Five-year-old Cally waits in her pretty pink bedroom for the sound of the front door opening and her mother’s sweet voice in the hall. But when the doorbell finally rings, and Cally creeps out of bed to peer through the banister, a large man in uniform is all she sees. Her mother is missing...
Teacher Annabel Braddock was last seen drinking at the local pub with her best friend, Jennifer. Witnesses saw tears running down her cheeks, and friends say she was having problems with a colleague at work, and that her marriage had broken down.
But as the two women hugged goodbye, neither noticed the car speeding towards them. As the dust settled, Jennifer lay unconscious on the ground and Annabel was nowhere to be seen. She’d never abandon her little girl, so did someone snatch her?
As family crowd around Jennifer’s hospital bed, hoping she’ll wake up, police visit Annabel’s home and her inconsolable daughter, Cally, tells them she had seen a man outside staring into her room as she climbed into bed that evening. Was it her childish imagination, or had someone been watching Annabel’s home?
When Jennifer finally opens her eyes and tells the police what happened that night, it’s clear there are plenty of people with a reason to harm Annabel. With an unpredictable husband, a colleague who denies harassing her and a neighbour who seems to know her every move, could she be in imminent danger? As the hours turn to days, will little Cally ever see her precious mother again? Or will she be next?

Book 11 and the DI Gina Harte series is still going strong. This was a very tense story. The drama started at the very beginning and didn’t let up until the very end. Teacher Annabel Braddock is having a night out with her friend CSI Jennifer Bailey. Witnesses say Annabel looked upset and was crying. As the women leave the pub a car speeds towards them, Jennifer is knocked unconscious and seriously injured and Annabel is abducted.
Jennifer’s boyfriend is DS Jacob Driscoll on Gina team and he is gutted. The hospital cannot tell him if Jennifer will make it. Meanwhile Annabel’s daughter, 5 year old Cally, is yet to learn of her mother’s fate.
There are many suspects for this crime. Annabel’s husband, Grant, who has been having an affair with young Taylor Caldwell, who often babysat Cally (that old cliché). The couple had been heard arguing a lot lately and Annabel thought her marriage was over. Grant had thought Annabel was having an affair but that was him jumping to a wrong conclusion. Taylor herself is a suspect as she expected Grant to leave Annabel and marry her but was dragging his heels.
There is also a creepy teacher at the school who has had a complaint against him. He is a real piece of work as the police learn but is he the kidnapper? There are others in the frame too. It doesn’t help that police cannot seem to find the vehicle that struck Jennifer. And Cally reports that she has seen a man outside her window. Is someone stalking Annabel?
On the personal side, Gina’s secret relationship with DCI Chris Briggs seems to be over as she sees him with another woman. What is going on there? The pace never let up as there were further very serious crimes committed. Annabel is tied up somewhere but will she be found in time?
This was another excellent instalment in the series. The characters, by now, are like old friends and the plotting was crisp as always. I really enjoyed this book. Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.
ONE GIRL MISSING is the eleventh crime thriller novel in the Detective Gina Harte Series, by author Carla Kovach. Having enjoyed the previous novels in the series, I move on to book 11. The story is set in Worcestershire England.
Even though this novel worked well as a stand-alone, I would recommend other readers to read the previous books as they will be given background information on the characters in this book. A solid police procedural with engaging characters.
Teacher Annabel Braddock and her best friend CSI Jennifer Bailey were out at a local pub. Annabel had been having marital problems, and her husband, Grant was angry all the time and they didn’t talk. He was never home and had had many affairs. Jennifer had made Annabel see what she needed to do, as she had to think of her five-year-old daughter, Cally first. Annabel told him she wanted a divorce.
After the two women left the pub, neither of them noticed a car speeding towards them. What followed was that Jennifer lay unconscious on the ground while her friend was abducted by the driver.
Detective Gina Harte and her team soon realize there are plenty of people with a reason to harm Annabel. Jennifer’s boyfriend is DS Jacob Driscoll on Gina team, and he is beside himself with worry.
This last novel in the series provides non-stop action and an enjoyable read.
Many thanks to the author, Bookouture and Netgalley for my digital copy.
