Highly recommend.

I loved this book a lot and wanted to give it five stars but it is unfortunate about the reptilian kid because I don't think it was intentional but it is a problem when you use the reptilian aliens disguised as humans taking over the government thing in your story.

This was adorable! I loved the mix of aliens and cryptozoology and myths. The journey of these six "irregulars" (i.e. monster children) searching for a home is both moving and fun. A great graphic novel for kids who like a little bit fantasy and monsters in their graphic novels. Thanks to Netgalley for the Advanced Earc!

I assumed this was just gonna be another X-Men rip, but once you accept the premise it's actually a very sweet and interesting story that reminded me a lot of the Life is Strange series and other found family/road trip-style stories, which I like a lot. I also thought the villain reveal was interesting and well-choreographed.

Here’s the thing I enjoyed this book but unfortunately it has a plot line that is Anti-Semitic. It does great talking about pronouns and other important subjects. However, the conspiracy theory regarding reptilians in government has roots in Anti-Semitism so I can’t give it anything above a two star.

It’s hard because I enjoyed the book; I liked the art, the characters, and the found family themes.

A librarian friend of mine and fellow comics fans, Matt Lowder, wrote such a glowing review of this awhile back that I had to check this out for myself and reserved a copy from the local library. His review was posted to my blog on July 14 . . . . . .

I’m always looking for books to recommend or purchase for my 7-year old grandson. A voracious reader who’s several levels beyond second grade for reading comprehension- - I thought this might appeal to him. However, he may not be ready for the violence that’s contained in the story so I’m holding off for a few years.

As for me, this was a real winner - - and I agree 100% with everything that Matt said. I was reminded of the best stories from Marvel's X-Men, New Mutants and DP7. It whetted my appetite to try some more YA OGNs. FIVE STARS.

This was fantastic! I highly recommend it!

I loved the characters in this book. Everyone had a backstory that was explored in some way, so the reader has the opportunity to get to know all of them well. I really love this trope of kids traveling together on a dangerous journey, learning not just about how everything works in the world around them, but also about themselves in the process. I loved how they meet people on the way, and in turn the reader gets even more lore out of the story.

I was thinking that the woman in the collector's tank was going to be significant to Maggie, so I was a little disappointed we didn't see her again, but that's only a small thing. Overall, it was excellent. If you like Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Dragon Prince, or Stranger Things, you should definitely pick this one up.

Love, love, looooved this! First, I have been following Cait May on Twitter for years for her Critical Role art and she is so incredibly talented. I was super excited when I realized she was involved with this. Second, this has so many incredible elements to it and they work really cohesively into this heartwarming story of cryptid kids overcoming some wild challenges to figure out their place in a weird and not super welcoming world and to understand that family is what you make it. I really enjoyed it and hope to see more from this creative duo in the future!

I had a lot of fun with this, think a blend of X-Men/ Government cover up only with cryptids and creatures from folk lore. This young adult graphic novel features a group of kids Omar, half Yeti; Newt, a reptilian, the mute Clarice, a Selkie, Jaali, a were-bear, Sylvie, a will-of-the-wisp and Maggie, (Poseidon's kid?). I liked them all but I really wish they had made Newt a Grey not a reptilian. There are strong antisemitism underpinnings for them (though you wouldn't know that if you only looked at the wiki and some of the other sights) Even I didn't know that until I saw other reviews and went looking. MY original reason (before I had two) for not wanting a reptilian was there have been multiple murders (including child murders) hooked into that bit of conspiracy theory so it felt uncomfortable seeing it in a kids' book.

The kids are relatively happy living in the desert in a secret government compound until someone they trust has plans to turn them over to the villain of the piece. The kids get away and go on an Odyssey to find a place where they can live freely without fear.

Along the way they find other cryptos, get wrapped up in all kinds of craziness and are forced to confront their natures. Sylvie and Omar get most of the screen time being the eldest (16 at least since Omar can drive) but we get all their histories. Claire, being mute, is the least well drawn of the group as we get very little backstory for her. I liked that Sylvie is a will-o-the-wisp. Now there's a faerie you don't see often.

I enjoyed this. The art is fantastic. I'd like to see further adventures (and I still wish Newt was a Grey)

Another Kind is probably my favorite graphic novel that I have read in a long time. There was nothing in this book that I didn’t like! The group of characters were diverse. They were all so adorable and fun! It was a joy to read and learn about each and every one of them. I don’t think I could pick a favorite because they’re all so different…and I love them too much! I loved the group of characters that came in near the end of the book, they were so funny! The concept of this book is so creative and well done too. Everything tied up perfectly at the end. I wasn’t confused and wasn’t left wondering about certain events that happened in the book and whatnot! Also…the art. Like, how the heck? IT’S STUNNING! I adore the authors, Cait May and Trevor Bream! They are both so incredibly talented. I loved how they both acknowledged how important it is to put queer themes into children’s, especially tween’s, books and media. Trevor Breams goal is to tell stories that appeal to all, especially the queer community, and I really admire them for saying that. Also I really want to be best friends with the authors because they both seem really cool, can we make that happen somehow??

Adorable graphic adventure novel about mutant kids banning together in friendship against an evil collector.

Except….there were two, non-plot related conversations about the reality of more than two genders and a character who suspects that he’s non-binary. Why add that to such a fun story!? Stop hyper-sexualizing children. If society accepted a broader range of ‘normal’ male/female behavior/traits, we wouldn’t need to ‘add’ genders. Quit making childhood harder.

Don’t get me wrong, I honor pronouns, I love all people, but random unrelated scenes in books like these feel forced and smack of agendas. Sometimes agendas can wreck a good ride.

Ah, forgot to review this! Probably because I didn't find it that interesting and didn't really care too much about the ending.

Cute feel-good graphic novel about a ragtag band of cryptids trying to find a place to belong in a hostile world; the plot and message was predictable, the art was simply okay, and there were some gaps in logic like having the kids travel all over the US in what felt like a few days but had to be like.... actual weeks.

It was fine. I didn't hate it. I just didn't love it.
