Partially sweet and subtly heartfluttering. Our couple, Xie Han and Shen Wen-jun, has been friends for years. They studied at the same school, and now worked similar jobs, with Xie Han being a police officer and Wenjun being a prosecutor. Xie Han had been bearing a crush on his best friend for years despite his gender as a beta, and finally planned to propose on Wenjun's 30th birthday. The whole plan was ruined when Wenjun's fated alpha came into the picture and the whole things told us brief and straightforward things happening after that.

The Flesh of a Swan could be said as a considerably short story; it only has 12 chapters and each chapter wasn't overly too long too. It wasn't too fluffy and there's a certain steadiness that comes naturally from the way Xie Han and Shen Wenjun's relationship proceeded in the beginning.

My most favorite thing about this couple is how incredibly mature they are, particularly Xie Han. He bore an unrequited love (or so he thought) for years and yet you get the feeling that he was very considerate of Shen Wenjun's feelings even until the end. He liked his best friend and he's always aware of his gender not being the best option Wenjun could go for, and now throwing fated alpha into there....everything became worse and he still placed Wenjun's interest as the most important thing.

I especially like the second half of this book because it showed more of Xie Han's cool-headed temperament. Contrary talking about feelings, with Wenjun, it's less noticeable but it's definitely there. We couldn't get a lot of details because the book is ultimately very very short, but I think I rated it higher because it didn't waste any moment to be fillers. It's very straightforwards, while still leaving subtle clues and hints for both characters' inner feelings for each other, and thanks to that I found it even more swoony to read.

I'd absolutely love to reread this and I'm so happy I was able to get a chance to reread it (yes this wasn't my first time reading this) now that the translation is back well and good!😆🥳

It was honestly nice to see an omega x beta couple, and one that had two mature leads at that. The ML was very respectful and mature, and I also appreciated MC’s work ethic and passion for his job. I’m so glad the story didn’t end with the MC getting together with his “fated alpha”. Usually, such characters are the ML, so having the MC couple up with the supposed “second lead” and childhood friend was cool to see 🥹.

Overall, this was pretty good for a short story. However, because this was a short story (only 12 chapters), I wasn’t as emotionally invested in these characters or the story.
The tone of the story is light, and there is no significant stakes involved. It was a good read, nonetheless.
(I like how the conflict with the ring box was addressed and dealt with effectively.)

Rating is low because only few people read the book so far.

Finally a good piece of writing about overcoming the "inevitable attraction of pheromones". It does not drag, there is no attempt to cram half of their lives into the last chapter and create a happy ending. Things are left open-ended, just as they are in life, everything takes some time and never proceeds straightforwardly. Therefore, it is good to leave things up to the imagination of the readers.