I’m sorry to say that I’m done with this series. I enjoyed the taut plotting, clever twists and effective tension of the earlier books, but you can have too much of a “good” thing and I’m tired of the recycled plots, relentless misogyny and tedious protagonist angst. This is book eleven of the DI Gina Harte books, and I read the first nine in order, skipped the tenth because I was SO bored with the dead abusive ex-husband plot line, but thought that with that issue resolved, things would improve. I actually think this one would work better if you haven’t read any or many of the previous instalments - you get all the backstory you need, and think that you’ll enjoy it more if you haven’t read too much of this stuff - or if you loved the previous books and want more of the same. I’m just getting fed up with formulaic yet unbelievable police procedurals, no matter how well written they are.
A secondary school maths teacher has been abducted after a night out with her best friend who was left for dead. While her marriage was in trouble, she had other admirers stalking her - which one of them has taken her and will DI Harte’s team find her in time? Meanwhile Gina’s secret lover looks like he’s moving on…
First the good - as ever this was a well-paced suspenseful thriller with a decent range of characters, likeable and unlikeable, on both the police and suspect sides. The main story is mostly told from Gina’s third person past perspective, but there are also chapters featuring Annabel the kidnappee’s and Omar the lovelorn teenager’s first person present POV. The plight of poor 5 year old Cally, left wondering where her mother is, was suitably heart-rending. I’ve enjoyed the development of Gina’s team over the years, and the way the crime impacted one of their own was well done.
I’ve complained about this before with this and other series: it’s just not realistic that one detective in a small town could face so many sexual predators/abductors of women over a short period of time (especially when she doesn’t ever learn from her mistakes!) I also found it hard to believe that one woman could inspire obsession in so many different males. The identity of the perpetrator was easy to guess, despite plenty of red herrings, and I was disappointed not to be given any real explanation for his crimes. Gina doesn’t really solve the crime, and comes across as immature and scatty, and I was disappointed by her ending - I no desire to read more about her wallowing in self-pity and misplaced guilt. The title also annoys me - Annabel’s age is not stated, but she appears to at least be in her mid to late thirties - hardly a girl!
I am being harsh, but I’m comparing this to the earlier books in this series and feel like the author has run out of ideas, and it’s perhaps time to move on to a new character - I’d certainly be keen to read more of her work if it wasn’t always about violence against women and Really Horrible Men. My GoodReads friends have given this four and five stars, so I’d suggest reading a range of reviews to decide whether you might like it. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC. I am posting this honest review voluntarily. One Girl Missing is published on March 9th.
This is the 11th book in the Detective Gina Harte series by author Carla Kovach.
I have only read a couple of the books in this series but each one has gripped me and I do intend to read the others. Interesting characters, intriguing plots and well written stories make this series a good read.
Two friends are on a night out, teacher Annabel Braddock and CSI Jennifer Bailey, witnesses state that Annabel was upset. On leaving the pub the women make their way home when a car drives towards them. Jennifer is hit by the vehicle and lies unconscious in the road while her friend Annabel is abducted by the driver.
This is an all action novel and proved to be an exciting read.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This is book 11 of the series and even though I had not read any of the previous titles, I had no trouble with the story so it’s fair to say that it can be read as a stand-alone. I think you would get more of the backstory of the main characters in reading the others, and I plan to do that in the future as I did enjoy this. A hit and run on a girls night out leaves Jennifer on life support and her best friend missing. It’s a race against the cloak to figure out why one of them was taken and not both and in looking into the case, DI Gina Harte is that there was more than one person with a reason to want Annabelle. Can DI Harte figure out who was behind the crash in time to find her while she’s still alive? This was a well crafted story. Was it predictable at times? Yes. But I still found myself engaged and wanting to read more. If you like fast paced, you’ll like this one. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for this arc in excha
So, my reviews for these books are probably getting predictable and repetitive now. I've read every single one as soon as its available to me. And I just love every single one. So it will get the usual undeniable 5 stars, undeniable praise and undeniable excitement and apprehension for the next one. So without further ado here is my repetitive review....
DI Gina Harte is one of my all time favourite characters from books that I read. She is tough, but throughout the books we have seen her soften slightly especially towards the members of her team.
When one of their own is hurt and her friend is missing the team rush to find who caused this amount of distress and pain. But as they start getting stuck in they find out it isn't just a simple case of who dunnit!
