When the crass, but outrageously successful, fashion designer Max Reed, who exploits violence in his ads by shooting them at actual murder scenes, is blown up in his penthouse office, police watch a CCTV video of the person who delivered the bomb to Reed’s office and peg the LA private investigator Scott Brody as the killer. The truth is Brody didn’t know he was delivering a bomb. The local LA mobster Sal Andrasi duped Brody into thinking he was delivering a bowling ball to Reed. In order to clear his name, with the help of his sometime partner, the impetuous Tess Hardwick, Brody must find the real killer, the mastermind who hired Andrasi to hire Brody as the delivery boy. Which turns out to be more difficult than it seems.
Hated for his less-than-charming personality and his willingness to push the envelope when it came to advertising his fashion creations, fashion icon Reed had no lack of enemies in the cutthroat world of haute couture, including many of his own employees. With so many suspects to choose from, Brody finds himself lost in a tangle of bickering, resentful enemies, any one of which could have killed Reed, including several who want Brody dead.

"Threads,” by Bryan Cassiday, is aptly named for the fashion empire within, the pulling of a thread that unravels the whole thing, and the breadcrumbs that slowly weave together the full picture. Scott Brody may at first appear to be your typical private investigator, looking into spousal affairs and other low-level jobs, albeit for mobsters, but “Threads” pulls that entire life apart.
Book four in the Scott Brody thrill ride lives up to its reputation. As with the three books proceeding it, Scott Brody’s life seems to be anything but ordinary, further proved by the antics encompassed within this most recent iteration. And yet, he continues to bring the action as he takes on what he believes to be a well-paid, simple, delivery job. What could go wrong? Never lacking in action, this thrilling ride through Los Angeles and Las Vegas is explosive, literally. With ties to fashion and mobsters, nothing is off limits when it comes to packing a punch.
There are many characters present within “Threads,” from the fashion industry executives to other private investigators, police work, pornography producers, actors and aficionados, and mob ties. Though there is a plethora of characters to hold the reader’s attention, each character brings such a unique background and history into the fold that they all felt like exciting additions to the plot rather than burdensome names to keep track of, as large casts can sometime become.
Although the plot at times felt rushed, with all too convenient of leads, author Bryan Cassiday has a way with characters. The banter and relationship between Scott Brody and Tess Hardwick is entirely entertaining, and our fashion victim, Max Reed’s personality, is larger than life, even post-mortem. Beyond Cassiday’s talents with characters, the breadcrumbs within the plot seemed to cart readers in many different directions, keeping us not only entertained and guessing but showing off the author’s knowledge of several industries and their Hollywood/fashion ties. Despite these wild antics, Cassiday’s prose made Scott Brody’s adventures seem entirely realistic.
Book four of the Scott Brody thrillers, “Threads,” is entertaining, captivating, and full of action. Readers will quickly jump to all the wrong conclusions on their way to solving Scott Brody’s framing. With a cinematic ending, private investigating winding through the middle, and Hollywood fashion glory to kick it off, “Threads” makes for the complete package.
A interesting idea, but the author was unable to execute it well.
My issues with the book started right from the beginning. I didn’t care for the main character, Scott Brody, and it wasn’t long before I started detesting him. I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters. There was not a redeeming quality in any of them.
The plot was brilliant and there were some good twists and turns throughout, but it suffered from the lack of good writing. I felt as if I was reading the first book of the author and then found out he has written several other books. More details, more character building, and a likable protagonist would go a long way in making this book so much better.
My review is voluntary and all comments and opinions expressed are my own.
Threads by Bryan Cassiday is a nail biting thriller from the beginning. When fashion designer and icon in the fashion world is blown up in his penthouse. When the police see a video LA Private Investigator Scott Brody becomes the top suspect. Brody insists he is being set up by a member of the mob and is determined to prove his innocence with help of his partner Tess. There’s lots of surprises, danger, and drama. I thought the author did a good job in creating and crafting the characters who fit perfectly with the storyline. I received an ebook copy of this novel from the author through Goodreads and these opinions are strictly my own. I rated it a four.
A really quick and easy read - absolutely, yes. Likable characters? Not so much. When you make the millionaire fashion designer a caricature of excess, the gangster a man of few words and mysterious, and your main protagonist an aloof and self-centered kind of man who does everything by the seat of his pants, putting thought into nothing, you are bound to have readers not love the characters.
That’s my main issue with this book - the story itself is not bad, and it read quickly and unfolded well, but there was nary a character I liked, or was well fleshed out, which means I could not connect with them. But if you’re looking for a quick read, then this isn’t a bad pick.
The plot to this book was interesting and kept you guessing. The writing style was different than I am used to and was a bit hard to follow at times. I did find the dialogue between the characters rather odd at times, and actions that just didn’t make sense. Overall a decent read.
For being a book I won a free copy of, I wasn’t sure about it. However I was surprised. I really enjoyed the story line. It keep me wondering and guessing through the whole story. I will be reading other books by this author.
A very suspenseful book that will keep you guessing until the end. Full of shocking actions, colorful characters and the seedy side of fashion. A good, fast read!
This book definitely kept the suspense going. I enjoyed the twists and turns. Totally worth the read. It will keep you interested and you won't be able to put it down.
