In the race for freedom, there is no room for matters of the heart.
Bodhi Kane is a professional race car driver with money, fame, and everyone screaming his name, and he wants none of it. Stepping into the shoes of his late brother to fulfill a familial obligation was never on his list of things to do. He puts everything on the line for one night when he returns to his hometown of Sancte Alto to race the street circuit to feel alive again. What he doesn’t expect is the dark-haired beauty with the spitfire attitude who wants nothing to do with him.
After her brother was wrongly convicted of a crime, and framed by the gang leader who now has his sights set on her, Keaton King is doing everything she can to support her family, including racing her brother's car in illegal street races whenever she can. She’s even made a name for herself: The Street King. Despite being the one everyone wants to beat; Keaton holds fast to her crown and isn't giving it up anytime soon. Even after Bodhi Kane shows up and wrecks all of her plans and her brother’s car.
While he’s looking for a joyride, she’s looking for a one-way ticket to simpler times. Will Bodhi get the girl? Will Keaton leave him in her dust? Or will they both fall prey to the twisted acts of the gang following her every move?

This novel begins the slow burn romance between two race car drivers. One professional, one a street racer. No spice in this book, but there is in the next one!
The chemistry between the characters is great! The switch from enemies to lovers is slow and very very well done. The author makes sure to let the characters alter their perceptions of one another with hard evidence, unlike some books in this genre. The change in opinion has nothing to do with attraction and is completely to do with the character of each person and I am so here for it.
This is the first enemies to lovers that I’ve read that wasn’t focused on excusing behavior due to attraction, but instead, understanding behavior due to character traits. Previously I wasn’t a big fan of enemies to lovers because of that fact, but this book has changed my mind completely.
Bodhi and Keaton are both incredibly likable and relatable. Bodhi is respectful, sweet, eager, and smitten. Keaton is cautious, intrigued, amused, and interested.
On top of the wonderful romance, we have the stress of two other dangerous men in Keatons life. The gang leader forcing her to pay him money every month, and her childhood best friend turned stalker cop. Both men are keeping Keaton isolated. Both are watching her every move…
I can’t wait to see what happens next!!
Avery James King has made me like a trope I previously wasn’t impressed with. The writing was well done and the danger lurking in the background of the story has me hooked. Highly recommended!
This book is full of tension because it's really slow burn one.
I really like Keaton and Bodhi. They were great together. Keaton is a girl who doesn't take shit from anyone. When she wants something, she does everything to do it. She is the grumpy one.
The end breaks my heart. I wasn't ready for an end like this so I need more.
Bodhi's father is full of crap and deserves some slaps in the face.
Since the first chapter I was into the story. It's a well written one.
I look forward to read the next one and to know more about this universe.
This was my first street racing book and first book by this author. I initially struggled with this book, due to personal problems--it should NOT reflect on the book or author. I put the book down until I felt like I could read it. Once I restarted it, I was hooked!! I love Bohdi and Keaton, both individually and as a potential couple. There were plenty of loose ends in this cliffhanger. Now, I need more!!! I can't wait to see what happens in the next book...
This was the first book I read by Avery and the first books about street racing/racing in general. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I don’t normally care for slower burn reads, but there was so much going on that kept me reading and wanting to know more that it didn’t bother me in the least. I am definitely excited for book two and more of their story.
loved! i like that it’s kind of black cat and golden retriever coded, i love their banter, our male love interest is sooo fun silly sweet funny, and our female love interest is soooo sassy badass real girl. i also like the whole kindred spirit thing they two of them have between each other.
The characters were made for each other. I wanted to yell “just kiss!” So many times the tension so high. Wish I could dive into the next two already. Will definitely be impatiently waiting for them to be released this spring. I’m a fan!
If you love slow burn romance then this book is for you. It is well written, the characters are relatable, and the story catches your interest quickly. I look forward to reading more of this series.