Watching the branches of this massive tree unwind into an absolutely blowout ending was thrilling and edge of your seat. Your stuck somewhere in the middle, trying to figure out the way to safety but without a clue on where to step next.
I just love love love this series and will continue to follow it. I just hope that we never ever lose Gina, she never takes retirement and my god if she died I think I would cause a protest. I will look forward to dropping EVERYTHING all over again for the next installment.
One Girl Missing is yet another twisted compelling masterpiece from Carla Kovach. You think you know where the story is headed and have it all figured out but you'd have to think again. Every chapter in thus book was so compelling it kept me reading this book late into the night. I was hoping that a few if Gina's personal issues are resolved but things got a bit more complicated for her by the end of the book. The plot was thick with suspense in this whodunnit and being the seasoned reader of this genre I thought I knew who the kidnapper was. Wrong! The book was fast paced & plot very interesting. I can't wait for the next book in the Gina Harte series!
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture & Carla Kovach for this arc!
With Jennifer having been in an accident and currently on life support, with the friend she was with missing, Detective Gina Harte is in a race against time as she is determined to discover what happened. Why was Jennifer hit and left for dead, and her friend Annabel taken?
Gina and her team start their investigation by planning to talk to Annabel's husband. However, he is nowhere to be found and this fact definitely causes concern. Then, considering the fact that Jennifer is a CSI that Kate has worked with before takes this investigation on a different level of intensity. Jennifer's boyfriend is DS Jacob Driscoll and this makes the investigation all that more personal.
This exciting book takes a turn as the police look deeper into Annabel's life, or at least the life of her husband. Apparently, he was cheating on her with the babysitter of their young daughter Cathy. Could his actions have anything to do with what is going on? In fact, this part of the story definitely played like a soap opera as what was going on behind closed doors begins to be unraveled. This all points to more than one suspect.
As invested as Gina with this case, her personal life has turned upside down. Her energy is draining but she is determined to discover what has happened between her and DCI Chris Briggs. Spliting her time looking for answers while struggling to figure out what happened to her relationship has got her in knots. However, professional to the bone, Gina never lets up with striving to solve the mystery before her, all while trying to compartmentalize her personal dilemma.
With excellent characters, fabulous writing and an engaging story, One Girl Missing proved a wonderful addition to a compelling series.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Yet another gripping installment in the excellent DI Gina Harte series from one of my favourite authors.
I have to say I was saving this one for the weekend as I have a busy schedule this week but I snuck a look at the prologue and I was hooked right away. I just had to carry on reading, putting my chores and own work on hold for the rest of the day.
Oh my, this investigation is close to home for Gina and her team. Annabelle and Jennifer are on a night out when a car barrels towards them. Jennifer is found by the side of the road and is rushed to the hospital but Annabelle has gone missing. Why? Who took her?
Determined to find Jennifer who is the girlfriend of a member of her own team Gina leaves no stone unturned.
There are twists and turns aplenty in this one, especially when Annabelle’s daughter Callie also goes missing.
I’m not generally a fan of procedural crime, but Carla Kovach delivered so much more, and I was invested from the first page. This was a well told tale of the unraveling of Annabel’s public life, as Detective Gina Harte works around the clock to figure out how she disappeared while out for drinks with her friend, Jennifer.
I really enjoyed all of the characters in this book, as they each added flavor and their own angle, bringing Annabel’s life into clearer focus despite her absence for a large part of the story.
The layering and execution of the twists were done in a way that delivered just enough information to keep you guessing. Looking forward to reading more from Carla Kovach.

This is the fifth book I have read by this author. It is also the eleventh book in the 'Detective Gina Harte' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Their Silent Graves' which is the seventh book in the 'Detective Gina Harte' series, 'The Broken Ones' which is the eighth book, 'One Left Behind' which is the ninth in the 'Detective Gina Harte' series and 'Her Dying Wish' which is the tenth book in the 'Detective Gina Harte' series and I would recommend them all.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'If you love fast-paced, gripping crime thrillers that keep you up all night, you’ll be completely addicted to One Girl Missing. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Cara Hunter and Clare Mackintosh' I am a huge fan of Angela Marsons so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Carla Kovach and if this is half as good as 'The Broken Ones', 'One Left Behind', Their Silent Graves' and 'Her Dying Wish' it is sure to be an epic read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue, 68 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in England 🏴 , UK 🇬🇧 . I always enjoy when books are set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book. This makes it easier to picture where the scenes are set at times. I have in fact visited England on many occasions including going there on holiday last and this year so am looking forward to possibly recognising name places.
This book is written in a mix of third and first person perspective and the protagonists are Annabel Braddock, Detective Gina Harte, Omar Abidar and Jacob. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything. To have the benefit of both first and third person perspective ensures you don't miss out on anything.
'One Girl Missing' discusses some topics that may trigger some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Carla discusses/includes stalking, secual assault l, domestic abuse and rape.
WELL, WELL, WELL CARLA DOES IT AGAIN!!!! YET ANOTHER EXPLOSIVE PAGE TURNER BY AN EXTREMELY TALENTED AUTHOR!!
This book is yet another riveting installment in this gripping and addictive series. Filled with vivid descriptions it is easy to get lost in the pages for hours. The cover and synopsis work perfectly with the storyline. This book hit every possible emotion and I loved every part of it.
The storyline was unique, very fast paced, realistic and filled with suspense, tension, secrets, action and lots red herrings to throw you off the scent. I was completely invested in the storyline and completely shocked by who the killer turned out to be and never expected them in the slightest!!! I always love it when I'm shocked as there's nothing worse than working out the killer and your not even half way through the book yet. The plot has so many layers and so many twists, turns and mini plots there is always something to keep you on the edge of your seat!!! I love that several chapters are from the perspective of several different people including a victim which gives an excellent insight to how they are feeling and what they are going through. This book discusses domestic abuse, stalking and rape and I am a huge believer that all of these should be discussed more often to help victims of either realise there is help available out there and they are not alone. As always Carla has done an immense amount of research and it shines throughout the book. It also highlights what a parent would do for their child. An extremely well written and thought provoking action packed crime thriller. The descriptions were so vivid I could feel the freezing cold water in some pages and the hair raising on my arms. It is filled with loss, crime, suspense, tension and is a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The ending had me choked up as did several events in the book so I would have the tissues at the ready!! As always this book has left me wanting more in the Gina Harte series!!
CLEAR YOUR SCHEDULES BEFORE STARTING THIS AS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN!!!
Although this is the eleventh book in the series I had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I love Gina and the fact that she is a strong female role model who has got a history herself makes it even better. I enjoyed meeting all the previous characters along with many new ones who all had their own personalities and were STRONG characters, well maybe not all!! A certain character, a few actually I could not stand but I'm extremely pleased that particular characters got their comeuppance, I won't say more than that as I don't want to spoil it for others but once you've read it I'm sure you'll know who I mean. I love the dynamics in Gina's team and the fact they all work so well together. Each of her team has their own unique traits and personalities and I love meeting them in each new storyline that Carla brings out. My heart particularly went out to Jacob and Gina in this book, I won't say anymore than that as not to spoilt it for future readers. It also broke for Omar and his mum, you will see why when you have read this amazing book!! I am looking forward to meeting them all again when I read more of the fabulous Carla's books.
If you have never read this series I highly recommend starting now. It is always great if you can start at the beginning of a series but the brilliant thing with Carla's books is that it really doesn't matter where you start as they can be read in any order.
THIS IS A MUST READ, ACTION PACKED, UNPUTDOWNABLE PAGE TURNER THAT WOULD MAKE A BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE/TV SERIES. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT HAPPEN!!
CONGRATULATIONS CARLA ON YET ANOTHER EXPLOSIVE INSTALLMENT IN AN EPIC SERIES!!! This is exactly why you are in my top 3 crime authors and series list!!
Overall a page turning, psychological thriller that will leave you shocked and wanting to read more of this incredible series
Genres covered in this novel include Psychological Fiction, Crime Fiction, Thriller, Police Procedural, Mystery and Psychological Thriller amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Angela Marsons, Carol Wyer, C. L Taylor, Tess Gerritsen and anyone looking for an addictive and explosive series.
359 pages.
This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 5 /5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.
Feel free to add me on Goodreads or follow me on my website or Facebook for more reviews
One Girl Missing by Carla Kovach is the 11th in the Detective Gina Harte series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Series Background: (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books) DI Gina Harte works homicides. Her team consists of: DS Jacob Driscoll, DC Harry O’Connor and DC Paula Wyre, with a lot of assistance from PC Smith and PC Kapoor. Gina is a stubborn lady, and a determined detective. She has had a rough life, which has led to an uneasy relationship with her daughter and grand-daughter. It has also led to a lack of real friends, and an on-again/off-again relationship with her boss, DCI Chris Briggs. It is not common knowledge that her husband was abusive, and only Briggs knows that she did not save him when he fell to his death many years ago.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) DS Jacob Driscoll's girlfriend Jennifer Bailey, a crime scene technician, is found unconscious on the road, an obvious hit and run scenario. They aren't sure she will make it. She and her best friend Annabel Braddock were out drinking at a local pub. Annabel is missing, and it looks like whoever hit Jennifer, took Annabel.
Annabel and her husband Grant have been having some issues, but there is no way she would willingly leave her 5-year old little girl behind. Cally thinks there is a ghost in the yard, but maybe she saw someone spying on them?
Annabel's abusive husband Grant isn't the only suspicious character in her life. There is also his young girlfriend, and Annabel's colleague at work, and a student who has a very big crush on her. Or perhaps it is someone hiding in plain site. Gina has her work cut out for her.
Meanwhile, Gina saw Chris with another woman, and it seems that her personal life is taking another hit.
My Opinions: What is with the covers to these books...they have nothing to do with the contents? As well, I was really glad to see that Gina's dead husband had no role in this one!
The story is told by different people, and the author provides clues to the perpetrator slowly, through these voices. That was done very well.
I really liked the characters, as they continued to gain depth as the story went on.
The plot was really good, and dealt with abusive relationships, schoolboy crushes, stalking and obsession. The pace and action were good, and nothing dragged.
Overall, this was one of the better ones in the series!

What a great instalment in the Gina Harte series, i just love Gina and following her story i'm know waiting for her and Briggs to get together, if you haven't read books 1 to 10 then do before hand because they are epic!
In this instalment Jenny and her friend Annabel are out at the pub, Anabel is upset about her colluege, so when they are hugging goodbye neither of them notice a car speeding which runs them over. When Jenny wakes up she realises Anabel has been kidnapped, so where is she? With so many suspects Gina and her team are determined to get their man with Jenny being part of the CSI team this is personal.
I loved this book, i must admit when Gina still has her own personal storyline especially with her dead ex husband she can't help but feel guilty even though she didn't actually kill him. Yet her guilt is ever present, this isn't helped by Riggs acting shady being able to throw herself into a case is just what she needs. Jenny is the partner of one of her team members so it's interesting that very little of the story is from his POV, but when it is you know it is going to be important, That is one thing i love about Gina and the way she writes you honestly don't know what the side characters role is going to be they could even be the kidnapper but as per you have to wait and see.
I really enjoyed the boys POV, he was pretty obsessed with his teacher to the point of stalking. He seems like the obvious choice and waiting to find out if he is the culprit or not. But it was a great to have a younger voice in the story, It's not often that you get that POV without them being kidnapped even if he was a bit strange.
I found that Gina was a bit more subdued with her character in this series, not being her usual self. She's worried about Briggs and worried about her partner after the information his ex wife told her. During a very sensitive and difficult case she has no one to turn to. I found it interesting how different she is in this story. No sleep, no friends and a bad relationship with her daughter. It's almost sad to see her like this.
i love this series and this instalment was up there with all the others. i found myself hooked to it and i sped through the entire book in a day. The writing style was as usual amazing with great description and left me just wanting to read the next book. I was flipping between suspects throughout and i didn't guess until the end. amazing An easy 5 stars.
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture and Carla Kovach for the ARC of one girl missing in exchange for my far and honest opinion.
Best friends Annabel and Jennifer are hugging each other goodbye at the end of a girls night out when a car speeds towards them. Jennifer is left unconscious on the ground and Annabel is nowhere to be seen, only her bag and spots of her blood left behind. Detective Gina Harte and her team are called in and as they investigate it soon becomes clear that there are multiple people who might want to harm Annabel. But can they figure it out and find Annabel before it’s too late?
The eleventh instalment in Carla Kovach’s Gina Harte series is another compelling thriller. There are numerous suspects in this case, each with a valid motive, and they are all on the run: a cheating husband, his young girlfriend who was also the family childminder, an angry father, a teenage pupil with a crush, a colleague she was rumoured to be seeing and a friendly neighbour. But who took Annabel? I was sure it was each of them at one point or another and even wondered if some of them were working together. It is a tangled web of suspicion that is full of so many twists and turns I thought I’d get book whiplash! But was my final choice the real culprit? Or had Ms. Kovach duped me again with her red herrings?
One of the things I love most about reading a series is coming back to the familiar, much-loved characters and I was glad to be back with Gina and her team. Gina is dealing with emotional turmoil after seeing Briggs out with another woman. Is this the end of her relationship? And the whole team face heartache as they wait to learn if one of their own will survive, Jacob being particularly tortured as he hopes the love of his life pulls through.
The new characters were well written as always. I felt a real bond with Annabel and could feel her terror as she’s held captive and wonders if she will ever see her young daughter, Cally, again. And it was Cally, along with teenage student Omar, who went right to my heart in this book. They were such great characters who it was impossible not to feel for. I was rooting for them, especially as young Omar takes it upon himself to save Annabel himself in order to keep her secrets.
Dark, suspenseful, gripping and action-packed, One Girl Missing is another riveting thriller from Ms. Kovach. Fans of this genre will love not only this book, but the whole series and I recommend them both highly.
Another great book in the Gina Harte series, I can't believe we are up to No. 11, this is a series I really enjoy. This is another author whose characters are so great to catch up with again. My heart is breaking as it seems that Gina and Briggs relationship, of which they have kept hidden, may be in trouble, I really like these two together and feel they are meant to be, but am I right?
Lots of action and again a fast paced book that once again keeps you turning the pages at a rapid speed. I really enjoy the depth of these stories, well developed characters and plot that cover serious crimes portrayed in a very real way. I highly recommend this series and thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advance copy of the book, all opinions are my own.
While I have not read all of the Gina Harte series, I have read most (but three) and this installment reminds me why I love this series so much. It is engaging, addictive and fast paced throughout making it is good solid crime thriller for fans to sink their teeth into. Needless to say, I eagerly await each installment of this series to see what Gina is faced with next. This time round was a real pickler of a case...but it was intriguing and I couldn't turn the pages quick enough to see if I had worked out the culprit. Carla hoodwinked me last time round but not this time.
Teacher at local school Cleevesford High, Annabel Braddock, is enjoying drinks with her best friend Jennifer at the Angel Arms. But tonight is tinged with marital discord as Annabel has discovered her husband Grant has been having it away with their babysitter and when she confronted him he became aggressive and violent. She confides in Jennifer that she knows her marriage is over but she must stay for Cally, their five year old daughter. Then tragedy strikes on their walk home along the lane leaving one of them critically injured and no sign of her friend.
DI Gina Harte is just readying herself to go home when she is alerted to the fact that one of their CSIs, Jennifer Bailey who is also living with DS Jacob Driscoll, has been the victim of a hit and run. Confirming that Jennifer had been out with her best friend Annabel, he then rushes to the hospital to be with her while Gina races to the scene. But clues are few and far between as the team fight to get to the bottom of this nasty incident which is looking less like an accident.
Annabel is a mother. So where is her daughter? When Gina and her team knock on her door she discovers worried neighbour Evan who had been babysitting Cally but knew Annabel should have been home long ago. Queries about the whereabouts of her husband are vague - something about him sleeping with the childminder and the couple on the brink of separation - but no clues as to his whereabouts. A sleepy-eyed Cally wakes with stories of a ghost in their backyard which Evan puts down to them watching Casper reruns before bed.
Further enquiries lead Gina to the school at which Annabel teaches which thus uncovers several more leads to follow up on - a creepy teacher (a real piece of work, he is) who works with Annabel and has already had a complaint lodged against him and a love-lorn teenage boy. Added to this, when the team finally track down Taylor, the young woman Grant had been an affair with, she throws her two cents worth in informing them that Grant had promised he would leave Annabel and marry her...but it appears he was dragging his heels. It seems their suspect pool is growing.
But the question remains...who ran down Jennifer and abducted Annabel. And why? Can Gina and her team get justice for Jennifer and her friend?
This series just grows from strength to strength as Gina seems to have finally moved on from her past (which is rehashed in several books) and at last has found some stability and peace with her life. But just when all seemed to be settling down with Briggs last time round, now it appears he has moved on leaving Gina wondering where they really stand with each other. That turn of events kind of shocked me, particularly where they were in the last book.
The eleventh book in this brilliant series, ONE GIRL MISSING is multi-layered and fast paced throughout and has no trouble keeping readers engaged from beginning to end. It is addictive and, while I correctly guessed the culprit, many will not as there truly is a pool of suspects to choose from.
I have to say ONE GIRL MISSING is probably my favourite in the series so far. I know I said that about the last one...but this one was just so good. It was completely solid and unputdownable despite the complex storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed it! My only complaint is the on/off relationship with her superior. Either go for it or get over it. Because I'm over rehashing it.
I can't wait to see what's in store next for Gina. I definitely recommend this book in conjunction with the previous nine books first and it is perfect for fans for good solid crime thrillers.
I would like to thank #CarlaKovach, #Netgalley, #Bookouture for an ARC of #OneGirlMissing in exchange for an honest review.
One Girl Missing by Carla Kovach is the eleventh book in the Gina Harte series. I picked up this series with The Liar's House (book 4) and I also thoroughly enjoyed books five through to ten.
The author has written a really clever and fascinating story with a layered plot that drew me in right from the very first page. Set in the fictional Midlands town of Cleevesford, in this eleventh tense tale, the stakes are high and Gina needs her team more than ever, though she is very focused on her job. Annabel Braddock has disappeared, presumed abducted after a night out with her best friend, Jennifer. Annabel and her BFF were walking home from the Angel Arms pub when they are hit by a car; Jennifer was left seriously injured and Annabel is nowhere to be seen.
Feisty and down-to-earth, Gina is a brilliant Detective Inspector. DCI Chris Briggs makes an interesting contribution and DS Jacob Driscoll is Jennifer's boyfriend. The great pacing by Carla Kovach also had a hand in my huge enjoyment of the story. I suspected many of the characters though I remained bamboozled to the end. If you love a good detective series and psychological thriller with plenty of twists and a very dark feel, then One Girl Missing is for you. Very highly recommended. 😊
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Another brilliant crime thriller from Carla Kovach. Annabel and Jennifer are walking home from a night out when something terrible happens. Jennifer is hit by the car and when Annabel tries to help she gets hurt and then dragged away by someone. With Jennifer’s life hanging by a thread the hunt is on to find Annabel. Gina and the team try and track down her husband but he’s no where to be found at first and it seems all was not good between the couple. There’s lots of suspicious characters that could be the kidnapper and I really enjoyed trying to work out who it was. I got it completely wrong though as this is a very cleverly written story. I love this series and look forward to what comes next for Gina. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
What a moving crime thriller this proved to be, With a hit and run, a disappearing Mum and mystery. A five year old witness, can she be sure Of exactly what it was that she saw?
The life of a colleague and friend, hangs by a thread, The driver left her behind, possibly thinking her dead. But what happened to the teacher who was by her side? Has she been taken or gone somewhere to hide?
Whilst the investigation uncovers surprises galore, Can the team solve what happened and more? With betrayal, adultery, a stalker and other things strange, Can Annabel's return home to her daughter they arrange?
A moving family drama and crime thriller, too, This story has you wondering just who Is the perpetrator and what is their motive as well? Only by uncovering the truth will they be able to tell.
There's personal drama, too, for members of the team, With love shining through for one and for others it is only a dream. The epilogue is moving and I really have to say Please help Gina also find lasting true love one day!
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you, It is a brilliant read and this is my honest review.
This is my first dip into this UK Midlands crime series, perhaps not the smartest move jumping in at this stage in the series. It does however read well as a standalone.
I wanted to try this authors work as she is relatively local to me, and i like recognising areas. I enjoyed the storyline. It keeps a decent pace throughout.
The character that I engaged with most is Omar, a love lorn teenage boy. It’s here if I’d read the rest of the series it might have endeared me to the main characters more.
I didn’t gel with the writing style, Also it’s too far on the cosy side of the spectrum for my preference, although I have been swayed by a cosier series when I’ve engaged well with the characters.
Funny, for all my complaining about being annoyed that DI Harte couldn't stop obsessing over her dead husband that finally we get a book where he is just a ghost and I am still annoyed. I think I am just annoyed with her. Perhaps that means I am done with this series. This book dealt with a missing woman and the many many people who might have taken her. Starting there: the person missing is not a girl. She is a teacher, wife, mother, and not a girl. Even one of the other characters remarks that she isn't a girl. So, let's quit demeaning the characters. Also, the many potential suspects were a bit overwhelming. While I do understand that at the beginning of a case the net is wide, but to have so many solid potential kidnappers up until the big reveal seemed a bit much. I am still not exactly sure why the perpetrator picked that time and method to pursue her. It felt somewhat random. This book felt like it didn't know where it was going most of the time and the chapters that left the main story to provide insight from Annabel and Omar felt like distractions more than adding to the story. I was never able to lose myself to the story.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of the book. This review is my own opinion.
Heart wrenching and chilling mystery. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and found myself caring about the side characters and their relationship. While I like Gina as a main character, I like the parts about her colleagues and their squad as well. I will be continuing with this series and am looking forward to seeing what comes next.
Teacher Annabel Braddock and crime scene tech, Jennifer Bailey are out for a night on the town. Annabel shares things with Jennifer about her marriage and decides that she is going to leave her husband Grant, as he is having an affair with their child minder/nanny. On the way home from the neighbourhood pub, Jennifer is hit and left die, while Annabel is taken. Jennifer ends up in ICU, put into a medically induced coma to allow her brain to stop swelling. Jennifer's partner is DS Jacob Driscoll, a member of Gina's team, which makes it even more personal. When Gina arrives at Annabel's house, her husband is not there and 5 year old Cally is being watched by their neighbour, Evan. As the story unfolds, suspects are added to the list. Did her husband snatch her, what about the child minder. The team also learns about a teacher who sexually harassed and possibly raped Annabel. There is also a student who has an unhealthy crush on her and has been watching her house. When her husband disappears and a person of interest is killed, there is a race to find Annabel and bring her home to Cally.
I started this series at book #7 and had no problem enjoying this series at that point. These stories can be read as standalones, but you will miss any character development and relationship building. This book was a very quick read for me as I wanted to know who had Annabel. The story is told by various POVs, but it was easy to follow and I enjoyed seeing what was happening through the eyes of various characters. My one issue is the "secret relationship between Gina and DC Briggs. It looks like it might be finished, which makes me happy. I felt Gina made a lot of bad decisions for a smart lady, so I am hoping she is moving on. As the investigation continued, I kept changing my mind about what was going on with the various red herrings that were shared. I was surprised at who the kidnapper was, but it was a fitting ending. There was one incident that make me very sad, but it also made the story more realistic, as everything doesn't end happily in life and crime. This series and book has interesting characters, intriguing plots and well written stories that make it an enjoyable and entertaining read. If you enjoy police procedurals, I recommend this book and series.
My Review: Loved and OMG!!!!! I live for the endings of a book and this one had it all. It was super intense and very shocking. I was on the edge of my seat the whole entire time. I couldn’t flip through the pages fast enough. I didn’t know what was going to happen next or who was going make it out. Also, be warned that tissues are needed for certain parts. I got so emotional at times and used a whole box of Kleenex. Ok, so I promised myself I would start this series from the very beginning since I have been reading them out of order but once I read this blurb I just couldn’t help myself. It sounded so good and I thought why not since I have already started it out of order anyways. This is a great series that can definitely be read any way you like it. I’ve read half of this series so far now and I can’t wait to read the rest of them. As usual the characters are my favorite part of these books. This whole team of detectives work so well together to solve the crime as quick as they can. Each of them add their own strengths to help the team out to get the job done. Also, after reading so many books in this series I have gotten so invested in each of these characters lives outside the job. It’s like I’m best friends with each and every one of them. I feel everything that they are feeling whether it’s good or bad. I laugh or cry with me depending on the scenario. These characters are what makes these books so special. I really hope this series never ends. As always Carla Kovach did a wonderful job and I can’t wait to start another book by her.
In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
